2020 Renault Float - Future Revolution Air Car!
updated
When Rolls-Royce Motor Cars came to update its Phantom family of models, the words of company co-founder Sir Henry Royce informed everything that designers, engineers and craftspeople set out to achieve: Take the best that exists and make it better.
This historic cri de coeur came to represent the significant improvements made to the marque's pinnacle cars when launched in 2012, and continues to resontate strongly from the design studios to the assembly hall at the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood today.
But that was only part of Royce's famous quote. Take the best that exists and make it better: when it does not exist design it.
These words informed the development of Rolls-Royce Wraith: nothing like it existed in the Rolls-Royce portfolio, nor the wider automotive world.
The expression of when it does not exist, design it is steeped in Rolls-Royce heritage. It can be seen in the pioneering spirit and vehicles that defined the company in the early 20th century. Adventures that took place on land, sea and in the air, that once led Rolls-Royce to three consecutive world speed records.
And of course there was the company's founding forefather, the Honourable Charles Rolls, a man whose appetite for adventure drove him to success in motor racing, ballooning and aviation. He became the first man in history to cross the English Channel and return without stopping in a powered aircraft, an achievement that earned him the highest praise of King George V.
Luxurious interior
Rolls-Royce Wraith's coach doors open to present an inviting, harmonious interior space - one with every possible comfort, delivered in a thoroughly modern way.
The eye is immediately drawn to the contemporary panelling that elegantly adorns the inside of the doors and sweeps round the entire lower space. Finished in either wood or leather, the effect draws the eye quickly around the cabin, similar in dynamic effect to the clean fastback style of the exterior.
Canadel Panelling
Wraith's mellow interior is the perfect space to present the debut of a very special new wood treatment , Canadel Panelling, a beautiful open grain wood. Tactile and with a light satin finish that retains the material's natural texture, this crafted wood contributes to the cabin's warm, contemporary ambiance, evoking the interior feel of a fine, super-luxury yacht.
In this wood configuration, the car stands as a testament to the skills of craftspeople in the wood shop at the home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England. Every detail has been carefully considered; the veneer gently curved to hug the contours of the doors, delighting the eye as well as increasing space for occupants. In orientation the grain is angled at 55 degrees increasing dynamic flow through the interior. Echoing the wood craftsmanship of its pinnacle stable mate Phantom, Canadel Panelling is bookmatched throughout, creating a perfect mirror image through the centre console and featuring a contemporary chevron pattern that runs through the centre of the car, adding to the sense of cutting edge dynamic.
Dynamism... and delicacy
The dynamic theme is reinforced when viewed from the driver's seat. Black chrome dials are framed by a black horseshoe sweep. Blood orange tips to gauge indicators pay homage to the marque's aviation heritage whilst the steering-wheel is thicker rimmed to build dynamic intent.
Detailed with a delicate subtlety, the interior complements Wraith's dramatic exterior aesthetic. Four individual seats cosset driver and occupants ensuring the most involving Rolls-Royce driving experience ever, whilst never compromising on pinnacle standards of comfort and contemporary elegance. Touches like the chrome bullet tips to recessed piping on the seat panels further enhances the sense of a vehicle tailored for performance.
The finest Phantom-grade natural grain leather adds to the luxury, its tactility unequalled in the motor industry. Detailing to armrests and panniers reinforce the opulence, inspired in their design by fine saddle-making.
Light from darkness
The Rolls-Royce principle of effortlessness has informed designers' thinking throughout. Perfectly appointed storage compartments for two iPads add convenience for rear seat passengers, whilst automatic door closing buttons located behind the a-pillar aid those in the front.
Warm and serene, Wraith's interior lighting bathes occupants in gentle light. Beyond this, additional ambient lighting comes on request - courtesy of reading lights above c-pillars and waterfall roof lights that deliver increased but unobtrusive illumination with a hint of Art Deco influence.

2018 Honda Civic Review
Likes
Sharp style in every body
Incredible value across lineup
Great turbocharged engines
Stellar safety record
Impressive fuel economy
Dislikes
Buzzy base engine
Breathtaking number of trims
Boy-racer look on some models
The Si could use more power
The 2018 Honda Civic is a good car made better by plenty of options and value at nearly every stop.
Forget what you know about compact cars. The 2018 Honda Civic spans a breathtaking number of configurations with multiple powertrains that climb quickly up the ladder of fun.
Honda makes available the compact car in a sedan, coupe, or hatchback body, with a trio of turbocharged engines (and one naturally aspirated version) and a grip of automatic or manual transmissions. Two common themes, regardless of body style or engine: a good ride and great fuel economy.
We rate the range at 7.5 overall with the implicit understanding that scoring such a staggering lineup is like rating all the fish in the sea collectively.
This year the Civic range is unchanged after a flurry of activity last year. The Civic is offered as a sedan, coupe, or hatchback in a long list of trims.
The LX trim level signifies a base version of coupe or sedan, with EX, EX-L, EX-T, and Touring grades increasing niceties and price along the way. Trim levels with the “T” appendage denote an optional, uprated turbocharged engine; trims with an “L” in their name denote leather upholstery. Along the way, “Navi” and “Honda Sensing” add navigation and active safety features, respectively. Touring models get both, along with other creature comforts.
Hatchbacks ascend from LX to EX, EX-L, Sport, and Sport Touring, the latter two providing bigger wheels, sportier looks, and center-mounted exhausts. Hatchbacks are only fitted with turbocharged engines.
Last year Honda added high-performance versions, the Civic Si and Type R, that are mercifully monospec.
It’s too much to ask before coffee, so we advise an alert mind when considering the options. Interspersed among the trim levels are a few options, but the Civic is well-equipped regardless of variant.
The base 2.0-liter engine found in LX and EX models (without a “T”) is a commuter special, quiet and uninterrupted in many ways. The uprated 1.5-liter turbo-4 in the Civic is a revelation—its 174 horsepower is more than competent, and it’s the basis for the 205-hp Civic Si that’s entry-level performance.
The Civic Type R will attract eyeballs and the most money—it starts around $35,000. It’s a 2.0-liter turbo-4 with 306 hp and all the tricks: VTEC, VTC, and turbocharging.
Even base Civics get a 5.0-inch display for their audio system, but it doesn’t take much more to get a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Combined with very good safety ratings from official testers and available advanced safety features, the Civic is a good car hiding in plain sight.

The executive Italian sedan
A classic example of authentic Italian design, the Quattroporte has embraced gracefully the virtues of elegance and athletic attitude, particularly in the GranLusso and GranSport trims.
The best Italian designers have been involved in developing the design language of the Quattroporte throughout its 55-year history. In 1963, the first Quattroporte seamlessly fused the qualities of speed, style and luxury in a sleek body designed by Pietro Frua – and ever since, Maserati has been considered a master of sports sedan design.
The second-generation version in 1974 was designed by Bertone but it was Giorgetto Giugiaro’s 1979 Quattroporte that saw great success. Marcello Gandini redefined the flagship sedan with his compact 1994 Quattroporte, while Pininfarina’s 2003 model set the segment’s design standard for almost a decade.
The modern-day Quattroporte is as distinctive and exclusive as its predecessors the least. The dominant, powerful nose is sculpted around the Alfieri-shaped three-dimensional grille, which is pointed and imposing, featuring vertical chrome rib elements that contrast with the depth of the ‘sharknose’ effect.
Beneath the rear bumper, the GTS version can be identified by its twin, trapezoidal, integrated dual pipe exhaust system in chrome-plated stainless steel, while the V6 and diesel models use twin, oval, dual exhaust pipes.
--Interior design
Superior materials and improved ergonomics
Pieno Fiore natural leather and new veneers are available in the sumptuous interior of the Quattroporte, which also features improved infotainment graphics and climate control ergonomics.
Thanks to its long wheelbase, the latest-generation Quattroporte has set a benchmark for roominess, while its stylishly neat interior gives both driver and passengers the sensation of travelling in an exclusive first class lounge.
The interior delivers streamlined, wraparound forms, which endow the dashboard and tunnel with a feeling of lightness. The dashboard features a full-width surface in a variety of exclusive, precious trims, underlining the refined character of the Quattroporte and rounded out by decorative inserts on the front and rear door panels.
The interior is focused around a driver-friendly interface. The instrument cluster’s large, analogue rev-counter and speedometer flank a 7” TFT display for many of the car’s operational features. The leather-finished steering wheel is electrically adjustable for both reach and height.
The MTC+ infotainment system is based on a high-resolution 8.4” capacitive touch screen, which features updated graphics and improved Climate Control functions for MY19. A double rotary knob in forged aluminium provides intuitive control of the audio volume and other functions.
--Powertrain
High performance V6 & V8 engines
The family of Maserati petrol units boasts the top-of-the range 3.8-litre V8 for the Quattroporte GTS and the 3.0-litre V6 for the Quattroporte, Quattroporte S and S Q4 versions. Both engines are twin-turbocharged, developed by Maserati in collaboration with Ferrari and assembled in Maranello.
The Quattroporte is also available with the 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine with AdBlue technology. This powerful unit is specifically developed by VM Motori according to Maserati specifications in terms of performance, efficiency and driving satisfaction.
--Maserati Soundtrack
Following the best Maserati tradition, the sound and performance of the exhaust system is controlled by pneumatic valves in the pipes of each bank, and passes through the unique Maserati Sound Tank to maintain the rich aural tradition of the brand.
In Normal driving mode, the bypass valves are closed up to 3,000 rpm to produce a comfortable and discreet engine sound. In Sport mode, the exhaust valves are opened, offering the shortest possible high-energy route for the exhaust gases, which gives the Quattroporte its maximum engine performance and unique Maserati sound.

Porsche raises the "Sport" in SUV, yet again.
HIGH ON A RIDGE rising from the Aegan Sea, a dirt track meandered out of view. We had to know where it went. Fortunately, the vehicle we’d come all the way to the mountainous island of Crete to test was perfectly capable of exploring the varied terrain.
The Porsche Cayenne transitioned with ease from screeching around asphalt corners to bumping along rutted dirt roads. After rounding a bend and ascending the spine of a tall hill, we were rewarded with astounding views of the Greek island and the turquoise water all around. This is the promise of the performance SUV, a promise the Cayenne was first to fulfill, and which the new one does better than ever.
When the model was introduced in 2002, Lexus already had its RX crossover, Mercedes had the ML, and BMW was selling the popular X5. But it wasn’t until Porsche, the purest of purist brands, staked its reputation and finances upon an SUV that these trucklike machines truly pivoted toward driving enthusiasts. The first-generation Cayenne handled better than any sport-ute that had come before, and it went on to sell 280,000 units worldwide.
We’re still feeling the effects of that shift today, with the advent of Bentley’s Bentayga and the forthcoming Lamborghini Urus. The performance SUV has become a mainstay. Though a boon for sales, this also puts Porsche in a quandary. With more competitors in every direction, the Cayenne— grand dame of performance SUVs—can’t just compete, it has to dominate.
Enter the redesigned, third-generation Cayenne, which assumes a more carlike appearance. It’s lower and wider than before and takes on some of the Panamera’s cues, including a light strip in the taillamps that spans fender to fender. Still, the Cayenne leans more toward a lineman’s bulk than a quarterback’s wiry strength. The hood is high and the overhangs short, so the nose falls off abruptly. A proliferation of air intakes, especially on the Turbo model, masks the considerable height of its short snout.
The interior has also been Panamera-fied. The center console used to look like something from the control room of a 1980s nuclear missile silo, with rows of buttons framing each side. That cluttered design gives way to the clean aesthetic of glass panels featuring touch-sensitive controls with haptic feedback. They look slick, but you have to take your eyes from the road to operate them reliably, and some functions, like shutting off the engine’s automatic start/stop feature, are now buried in the touchscreen’s menu system.
The three Cayenne variants available at launch—base, S, and Turbo—each get smaller, more powerful engines than their last-gen counterparts. The biggest improvement is in the base model, where a 3.0-liter turbo V-6 produces 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque—an increase of 40 hp and 37 lb-ft over the outgoing 3.6-liter naturally aspirated engine. Stuck behind a gravel truck with only short straightaways between curves, the Cayenne proved plenty powerful enough to catapult around slower traffic, the eight-speed automatic promptly dropping down two gears on full throttle.
The Turbo, with its twin-turbocharged, 550-hp 4.0-liter V-8, is capable of even greater feats. According to Porsche, it’ll hit 60 mph in 3.7 seconds with the launch-control function that comes with the optional Sport Chrono package. But it doesn’t quite feel like your eyeballs are going to sink into your brain in that way we’ve come to expect from the venerated Turbo name. It’s the heaviest of the new Cayennes, which, despite weight-saving measures that benefit all Cayenne models—such as using aluminum for most of the unibody and a lighter, lithium-ion battery—means it’s still quite portly. At least the available carbon-ceramic brakes are well suited to hauling down its 4800 pounds.
Our hands-down favorite is the S model. Its twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6 has ample shove (440 hp, 405 lb-ft of torque), but at 4500 pounds, it feels noticeably more nimble than the Turbo. It is also the model in which we most appreciated the optional rear-axle steering, which until now has not been available on the Cayenne. There’s an arsenal of other high-tech performance aids available, including an improved active roll stabilization system and adaptive air suspension, among others.
Every version of the new Cayenne we drove felt more capable than its predecessor, with better performance, increased comfort, and less body roll than expected for such a tall vehicle. Minor interior quibbles aside, it’s just easier to live with and well poised to stay at the head of the pack.

