Sonata Kay 2025-03-02 | At the point of writing it's been over 24 hours since ''Gold'' has been officially released, but it's still an orphan without a video.. technical difficulties :) feels like I've been editing for years at this point. The initial project got corrupted and despite many attempts - was irretrievable. Trust me, it's easier to make a video from a scratch than to recreate what you've already made! A bit counterintuitive, I know. Anywhooo, the video is finally live and I'm pretty much the opposite :)

Sonata Kay 2020-12-23 | I don't think anyone can do Joni Mitchell's River more justice than she already has, but the song is so stunning that I had to try and tame it, so my Casio keyboard and I got to work ツ I filmed this at 3am, because it was one of those now or never kind of situations, so it's far from perfect - I was tired and my voice was croaky, but it feels more real this way :)

I went to a planetarium last year over Christmas where they were showing a documentary about voyagers one and two. I was so inspired after hearing about the Golden Record that I had no choice, but to write a song about it

Sonata Kay 2019-12-08 | So I got an idea for this song while reading the Stand by Stephen King, a post-apocalyptic, horror/fantasy novel. Inspiration can pick weird places to show up, lol. Luckily - I'm not too picky ;) Although I got the idea months ago, it wasn't coming very easily to me. I'm still not sure if it's quite there yet, but here's a very raw and dark version. Golden Cage (one rushed take 😭) //original ♪

Sonata Kay 2019-10-27 | I filmed this back in August after my broken arm healed enough and well, let's just say it didn't go as planned... I've booked this awesome rehearsal space, because I really wanted the massive windows and the beautiful daylight they provided. Big mistake... this was essentially a space meant for dancers and there was a lady next door practicing pole dancing to a serious beat that my recorder was picking up full on... after almost an hour of trying to get a take in and with only 15min of my booking time left, I finally summoned the courage and asked the lady to take the music down for 10min. Which she did, but at that point another five dancers joined her and made aaaaa lot of noise.. so here's a very rushed stressed out take that I've manage to squeeze in. I wasn't going to post this, because it didn't seem good enough, but then there's a danger I will never post anything, so here's a little wonky take of 'Golden Cage'. There's a mistake in the lyrics towards the end, please ignore that lol.

Sonata Kay 2019-07-15 | So this was initially supposed to be a collab, but didn't quite work out that way. I've made my own arrangement, put this little production together and left it to rot on my hardrive :) but every dog has it's day as Stephen King would say and so I've managed to break my left arm and some ribs and am unable to play or record anything... which is not fun tbh, but I still wanted to put something out, so here's a little combo of some B-roll that I had from a recent trip and this forgotten track. I've milked every last drop from this footage haha.

Pretty much since November 2018, it was the last project I worked on before my hiatus :) Pet Cheetah is one of my absolute favourite songs from 'Trench' by #twentyonepilots
It resonated with me a lot and I really wanted to cover it, but was terrified of the rapping part, so use your gentle side please :)
I booked a studio for 8am to film this as they had a reduced rate for that time, so sorry about my uncombed hair.

Sonata Kay 2018-09-30 | Definitely one of the top ten songs I wish I had written :) This hits so close, because I've gone through some madly lonely hours living in this concrete jungle that I love very much, but it doesn't mean it's easy. I know this sounds bogus, but having this little channel helped me loads with that, because somehow, slowly a little community of amazing people has formed around it and I'm eternally grateful for it and every new comment, dm, email makes me feel less lonely and incredibly happy. Sorry if this is lame, but it's the truth and also being lonely isn't cool, but that can happen to the best of us, especially if you live in an expensive big city and have a goal that you devote all your time to in-between your working hours.

Sonata Kay 2018-09-16 | So I've watched Sierra Burgess is a Loser the other day and I thought that the song was beautiful and it would be fun to cover it. Hope you'll like it! ♥
Also, since I did like eight takes it got dark by the time I was done and the darkness & shadows gave the video this really cool, atmospheric feel. Sadly it was too dark to use as the main take, but I still wanted to share it with you guys - so stay till the end if you want to see it ;)

A little note about the movie. Just my very personal opinion. Since this film received a lot of criticism and negative reviews, here's my take on it. The world needs to take a chill pill... ツ
If you want something politically correct, careful and calculated - don't watch a rom com, of course it's going to be cringey and of course there will be silly moments and of course the characters are going to be flawed, because they're not meant to be perfect. Because it's a movie about teenagers - and it involves a lot of trial and error and choices and discoveries and mistakes. It's meant to be this perfect storm where everything collapses into one huge mess of situations and emotions, because that's what being a teenager is like. Rant over :) Hope you like my take on this beautiful song.

six feet under - live on a street piano in London || sonata kay

Sonata Kay 2018-09-09 | Somehow Billie Eilish's 'Six Feet Under' slipped under my radar, so I was super stoked to come across it a few weeks ago. There are loads of gorgeous & quirky street pianos all over London and I've been wanting to use it as a location for one of my live unplugged videos. I don't really play the piano, so please ignore the wonky finger placement & terrible posture. I've just learned it for this song :) Another thing to ignore is the crazy background noise from the plane flying overhead - sorry, unfortunately that's part of the package when you're doing live unplugged in the City of London ✈✈✈

a little rehearsal on a windowsill ☁ cant help falling in love

Sonata Kay 2018-08-26 | So a few weeks ago I took part in a beautiful wedding in a gorgeous chapel in South of France and was asked to perform this legendary piece (Can't Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley) during the ceremony. One evening, as I was rehearsing in my hotel room, I could hear a storm fast approaching, the sky was about to burst open and combined with the church bells it created a pretty sublime atmosphere, so I thought I might as well film my little rehearsal.

It turned out better than I expected actually & I'm glad I've managed to capture a bit of the magic from that evening.

Sonata Kay 2018-07-08 | So I got to film my latest song 'You Will Fade' in this beautiful church in Notting Hill, London thanks to my friend Paul. Also, I bought a Glockenspiel recently - one meant for kiddos & had soo much fun playing with it, so I've decided to try and incorporate it in post production along with some bv's & a shaker - let me know what you think about this experiment :)

my three tips for songwriting - video diary #3

Sonata Kay 2018-05-12 | So this time I'm sharing three rules for songwriting that I have set out for myself & it probably won't work for everyone, but I hope you can still find value in this.

If you don't feel like listening to me blab away for three minutes, to make it easier, I have put it all together here:

1. Don't force it - show up for it everyday, but don't force it;
2. When it does come to you - make the most of it & try to write the whole song in one sitting if possible: lyrics & all;
3. Don't get stuck on one song for too long: write it, finish it & move on to the next one. Otherwise there's a big danger you might end up writing one song a year...& that's not much of a progress.

BONUS TIP: be present & it will come to you.

Sonata Kay 2018-04-29 | Fell in love with this song the instant I heard it. Genius lyrics & I love the simplicity and minimalist approach to production, so had to cover it. The birds in the park loved it too apparently, some serious harmonies and bv's - they never disappoint :)
