Unveiling my Number 1 Trophy!

I thought about going somewhere fancy or beautiful to film myself unwrapping it and then I remembered that I’m a studio hermit so what better place to unbox my no.1 trophy for ‘As We Once Were’ from the Official Charts company than in the very studio where so much of it was made. So very grateful for everyone who was a part of this record and made this happen 🙏🏻

Released on August 7th via Last Night From Glasgow, the new album features an all-star cast of guest vocalists, including Mercury Music Prize nominees Hannah Peel and Welsh-Cornish musician Gwenno, long-time collaborator James Dean Bradfield from Manic Street Preachers, and newcomer Eaves Wilder (Secretly Canadian). Self-produced by the three-times Music Producers’ Guild nominated Davies at Black Lodge, mixed by Dave Eringa (Manic Street Preachers, Idlewild) and Mikko Gordon (Idles, The Smile), and mastered by Jon Astley (The Who, Tori Amos), Davies describes the album as “a conversation across four generations of women”, born out of the collision of two moments from the recent past: being given access to work with all of Pete Townshend’s vintage synths at the Townshend Studios in West London, against the backdrop of the birth of her first child and the discovery of her grandmother’s voice on a cassette tape in her mother’s loft.

I'd wanted to write from Vita and Virginia's letters since I first found them as a queer teenager, when literature and music were the places I retreated to and realised there were other people out there like me. This is the story of how the song finally got made: written chorus-first on the organ, pulled briefly in a Motown direction (which sounds nuts to me now), rescued by a dark eighties Bunnymen vibe, sung with my queer choir of women (Bishi, Rookes and Vicki Falconer Pritchard, all the way from Australia), and finished by James Dean Bradfield of Manic Street Preachers, who was asked for guitar and sent back that incredible voice, just in case.

Lyrically inspired by the love letters between the two literary giants Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville West, Davies describes the track as “celebratory queer rock anthem. I wanted to to conjure that intoxicating feeling of being drawn into someone’s orbit for the first time.” A raucous and pulsating guitar-laden track - think Anna Calvi meets Fleetwood Mac - the single features guest vocals and guitars from James Dean Bradfield of Manic Street Preachers whom Davies has frequently collaborated and toured with.

The new single is the third preview from Davies' forthcoming third studio album, As We Once Were, to be released this Summer via her new label home with Scottish, ethically-minded record label Last Night From Glasgow.

The Anchoress on ‘Damsels’ and being inspired by Manic Street Preachers.

The Anchoress 2026-06-09 | The Anchoress on the backstory behind 'Damsels' the second track to be taken from her forthcoming third studio album As We Once Were. Catherine describes the track as a Manic Street Preachers style, rifled through a history lesson of feminist icons, taking lyrical inspiration from the history lessons that I got as a teenager listening to Faster and PCP by the Manics.

How Manic Street Preachers Inspired Damsels

The Anchoress 2026-06-09 | Damsels was always going to be my version of the Manics' 'Faster', the song that started it all for me. It's "a Manic Street Preachers style rifle through a history lesson of feminist icons, taking lyrical inspiration from the history lessons that I got as a teenager listening to 'Faster' and 'PCP', except this time it's strictly a girlzone." I talk through the whole backstory here, from the women who blazed the trail to why my grandmother was no damsel in distress.

The Anchoress (aka Catherine Anne Davies) returns with ‘Damsels’, the second track to preview from As We Once Were - a bold, unflinching new album from one of the UK’s most distinctive voices. With the album landing this August via Last Night From Glasgow, the 14-track record marks her third studio album release, following the Welsh Music Prize-nominated The Art Of Losing and the cult favourite Confessions Of A Romance Novelist.

‘Damsels’ is the second track to be previewed from the album, arriving on Friday 15 May 2026. Musically, it channels the urgent energy of Manic Street Preachers while lyrically paying tribute to generations of feminist icons. “It takes inspiration from the history lessons I got as a teenager listening to ‘Faster’ and ‘PCP’, except this time it’s strictly a girl zone,” says Davies.

The song sits at the heart of an album shaped by themes of motherhood, generational resilience and female strength in the face of loss and trauma. “I wanted to reclaim the idea of the ‘damsel in distress’ - it was never an archetype I identified with. I look back at my Mum and her Mother and all I saw was strength. ‘We are made of Welsh steel,’ she used to say to me.”

"When I was choosing which tracks to cover for the ‘Versions’ project, I was mostly led by instinct, where I felt I could add a new or different perspective to something that was already really familiar to listeners. I tackled some pretty sacred cows - Radiohead, Nirvana, Depeche Mode. It was sometimes nerve wracking releasing one into the wild, waiting to get told you’ve “ruined” someone’s favourite song. I wanted to choose songs that had a special significance to fans and be brave and courageous in rethinking that in a new way.

There can be a bit of snobbery around covers. People assume that they just slavishly follow the original recording, missing the amazing opportunity that they present to re-envision and re-cast something - a real gift to anyone developing their craft as a recording engineer or producer. I found myself exploring arrangement and production particularly deeply because of the nature of having a ready-made song to play with. It’s a gift to allow yourself to focus purely on the components parts of the arrangement and then, in turn, dig deeply into how the production and mix will serve your chosen mood and take on the already familiar song, without having to worry about whether you want to refine a lyric or if the chorus is “impactful” enough. The heavy-lifting has already been done by the songwriter. Your job is only to re-cast it in a way that makes the listener hear it in a new or different light.”