The GT-R and Italdesign both celebrate their 50th anniversary this year, so Nissan and the Italian design house decided to collaborate on a very special project. The result is the striking GT-R50 by Italdesign, a one-off build to celebrate all things GT-R as well as show off the talents of Italdesign's crew.
Right off the bat we'll tell you that the GT-R50 isn't the next-generation R36 GT-R. That point was stressed by Nissan design boss Alfonso Albaisa, who described the car as a GT-R without limits.
“Although this is not the next-generation GT-R, it is an exciting celebration of two anniversaries in a provocative and creative way—wrapping one of Nissan’s best engineering platforms and Japanese design with Italian coachbuilding,” he said in a statement.
We wouldn't rule out some design elements making it onto a future GT-R, however. If you compare it with Nissan's Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo from 2014 (shown above), you'll notice similarities such as the wedge-shaped headlights, floating taillights and curved rear wing.
We were told it was actually Nissan design teams that came up with the lines for the exterior and cabin, with Italdesign then tasked with making those lines a reality.
Starting at the front, the GT-R50 features a distinct golden inner element that stretches across almost the full width of the vehicle. The hood has a more pronounced power bulge, and the thin LED headlights stretch from the wheel arch to the lip above the outer cooling intakes.
To give the car a sleeker look, the roof was lowered by about two inches, and moving to the rear the designers added an expanse of gold trim to emphasize the muscular flares around the wheels. In a dramatic fashion, the rear window line descends longer and deeper than on the standard car. A unique set of wheels, measuring 21 inches across and wearing Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, further accentuate the car's bold stance.
Inside, two different carbon fiber finishes were used across the center console, instrument panel and door linings, along with a combination of Alcantara and leather. Gold accents echo the exterior treatment across the instrument panel, doors and new switchgear. The final touch was a race car-style digital instrument cluster to replace the standard unit of the GT-R.
As our heading reveals, performance of the car was boosted substantially. The familiar 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 now pumps out 710 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque, up on the 600 hp and 481 lb-ft of the GT-R Nismo.
Key powertrain upgrades included larger diameter turbochargers borrowed from the GT3 race car, a larger intercooler, revised camshaft profiles, high-flow fuel injectors, and stronger internals (crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods and bearings). The ignition, intake and exhaust systems were also all optimized, and the six-speed dual-clutch transmission, drive shaft and differentials were all also beefed up to handle the extra grunt.
In other words, GT-R tuning done right.
Nissan said the GT-R50 will make a formal debut in July at an event in Europe.

Updated and expanded £1.2bn Track25 business plan includes:-
Between now and 2025, 18 new models and derivatives to be launched
McLaren sportscar and supercar range to be 100 percent hybrid by 2025
A new Ultimate Series car as a successor to the McLaren P1TM
Evaluating “augmentation” technology to introduce step-change in driving experience
New retail markets being evaulated
Production to reach 6,000 mid-engined sportscars and supercars a year
At today’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, luxury British sportscar and supercar maker McLaren Automotive has announced its ambitious, wide-ranging business plan that will take the company to its fifteenth anniversary.
Track25 is an evolution of the Track22 plan that was first launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 2016 and the updated plan now includes significant new milestones.
Track25 sets out a clear roadmap for future vehicles, production and technology that will allow the brand to continue to position itself as a major global player in the sportscar and supercar market.
McLaren is committed to ensuring that its sportscar and supercar range will be hybrid within seven years. True to the spirit of pushing the boundaries of technology to benefit drivers, McLaren will also evaluate new augmented driving features and help develop a lighter, superfast-charging, high-power battery system for performance applications that is expected to have over 30 minutes of electric range around a race track.
The company will also continue its drive to win the new supercar ‘weight race’ by ensuring, as it does today, that each of its products is the lightest in their segment. This complements a £50m investment in developing and manufacturing the future of lightweighting technology with the soon to-open McLaren Composites Technology Centre (MCTC). Once fully operational, the MCTC will mean around 57 per cent of vehicle content by value will be UK sourced.
Having launched the world’s first ever petrol-electric hybrid-hypercar five years ago with the iconic McLaren P1TM, fittingly McLaren plan to unleash its successor as part of the Track25 plan.
While staying faithful to the core idea of creating and hand-assembling the world’s best drivers’ cars, McLaren will remain focussed on crafting mid-engined sportscars and sportscars.
Investment in 18 new models or derivatives will help lift production by almost 75 per cent over current levels to around 6,000 cars a year by the middle of the next decade. As now, all will be hand-assembled at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking, England.
Alongside a focus on the on-track and on-road experience, McLaren will introduce technologies designed to improve the owning experience. Cars will feature enhanced cyber protection, improved vehicle tracking and over-the-air (OTA) software updates, allowing McLaren customers to benefit from new features without the need for inconvenient downtime at retailers.
Currently retailed in 31 markets around the world through an 86-stong retailer network, McLaren Automotive is looking at both expanding in existing markets as well as evaluating several major new markets including Russia, India and Central/Eastern Europe. Rising demand means the aim will be to reach 100 retailers within the life of the Track25 plan.

Limited edition of 100 Mulsannes to celebrate upcoming centenary
Homage to founder W.O. Bentley’s famous final 1930 design
Each Mulsanne holds a slice of crankshaft from W.O.’s personal car
Mulliner designers take inspiration from golden age of British motoring
True collector’s item as Bentley approaches centenary in 2019
Public debut to be at Monterey Car Week (August 24-26)
Watch a film about the limited edition at
Bentley Motors is demonstrating the beauty of bespoke with a new very special limited edition Mulsanne. The Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner pays homage to the founding father of the company and incorporates a genuine piece of Bentley history in every car.
Inside each of the 100 limited edition Mulsannes, a slice of the original crankshaft taken from W.O. Bentley’s personal 8 Litre car decades ago – the last model he designed for Bentley Motors back in 1930 – is displayed.
As Bentley approaches its centenary in 2019, Mulliner designers reflected on the last 99 years of an extraordinary British automotive story to imagine the new Mulsanne W.O. Edition. In doing so, they have created a truly unique collector’s item.
The Mulsanne W.O. Edition can be specified on any of the three-model Mulsanne range, based on customer preference. Key features include a colour split interior cut from Heritage Hide reflecting the patina of vintage cars, elegant Beluga black wheels, and a stunning cocktail cabinet or bottle cooler featuring a slice of W.O.’s own 8 Litre crankshaft set into the armrest.
This special model will make its public debut at Monterey Car Week in California USA in late August, with customer deliveries commencing in 2019 – Bentley’s centenary year.
The Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner – A Piece of History
The new Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner draws on design cues taken from the 8 Litre – built in an era that has been defined as the ‘golden age’ of motoring in Britain. Just 100 examples will be handcrafted by Mulliner.
The interior displays a range of exquisite features inspired by luxury living in the 1930s – key to which is the Mulliner illuminated cocktail cabinet. A marquetry scene on the handcrafted unit – depicting the geometric front matrix grille and headlight of the 8 Litre – reveals a display window, inside which a piece of the crankshaft from W.O. Bentley’s own 8 Litre car is showcased. Just below the machined metal display case is an inscription detailing the significance of the Bentley artefact.
To create the marquetry scene, a number of different veneers and materials were used. Four different wood types give contrast and depth to the piece, while aluminium is used to achieve the highlights, signature and geometric pattern. The diamond-like borders that run parallel to each side add to the contemporary look while retaining an art deco feel. The piece is finished with W.O.’s signature.
An interior colour split made from luxurious Fireglow Heritage and Fireglow hide is complemented further by Beluga hide detailing and blind stitching. Dark Stain Burr Walnut veneer extends to the minor gauge panel, steering wheel rim and other areas.
The Mulsanne is finished with Fireglow lambswool rugs, glass tumblers, privacy curtains to the rear doors, and a rear seat entertainment system.
The Mulsanne W.O. Edition further enhances its formidable road presence with Onyx paintwork (although customers can specify other colours from Bentley’s extensive pallet), chrome bonnet strip and graceful Flying B Mascot atop the optional chrome radiator shell and grille. A discreet W.O. Bentley signature badge is displayed on the lower bumper, while special centenary badging adorns the self-levelling wheel centres and door treadplates.
The Mulsanne W.O. Edition can be specified on any of the three-model Mulsanne range, based on customer preference. Each model is already a true statement of Bentley’s innovation and craftsmanship. Bentley’s flagship model is the world’s finest handmade car, representing the ultimate combination of luxury and performance.
The Bentley 8 Litre – The Last Car Designed By W.O.
The 8 Litre was described as W.O. Bentley’s finest grand tourer. Launched in 1930, it was also the last car he personally designed for Bentley Motors.
It was the largest and most luxurious Bentley of its time, featuring the most powerful engine of any car available in Britain – a 7,983cc straight six that offered remarkable performance. W.O. said of the 8 Litre: “I have always wanted to produce a dead silent 100-mph car, and now I think we have done it.”
Originally registered GK 706, W.O.’s was the second 8 Litre off the production line and became his personal transport. He commissioned HJ Mulliner to build a saloon body on the 12-foot, short-wheelbase chassis. W.O. was then forced to sell his beloved car in 1931.

The 2018 Land Rover Discovery is a spacious three-row crossover with more capability than anything that doesn’t ride on tank tracks.
The 2018 Land Rover Discovery is a full-size luxury SUV that's an old name on new ideas.
It's better at cheating the wind and carrying families.
It carries over essentially unchanged from last year’s new model, and earns an impressive 7.4 overall. Fuel economy is always going to hold back a 5,000-pound SUV, but it excels in comfort and performance.
The Discovery’s profile will be foreign to people familiar with the nameplate. Land Rover ditched the brick-in-the-wind shape of earlier generations for a smoother shape that cuts a cleaner hole through the air. It reads nearly bulbous in photos, but in person, nose-to-nose, the Disco is still as big as it’s ever been. We bemoan the lost “alpine” windows and tail-mounted spares of yesteryear, but will willingly trade both for this vehicle's impressive off-road prowess.
One historical note: The Discovery name disappeared here in the U.S. after the 2004 model year, when it was replaced by the LR3 and subsequently the LR4. But those two boxy 'utes were badged as Discoverys elsewhere, so the name only took a vacation from us.
Under the hoods of most new Discovery models will be a capable and powerful 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 that asks for premium unleaded. It smoothly delivers 340 horsepower, which is enough for highway passing, but requires more attention and a little heavier feet off-road than we were expecting.
An optional turbodiesel V-6 solves that dilemma for us. It’s prolific 443 pound-feet of pull comes on song much earlier in the rev range, and it returns marginally better fuel economy. It’s $2,000 dearer than the gas engine, but we’d recommend most buyers consider the oil-burner: it’s quieter, stronger, and smarter.
Like anything with a Land Rover badge, the new Discovery comes at a premium. Base models start at around $51,000, but HSE Luxury-trimmed Discovery SUVs can summit $80,000 almost as easily as they can ascend the nearest mountain.
Set course for the grocery store via Mount Denali. The Discovery almost demands it.
Performance
There are no bad picks for powertrain in the Land Rover Discovery, but for our money, the diesel and air suspension setup unlock a world of terrain to explore.
The Land Rover Discovery has refined its on-road behavior in ways that belie the SUV’s prowess off road.
The standard gas V-6 and optional turbodiesel V-6 are both impressive. Same goes for its 8-speed automatic and ride, which is improved by an optional air suspension that we don’t think should be optional at all—it’s bundled with the Discovery’s third row and low-speed transfer case that make the Discovery a formidable off-roader. We give the Disco an 8 for performance. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
The base engine is a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 that makes 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a smooth 8-speed automatic that’s effortless and smart, one of the better transmissions that we’re appreciating in every application.
The gas engine makes good use of its power, and can propel the Discovery to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds, but outright speed isn’t its forte. The gas engine makes most of its torque between 3,500 and 4,000 rpm—unusually high for a turbocharged engine—and needs more revs to lug the lumbering 4,900-pound SUV up boulders and trails. It’s just as capable as ever, but with a little more attention to the throttle than you might expect.
The optional turbodiesel V-6 makes its power much lower in the rev range (1,750 rpm), runs up to 60 mph faster (6.9 seconds), sips less fuel, and is quieter than the gas version. We admit that some might hesitate opting for the diesel engine, which costs roughly $2,000 more, but we consider it to be a worthwhile investment.
The diesel engine is mated to the same 8-speed automatic and powers all four wheels. We haven’t yet driven a Discovery with a base suspension, which is a traditional coil-spring setup. So far, our experiences have been with the air suspension that’s bundled with the third-row seats and off-roading gear.
The air suspension douses fussy roads and adds adjustability to add 1.7 inches to the Disco’s impressive 11 inches of ground clearance. The adjustable suspension also improves the Discovery’s approach, departure, and breakover angles and its wading depth, wheel articulation, you get the point. It’s worth serious consideration.

2019 Ford Mustang Review
The sixth-generation Ford Mustang is entering its fifth year on the market and there's plenty that awaits you in showrooms if you haven't pulled the trigger yet.
Speaking of triggers, the big news for 2019 is the arrival of a new Mustang Bullitt. The car celebrates this year's 50th anniversary of the movie “Bullitt” and comes with a unique 475-horsepower version of the Mustang GT's 5.0-liter V-8. The car has also been fitted with additional performance upgrades, and naturally it can be ordered in Dark Highland Green.
Also arriving for 2019 is the Mustang GT California Special, which is inspired by the Mustang GT/CS dealer special introduced for 1968. The modern car, based on the Mustang GT, gives a nod to the original with a blacked-out grille and a stripe. It doesn't boast any extra power so matches the 460 hp of the stock Mustang GT.
Ford has also expanded the color palette for 2019. Taking a leaf out of Dodge's playbook, the Blue Oval has introduced new vintage-inspired colors including Velocity Blue, Need for Green and the Bullitt's aforementioned Dark Highland Green.
Other updates include a rev-matching function for Mustang GTs equipped with a six-speed manual; a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system; and an active exhaust system for the Mustang EcoBoost.
The range starts with the Mustang EcoBoost, which is powered by a 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-4 delivering 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. The Mustang GT sports a 5.0-liter V-8 with 460 hp and 420 lb-ft. Both models are available with either a six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic, and there are also available performance packs to further sharpen things.
At the top of the range, for now, are the Shelby GT350 and GT350R models. These come with a 5.2-liter V-8 good for 526 hp and 429 lb-ft, and manual transmissions only. Next year, a Shelby GT500 boasting over 700 hp will join the range.

