Darkness Weaves
In realms beyond the Light,
Past the blackest pit of Absolution,
The Dark Ones gather in madness,
And between Them, Darkness weaves.
No shade of sin can be so many hued,
As the Darkness of the Deep,
Forever shrouded in shifting lightless space,
Beyond the places where Darkness weaves.
There are no features, there are no facades of order,
All is the same and not,
An Orbis for the Blind Seeker,
Who journeys where Darkness weaves.
All along the path in colourless envy they stride,
All arrayed in multi-hued costumes,
Spun by the churning of the Mad God,
Who with Darkness weaves….
– the mad poet horstung
– inspired by and adapted from a poem and the fantastic story of the same name by Karl Edward Wagner
Recorded and produced at Mindspawn/Cross Street Studio, Winchester, MA USA, January 2000. Analog instruments and digital recording equipment were utilized during the recording process. Alien and demonic sounds contributed by various aliens and demons.
Remastered at Mindspawn Mastering, Vallejo, CA USA, December 2021 by Gene Williams. In the remastering process some artifacts from the original recording process were noted. In finalizing the remasters I chose to leave everything as close to the original recordings as possible. This is very much a record of a moment in my artistic arc and I chose to keep that moment intact.

Nekropolis - a requiem for the damned.
One, the Watcher of the Obelisk,
Mistress of the crowns, Horizon of Heaven;
Thy name is wrath, Great Wielder of Magic,
Goddess of Pestilence, Goddess of Wars.
Progeny of the Midian, Queen of the Wastelands,
Lust, Life, and the Drinker of Blood;
At the prow she guides the Boat of Millions of Years,
Passing in regal splendor,
The procession of dust, where thy fires glow.
Queen of the Dead, the Damned,
Lies in the darkness of Naos Tis Kdke.
Mother that lies in the Deep,
Neath the bones of Nekropolis,
Consumed by the churning,
Of Obeliscus Damnatorum.

Obeliscus Damnatorum - The petitioners lay open their bodies, the blood pouring into the slowly turning blackened stone that hovers in the air before the basalt throne of the goddess-being, pulled from their flesh like sanguine water to course in veins upon the surface of the Obelisk. And she who sits upon the throne covered in ancient symbols of death, life, healing and destruction opens her eyes. Rays of black fire pour from her lips in a melody that changes all who still hear. She speaks into their souls the music of immortality and the canticle of the damned.

Naos Tis Kdke - Deep into the heart of the temple, the heart of Nekropolois, they descend to stand before the great Obelisk and the goddess that has created this place from the dust of the dead and the blood of the damned. Those that know the rites then prostrate themselves before she who is without mercy, the drinker of blood, the Queen of the Damned, to either be consumed by her hunger and join the throngs of the dead, or be granted a taste of the dark energy that flows from Sekhmet through the dark Obelisk and become the holy half-dead, the damned, the coterie of Nekropolis.

Moribund Cortege - Through its dark streets of rot and decay, the path through the dead, the procession of they who would be damned march to bring tribute at the temple of Kdke. The chosen ascend the stairs of the temple and descend into the darkness beyond, guided by instinct and ancient foci, speaking words uttered through the tongues of the dead.

Midian, Civitas Mortuorum - Thus begins the rituals of the damned, opening a portal between this world and fabled Midian. An ancient portal to Nekropolis, Midian calls to all who are children of the Underworld. Whispers and echos of emptiness reverberate richly through the labyrinth of this place. Those with open minds learn from the dwellers of Midian words that guide and protect on the journey into oblivion. They teach the ways of change and transmutation.

The Arrival - from the EP "Self Portrait - Mirror Image"
Rhythmic experiments and ambient wanderings....
The arrival at your destination, at the end of the journey, at the moment of revelation or the transformation through death. This is the place, the decaying boneyard where lifetimes lay strewn like pages from a book, the overgrown asphalt that was once a suburban street, the accomplishments and failures jumbled together in congealing pools of memory, the mirror where you see just where you are.

