Kirra Reef was, up until recently, completely buried by a sand pumping project. Given the amount of fish life we saw during this freedive, I think the future looks pretty good for Kirra!

Soldier crabs (Mictyris longicarpus) forming armies and just doing their usual stuff on the mudflats of Moreton Bay (Australia) I have watched these little guys on so many occasions now I thought I owed them a small video as a way of thanks.

A collection of videos from my trip to the National Preserve, Hanauma Bay. The visibility was 30m+ and the fish diversity truly incredible! While the inner section of the bay is usually swarming with tourists, a swim out and through the "strong current" buoys will land you in some beautiful water. Enjoy!

These are a collection of video clips from my trip to Heron Reef early in the new year. The water was warmer than I had ever felt it before and the island as dry as bone. During my week on the reef, I had a stream of songs by Andy McKee run through my mind. His inspirational tones have done a lot for me over the years. Please go out and buy his music! All of it!

They swim up to the lens of the camera (GoPro Hero 2) and have a looksie! I think they may actually be able to see their own reflection also. Anyway, here is a small collection of clips of the inquisitive fellas! WATCH IN HD!!!!

The Coral Trout early on in the video were acting very strange. They were all looking into a single coral colony, so I waited to see what they would do. After a while a small moray eel emerged and the fish were noticeably attracted to it. I have read somewhere that groupers and morays hunt together? Maybe this behaviour extends to the coral trout? Interesting!
All footage captured while freediving and filming with a Gopro 2.

The big ones at the end are Giant Shovelnose Rays (Glaucostegus typus) and are impressive in size. They look to be a middle ground between a ray/skate and a shark (but dont have the dangerous aspects of either - barb/teeth) but are completely harmless. Amazing to swim with.

The loggerhead at the end came up to a group of us who were in the water at night to observe the annual coral spawning event. This was a huuuuuuge individual and I think he was rather curious about what all the lights were about! Its best not to shine such a bright light in the eyes of an animal such as this, but it appears that at least a couple of the group struggled to remember this. A true giant of an animal!

I had a great time swimming with and filming the White-tip Reef Sharks (Triaenodon obesus) and Lemon Sharks (Negaprion brevirostris) of Heron Reef. Im learning that to get closer for filming, you need to have a good line underwater and be moving slowly. All clips were filmed while snorkeling/freediving using a Gopro HD Hero 2.

I literally got stung around 50 times by the blubber jelly fish (Catosylus mosaicus) during the filming of this, and if you watch the video through you will see why! The wrecks have formed an artificial reef system that shelters the bay and creates a nice mooring location for visiting boats. The current has scoured out the sand alongside and under some of the rusty hulls, make for some deep lines to freedive down into and along.
All footage filmed with a GoPro HD (eyeofmine flat lens) and edited in Sony Vegas.

The clips included are a mixture of first person and third person view (with the camera facing towards myself for depth perspective). The majority of the first half of the video is third person view free diving and the second half, wildlife!