Jaguar XE 300 SPORT showcases all-wheel-drive traction and dynamic handling against Olympic champion speed skater Shaolin Sándor Liu, on 3km outdoor ice track
Sports saloon grips frozen surface in unique time trial against Hungarian short track speed skating gold medallist, with Team GB’s Elise Christie on board
New performance model with 300PS 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol engine laps the world’s longest ice track at Flevonice, the Netherlands, at average speed of 59km/h
300 SPORT model features Dark Satin Grey exterior details, interior Contrast Yellow Stitch and bespoke 300 SPORT branding
All engines now equipped with particulate filters to further reduce emissions** • 300 SPORT editions in Jaguar XE, XF and XF Sportbrake available to order now
After anchoring Hungary to gold in the 5,000m relay at the 2018 Winter Olympics, speed skater Shaolin Sándor Liu set a tough benchmark, negotiating the track at Flevonice Sports and Funpark in 4 minutes 4 seconds.
To give the icy time trial an extra edge, Shaolin’s girlfriend – Team GB skater Elise Christie – was part of team Jaguar. With Elise in the passenger seat, the XE 300 SPORT took full advantage of Jaguar’s advanced all-wheel drive and sophisticated traction technologies to maintain its composure. Jaguar Stability Development Leader Sean Haughey lapped the track in 3 minutes 3 seconds at an average speed of 59km/h (36mph).
Ice is one of the most demanding surfaces for any vehicle to contend with and this race demonstrated the XE’s all-surface capability and unrivalled handling in adverse conditions.
Staying true to Jaguar’s sports car DNA, the new 300 SPORT is equipped with the advanced 300PS 2.0-litre Ingenium petrol engine, which powers the XE from 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds (0-60mph in 5.4 seconds). With 400Nm of torque, its effortless acceleration around the 3km ice circuit was too much for the Olympic Champion.
I thought I would have a big advantage over the car on the ice and was pretty happy with my time considering the conditions but when I saw the XE 300 SPORT take off from the start line, I had a feeling it would be faster.
I was desperate to pit myself against the XE 300 SPORT but sitting in the passenger seat gave me an experience I’ll never forget. I didn’t think it would be able to lap the track as quickly as an Olympic Champion, but the Jaguar’s all-wheel-drive traction was really impressive.

Launch of luxury-segment model offensive +++ Integration into existing structures +++ Digitalisation of production processes making good progress +++
Dingolfing. At the start of this week, BMW Group Plant Dingolfing began series production of the new BMW 8 Series Coupé, the sportscar that will launch the BMW model offensive in the luxury segment. An amount in the low three-digit-million euro range has been invested in the site in Lower Bavaria in preparation for the new model series. A large number of digital innovations have also been integrated into the production process, including self-driving transport systems and smart devices.
Dr. Andreas Wendt, head of BMW Group Plant Dingolfing: “As the plant that builds the BMW 7 Series sedans, BMW Group Plant Dingolfing has outstanding expertise in producing vehicles for the luxury segment. We are optimally prepared for production of the new BMW 8 Series Coupé. I am sure our customers around the world will love this luxury sportscar.”
Stefan Schmid, chairman of the Works Council at the Dingolfing location: “I am proud that we will be producing the new BMW 8 Series Coupé at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. It will consolidate our position as a centre of competence for the luxury class and secure our site’s future.”
Smart material mix and flexible production structures
Intelligent lightweight construction, with a clever mix of materials, including steel, plastic, aluminium and carbon fibre, is used in the body of the new sportscar. In addition to the supporting structures at the front and rear of the vehicle, other components, such as the roof, doors, bonnet and the front firewall of the all-new BMW 8 Series Coupé, are made of aluminium.
For the first time in a series-production BMW model, the roof is available in carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) – which is also manufactured at the Dingolfing location in an innovative wet-pressing process.
Thanks to the BMW production system’s high level of flexibility, it was largely possible to integrate the new BMW 8 Series Coupé into existing production structures. The luxury sportscar, which will roll off the assembly line alongside BMW 5 Series and 7 Series models, relies on tried and tested manufacturing processes.
Innovations in the production process
In parallel with ramp-up of the new BMW 8 Series Coupé, digitalisation of logistics and production processes in Dingolfing continues apace. For example, in door assembly, parts are delivered to the line by autonomous tugger trains; on the finish line, collaborative robots measure gaps and misalignments.
BMW Group Plant Dingolfing increasingly makes use of wearables. These mobile computer technologies worn on the body support staff with their tasks. In addition to the ProGlove smart glove scanner, a so-called “exotics alarm”, for example, will use the vibrating alarm of a smartwatch to alert staff when a car with non-standard equipment options is coming up and requires special attention.
Virtual reality glasses have also been used for the first time in training assembly staff: Specific assembly processes for the new BMW 8 Series Coupé were videoed and viewed by employees through VR glasses. This enabled them to familiarise themselves with the new model and the correct fitment process before production ramped up.
Two engine variants available from launch
Two engine choices will be available when the new BMW 8 Series Coupé goes on sale in November 2018. The V8 engine in the BMW M850i xDrive Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 10.5 – 10.0 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 240 – 228 g/km)* delivers impressive power: The latest generation of the 4.4-litre eight-cylinder engine has been completely redeveloped to deliver a performance topping out at 530 hp and a torque of 750 Nm.
The BMW 840d xDrive Coupé relies on a diesel engine (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 164 – 154 g/km)* unlike anything else in the competitive environment to deliver superior traction and low fuel consumption. The 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder diesel power unit generates a maximum output of 320 hp and a maximum torque of 680 Nm.

New for 2019
After a complete redesign for 2018, the 2019 Toyota Camry will likely carry over mostly unchanged. One possible and notable addition could be offering Apple CarPlay like the new 2019 Avalon.
Trim Levels and Features
The trims offered on the 2018 model should carry over into 2019 and include the base L, the LE, the SE, the XLE, the XSE, the XLE V6, the XSE V6, the Hybrid LE, the Hybrid SE, and the Hybrid XLE. The sporty XSE includes, dark-tinted LED headlights and taillights, a unique gloss black front grille, 19-inch black machined wheels, a 10.0-inch head-up display, dual exhaust with quad tips, a leather-trimmed sport steering wheel, and textured interior metal trim. The premium XLE V6 comes equipped with a wireless charging pad, a 7.0-inch instrument cluster display, leather-trimmed and heated eight-way power front seats, Tiger Eye wood trim, chromed interior door handles, and an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. All the above features will likely carry over into 2019.
Performance and Fuel Economy
The Camry’s powertrains will likely carry over into 2019. The 2018 Camry’s engine options include the base 203-hp (206 hp in the XSE trim) 2.5-liter I-4 engine and the optional 3.5-liter V-6 that pumps out 301 hp. Both engines are backed by an eight-speed automatic that routes power to the front wheels. The 2018 Camry Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter I-4 paired with two electric motors for a total system output of 208 hp, though the 2019 Avalon’s version of this tech is good for 215 hp. For 2018, fuel economy figures for the non-hybrids ranged from 22/32 mpg city/highway in the V-6 to 29/41 for the I-4. Camry Hybrid fuel economy numbers range from 44/47 to 51/53 mpg depending on trim level.
Safety
The Toyota Safety Sense-P driver-assist package will continue to be standard. The package includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring with rear-cross traffic alert and automatic reverse braking are optional.
Technology
The Camry’s infotainment systems will carry over and includes a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen and an 8.0-inch touchscreen in the XSE and XLE V-6 models. The 8.0-inch system includes a nine-speaker JBL audio system and a Wi-Fi hotspot. We hope Toyota adds Apple CarPlay on some trims. The 2019 Camry will also offer a 10.0-inch head-up display and a 7.0-inch instrument cluster display (up from the standard 4.2-inch screen).

All new version of Audi’s smallest model
Passenger space increases
Late 2018 release date
Price from £15,500
Audi has released new official details about the second-generation A1 Sportback, set to arrive in Australia during the first half of 2019.
The A1 has grown 56mm longer than the outgoing model (4.03m), but its width is "almost the same" at 1.74m. Audi claims the A1 Sportback's boot is 65L more accommodating than before at 335L, which expands to 1090L with the second row seats folded, thanks to the bigger footprint.
All versions of the new A1 Sportback will be fitted with the company's new 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit digital instrument binnacle, complemented by a multifunction steering wheel. There are two versions available: the standard one, and an optional one with "an extended range of functions".
A central MMI Navigation Plus display measuring 10.1 inches is available, offering features like hybrid route guidance, satellite map views and new 3D city models. The new display also offers touch inputs and voice recognition, and offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Qi wireless charging is also available, as is a 560W 11-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. A sound system of unconfirmed wattage and speaker count is the standard audio option, however.
New details regarding the A1's driver assistance suite have been revealed, too. Standard lane-departure warning will notify if the driver is drifting from their lane at speeds of 65km/h and up, while the new 'pre sense front' (autonomous emergency braking) and adaptive cruise control operate from 0-200km/h in S tronic dual-clutch automatic cars.
In addition to the rear-view camera, the new A1 also offers a park assist system that can perform parallel and horizontal parking manoeuvres, along with forward perpendicular parks.
Three equipment lines will be offered: basic, advanced, and S line. Each can be customised with a range of exterior and interior packages, along with contrasting body and roof colours, so buyers have a wide range of options to make their A1 unique.
As previously reported, there are 10 exterior finishes on offer, with the roof, mirrors, side front spoiler lips and side sills all available in contrasting colours.
At launch there will also be an 'Edition' model, based on the S line equipment grade. Headlining features include 18-inch alloys finished in bronze/white/black depending on the body colour, Audi rings in 'foil' or rim colour on the sides, dark-tinted LED headlights and tail-lights, along with black Audi badging at the front and rear.
Inside, there's an optional 'contour and ambient lighting package' which involves LED light elements that can be configured in 30 different colours, which Audi says "brings the interior design to life".
Three engines have been detailed in overseas materials, but we're yet to confirm the engine line-up for Australia. The base 1.0-litre turbo makes 70kW, while the top-spec 2.0-litre four-cylinder puts out 147kW.
If you haven't already guessed, both engines feature in the Volkswagen Polo range, with the latter the same unit found in the GTI hot hatch.
Higher-spec engines are available with the 'Performance' dynamic package, involving red brake calipers and larger discs, along with adjustable dampers, a sound actuator and Audi drive select with adjustable modes, while a 'Basis' package for the entry-level petrol car includes sports suspension, larger brake discs and red calipers.
Alloy wheels are available in a range of designs measuring 15- to 18-inches, and the A1 will be available optionally with hill hold assist.

If I owned Jeep, the first thing I would do is change the Compass’ name.
"If you don’t need a larger vehicle, why haul one around all the time?"
The vehicle that previously wore this badge was a mediocre little thing, a plasticky lump based on the Dodge Caliber. Overall, its most notable attribute was that you could get it for cheap. Other than its name, this new Compass has about as much in common with the old one as a Fiat 500 does with a one-ton Ram truck.
You’ll pay more for the new Compass over the old, of course, but overall, it’s worth the bump.
The all-new Jeep Compass was unveiled for 2017, and it rumbles virtually unchanged into 2018, except for some new features in its available SiriusXM: travel link, traffic information, and Guardian, which includes remote services and assistance.
The Compass comes in front-wheel drive on the entry-level Sport and next-up North. Both can be optioned to 4x4, the only configuration on the Trailhawk and my tester, the Limited.
It’s based on the same platform that underpins the larger Cherokee and smaller Renegade. All Compass models use a 2.4L four-cylinder engine cranking out 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. The Sport can be ordered with a six-speed manual. Otherwise, you get a six-speed automatic when you order front-wheel drive, and a nine-speed automatic in four-wheeler models.
Pricing starts at $25,250 for the base Sport, and rises to a high of $35,245 for the Limited. Of course several options are available, and my ride was ordered from the factory with a heavy hand: $7,125 in extras, bringing it to $42,370 before freight and taxes.
That was a bit too hefty a tag for my compact ride, but on the other hand, I also like that more automakers are now allowing buyers to load up smaller vehicles, if that’s their preference. It used to be that if you wanted more features, you had to buy a larger footprint. My loaded-up Compass felt as well-equipped as some Grand Cherokees I’ve driven, but without the bulk that our two-member family doesn’t require. If you don’t need a larger vehicle, why haul one around all the time?
The Compass’ little engine is fine if you’re driving moderately, but it gets wheezy when you ask it for more and run it out. If you want some passing power, especially at highway speeds, you put your foot down and then count a couple of beats while the transmission downshifts and then everything catches up. The nine-speed gets it up into the higher gears as quickly as possible for fuel economy, but at the same time, I thought it shifted more smoothly than a Trailhawk I tested last year. Perhaps a bit of extra trans tuning for the Limited’s more luxo feel?
Also, in keeping with fuel economy and emissions, the engine has a automatic stop-start feature, which shuts it off at idle, such as when you’re sitting at a light. You get a noisy, rough jolt when it starts up again, and if it’s too much, you can disable the system by pressing a button.
Despite its somewhat lacklustre engine performance, the Compass redeems itself with its ride. It’s wonderfully smooth and composed, soaking up bumps and coddling passengers without feeling detached or floaty. The cabin is very quiet, too, which adds to the overall higher-end feeling. Against the official figures of 10.8 L/100 km in the city and 7.8 on the highway, I averaged 10.1 L/100 km in my week with it.
The four-wheel system runs primarily in front-wheel, seamlessly transferring power to the back when necessary. A dial on the console lets you adjust the system to better tackle snow, sand, or mud, and you can lock it into power to both axles when travelling at low speed in the sticky stuff. My tester did fine in some heavy snow, but if you want more of the full Jeep experience, opt for the Trailhawk. It adds a “rock” setting and low range with a 20:1 crawl ratio, and while it isn’t as gnarly as a Wrangler, this trim level is far more off-road capable than you’d expect.
The Compass is a handsome beast that looks a lot like a scaled-down version of a Grand Cherokee. North trims and up include automatic headlamps, roof rails, and fog lamps; while the Limited adds rain-sensing wipers (which, like all moisture-sensitive ones, work great in steadier precipitation, but fizzle in drizzle, and aren’t as effective). My tester was further optioned with a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, at a wallet-draining $1,595.
The interior design is close to that of the larger Cherokee, and it’s as handsome as the outside, with lots of soft-touch materials, contrasting stitching, and curvy styling. However, not all is perfect. There are several controls stuffed into the centre console, with no room left over for storage. There’s a small covered console box and door pockets, but no place up front to casually toss your phone or other items.