Trimountaine Metro - from the EP "Self Portrait - Mirror Image"
Rhythmic experiments and ambient wanderings....
The Trimountaine Metro lies at the heart of every decaying city, commuters disembarking for Metropolis, Ktonor, and the places described by the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, illuminated in the poem, Ozymandias -
I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

Bandcamp: mindspawn.bandcamp.com/album/the-long-night
“Mindspawn basks in the long night... A journey deep into the expansive cosmos of the soul, the mind, the essence. The Long Night is a themed collection of tracks that explores the mysteries of the dark, the long night, the Yin, and places as yet unimagined.
It comes every solar cycle, when the cacophony of autumn fades to a dull din and the gray eats at your psyche like a ravenous wolf, tearing small bits from what you think you are, the fading light disappearing through the spaces of its blood covered teeth. The call, the summons, the need to delve into the Yin, embrace the dark and be consumed by it. A time to listen to the dwellers of the deep, those things that wear darkness like a comforting scent. Their speech takes me awhile to adjust to, you have to hear it without listening, the words pouring like a song from a rusty pail swirling with possibility.
So I push aside the heavy door to the other place, the Underworld, Diyu, Náströnd, Naraka, the Outer darkness, Mictlan, Duat, Erebus, so many names across so much time....”

Is there a parasitic mind living inside the host of humanity? From the primordial swamp to the hidden vault of knowledge, the journey is not linear, but punctuated with false starts, diversions, and delusions... all leading to one of many resolutions.... the wriggling in your mind. Which you are you....?

Daemon - a being whose nature is intermediate between that of a god and that of a human being, a being from a thought experiment, a background process, one that has exceptional enthusiasm, drive, or effectiveness, an attendant power or spirit... This album explores all these concepts and relates a story, a journey, of one particular Daemon.
Each track is a meditation, a sound representation, on an aspect of the Daemon's existence. From The Gate, the journey beings, eventually ending at the Glisten Well, where final reflections posit, is this just math and vibrations moving through the air, or is it a thing not quite human, not quite a god... or just a thought experiment?

The collected fragments from the writings behind the album Daemon.
Daemon - a being whose nature is intermediate between that of a god and that of a human being, a being from a thought experiment, a background process, one that has exceptional enthusiasm, drive, or effectiveness, an attendant power or spirit...
Past the Sequoia forest, where the Behemoth scarred the earth, the Moaning Machine pours out Dark Matter into the Soul Marshes dancing among the courtiers of the Fungus Lord. The witness at the entrance to the energy dark.
Clustering vesicles careen down the mysterias, their Golaith placing hammer to gong, and the sleepless fears of the dawn of machines brood in the vats of whistling jawbones and peeled skins of distant drums.
Distant suns rumble through soundless space and yet I hear their screams as if they bear the children of the damned. Among the throngs of cacophony the solitude of silence bleeds a torrent of mis-measured voltage, and the nothing is controlled within its crashing currents to lie torn on the rocks of remembrance.
Their language was at once foreign and unmistakably familiar... Their tones reaching deep inside my head, distorting across frequencies that were beyond my fragile flesh to receive in the raw... They spoke of the depths of deepening “soul” relating to my frail mind as best they could while their wisdom drove me to my knees again and again.

The Message, The Geshetica
The place is like an organic womb, warm, sheltered, dark, the walls dripping with substance that is like reading an ancient text, visible yet obscure. Initially, there is almost no light, and even with the optically enhanced remote viewer I barely make out any significant features aside from the dripping substance that seems to be present.
I say seems to be because at one moment the datastream from my instruments seems to indicate a plethora of information and the next it is entirely void of any information, almost as if the sensors were not just off, but non-existant…. even in the off state the sensors should record no information, and that is information in itself. This is the utter lack of anything, even the negative of anything isn’t registering… sometimes. It is vacillating between the states of a highly unusual amount of data and what I can only describe as the inverse of that. Highly unusual.
I suspect that the sensors need tuning and I send calibration packets downstream to the instruments. Finally, after seeming aeons of time, I am now getting consistent, if not reliable, data.
The colors surprise me, rich vivid cataracts cover this void that I can now see is much larger than my data initially suggested. A lot larger… It’s almost like the entire area suddenly expanded exponentially. Actually it is… Expanding… Rapidly. The dousing probes can’t possibly be reading it correctly, but the visual data seems to agree. The probes glide into the void across a surface that shimmers like heavy dust blown by a feral wind. The shimmering twists and billows as if it has sentience, curious sentience.
There is a kind of sound that the probes are detecting, not real sound, as the void is a vacuum, but sound-like. What my instruments are decoding is something akin to… music…?
I need to do a full diagnostic. What I’ve been interpreting as data is in all likelihood just a malfunction or a series of malfunctions. A cascading error set that is rapidly eroding the banks of the datastream like a flash flood. Logic quickly crumbles when unobserved errors change the data collection, interpretation, or both.
The calibration I thought I just ran is reporting it won’t run. It hasn’t even started. The probes are still indicating the void is rapidly expanding, and the music, well it sounds more and more like some abstract music created by a mad composer being fed into a ravenous recycler. Not quite noise, as I’m discerning a vague pattern, and it is oddly cloying, like the scent of death… initially attractive and then quickly repulsive.
The digital augments that decode data beyond my usual purview are hammering against my enraptured consciousness. There is a message here. There is a message, hear.
My species is far more adept in the visible spectrum than compared to the audio spectrum, more so when there shouldn’t be any audio spectrum in the first place. As the image starts to coalesce my lagging auditory decoding is finally making sense.
I do not recognize this word, geshetica…. I have no reference to such a word in over a hundred million languages…. but I understand it.
Welcome… and now I am no more….

