FPV Drones & Kiteboarding - Breathe and Relax Michael Rollins 2021-04-07 | I have always wanted to fly kite boarders. We are in Charleston, SC for the week and had met up with some friends. I had brought the drone bag "just in case", and wow, this was the time to have it. The wind was fierce and I kept getting blackouts before I swapped goggles, but this was some of the most relaxing and exciting flying I've done in a long time.The two kite boarders are Eric Swanson (yellow kite) and Camilo Sandoval (purple kite). Serge from Pyrodrone told Evan Turner at the Worlds in Turkey that if he started his own company he would learn business. That one statement spurred the birth of Five33 a couple years later. At its birth, half of the top 10 pilots in racing at the MultiGP championship were flying Five33 Switchbacks, quite the guerrilla marketing feat. Today, if you want to know the frame to race with, well, it's the Five33 Switchback.Evan Turner was able to take his winnings and his name and turn it into an FPV company at the age of 18. Highlights include that they're planning for a drone to be dropped from *500ft* onto someone - for a 250g quad, that means 57mph by their calculations, which assume you're flying in a VACUUM. The 80 Joules of energy associated with this impact is something they indicate (with references) to have a 30% chance of lethality if it it were to impact someone's head. Given these assumptions, the weight limit doesn't seem arbitrary and almost generous, I'd say. But you could certainly argue with their assumptions.For example: their drop calculations concluding that a .55lb quad generates 80 Joules of energy was estimated assuming a vacuum - which DJI points out that if you just included a drag coefficient the weight to generate 80 J from 500ft would be ~450g. Also after we've gotten a few more hours under our belt collectively it would seem to indicate their calculations are a bit conservative when the estimate 1 ground fatality per 20,000,000 flight hours - which we seem to have exceeded many times over. But when your chances are 1/20,000,000 - you can really roll the dice a lot before you "win." We also seem to be creating amazing stuff with these limitations. Politics in the US, Europe and China got turned up to 11. Trade wars. Wildfires. Economic downturns. This was a hard year.But, for me, the challenges of this year highlighted that it was a really good year for myself and my family. After nearly a lifetime of getting to the end of a year and only feeling failure, I come to the end of this year feeling like I overcame the year. Life was not easy, but I'm still standing here at the end, and against all odds I have a smile on my face.Too many of you do not have a smile on your face, however. For some of you, 2020 was a radically hard year. But, that in no way makes 2020 a failure. In fact, you reading this right now is a fantastic victory.In a year when the world conspired against you, you are still standing. You won. 2020 did not beat you. I watched my children grow and seize hold of the world, defining themselves for the first time. My wife and I are closer, supporting each other while also giving each other the space that we need to exist in this pressure cooker of a year. My mental and physical health have been better and I've learned that we can survive with less.But this year has been hard on everyone, and I'm no different. 2020 has caught up to me in the last few weeks. The days have gotten too short, the sky overcast and rainy, and that has significantly impacted my mood. A close family member is in the ICU right now and it just doesn't look good. There have been so many changes in the last 2 months. And don't even get me started on the state of the US. I happen to love this country, and especially the people in it. It grieves me to see us all at each others throats.So tonight I sat down and pulled out the footage I haven't used, mainly because I didn't think it was good enough. I wanted to create, and this is what I had to work with. I chose the song by Bliss n Esso to start, then began fitting the elements of the video together.I've been doing some film work for a few friends over the past few months, so I decided to add the shots I'm most proud of. Those are the ones that aren't FPV. There is something about creating, and especially about creating with the things that you've made, that brings a peace to the soul. Despite all of the chaos, the sadness and grief, the pent up anxious energy, the forced closeness and the forced distance, I took a few small things and put them in their place.It's a small thing, but in this world where I have very little control, it's not an insignificant thing.I hope your year hasn't been awful, but I'm sure it has for quite a few of you. If that's the case, then I pray (yeah, I pray every once in a while, and sometimes I pray for you, which, I pray for the folks that matter to me... Even you, Seth) that it gets better. Big enough that it was very audible from the ground. You can see them swarming in the shot. Apparently loud, buzzy drones make them mad.The brown line in the ocean shot as I come out of the half-power-loop is a brown tide. There were quite a few fish kills that week.The dive on the pretty blue building was directly at dawn. I'd never seen those lights before and they looked fantastic in the final product. But that's also where the grain is from. About two minutes after that dive I put my drone in a pond at the bottom of the wall.The rain shot was a desperate attempt to get something cinematic for a wedding I was filming. The part that kills me the most is that it _would_ have been usable... but one raindrop hit the lens before the "reveal". Smh.