Drive Mode Select, which allows drivers to select the drive mode with the press of a button, is standard in all new Crowns. RS Grades offer a Custom Mode that allows drivers to select their preferred combination of powertrain, chassis, and air conditioning system.
Powertrain
2.5-liter Dynamic Force Engine Hybrid System
The 2.5-liter hybrid Crown adopts a hybrid system mounted with the TNGA 2.5-liter Dynamic Force Engine that achieves both great thermal efficiency and high output. The vehicle delivers exceptional driving performance and 24.0 km/liter*6 fuel efficiency (under the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's JC08 test cycle).
V-6 3.5 liter- Multi-stage Hybrid System
The 3.5-liter Crown is now the first Toyota brand car equipped with the Multi-stage Hybrid System. The Multi-stage Hybrid System is a mechanism that employs a hybrid system combined with stepped gears to control the output of both the 3.5-liter V-6 engine and the drive motor to provide strong driving force from low speeds to achieve powerful performance. By selecting an operating point for high system efficiency from the low-speed range to the high-speed range and, thus, expanding the range of BEV driving, the system achieves both an emotional driving experience and highly fuel-efficient, pleasant cruise.
Adjustments in engine rotations faithfully in line with the intentions of the driver and highly responsive motor assist are made possible by 10-gear-change control regardless of the driving situation, creating a direct acceleration sensation perfectly linked to pedal operation.
2.0-liter Direct-Injection Turbo Engine
The 2.0-liter Crown adopts a 2.0-liter direct-injection turbo engine whose output is enhanced by the increase of intake and exhaust port efficiency. High response is possible from low-rpm, while high torque is secured in the entire range.

The new Charleston plant is officially inaugurated today. The combined car launch and factory opening reinforce Volvo Cars’ commitment to the US, an important market for the company and its new premium sports sedan. The new S60 is the first Volvo car made in the US.
“The new S60 is one of the most exciting Volvo cars we’ve ever made,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “It is a true driver’s car that gives us a strong position in the US and China sedan markets, creating more growth opportunities for Volvo Cars.”
The new S60 is the first Volvo car to be sold without a diesel offer, signalling the company’s industry-leading commitment to electrification and a long-term future beyond the traditional combustion engine. In 2017 Volvo Cars was the first global car maker to announce its strategy that from 2019 all new models will be electrified.
Two turbo-charged and super-charged plug-in hybrid petrol engines will be available in the new S60: Volvo’s T6 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid that generates a combined 340hp, and the award-winning T8 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid that delivers 400hp*. Volvo’s proven T5 and T6 petrol engines will be available at launch.
In a first for the segment, customers can access the new S60 via Volvo Cars’ new premium subscription service Care by Volvo, which offers car access with no down payment via a monthly flat-fee subscription rather than ownership. Care by Volvo makes having a car as transparent, easy and hassle free as having a phone.
“The active chassis and drive modes deliver excellent control and an engaged performance that makes this a driver’s car,” said Henrik Green, senior vice president for research and development at Volvo Cars. “It also brings the acclaimed technology from our 90 Series and other 60 Series cars into this segment, making it one of the best sports sedans on the market.”
The new S60 shares Volvo Cars’ own Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, safety technology and infotainment system with the new V60 premium mid-size estate, launched earlier this year, as well as the top-of-the-line 90 Series cars and award-winning XC60, all of which have achieved industry-leading safety ratings. This makes the new S60 one of the safest cars on the road.
The City Safety with Autobrake technology assists the driver in avoiding potential collisions, and is the only system on the market to recognise pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. In a world first for the mid-size sedan segment, City Safety now also engages auto braking to mitigate oncoming collisions.
The optional Pilot Assist system – which supports the driver with steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130km/h – has been upgraded with improved cornering performance. The S60 also includes Run-off Road Mitigation, Oncoming Lane Mitigation and other steering assistance systems. The optional Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake further enhances safety for people inside and outside the car.
Volvo Cars’ Sensus Connect infotainment system is fully compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G, and keeps drivers connected at all times. The intuitive control is a tablet-style touch screen interface that combines car functions, navigation, connected services and in-car entertainment apps
Electrified versions of the new S60 also offer a performance handling upgrade called Polestar Engineered – developed by Volvo Cars’ electric performance arm, Polestar.
Polestar Engineered is available exclusively on the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid and is a complete offer that upgrades the car’s wheels, brakes, suspension and engine control unit, boosting the S60 T8 combined output to 415hp*.

The Audi A4 offers technology and quality when compared to its small executive saloon rivals
--For
Beautiful interior, very comfortable to drive, great interior tech
--Against
Looks like the old model, not as sporty to drive as rivals, pricey optional extras
Launched in 2015, the A4 is one of Audi’s most important models and the current version is one of the best-sellers in the class. The compact executive saloon has a focus on technology and comfort, and this makes it an interesting alternative for those who don’t want the sporty character of the BMW 3 Series.
Where the A4 has advanced over the old model is in the way it drives. Audi has listened to customer feedback and made the A4 softer and more comfortable and, as a result, easier to live with. There’s still plenty of performance on offer to keep you entertained, but if you’re after real thrills you're still better off with the Jaguar XE.
Where few of the A4’s rivals can compete, however, is inside. The cabin is beautifully crafted and a place than can transform the most arduous journey into an enjoyable one.
Audi has been a player in the small executive saloon market for many years now, and the latest Audi A4 is a front-runner in the class. Its main focus is on quality and technology, and it has a host of kit on board that will make the most discerning technophile happy.
Under the skin, the A4 uses the VW Group's MLB Evo platform, which features engines that are mounted lengthways under the bonnet, rather than across the engine bay. The MLB Evo platform is lighter than the old car, and the engine is mounted further back to improve weight distribution and improve the A4's handling.
The A4 range is available in four-door saloon and Avant estate body styles, but the Audi A5 - which comes in Coupe, Sportback and Cabriolet guises - and the Q5 SUV both use the same platform and majority of engines.
There are a wide range of engines on sale in the A4, ranging from the very economical to the hugely powerful. Petrol power comes from 1.4, 2.0 and 3.0 TFSI turbocharged petrol engines. The 1.4 TFSI 150 is a 148bhp motor, while the 2.0 TFSI comes in 190PS and 252PS forms with 187bhp and 249bhp respectively. The 3.0 TFSI 354PS is a 349bhp 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo unit that is exclusive to the high-performance S4. At the very top of the range, the RS 4 Avant has a 2.9 TFSI 450PS twin-turbo V6 that packs 444bhp and manages 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds.
Diesel power is handled by 2.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI diesels. The 2.0-litre version comes in 150PS and 190PS guises with 148bhp and 187bhp respectively, while the 3.0 TDI is badged either 218PS or 272PS with 215bhp and 268bhp.
A six-speed manual is standard on the 1.4 TFSI and the two lower powered 2.0 TDIs, while the seven-speed S tronic is available as an option. S tronic autos are standard for the most powerful 2.0 TFSI and lower powered 3.0 TDI, while the more powerful 3.0 TDI and S4 come with an eight-speed Tiptronic auto.
Quattro four-wheel drive is found on selected models across the A4 range. It's optional with the 2.0 TDI 190PS S tronic, and is standard with the most powerful 2.0 TFSI, both 3.0 TDIs, the S4 and RS 4.
The Audi A4 trim range looks straightforward, but Audi allows you to add all sorts of extras and option packages so you can personalise your car to your heart's content. The basic line-up is SE, Sport, S line and Black Edition, with increasing amount of standard kit the further up the range you go. At the top of the range, the S4 and RS 4 models are standalone models.
There are more rivals than ever to the Audi A4. Chief among them are the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class, while the Jaguar XE and Alfa Romeo Giulia are available if you don't want to conform to the German standard. Elsewhere, the Lexus IS offers hybrid drive and low tax costs, while top-spec versions of the VW Passat and Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport are trying to muscle in on sales.
Engines, performance and drive
Supple ride and smooth engines make for a relaxing drive, although the A4 is not the sharpest in its class
The fifth-generation Audi A4 moved to a new platform, adopting the VW Group’s MLB Evo architecture. The more advanced chassis is underpinned by multi-link suspension at both the front and rear, and although this differs from the front-end systems on rivals like the Jaguar XE and Alfa Romeo Giulia, the technology and components used are equally hi-tech and modern, while the option of £600 Adaptive Sport suspension gives customers the ability to tailor the set-up.
In quattro 4x4 guise, the performance of the A4 offers some stiff competition to its rival the BMW 3 Series. Generally the A4 feels connected to the road in all the right ways and the drive is direct and involving, but it doesn’t feel quite as exciting as the Jaguar XE.

2018 BMW 7 Series: New Car Review
For a luxurious sedan, the 2018 BMW 7 Series is a heck of driver's car. If there's any such thing as a bargain at this giddily expensive level, the 7 Series might be it, because it's like two cars in one.
To recline in the back is to be pampered, stretch out and enjoy more rear legroom than the regular Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Or you could sit in the driver's seat and have a surprising amount of fun. And as well as a full-size flagship, it's a technological masterpiece.
This is the most spacious sedan BMW has ever made, yet it's around 190 pounds lighter than the previous generation. Much of that is because of the frame's radical construction. High-strength steel, die-cast aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) are all placed in optimum locations. The relatively thin A-pillars (for modern cars) have tubes of CFRP inside them that run from the top of the hood, over the doors and down to the trunk. An aluminum hood, trunk lid and door panels are then hung on this frame.
There are computers, cameras and sensors to make the car safer and more convenient than a 7 Series has ever been before, along with a standard-issue air suspension for total comfort and fine-tuned composure.
What's New for 2018?
Some renaming and restructuring of active driver aid packages.
What We Like
Cutting-edge construction; fabulous engines; high-class appointments; remarkable suspension
What We Don't
Nothing beyond the amount of dollars required to buy one
How Much?
$84,095-$157,695
Fuel Economy
The 740i has a 3.0-liter inline-6 engine turbocharged to produce 320 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates fuel consumption at 21 miles per gallon city, 29 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined when using the default rear-wheel-drive setup, or 20 mpg city/29 mpg hwy/23 mpg combined with optional all-wheel drive.
The 750i uses a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 developing 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. Again, rear-wheel drive is the basic setup. Fuel consumption is rated at 17 mpg city/25 mpg hwy/20 mpg combined, or 16 mpg city/25 mpg hwy/19 mpg combined with the all-wheel drive system.
Both versions have active grille shutters contributing to aerodynamic efficiency.
The 740e xDrive iPerformance plug-in hybrid version combines a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack (located under the rear seat) for a system total of 322 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque driving all four wheels. EPA ratings are 64 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) on the combined cycle. Electric-only range is 14 miles. When using just the combustion engine, it's estimated to achieve 27 mpg combined.
The M760i xDrive has a twin-turbocharged 6.6-liter V12 generating 601 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. Fuel consumption is 13 mpg city/20 mpg hwy/16 mpg combined.
The Alpina B7 xDrive makes a similar amount power -- 608 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque -- from a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. All-wheel drive is standard and fuel consumption is quoted as 16 mpg city/25 mpg hwy/19 mpg combined.
Standard Features & Options
Although not badged as such, the 2018 BMW 7 Series is the long-wheelbase version, offering maximum rear passenger space. BMW doesn't bring the shorter version into the United States.
The 740i ($84,095) comes with a comprehensive list of standard equipment. This includes 18-inch alloy wheels, full LED lighting inside and out, adaptive air suspension, quad-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, selectable drive modes, keyless entry/ignition, hands-free trunk operation, twin-panel panoramic sunroof, soft-closing doors, 10-way power-adjustable/heated front seats with driver's-side memory settings, parking sensors front and rear, rearview camera, rain-sensing wipers, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 10.2-in display and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with satellite/HD radio and a pair of USB ports.
The 750i ($97,395) has 19-in alloys, upgraded leather, power sunshade for the rear window, and 20-way multi-contour front seats. This model can also come with all-wheel drive, badged as the 750i xDrive.
Both versions are eligible for the Autobahn package, which uses cameras to read the road surface and then prompts the computer-controlled suspension to react accordingly. It also includes variable-ratio steering and rear-wheel steering (known as Integral Active Steering).