THE COMING DECAY…. BECOMING….
I looked at this, a refuse heap in an outbuilding of the old mining facility, and I saw so many things… On the surface it was old rotting bits of tarp, clothing and bedding. As the eye adjusted to the low level of light, bits of animal hide, maybe dog, rat, coyote, maybe something else, came into focus. There were bits of bones, teeth, feathers and other rotting debris covered in thick dust. Taken as a whole it looked more like a single being that was long into a mummified state of decay. There were shapes that hinted at features that weren’t really there, or maybe they were and the fragility of my human mind preferred to keep me safe with mundane explanations of the odd forms I beheld.
I could feel the desolation, the abandonment of this place, these things. Yet, here I stood, caught by these shapes of decay, the scent of dust and musty rot heavy in my nostrils. There are some pangs hidden deep inside, in a place I think we all try to keep from ourselves, that one day I will be like this… unrecognizable as what I once was, mouldering in my existence, unable to stop the degeneration that comes, in one way or another, to us all. If I take a moment, I already know this to be true, and my thought and eye turns briefly toward the Sun, sometimes my nemesis but generally necessary for my continued existence, and I ruminate that once I was there, churning in fires hotter than any hell ever imagined, roaring with a life I can barely comprehend now… There I once was, and now I am here, a degenerate human, spawned and grown to what I am on this chunk of detritus, spun off by the Sun that no longer needed either of us…. And in my degeneration, in my fall from the graces of the burning fires of the mother star, I have come to be this, aware, and fantastic, full of ideas, questions, and possibilities. Full of possibilities.
And so as I decay, so I become, different, yes, but ever changing, becoming beauty and horror, life and death, before and after, awash in the possibilities of being, even in decay… I wonder if the Sun misses us, or perhaps the Sun thinks no more of us than we do of defecation, and perhaps to think of the Sun as thinking in any way that our small minds might comprehend is the ultimate folly of this decaying mind. I shall let my thoughts moulder elsewhere for now…..

Erotomechaniks "... music to die to, 2."
Coph Nia and Mindspawn return for a new sojourn of biomechanoid soundscapes to travel the apocalyptic wastes. More aural sorcery conjures visions of Birth Chambers, the Turquoise Stairs, the Turbine Halls, and stirs She Who Waits Below....
Like Erotomechanicks, Erotomechaniks II draws on the inspiration of artists like Moebius, Ian Miller and Geof Darrow, the stories of Storm Constantine, Laird Barron and Kiernan and from games like Call of Cthulhu, Kult: Divinity Lost and Deadspace. This is more than music to die to, it is sound to summon the creative machine inside you, to delve deep into the hive underbelly and to traverse the Borderlands, the Underworld and the dark places of the Dreamlands.

CHILDREN OF THE WYRM
The Wyrm descends….
The skies boil as their fires scorch the air. Rarely visible save to those who shall see no more, you can sometimes catch a glimpse from afar, a curved sinuous plume, or a long neck stretching into the sky… But today you can see them everywhere, they are restless, perhaps hungry, or maybe it is as they say in ancient tomes of forgotten knowledge and they are again migrating. A pang sits solidly in my belly that I never knew of a time without these creatures, even though as a youth the air was breathable, even refreshing, and nearly all lived above ground… but that was long ago, and today we hide from the dark smoke, the burning skies, and the acrid air.
We were listless, apathetic, and even though we saw it coming we did not understand the implications of the Great Migration… we were so secure in our knowledge, in our superiority and arrogance, and so we watched in disbelief as the world we knew, the world that old dreams had been built on, crumbled. Assumptions of weaknesses were dashed and exposed for the gross underestimation that they were. We had roused a great force, one we saw, but never believed was coming, even while watching its slavering jaws consuming everything in its path. At last, sitting amongst the ruins of a world devastated by ignorance and disbelief we learned the cold reality of what we had allowed to happen, and worse, what we had done.
It would take us years to come back from that brink of near annihilation, years of desperate struggle, years of bitter battles fought as much with ourselves as our adversaries, to finally begin to venture forth again, to learn how to live again in this new milieu… and we did… It is a new world, to be sure, one which we helped to create, we helped to define, and for better or worse, a world we must adapt to or die. Even now, our kind infiltrate the lairs of the Others, we have become so much like them, nearly identical except for the fear… And we fear aplenty… but as we lay down amongst them, as we lay with them, we hope the offspring of our union might usurp the throne of ignorance we have built, to become the Children of the Wyrm….

