And this desire is going to inspire you to want to know how to communicate, that desire that happens in the real world."
Markos is an American of Greek and Italian descent from New Jersey, whose debut to classical opera came in 4th grade when he began singing at the NYC Metropolitan Opera House.
This experience saw him singing in Italian, French, and German, and he eventually went on to sing on cruise ships for 7 years after graduation.
Waking up in a different country every day inspired him to immerse himself in different cultures, and this globe trotting led him to believe that the best way to learn a language is "baptism by fire." In other words, to learn a language, you must use it.
In this video Markos shares his story of music, traveling, and languages. It focuses on the concepts of language "keys," something that unlocks some aspect of life for you, and language "charms," something that is a source of joy and helps you connect with others despite not requiring much time investment.
"Keys and charms" help you decide which languages to learn and juggle learning multiple languages. He wraps up by giving his take on some language learning FAQs, like how to get started or what to do if you've been learning for awhile but don't feel comfortable speaking.

1. An idiomatic translation of the sentence
2. A literal word-for-word translation, in the word order of the target language (TL)
3. “Active reverse translation” in which the TL words from step 2 are partially blanked out and you must fill in the blanks