Debuting the next-generation of Acura design, performance and technology, and the model's first-ever A-Spec variant, the all-new 2019 Acura RDX goes on-sale at Acura dealerships nationwide on June 1. With a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP2) starting at $37,300 (excluding $995 destination and handling), the 2019 RDX comes standard with a class-leading array of premium features and technologies. Priced the same as the outgoing model equipped with AcuraWatch™ (now standard), the new RDX is thousands less than comparably equipped European competitors.
The all-new RDX is the first in a new generation of products developed from the ground up around Acura's Precision Crafted Performance brand direction, and is the top-selling nameplate in the compact luxury SUV segment3 since RDX launched in 2006, with cumulative U.S. sales exceeding 375,000 vehicles. The Ohio-made RDX is built on an all-new Acura-exclusive platform featuring a new VTEC® Turbo powertrain, the segment's only 10-speed transmission and the (available) next generation of Acura Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD™).
The new RDX offers a more luxurious and spacious interior, top-of-class power-to-weight ratio, and a long list of standard luxury features and technologies, including AcuraWatch™ safety and driver-assistive tecnhnology, an ultra-wide panoramic moonroof, next-generation Acura JewelEye™ LED headlights and the new True Touchpad Interface™, Acura's groundbreaking new user interface tailored around the driving environment.
The new RDX can be upgraded with the Technology Package and line-topping Advance Package. Available new premium features, depending on trim, include 16-way power adjustable heated and ventilated front seats, a 10.5-inch full-color Head-Up Display, 16-channel Acura ELS Studio 3D™ premium audio, Surround View Camera System, Cross Traffic Monitor and blind spot information System.
The RDX is also the first Acura SUV available with the A-Spec sport appearance package, which includes 20-inch wheels and low-profile 245/45R20 tires, gloss black exterior accents, large-diameter exhaust finishers, A-Spec badging and exclusive interior upgrades including an available red or black leather interior with black Ultrasuede® inserts.
RDX Design
The 2019 RDX is the first all-new model to fully express Acura's new exterior and interior design direction that first debuted in the Acura Precision Concept and Acura Precision Cockpit. The new RDX boasts a more premium and athletic stance with a longer wheelbase, shortened front overhang and wider track. The new design showcases Acura's signature diamond pentagon grille, next-generation Jewel Eye™ LED headlights and NSX-inspired front air curtains.
Inside, the new RDX impresses with sumptuous interior appointments, including available authentic brushed aluminum, stainless steel and Olive Ash wood accents, intricately sculpted sport seats, an ultra-wide panoramic moonroof and a high-deck floating center console that showcases the new True Touchpad Interface and the NSX-inspired drive mode dial.
With its 2.6-inch longer wheelbase and new packaging, the RDX provides expanded cabin space with class-leading rear legroom, a fully-flat rear floor, and a larger (+3.4 cubic feet) cargo area with an additional 1.7 cubic-feet of compartmented underfloor storage.
RDX Performance
The 2019 RDX is powered by a direct-injected and turbocharged 2.0-liter, 16-valve powerplant with DOHC VTEC® valvetrain mated to the segment's only 10-speed automatic transmission (10AT). Peak output of 272 horsepower (SAE net) and 280 lb.-ft. of torque (SAE net) bests RDX's key competitors, including Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Volvo, and delivers 40 percent more low-end torque than the outgoing 3.5L V6 for powerful acceleration.
The all-new RDX redesign also heralds the return of Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) to the RDX nameplate. This next-generation of Acura SH-AWD features improved rear-wheel torque capacity, up 40 percent over the previous-generation system, further amplifying the performance enhancing capabilities of Acura's dynamic torque vectoring technology. Now, up to 70% of torque can be distributed to the rear wheels, and up to 100% of that torque can be distributed to either the right-rear or left-rear wheel, creating outstanding control and agility. SH-AWD is among the most advanced all-wheel-drive systems available in a luxury automobile and the 2019 RDX is the first model to utilize this new generation.

The 2018 BMW 5 Series is fast, comfortable and overflowing with technology.
The 2018 BMW 5 Series lives up to the expectations set by its forebears. There's an engine for nearly every taste, and the car's handling capabilities are fundamentally sound. Factor in the 5 Series' latest tech and safety features, and you've got a prime pick for a midsize luxury sedan.
BMW redesigned its 5 Series last year, giving the car updated styling and a bit more interior room without increasing weight. This year brings more changes, too. The 2018 5 Series has three new powertrain options: a plug-in hybrid (530e), a six-cylinder diesel engine (540d) and a twin-turbo V8 (M550i) that puts the car very close to BMW M5 territory. We were already fans of the base 530i and the 540i, so these additions carry an added benefit, whether it be the efficiency of the 530e and the 540d or the muscular power of the M550i.
On the technology front, BMW continues to push the envelope, offering wireless Apple CarPlay integration, natural language voice recognition, and even a cool 3-D simulation of your car from the outside (you have to see to believe) by using the optional surround-view cameras. And as far as modern driver assist aids go, BMW's are among the best.
Of course, there are other luxury sedans you should consider, including the Audi A6, the Lexus GS and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. We think highly of the 5 Series within this group, though, and it earns a solid recommendation.
what's new
Three new 5 Series variants join the lineup for 2018: the 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid, the 540d xDrive six-cylinder diesel, and the range-topping M550i xDrive with its turbocharged V8. The 5 Series also gets some minor shuffling of options and packages this year.
we recommend
You'll very likely be content with the power from the 530i, but the extra power and more engaging sound of BMW's turbocharged six-cylinder make the 540i the 5 Series worth paying a little more for. In either case, we think the Driver Assistance Plus package, which adds a number of active safety features, is a must-have. We'd also add the Premium package to get keyless entry, heated seats and hands-free trunk opening.
trim levels & features
The 2018 BMW 5 Series is a five-passenger sedan available in five trim levels, all with different powertrains. The 530i (248 horsepower, 258 pound-feet of torque) and the 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid (248 hp, 310 lb-ft) are powered by variants of BMW's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Next are two six-cylinders: The 540i (335 hp, 332 lb-ft) gets a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, and the 540d (261 hp, 457 lb-ft) has a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel. At the top of the range is the M550i with its turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 (456 hp, 480 lb-ft). BMW's all-wheel drive, called xDrive, is an option on the 530i, the 530e and the 540i. It's standard on the 540d and the M550i. An eight-speed automatic is standard across the board.
trim tested
Each vehicle typically comes in multiple versions that are fundamentally similar. The ratings in this review are based on our full test of the 2017 BMW 530i (turbo 2.0L inline-4 | 8-speed automatic | RWD).
driving
If the driving experience is truly important to you, then the 530i is a sedan to consider. With the exception of upgraded brakes, this BMW doesn't rely on sheer horsepower or road grip to sling it around corners. What you get instead is a package that feels extremely well-rounded, which is better.
comfort
The 530i is a supremely comfortable car with impressive climate control features, highly adjustable and massaging seats, and a whisper-quiet, soft-riding cabin. The only issue we had with the climate system is its capacity to keep us properly chilled.
interior
The 530i's cabin is an excellent place to spend time as long as you aren't a tall rear passenger. The controls are as easy as they can be, but the countless functions take time to learn. Climbing in and out is a breeze, and between the camera aids and windows, there's no worry about blind spots.
utility
The 530i has a fairly generous trunk with flexible cargo configurations thanks to the 40/20/40-split folding rear seat. In-cabin storage has improved over previous years, and the car seat anchors are easily accessible. The amount of backseat space is the only concern for larger car seats.
technology
BMW is a technology juggernaut and one of the more aggressive manufacturers when it comes to innovative features. Most of them are useful, while some are cool parlor tricks, but we appreciate them all. But iDrive's character recognition may be getting too smart for its own good.

To improve the new Ford Mustang Shelby® GT350 driver confidence and lap times, Ford Performance leveraged its Mustang road course racing programs and all-new upcoming Shelby® GT500, infusing GT350 with the very latest in track and street technology.
“Somewhere, Carroll is smiling,” said Hermann Salenbauch, global director for Ford Performance vehicle programs. “The new Shelby GT350 is our ultimate track Mustang. We’ve stuck to Carroll Shelby’s original formula for winning championships and made our Shelby GT350 even better with the latest in race-proven aerodynamics, tire and chassis technology.”
From F-150 Raptor to the Ford GT supercar, Ford Performance is creating authentic performance cars, trucks and utilities that deliver heart-pounding excitement for customers around the world.
--Next-level chassis technology and aerodynamics
Building on a road course racing and track-focused legacy born in 1965, Ford Performance engineers and designers incorporated the latest advances in tire, aerodynamics and chassis technology into the 2019 Mustang Shelby GT350.
Working exclusively with Michelin, the team also engineered new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires with a Shelby GT350-specific tread pattern and different compound to deliver more grip for significantly improved acceleration and lateral acceleration, as well as braking. The 295/35 front and 305/35 rear tires are fitted to improve stiffness and optimize new 19-inch aluminum wheels.
An all-new rear spoiler with optional Gurney flap and optimized grille closeout was designed and tuned with experience gained from wind tunnel development of the Ford Performance Mustang road course racing cars and upcoming Shelby GT500 model. Together, they deliver significant rear greater aerodynamic efficiency when equipped with the new optional Gurney flap on the rear spoiler, which will be available after launch.
Upgrades to Mustang Shelby GT350’s standard MagneRide active suspension complement the aero and tire enhancements with recalibrated springs and revised damping to take full advantage of the improvements.
Stopping power is provided by six-piston front and four-piston rear caliper Brembo™ brakes. For added control and improved driver feedback, Shelby GT350’s electric power-assist steering and three-mode electronic stability control settings feature enhancements taken from Ford Performance’s hundreds of hours of competitive track testing.
Tuning with Billy Johnson in the driver’s seat
Billy Johnson knows racing. As a driver for the FIA World Endurance Ford GT and IMSA Mustang GT4 programs, Johnson has broad expertise in what makes for a great driver’s car. He worked with Ford Performance to dial in the Shelby GT350 for 2019.
Shelby GT350’s exclusive high-revving 5.2-liter V8 remains the most powerful naturally aspirated Ford production engine ever and the only one of its type in the segment – delivering 526 horsepower and 429 lb.-ft. of torque at a blistering 8,250-rpm redline. It’s mated to a track-proven and precise-shifting Tremec® 6-speed manual transmission.
Johnson said the result of the new Mustang Shelby GT350’s aerodynamics tuning, revised brake calibration, and much greater downforce is a more balanced, higher-performing car on the straightaways and especially in the corners.
“Along with improved grip, brake and chassis refinements, Shelby GT350 brings a whole new level of performance driving,” he said. “It’s a rewarding car to drive on track for amateurs and pros alike, while making the driver feel like a superhero. It’s confidence inspiring in corners and begs to be pushed harder and to take corners faster.”
More craftsmanship, technology and style
Inside, driver and passengers of the 2019 Mustang Shelby GT350 are treated to a comfortable, stylish and purpose-built cockpit boasting the latest in advanced technology and premium materials expected of a world-class sports car.
Fresh sporting cues include a standard machined aluminum instrument panel appliqué with an available exposed carbon fiber version, plus newly designed door panel inserts in dark slate Miko® suede with accent stitching. A wrapped center console offers rich world-class craftsmanship. Standard Recaro race seats with firm side bolstering and open pass-throughs for safety harnesses offer the highest level of performance, while new power-adjustable seating is available with Miko suede inserts for those looking for added comfort.

The new Lexus UX has made its debut at Geneva, and will rival the BMW X2 when it arrives towards the end of 2018
Lexus has revealed further details for its all-new UX small SUV at the Geneva Motor Show. The brand's first-ever compact crossover will go on sale later this year, with a choice of hybrid and petrol engines, as well as the option of front- or four-wheel drive.
The Lexus UX SUV takes the brand in a new direction. Chika Kako, UX chief engineer said: "Right from the start I focused on the target market; mid-30s, millennials.
"We tried to understand how they would expect a premium compact vehicle to change their lives and enable new experiences. That’s what led us to the basic vehicle concept for the UX."
The firm's latest SUV will rival cars like the Audi Q2 when it goes on sale, as well as all-new models like the BMW X2, Jaguar E-Pace and Volvo XC40. However, the UX's bold styling should ensure it stands out in what is becoming an increasingly-crowded market.
Familiar details such as the gaping grille, slim LED lights, rising shoulderline and sculpted bonnet can be seen in the front-end, while the single-bar rear light profile takes Lexus in a new design direction. The interior shows an evolved dashboard design over current Lexus models, with LFA-style switchgear, digital dials, and a widescreen infotainment system.
The UX is the first Lexus to sit on Toyota's GA-C global architecture, and along with the new platform the crossover will see the debut of two new powertrains. The first will debut in the UX 250h; a 2.0-litre petrol-electric 'self-charging' hybrid with 176bhp. All models get a CVT auto gearbox, although there will be a choice of front or 'E-Four' all-wheel drive.
In addition, Lexus will launch its new baby SUV in UX 200 guise, fitted with a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. The in-line four-cylinder unit is said to use "high-speed combustion to achieve enhanced thermal efficiency". It'll come with the brand's first 'Direct Shift-CVT', which allegedly offers all the efficiency of a conventional continuously variable transmission (CVT), but with a "direct driving feel". No power or torque figures have been announced, and it's not clear whether it'll be available in the UK.
Safety will be a key selling point for the UX, which will come with the latest version of Lexus Safety System+, including a pre-collision system and radar detection. Lexus Co DRIVE adds Lane Tracing Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control, while Auto High Beam and Road Sign Assist also feature.
Specs haven't been announced, and UK specific details won't be revealed for some time, though Lexus has confirmed there will be a racy-looking F Sport variant. Flooded with chrome details, 18-inch wheels and bigger bumpers, the Lexus UX F Sport will compete with cars like the Audi Q2 S Line and BMW X2 M Sport. Inside, you'll find sports seats and F Sport steering wheel and aluminium pedals, while suspension tweaks and a Sport S+ drive mode should make it sharper to drive.
The UX follows on from the concept version shown at the Paris Motor Show back in 2016, bringing the concept to life almost two years on from its debut.