Welcome to the Mindspawn Cosmic Static Broadcast, a repository of broadcasts from the archaeological excavations of the cosmic dream archive. These broadcasts are stories, tales, poems, plays, serials and disjointed bits of detritus excavated from the very heart of the chaos that churns out the stuff our dreams are made of. An episode might contain a short story about an ancient dimension traveling insectile species daily life, the journal of a far future prospector, ghost stories from the Great Depression, poetry from the court of the Charnel Gods or some other broadcast caught in the sedimentary deposits of dreams and revealed by our archive archaeologists. Here there be dragons….
Each week we will attempt to present a new broadcast for your consideration, a small taste revealed from the sifting of the vast archive of collective dreams. The tales told here may horrify, revile, intrigue, thrill and may even coax a smile from time to time. There will be one-off broadcasts and ongoing serials that recur over several episodes.
These broadcasts are not for the faint of heart and contain adult themes and adult content. Viewer discretion is advised.

Eye Of The Magister
I had known of the demon for some time… although I never thought much about it one way or the other. It was one of those things you see from afar, like a mountain, not realizing the immensity of what it is up close. So it was with this demon. I had dealt with many of their kind, in fact I’d lived among them at one point in my current existence. Most are exactly what they seem, not that hard to work with once you understand their basic lack of any sort of integrity, accountability, or responsibility. Although, to be fair, they have excessive virtue as long as it has consequence. I befriended an old imp once that was on a journey of ten-thousand years to bury the carcass of a whelp. The imp was unshakable in its resolve to find the burial ground, and only when enough time had flowed would it find its objective. When I inquired why it showed such a steadfast adherence to its task, when so much of demonkind revels in misdirection, lies, and a complete lack of accountability, it answered simply, “break this promise, forfeit my dream….” Dreams are a big deal to most demons….
I wonder, as I look upon the immensity of the great demon before me huge slabs of stinking flesh, rotten and sloughing off with every movement the whole thing alive with myriad other entities just below the surface of its flesh, what dream does it hold dear…? What consequence would such as the Magister Of Filth honor? Quite a quandary as I really needed one of its eyes…. That’s not as momentous as it sounds, the demon in question has several, and it can more or less create new ones at will, so it’s not like I’d be taking anything of real value with respect to its “eyesight.” Regardless of the lack of value one eye has to this behemoth, the value of this ocular trifle is great to me, it is necessary to see the pitfalls along the Path Of Least Resistance, a path I must trod within a fortnight. Should the Magister Of Filth surmise this, no doubt its price for the bauble would be high.
I posit to be sublime, to speak with two tongues is no simple task. In a song I sing of the depravities dreamed, were I only to look with an eye that could see. Into the dark cesspools filled with fecund mysteries I might wade, could I but see through an eye in which such things gleamed. Soft putrescent glows wafting across my sickly vision, wasting their glorious scent on mere human ocular tissues. My mind is suddenly awash with ochre color grinding against my nerves in a cacophony of sickly shapes. I see! I see!! I see…. and I dream.

Erotomechaniks "... music to die to"
Across apocalyptic vistas of blasted earth and twisted machinery, the sound of the Erotomechanicks comes like a blaring klaxon, announcing the unholy alliance of Coph Nia and Mindspawn. Their aural sorcery grinds through the core of one's being, through one's soul. Relentless, ominous, unbeing....
Erotomechanicks shares much with the imagery associated with Giger, Brom, Dali, and Frazetta; strange worlds of dark biomechanical demons where humanity is decaying in the charnel heaps of an apocalyptic landscape. Great hive cites sprawl both above and below ground, engorged by the throngs that serve in the factories, cogs in a wheel that turns relentlessly. The mechanics that service the great machines so reverently incant their liturgies much as a one would sing poetry to a sacred lover.