Veloster retains unique two-plus-one door asymmetrical bodystyle configuration
Available 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with 201 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque
Generous cutting-edge infotainment and connectivity features
Standard multi-link rear suspension for agile dynamics
Starting at $18,500 for 2.0 manual-transmission model
Hyundai unveiled its all-new Veloster and Veloster Turbo models at the North American International Auto Show in January 2018. The fresh design was a collaborative effort of Hyundai designers from Seoul, South Korea and the U.S. design center in Irvine, California. The new Veloster features a comprehensive exterior and interior redesign, powertrain enhancements, and a bevy of new and improved infotainment and connectivity features. The 2019 Veloster began production in March 2018 in Ulsan, Korea, with U.S. market availability in the second quarter of 2018.
“Our new 2019 Veloster represents an even more compelling offering for young and young-at-heart automotive enthusiasts with more expressive design, involving dynamics and cutting-edge infotainment features,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president of Product, Corporate and Digital Planning at Hyundai Motor America. “When combined with Hyundai’s outstanding value and efficiency, the new Veloster is sure to attract a progressive new group of enthusiast buyers.”
ALL-NEW DESIGN
The Veloster merges the design appeal of a sport coupe with the versatility of an additional passenger side rear door in an asymmetrical two-plus-one configuration for easier rear-seat access. From the front, available LED headlights and LED Daytime Running Lights flank a striking new grille design. Functional air curtains add both a visual design cue and an active aerodynamic function. Hyundai’s signature cascade grille shape has morphed into a strong, three-dimensional design that sets the sport coupe apart.
Much of the redesign is derived from enhanced proportions and volume; the new shape clearly conveys focused dynamic performance, even standing still. Its stance is more muscular, with higher-volume fenders and wheel arches for a more planted appearance. The cowl point and A-pillar are further rearward and now connect the hood line and belt line into an integrated, powerful gesture. Available 18-inch alloy wheels aggressively fill the wheelhouse openings. Further, the roofline has been lowered for a unique profile and a distinctive coupe-inspired essence. The fender line is also more coupe-like, and the rear now has a more aggressive integrated diffuser design. Available LED taillights help complete the rear view with a high-tech appearance.
Also available is a full darkened roof treatment for a high-contrast performance appearance. Veloster’s dynamic rear design has a distinctive glass hatch and center-fascia chrome exhaust tips, with a single outlet for the 2.0-liter model and dual-outlets for Turbo and R-Spec models.
INTERIOR
The asymmetrical design carries through to the interior, with a driver-focused interior layout and on the Turbo Ultimate, a contrasting color environment that visually separates the driving cockpit. Each trim level has unique colors, materials, and accents, further differentiating each model with varying hues and textures.
In addition to these new colors and textures, the new Veloster also offers generous rear cargo capacity, with 19.9 cubic feet of interior volume behind the 2nd row seat, more than Mini Cooper, Mini Clubman and VW Beetle.
2.0-LITER NU ENGINE
The Veloster 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine uses the Atkinson-cycle for superior efficiency and lower emissions. The 2.0-liter engine delivers a peak output of 147 horsepower at 6,200 rpm (estimated) and maximum torque of 132 lb.-ft. at 4,500 rpm (estimated). The Nu 2.0-liter also features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, an electronic throttle control, variable induction and innovative anti-friction coatings. The 2.0-liter engine is coupled with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission. Three driver-selectable modes include Normal, Sport, and Smart, according to changing driver preferences.
GAMMA 1.6-LITER TURBOCHARGED ENGINE
The 1.6-liter turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder engine produces 201 horsepower at 6,000 rpm (estimated) and 195 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,500-4,500 rpm (estimated). Turbo models generate 201 horsepower on regular fuel, which represents a best-in-class specific output of 125.6 horsepower per liter. Further, there is an over-boost function that raises peak torque output to 202 lb.-ft. under maximum acceleration. Engine tuning maximizes low- and mid-range torque, for optimum acceleration under daily driving conditions.

2019 Toyota Avalon: Looks weird, but it’s better across the board
It's no secret that I loved the previous generation Toyota Avalon. The new model is objectively better in almost every way. It's more spacious, more comfortable and more pleasing to drive, whether you're looking for comfort from the Limited model or a more engaged Touring model's ride.
Toyota has even overhauled its Entune infotainment and made most of its advanced safety technology standard across the lineup. If you're in the market for a large-mid size sedan, the 2019 Toyota Avalon is an excellent choice.
Subjectively speaking, this new generation debuts an exterior design that's just… well, it's mostly terrible. That new grille is simply too big for the even a car of this size and too aggressive, I think, for the sedan's target audience. The the profile and rear end look alright and the headlamp and taillight designs are interesting. But that front end is a lot to take in.
Fortunately, it looks a hell of a lot better from the inside.
V6 Touring performance
The new Avalon is available with two powertrain options. There's a hybrid model, we'll get back to this momentarily, and the conventional 3.5-liter V6, which will likely make up the bulk of the Avalon's sales volume. The V6 makes 301 horsepower (33 more ponies than the outgoing model) and 267 pound-feet of torque (19 pound-feet more). It's mated to a single-option 8-speed automatic transmission sending power to the front wheels; a setup that's good for an estimated 31 highway mpg, 22 city mpg and 25 mpg combined. (The base XLE model is rated at 32 highway mpg due to its slightly lighter curb weight.)
Passing power is passable. The 2019 Avalon feels like it has the right amount of power for a vehicle of this size -- not enough to overwhelm, but enough to get the job done. Acceleration is good and, more importantly, smooth. The 8-speed automatic and the V6 work well together with imperceptibly smooth shifts and whisper-quiet operation at highway speeds.
Conventional or hybrid, the new Avalon is longer, wider and lower than before, freeing up additional room in the cabin and giving the sedan a more planted stance on the road. Underpinning that stance is is a suspension that varies between the different trim levels. XLE and Limited models do great job of soaking up bumps with a ride that compliments the Avalon's more quiet cabin. XSE and Touring models are more engaging with firmer springs, dampers and suspension bushing that allow just a bit more road feel and slightly more responsive handling.
The Touring model is also available with an optional adaptive suspension that constantly monitors and changes the firmness of the dampers every 20ms. With the touch of a button, it's also able to toggle between compliant and firm presets. With weightier steering and active sound enhancements piping engine noise into the normally quiet cabin (and simulating exhaust sounds with the JBL surround speakers), the Touring model can feel downright sporty in its Sport+ setting on a winding road.
However, even at its most aggressive settings, there's still a very high level of comfort here. This isn't a car that'll rattle your teeth out in the pursuit of a level of performance that its hefty body and the laws of physics can't agree upon. So Toyota's engineers have chosen to offer slightly better feel and better road engagement in the Sport and Sport+ settings, while keeping things nice and comfy. I dig that.
HV hybrid system
Thriftier buyers will want to consider the more fuel efficient Avalon HV models. Featuring the automaker's new hybrid system, the HV starts with Toyota's new 2.5-liter "Dynamic Force" four-cylinder engine making 176 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque and adds a pair of electric motor-generator units and a battery pack. The e-motors can send up to 118 horsepower to the front wheels or capture engine or braking energy to recharge the "Hyper Prime" nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Working together, the electric and gasoline motors make a total of 215 horsepower, because hybrid math is never simple addition. Combined torque has been left unstated.
The hybrid model is slightly heavier than the conventional model and less powerful, so it's no surprise that it feels a bit slower and less responsive. What it lacks in performance, the Avalon HV makes for with significantly improved economy and refinement.

New design language exudes confidence and authority.
A wheelbase that is 1.6 inches longer than its predecessor’s, a 1.1 inches increase in vehicle length, an extra 2.6 inches of width and a 1.0 inches increase in height give the all-new 2019 BMW X5 both a muscular appearance and a more generous level of space for passengers and their luggage. The latest X5 retains the hallmark proportions of an SAV, but the pared-back design language – clean surfacing and precise lines accentuating elegant poise and authority – is new. A sculpted hood a short front overhang, lightly hexagonal wheel arches and the dynamic sweep of the roofline exemplify the sporty yet rugged character of the all-new 2019 BMW X5.
“The BMW X5 embodies the origins of the BMW X family and, in its fourth generation, sends out its most powerful message yet in terms of presence and modernity,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “It defines a new X design language – robust, clear and precise.”
The most striking feature of the front end is the large BMW kidney grille with single-piece surrounds. The all-new BMW X5 comes standard with Adaptive LED headlights, while BMW Laserlights are available as an option and feature blue x-shaped elements, which split up the hexagonal light sources inside the familiar BMW twin headlights, make a distinctive visual statement.
The precise character line in the X5’s flanks, rise up at the rear door, contributing to the modern appearance of the all-new BMW X5. It defines the car’s powerful shoulders and feeds into the rear lights, which extend well into the flanks. At the rear, all lights feature LED technology.
xLine and M Sport model variants, options from BMW Individual.
Distinctive design features differentiate the xLine and M Sport model variants of the all-new BMW X5. The standard xLine model uses exterior cues including kidney grill bars finished in matte aluminum, underbody protection, roof rails and side window surrounds in satin Aluminum, plus other accents in Pearl-effect Chrome, to accentuate the off-road character of the all-new 2019 BMW X5. M Sport specification sees the wheel arch trim, bumper trim, rear underbody protection and side skirts painted in body color and complimented by matte aluminum kidney grille bars, and roof rails and side window surrounds in high-gloss black.
The all-new BMW X5 comes standard with 19-inch light-alloy wheels, the M Sport brings 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in twin-spoke design. Wheels in 21-inch and 22-inch sizes are available as options.
Interior design and controls
Modern and elegant surfacing radiates a feeling of space inside the all-new 2019 BMW X5. The front and rear occupants all enjoy generous accommodation amid an exclusive ambience. The instrument panel is broken up by sweeping horizontal lines, which combine with electroplated trim elements to emphasize the width of the interior. And with its large trim finisher and surrounds likewise made up of electroplated elements, the center console – rising up to the instrument panel – contributes to the handsome overall impression.
The raised seating position, driver-focused cockpit and new design and arrangement of the controls offer the person in the left seat the best possible view to enable him or her to maintain complete command over the task of driving. The fully-digital instrument cluster and the center display are connected visually by consistency of design and share the same graphics. The center console hosts the iDrive Controller, the newly designed transmission selector lever and all other driving-related controls – i.e. the Driving Experience Control switch, the start/stop button and the buttons to activate the air suspension settings and off-road modes (if equipped). A similarly new-look for the heating, air conditioning and lighting functions is on hand.
Carefully selected materials in the interior include a new Vernasca variant for the leather upholstery. Like the optional BMW Individual extended Merino leather trim, it is available in five colors. The all-new BMW X5 is fitted with standard electrically adjustable and heated sports seats. Customers can also specify optional multifunction seats with massage function and seat ventilation for the driver and front passenger.

The new Expander MPV crossover has a somewhat aggressive stance. Thanks to large dimensions and a crossover-ish look, the new Mitsubishi 7-seater MPV exudes dynamism and a rather athletic appeal. The new model measures 4,475 mm in length, 1,750 mm in width and 1,700 mm in height. The new MPV crossover enjoys a really high ground clearance of 205 mm (perfect for Indian roads, we say!). It’s being said that the new Mitsubishi Expander 2018 offers enough interior space to seat 7 in reasonable comfort.
The company goes on to state that its latest MPV offers an amalgam of the ruggedness of an SUV and the practicality of an MPV. In words of the company, the Expander combines “toughness of an SUV with the versatility of an MPV”.While the exterior looks sufficiently SUV-ish, the interior offers three row of seats along with a dual-tone beige-grey colour theme for the cabin. For now, the new model will go on sale with only one engine option – 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine. The engine benefits from MIVEC, which is nothing but variable valve timing technology in Mitsubishi’s speak. Transmission options for this MPV crossover include a Five-speed manual and a Four-speed automatic transmission.
2018 Mitsubishi Expander Engine Specifications
Engine 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol
Forced Induction No
Transmission five-speed Manual, four-speed Automatic
The MPV is currently available with just one engine option – a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine that benefits from MIVEC, the manufacturer’s variable valve timing system. Transmission options include a five-speed Manual and a four-speed Automatic transmission.
When it was my turn to drive, I happened to snag a manual transmission variant. I was a little disappointed, although I'm not sure why. Maybe I didn’t expect too much? But the Xpander won me over right away.
With a Japanese guide/chaperone beside me, I put the shifter into first gear and drove off. It's almost love at first drive! The clutch bit in the friendliest manner, and changing gears was almost heavenly. This wasn't a sports car's transmission; it's a bit more languid than that. I would have described it as enjoyable. This was something I wouldn’t mind using in EDSA traffic. Driving position was also good, and the tiller was nice to hold and handle.
I was apprehensive about the 1.5-liter gasoline powerplant as well, but it turned out my fears were unfounded. With 103hp and 141Nm, there’s enough power here--for two adults at least, one of which has been fed with a steady, unrelenting diet of sushi and convenience store snacks--for me to hit 140kph easily, and bank the Xpander on Mitsubishi's test track oval.
My first meet-and-drive with this anticipated MPV was a success. I was eager to try the Xpander in a more normal setting outside of a test track.
And now that day is here. About a month later I'm with the Top Gear team in Tagaytay shooting the Xpander for this cover shoot. We're lent a silver unit, the middle variant in the lineup. And this time we get an automatic variant.
Being enamored with the manual gearbox, I'm wary, again, of the new transmission--especially since it's the typical four-speed kind. But the Xpander wins me over. I don't know how Mitsubishi tuned this naturally aspirated 1.5-liter mill, but it doesn't feel slow.
Now I have a full crew and the undulating hills of Tagaytay to test the Xpander's power. Even with five of us and camera gear in the MPV, I have no trouble going around the area. There's still power left over to enjoy some spirited maneuvers in the little cul-de-sacs of the property we are shooting in.
The challenge of any mass market model is offering the best value without looking like you cut too much corners. Inside the Xpander there's liberal use of plastics, but this is par for the course in this segment. The infotainment system is a revelation though. Judging by the high-resolution screen of the OEM unit, this is clearly a next-gen product.
The switches and knobs feel solid, and so does the overall build quality. A/C is strong and steady, although admittedly our shoot location doesn't really give it a challenge.
Cabin space is generous. A family of four would be ideal, leaving the third row folded and optimized for cargo. We weren't able to test the third row’s space, but we later did so during its official launch.

Following reports a month ago claiming a replacement for the current 508 Touring was heading to the Paris motor show, the brand issued a teaser via Twitter – asking viewers to #BreakTheCodes to uncover the new model's name.
It appears the new car will be named 508 'SW', or 'Sportswagon', and be pitched as the more practical alternative to the recently-revealed 508 sedan (below).
In the tweet thread that followed the teaser, Twitter user Alexis Hubert (@Al_Hbrt) posted an image of an undisguised station wagon (top) which shows the new wagon's side profile.
From the B-pillar forward the 508 SW looks pretty identical to the sedan, while at the back the extended roofline drops into a fastback-style tailgate that looks a bit like the Ferrari GTC4 Lusso.
It also looks like the rear will have a similar lip spoiler and tail-light arrangement to the sedan, though with the wagon booty stuck on top.
Expect the engine range to mirror that of its sedan equivalent, meaning a line-up of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines displacing up to 2.0-litres.
Headlining the sedan range are a 168kW 1.6-litre turbo petrol and a 134kW 2.0-litre turbo-diesel, both mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
We're guessing the 508 SW will be officially revealed very soon, ahead of a European launch later this year or early next. Given Peugeot's local arm hasn't confirmed a launch date yet, it could be a year or more before we see the wagon here.

Expressive design with new Singleframe and features from the original Audi quattro
Generous, elegant interior, touch operating concept and high-tech navigation
All-wheel steering and quattro drive for agile handling and best traction
The Audi Q8 combines the elegance of a four-door luxury coupé with the practical versatility of a large SUV.
Versatile, sporty, elegant: the dimensional and space concept
The Audi Q8 exudes sporty dynamics and upscale prestige like no other SUV from the brand with the four rings. 4.99 meters (16.4 ft) long, 2.00 meters (6.6 ft) wide and 1.71 meters (5.6 ft) tall, the SUV coupe is wider, shorter and lower than its Q7 sister model. With a wheelbase of nearly 3.00 meters (9.8 ft), it offers a spacious interior that beats of its direct competitors in most relevant dimensions, including interior length and headroom. There is a three-seat system in the rear with longitudinally adjusting upon request. With the seatbacks folded down, the luggage compartment under the power rear hatch holds up to 1,755 liters (62.0 cu ft).
---New presence for the Q family: the exterior design
With the imposing Singleframe in octagonal design, the Audi Q8 is the new face of the Q family. The brawny radiator grille stands upright and, together with the spoiler that has been drawn toward the front and the large, highly contoured air inlets, emphasizes the self-confident look. The elegantly sloping roofline terminates in gently inclined D-pillars and rests against the quattro blisters above the wheel arches, which house up to 22-inch wheels. Numerous details hint at the design of the original quattro. Strong contours and athletically tight surfaces convey a feeling of power, sophistication and the special dynamics of the permanent all-wheel drive. The spoiler, wheel arch trims, door trim strips and diffuser are in a contrasting color, to further emphasize the off-road look.
Standard LED headlights illuminate the road, with HD Matrix LED technology available as an option. Here both the three-dimensional signature of the daytime running lights and the taillights have a digital character. A light strip connects the units at the rear. As in the original Audi quattro, a black surface underlays this strip. Q8 owners can use the myAudi app on their smartphone to activate various lighting functions and experience them from the outside.
--Sporty driving experience: suspension and drive
Audi is quattro and quattro is Audi – of course this applies in particular to the Q8, the top SUV of the brand. The purely mechanical center differential transfers the forces to the front axle and rear axle at a ratio of 40:60 as standard. When required, it transfers the majority to the axle with the better traction. That plus as much 254 millimeters (10.0 in) of ground clearance, short overhangs and hill descent control means the Audi Q8 can keep going even after the pavement ends. The suspension with damper control is standard. Audi offers the adaptive air suspension with controlled damping as an option, with either comfort or sport setup. It adjusts the ride height depending on the driving situation and the driver’s preference by as much as 90 millimeters (3.5 in).
Besides the standard progressive steering, whose steering ratio becomes increasingly direct the further the steering wheel is turned, Audi also offers the option of all-wheel steering. It can turn the rear wheels as much as 5 degrees – counter to the direction of the turn at low speeds to increase agility and at higher speeds in the direction of the turn for better stability.
All drive systems are particularly efficient thanks to the new mild hybrid technology (MHEV). The 48-volt primary electrical system incorporates two important technology modules: a lithium-ion battery and a belt alternator starter. During braking, it can recover up to 12 kW of power and feed it back into the battery. The MHEV technology enables long coasting phases with the engine deactivated and a start-stop range that begins at 22 km/h (13.7 mph).
Clarity is the new premium: the interior
Easy-to-understand symbols stand for the digital precision from Audi and for the high level of integration of architecture and operation. The central element is the top MMI touch response display. With its black-panel look, it almost dissolves into a large, black surface when switched off. All elements refer logically to one another, from the flat air vent strip to the wide console on the center tunnel bearing the tiptronic selector lever. In the dark, the optional contour light traces the distinctive design lines of the interior and provides backlight for the three-dimensionally lasered quattro badge above the glove compartment – an example for the love of detail at Audi.

Bright and dazzle-free: Font and rear LED lights now standard. First-in-class adaptive LED headlights with Matrix high beam optionally available.
The exterior character of the new MINI range has been refreshed with the introduction of a new front and rear LED light design, enhancing the on-road presence of the new MINI 3-Door Hatch, MINI 5-Door Hatch and MINI Convertible.
All versions of MINI Hatch and MINI Convertible sold in the UK get the same front and rear LED lamps as standard, for the first time in this segment. The LED lamps have a stronger, brighter beam pattern than the outgoing halogen headlamps, while the daytime running lamps and indicators are also LED-based, forming a new ring design around the headlights themselves. The three-dimensional LED rear lamps cleverly incorporate horizontal turn signals and vertical brake lamps within a distinctive new light cluster. The LED lamps benefit from greater long-distance visibility, without dazzling other road users.
First-in-class new ‘Matrix’ adaptive LED headlamps will be offered as an option on the new MINI Hatch and Convertible range, which automatically adjusts brightness using a matrix of different light elements to cater for specific road conditions.
For example, the lamps can offer additional illumination to the side of the road in both urban and rural areas, while the high beam lights have greater intensity at motorway speeds, without dazzling oncoming drivers.
The adaptive LEDs also feature an automatic selective dip function when on high beam, which automatically extinguishes the parts of the lamp which may dazzle other drivers, while at the same time offering optimal illumination.
Each lamp is divided into four horizontally arranged segments, which are activated and deactivated independently of one another at speeds of over 45mph. The high beam segments effectively ‘read’ the road, and as soon as the MINI front camera registers an oncoming vehicle or a vehicle driving ahead, the space that vehicle occupies is only illuminated at low beam brightness.

Fox Live Valve shocks go along with a Trail Control feature and new Recaro seats.
There's never been any disputing that the Ford F-150 Raptor is a capable beast off-road, but the 2019 one will be a little easier to live with on-road, too. Thanks to the addition of electronically adaptive Fox Racing Shox Live Valve suspension, this year's Raptor will deliver, "a greater level of driving refinement on-road," says program manager Tony Greco.
The suspension is fundamentally similar to the Fox Racing shock absorbers that were already employed by the Raptor, but now with a solenoid that allows the truck's computer to constantly adjust the damping force at each corner. New ride-height sensors at each front wheel feed information about the terrain to that computer. Ford's in-house algorithms are designed to improve ride and handling, whether you're driving the Raptor in Normal, Sport or Off-Road modes.
For instance, for road driving, the suspension stiffens more as your speed increases, and when cornering the outside dampers will stiffen to reduce body roll. In the off-road mode, the suspension damping will generally be much softer, for compliance and handling.
The coolest news of all? The software has a special Jump mode that detects when the front tires are off the ground and stiffens the shocks pro-actively, preventing bottoming out the truck when you land. A Loud Pedal mode also detects when you're driving aggressively (i.e. with a lot of throttle input) and makes the damping changes more extreme.
This is the first truck-specific application of the Live Valve technology, though the system is already offered in the UTV market. Weight gain from adding the new shock absorbers and associated electronics is "not much," says engineer Chris Paiva. No suspension components (springs, bushings, control arms) were changed.
The new shocks also don't change any of the Raptor's impressive off-road statistics; it still has 13.0 inches of front and 13.9 inches of rear suspension travel and a 30-degree approach angle.
To make all that off-road work easier, the Raptor now has Trail Control that replaces (and uses the same button location as) the prior hill-descent control. It allows the driver to pick a set speed between 1 and 20 miles per hour with the cruise-control buttons. It works in any driving mode, even two-wheel drive if you're a glutton for punishment. The truck will automatically accelerate or brake to keep that speed over any terrain, letting drivers focus more on picking a path through tough terrain.
"The goal is to really allow you to set the wheels where they need to be through steering," says Ford Performance engineer Ed Krenz.
Other changes to the 2019 Raptor concern the way it looks. The cool Ford Performance Blue paint shown off on the Raptor at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show is now available for purchase. The design of the regular and the beadlock wheels is new and the tailgate applique is redesigned.
Inside, bolstered Recaro seats are offered for the first time to help keep occupants in place during enthusiastic driving. They have a blue insert called Light Speed, inspired by the eponymous color in the Ford GT, and are matched to carbon fiber trim for the upper door cards, shifter and dashboard.
The twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine has been unchanged and still delivers 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. The 10-speed automatic's software has been retuned, however, to reduce shift harshness.
Ford doesn't break out sales of the Raptor from the F-Series truck line as a whole, but says so far this year Raptor sales are up compared to the start of 2017. The 2019 Ford F-150 Raptor goes on sale toward the end of this year. No pricing has been announced, but it's safe to figure there will be a mild increase over the current entry point of $51,510, with destination.

The 911 GT2 RS may be the top of the 911 pecking order but Porsche hasn't forgotten about the equally drool-worthy 911 GT3 RS.
The German firm has developed a few tweaks for its naturally aspirated track star, and now the updated car has been revealed at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show. The car is due in showrooms in the fall, as a 2019 model.
There are tweaks to the styling, inside and out, and yes, there's more power to be had from the familiar 4.0-liter atmo flat-6.
Starting with the exterior, aerodynamics and lightweight construction have played the lead role in the design. This is a Porsche GT model, after all. The most noticeable change is the more aggressive front fascia matching the one on the recently updated 911 GT3, which itself borrows the design from Porsche's latest 911 GT3 Cup race car.
Additionally, the hood and front fenders are made of carbon fiber and the roof consists of magnesium. Like on the 2018 911 GT2 RS, NACA ducts in the hood optimize brake cooling without increasing drag. The front fascia features a spoiler lip that is larger than on the previous model, increasing downforce in conjunction with the larger side skirts. At the rear, the large wing mounted on the carbon fiber deck lid works in combination with a rear underbody diffuser. The result is more than twice the downforce of the regular GT3 on which the car is based.
As mentioned, a 4.0-liter flat-6 remains, though the horsepower has been bumped up by 20 horses to a new total of 520 hp and torque up 8 pound-feet to 346. This was achieved via an increase in revs to a maximum 9,000 rpm, and sees the GT3 RS hit 60 mph in 3.0 seconds, or 0.1 of a second quicker than before. Drive is still to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Porsche won't add a manual transmission to its updated GT3 RS like it did with the regular GT3, though we're sure these guys will.
The rear-wheel-steering system has been sharpened and a new set of forged wheels measuring 20 inches up front and 21 inches in the rear have been fitted. These wheels are shod with 265/35 and 325/30 tires, respectively. Furthermore, the updated GT3 RS's suspension features new helper springs at the front axle, in addition to the rear. These work in conjunction with a set of standard active dampers.
And weight has been reduced thanks to the addition of a lighter engine cover, new carbon fiber shells for the seats, and reduced sound-deadening material. Further weight can be shed by adding an available Weissach Package, as well as choosing magnesium wheels (only available with Weissach Package) over the standard forged set and carbon-ceramic brake discs over the standard cast iron set. When equipped with these options, the curb weight of the car drops to 3,153 pounds.
Pricing for the 2019 GT3 RS will start at $188,550, including destination. The Weissach Package will set you back an additional $18,000, and if you also want the magnesium wheels you're going to have to add an additional $13,000. Porsche options, you know.