Jon: Machina, listening to this track I feel like I have achieved victory of a sort via listening to the album cumulatively – this track feels like a reward of sorts – like I have unlocked some kind of empowerment from it through my contemplation, endurance and persistence. Thoughts?
MS: This is the parasite party, that which we have become, as we were all born as parasites, we have now matured down through the ages and across planes of existence. We celebrate being one step closer to the next evolution. A swan song for your own self inflicted and very necessary apocalypse. Like certain trees that will only seed after being burned by fire, we welcome our destruction to achieve our next state, whatever that may be. A reward for sure, a recognition of self, its frailties and its promise.
Jon: What draws you towards making this kind of music in the first place? Do you follow any particular belief system? Would you consider yourself to be a spiritualist or an atheist for example?
MS: What draws me to make this kind of music is really mundane. I love the sound, how you can create and move things with this invisible, dare I say, magical force! I find this style of music is the place I feel the most self-expressed and that it truly suits the stories I want to tell. I love its cinematic and sometimes abstract qualities, the lack of necessary structure, it’s a very free place for me to play.
I follow “no way as way,” by way of Bruce Lee… My experience of Bruce Lee is he one of those people that you’ve never met yet their teachings and philosophy feel as if they spoke directly to you. No way as way is just that to me. Something so simple yet profound, like grasping nothingness or stillness at their essence. That’s as close to a belief system as I have with respect to spiritual or religious belief. I’m pretty much an atheist by trade, and the belief systems I call upon the most are logic and science with a healthy dose of intuition.
Jon: Have you ever had any esoteric or out of the ordinary experiences you can share with us?
MS: Nope. I keep seeking, I keep looking, I keep listening though…. You never know. There’s been some things that at the time they were happening, the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. But no, nothing that actually passed diligent investigation, persistence and open minded objectivity. We could talk some really scary shit if you like… Black holes that eat galaxies. That’s all the monster I need. Having our entire planet wiped out by a gamma ray we never see coming. Instant purge. The creepy ass shit in the micro world that eats our dead skin while we sleep. Fuck me… That’s some esoterica ordinaria for you.
Jon: Do you believe in ghosts/the paranormal etc and have you ever seen anything of this nature?
MS: I know there are incredible phenomena that we have yet to explain, and that we may never really grasp. That’s cool. My brain has room for sitting down for a drink and a chat about the Tao with Jesus, Hel, and the Swamp Thing when they manifest.
We believe we exist, and the idea of the dead haunting us as ghosts is real. The idea exists. Then there is the reality that we are indeed haunted by our dead, in our mind, in our hearts, sometimes in our physical selves. The ghostly specter that we see looking back at us across the thin veil of life and death is often our own mortality.

Jon: Passage sounds like a ‘magical rite’ of sorts albeit a dark one? Do you have much of an interest in magic and the occult?
MS: It’s interesting to me that I have frequently been asked if Passage has some ritual significance. I write ritually rich material all the time, and several tracks on Parasite Theory have bits and bobs of occult references, both implied and overt. Passage is not that.
Passage is an ode to the dragon. It has a bit of the Western dragons of literature in it, there’s a vibe that might be attributed to something like the lair of Smaug in Tolkien’s, The Hobbit. However, this is a far more futuristic setting, and the dragon is far more of an Eastern style dragon. This dragon has an identity complex to some degree, and there’s an insinuation of being something less than one hundred percent organic. Dragon’s can have parasites too it seems… I digress.
To note: In the Chinese calendar I was born in the year of the dragon, in the hour of the dragon, and of course this track is a reference to that accident of birth.
I have had an interest in magic and the occult since childhood. The ideas fascinate me. I did some formal studying as well as a lot of home brew learning about practical magic, illusion, misdirection, and so on. I’ve studied a fair number of occult treatises, and I continue to do so. There are insights and wisdom in understanding various ways we make sense of the world. However, I am grounded in reason, logic, and science. They are the real sources of my magic. Our world is amazing, intriguing, deadly, and utterly magical. That we are having this conversation across many miles, writing in an arcane language that I tap out on a wireless device with runic symbols on it that trigger electronic impulses that translates, somehow, as understandable communication. That’s fucking magic.
Arthur C. Clarke succinctly notes, “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” I completely believe that. I’d also posit, if something is magic, it is only so by the grace of ignorance.