Lincoln's new Navigator is so plush, you'll almost forget it's a truck
Highs
Well-appointed interior
Powerful engine
Comfortable seating in all three rows
Lows
Truck-like ride
Disappointing fuel economy
Interior and tech
If you’re a spy, you shouldn’t drive a Navigator. It’s hard to be subtle in a vehicle this big, and Lincoln doubled down with bold styling that’s well executed and handsome (although we would have loved to see Lincoln go all the way and include the gullwing doors from 2016’s Navigator concept). Approach the Navigator with key fob in hand, and the headlights and Lincoln logo in the grille light up. At night, the Lincoln logo is projected onto the ground, a cute touch that’s the perfect invitation to step inside.
As with previous generations, the 2018 Navigator is based on the Ford Expedition, but you wouldn’t know that from looking at the interior. What seem like yards of wood, tastefully applied chrome, and soft leather combine to make this more than just a gussied-up Ford cabin.
A 10.0-inch touchscreen stands proud of the dashboard, paired with a 12.0-inch reconfigurable instrument cluster and, in our test vehicle, a head-up display. The Navigator also sports six USB ports, four 12-volt power outlets, and a 110-volt plug, with an optional wireless phone-charging pad. In addition to power, the Lincoln has plenty of Wi-Fi to go around, boasting a hotspot that can support up to 10 devices. The rival Cadillac Escalade also offers Wi-Fi, but “only” for seven devices.
Like most other Lincoln and Ford models, the Navigator uses the Sync 3 infotainment system, in this case with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The central touchscreen was very responsive and entering commands, whether by tapping on the screen or by voice, was fairly straightforward. Still, we felt additional analog controls would have been helpful, and the graphics on the central screen are basically the same as what you get on a Ford Escape. At least Lincoln did its own thing with the 12.0-inch screen that serves as the driver’s instrument cluster. That display featured cool-looking graphics that were also easy to read at a glance.
The Navigator has an advantage over the Escalade, in most measures of passenger space (although Cadillac does offer slightly more first-row head and legroom), with most other big luxury SUVs coming in behind the two Americans. Remarkably for any vehicle with three rows of seats, the Navigator’s rearmost row is actually fairly comfortable for adults. The 20-speaker Revel Ultima audio system produced good sound across all three rows as well, so the third row really isn’t much of a penalty box at all. Keeping the third row up drastically reduces cargo space, but that’s always the case with three-row vehicles.
You’d expect a vehicle as big as the Navigator to offer plenty of interior space, but what raises the bar to a luxury level (for the front occupants at least) is Lincoln’s “Perfect Position” seats. The front seats are 30-way adjustable (they also offer heating, ventilation, and massage), and we found it easy to get everything dialed in exactly right. The result was a comfortable ride without the feeling of sinking into an overly soft couch, as is the case with some luxury-car seats.
In the case the driver gets distracted by the built-in massager, the Navigator is available with adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist. It also gets a 360-degree camera system (which really comes in handy when parking this beast), park assist, and the Trailer Backup Assist system also offered in the Ford Expedition and F-150 pickup truck, which automatically steers when backing up with a trailer.
Driving experience
Most automakers offer different driving modes, but Lincoln tried something different with the Navigator. Where other cars might get an Eco or Sport mode, you get Excite and Conserve in this Lincoln. Neither word really describes the driving experience, though.
The Navigator uses the same 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 and 10-speed automatic transmission as the Ford F-150 Raptor. The V6 produces the same 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque as it does in the Raptor, and is coupled to the same 10-speed automatic transmission. The Cadillac Escalade uses the same 10-speed auto, but its 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 can only muster 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. The Lincoln V6 also boasts more horsepower than the V8 engines in the Infiniti QX80 and Mercedes-Benz GLS550, and more torque than the Infiniti (The Merc has 516 lb-ft).

First all-wheel-drive BMW M5
592bhp, 0-62mph in 3.4sec
£89,640 in the UK
It had to happen eventually, didn’t it? Since the first BMW M5 in 1984, the ultimate 5-series has always been resolutely rear-wheel-drive, but as the super-saloon power war eases past 600bhp, the new, sixth-generation 2018 BMW M5 has gone all-wheel-drive on us.
You can only defy physics for so long, after all. The 2018 M5’s most natural rival, AMG’s 603bhp E63, also now drives all four wheels as standard.
BMW says the G30 M5 is more a 2WD+2 than a 4WD car – it’s still very much rear-biased, but in theory should be less scary in the rain or on frosty winter mornings. And the 2018 M5 even has the option to switch to a fully rear-drive mode. Does that make it the best of both worlds? Let’s find out in our detailed new 2018 BMW M5 review.
Sixth-generation M5: the specs
Based on the latest G30 generation 5-series, the new 2018 M5 is lighter than the car it replaces, thanks to plenty of aluminium in its construction, and some composite components. At 1855kg the new M5 still a pretty weighty beast, though, albeit a smidge lighter than the AMG E63.
The roof is made of carbonfibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), with the dual benefit of lowering the centre of gravity and increasing torsional rigidity, along with the less prosaic bonus of looking kinda racy when specced in a lacquered bare weave finish.
There’s an entirely different front apron compared with the regular 5-series, with giant apertures to gulp in as much fresh air as possible for the engine, charge cooling, transmission and brakes
Despite all that fresh air in its face, the new BMW M5 is really quite a subtle, understated car, and from a distance you could mistake it for a 540i M Sport. You’ll probably find yourself in one of two camps – a fan of its under-the-radar, sleeper disguise, or wishing it was a bit more wild-looking – I find myself torn between the two.
It’s quite a lot of cash, this car – nearly £90k, before options – but it’s also a lot of car, both in terms of dimensions and performance. The all-wheel drive helps the new M5 crack 0-62mph in 3.4sec, and 0-124mph in 11.1sec, making it the fastest-accelerating iteration yet. Whip the 155mph top speed limiter off as part of the optional M Driver’s package and it can hit 190mph.
What engine does the new 2018 M5 have?
It’s a development of the previous car’s twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8, using the most powerful version used in the 30 Jahre edition as its starting point.
Max power is 592bhp (or a nice round 600 metric horsepower), and max torque is a frankly brutal 553lb ft from 1800rpm.
While the previous car used a dual-clutch transmission (DCT) the new M5 has an eight-speed ‘M Steptronic’ conventional torque converter auto gearbox, with manual shifts possible with the wheel-mounted shift paddles or by push-pulling the selector lever, touring car-style.
Why no DCT gearbox?
The new eight-speed auto is said to be a better fit with the all-wheel-drive system, while offering similar shift times to the DCT ’box.
It’s also smoother at going into reverse – some previous-gen M5 owners have complained of a less-than-smooth engagement of reverse gear with the DCT.
Having eight speeds rather than seven is also better for fuel economy. Provisional combined figure is 26.9mpg, so the M5 is still pretty thirsty.
How does the new M5’s all-wheel drive system work?
Branded ‘xDrive,’ BMW’s name for its AWD systems across the board, the M5’s set-up is made possible by a single ECU that controls both differentials along with the stability control, ABS and various other vehicle dynamics systems. The central computer is extremely quick at processing information – this type of system wouldn’t have been possible a few years ago.
A transfer case constantly controls the torque split front to rear, and an electronic Active M differential splits drive between the rear wheels.
It’s possible to put the car into a purely rear-wheel-drive mode, too. The Mercedes-AMG E63 has something similar, billed as ‘Drift Mode.’ Even in four-wheel-drive mode, it’s predominantly rear-biased and it’s probably best to think of the M5 more as a rear-drive car with on-demand front axle help when required.
In gentle driving, it’s in 2WD mode most of the time to save fuel, bringing the front wheels into play when required. It does so commendably imperceptibly.
‘xDrive is compatible with our values,’ reckons M Division president, and former Audi man, Frank van Meel. ‘[The new M5 has] the vehicle dynamics and agility of a rear-wheel-drive sports car, just with a little extra traction.’

With styling tweaks, upmarket interiors and additional power, Mahindra has upped the premium quotient of the XUV500.
What is it?
The game-changing Mahindra XUV500 was launched seven years ago and it took the market by storm because of the sheer value it brought to the table. Also, falling under a price segment populated with sedans worked in the SUV’s favour. The XUV500 has gone through many changes over the years, and, finally, it’s in this 2018 avatar that its premium appeal has gone up a few notches. The exteriors get some styling tweaks, interiors have been given an upmarket treatment and the engine gets a performance boost; all of this to keep the XUV500 fresh and competitive.
Between the 2015 facelift and this update, exterior changes are minor yet distinctive. The most prominent change is in the front grille, which gets chrome-studded and surrounded with gloss black sides and thick chrome. While the headlamps retain their basic shape, and also the projectors for low beam, the elements inside are different. The new LED DRL strip sitting atop the headlamps looks like an after-market addition, and the chrome in the fog lamp housing has been reshaped; the rest of the bumper remains unchanged. New, smart dual-tone 18-inch alloy wheels feature on the top W11 (O) variant and these fill the wheel wells very nicely. There’s even a chrome strip on the doors and new roof rails, but these are far too subtle and can be easily missed. With this facelift, it’s the rear that’s received the biggest change. It’s got a redefined tailgate, new tail-lamps and a new roof spoiler, all of which gives the XUV500 a more tame, MPV-like appearance.
What is it like inside?
The interiors of the W11 (O) variant are all black with quilted tan-leather seat upholstery, which look very upmarket. While the seats look very nice, their fitting is shoddy and feel like an after-market fitment. It is also not very comfy to sit on as you can feel the three vertical foam strips (shaped below the quilting) against your back, quite distinctly. The centre console gets a new piano-black finish with brushed-silver highlights. Plastics on the dash and door sills now have a nice, soft feel to them, and there are faux-leather inserts with contrasting stitching on the dashboard top.
What’s nice is that the XUV500 is still well-equipped and comes with kit such as a sunroof, auto headlamps and wipers, touchscreen with navigation, Android Auto, reversing camera, six airbags and ESP. But, this time around, the audio experience is tweaked by Arkamys and the location of the tweeters has been changed. With the BlueSense app, users can sync the infotainment to an Android or Apple smartwatch, which allows them to control the audio, climate control and view information like tyre pressure. Given the screen size of a watch, this function seems more party trick than useful.
What’s it like to drive?
The XUV500 never lacked in terms of performance, but Mahindra has given the latest iteration a bump in power. The 2.2-litre diesel engine now makes 155hp and 360Nm of torque – an increase of 15hp and 30Nm over the previous version. The variable geometry turbocharger is now electronically controlled, whereas the earlier one was vacuum controlled. The engine’s response low down the rev range has improved a bit, and boost comes in gently at around 1,400rpm and builds nicely from 1,800rpm. This engine pulls very strongly until 4,000rpm, beyond which progress is slow. Mated to the engine is the six-speed manual gearbox, which, like before, is notchy with long throws and transmits power to the front wheels.
What’s nice is that, since the 2015 update, the XUV500 puts the power down to the front wheels much better now, and despite the increase in power, this 2018 facelift doesn’t pull hither and thither under hard acceleration in lower gears.
There’s also a six-speed automatic transmission on offer that can either drive the front wheels or all four wheels, and the initial response of this gearbox seems to have improved slightly.
There haven’t been any noticeable changes to the suspension and it still rides like before, despite the large 18-inch wheels. It’s a bit crashy over sharp bumps, but the 235/60 profile tyres smothers smaller imperfections. Body roll is well-controlled too.
Should I buy one?
With this facelift, Mahindra has added a good dose of freshness to the XUV500. The new W11 (O) MT variant is around Rs 4,000 cheaper than the previous W10 FWD MT variant; so Mahindra has really upped its value game by offering more for less. However, at Rs 19.05 lakh, the range-topping W11 (O) AWD automatic is just too expensive.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross all-new compact SUV coupe will join MMC's global lineup of crossover SUVs: the ASX compact SUV and the Outlander and Outlander PHEV mid-size SUVs.
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is a fusion of sharp coupe looks and dynamic SUV mobility with signature Mitsubishi styling and performance.
Other distinguishing features are its design that motivates the driver to get out and go, connectivity that inspires new fun adventures, and all-wheel control technology which delivers an enjoyable, reassuring feel that elevates the driving experience.
--Characteristic Dynamic Design
The distinctly sharp and dynamic Mitsubishi SUV coupe form is distinguished by: its wedge profile with distinctive beltline and strong character line; a forward raked rear window; the sharply cut off rear gate and short overhang; and beefy fenders projecting the image of a powerful athlete.
MMC's DYNAMIC SHIELD front design concept refers to the protective shield shape visually formed by the black central area represented by a black radiator grille that symbolizes the performance of the car. The black area is embraced from three directions - from the left, right, and bottom. DYNAMIC SHIELD emphasizes the front end's functionalities aimed at protecting both people and the car itself.
The "Dynamic and Characteristic" rear design is distinguished by the almost cubist styling created around the high-mounted, stretched rear lamps and by how it horizontally divides the forward-rake rear window into two. When illuminated, the tubular LED brake lights and the central LED hi-mount stop light form a single bar of light running across the tail, giving Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross a broad and stable appearance from the rear.
A new red body color joins the palette. The standard coating is layered with semi-transparent red and clear coating, and this creates a high color saturation and intensity that produces a highly-refined finish.
The horizontal dashboard, silver metal frames and black/silver monotone color scheme create a refined interior that is both dynamic and sporty. With its thin display audio and the Head Up Display, the futuristic cockpit inspires a sense of excitement for the driver in the vehicle.
Maximizing luggage space utility without spoiling its stylish coupe-SUV shape, the rear seat uses a 60:40 split with long slide-and-recline adjustment. In addition to providing rear occupants with plenty of legroom, this also allows them to settle on their favorite seating posture and enjoy long trips with ample headroom despite a roof that slopes down toward the rear.
--Enjoyable and stable driving with all-wheel control technology
Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross uses an electronically-controlled 4WD system that feeds the optimum amount of torque to the rear wheels as required by the driving situation and surface conditions. MMC's Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) integrated vehicle dynamics control system incorporates brake-activated AYC.
The addition of a 3-point strut tower brace at the front and the strategic use of structural bonding at the rear in particular have increased body rigidity. The tougher body and detail optimization of the suspension offer precise handling and superior vehicle stability.
Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross offers two powertrains that do full justice to a stylish SUV coupe in delivering the right balance of power and environmental performance. The new 1.5L direct-injection turbocharged gasoline engine is mated to a new CVT with 8-speed Sport Mode manual override. The 2.2L common rail direct-injection turbocharged diesel engine modified specifically for Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Both powertrain combinations offer the driver brisk driving experience.