Jon: Baphomet has a fantastic post-industrial element to it, how do you go about producing these amazing sounds? I love the ‘vocals’ - did you make these monstrous sounds? Listening to this I envision a massive ‘deity’, part man/part machine?
MS: I’m always making field recordings. I might hear something in a pot of boiling pasta, a glitching electric heater, an industrial site, caverns, tombs, old mines, pretty much if it makes sound and/or space it may be subject to being repurposed for my audio explorations. Once I’ve captured something tasty, I might fillet, chop, dice, compress and stretch it until I’m content or until it suits the candor and context of what I may be working on at the time.
Our world is rich in sounds, too rich sometimes, as we create more and more noise with our modern machines, drowning out the older more organic (non GMO!) soundscapes. This is a very real thing. We have lost and are losing a variety of soundscapes that were once part of the human experience. That is the way of things though. It is not better or worse, just different. Change is the constant. Beautiful sound and music we haven’t yet dreamed of may be contained within the skiff of static.
The “vocals” in Baphomet are samples of laughter, twisted to taste. They represent a kind of biomechanoid fusion of the Baphomet deity that the Templars supposedly worshipped. Think of the Templars as Blade Runners in this instance and you’re ninety percent there.
H. R. Giger is another artist whose works have inspired my own… like a lot. His pieces are superbly tasty. He has a powerful image entitled, The Spell III, and it is the main inspiration behind the Baphomet track.

Jon: Burning Gods listening to this track I feel like I am lost in a maelstrom - a vortex of sorts?
MS: And the vortex is fire… the fire that sears the soul and consumes the mind, the passions of living life, the freeing of oneself from the bonds of dogma. Burning the gods that are no longer needed is another frequently revisited theme in my art. In the heady flames of this place is is tempting to burn it all, to attain a state of liberation outside of the causal fragments of the mundane life.

Jon: Dhu Mata seems very deep and meditative to me. Do you practice meditation? Do you feel like you are meditating in a sense when you create pieces like this? What does the title mean?
MS: I’m still relating information of my created Shee peoples in this one. Dhu Mata is the divine dark in the language of the Shee, not exactly an entity, but not exactly a non-entity either. In my concept it isn’t exactly worshipped, but it is revered. To date, this is still one of my personal favorite tracks that I’ve worked on. A true instance of everything working out in the most exquisite fashion.
I agree with you that the meditative aspect in Dhu Mata is very pronounced. I do meditate, though my meditation usually comes in the process of doing. I meditate when I work out, when I listen, and certainly my best creations (IMO) have come through when I was in a meditative, or flow, state. Dhu Mata came to be during such a state.
It is a place of solace, a place of stillness, a delicious reverie in a moment of pure creativity without a conscious purpose.

Jon: Gestation contains some diabolical sounding vocals - can you please print some of the lyrics here and discuss them? Or are they meant to be incomprehensible - they sound like some kind of a ‘devil creature’? What were you imagining when you composed this dark masterpiece? I love the ‘church-like’ singing in the background - is this a sample?
MS: The vocals on Gestation is me trying out one of the languages I have created for use in creating stories and songs. The language was created to represent the holy tongue of beings called the Shee-Dun, the Bhaen-Shee, and the Ra-Shee. The church-like singing is just that, hymns, again in the holy tongue of the Shee.
I apologize that at present I cannot locate my notebooks (yes notebooks, dead trees, real ink, waaaaay too much time on my hands), no doubt they are probably at the bottom of some arcane box or tucked behind a bookshelf somewhere, waiting to be exhumed by a future archaeologist that will make all kinds of assumptions about the vanished Shee peoples….
Gestation tackles what it says on the tin, gestation. It’s that period of being in the womb, becoming, or in formation. This is a theme I revisit a lot. I kind of feel we are always in the process of gestation, metaphorically, on some level or other. Ideas, sounds, words, life, all are often referred to as being in a period of gestation. The hymns and chanting in this piece solicit the divine gestation of death, a dirge of sorts, but a dirge that opens the way to the next iteration of existence.

Jon: Migo we hear ravens? at the beginning of the track which sets the eerie tone of the album as a whole straight away then the darkness sets in…What does the title of the track mean? We also hear what sounds like some form of pestilence? What is the last voice sample perhaps “look at your God?” or “look what you’ve done?”
MS: Good ear, and it is the latter, “look what you’ve done” from an old movie I can’t recall right now. Mi-go are insect-like beings from Lovecraftian lore that have these cool canisters that living brains are kept in. Check out the story, The Whisperer in Darkness to get an idea of the type of things I’m referring to. This track is my audio impression of those beings and their ilk, creatures whose motivations are beyond our ability to comprehend.
You are also correct on the ravens-like sounds in the beginning of the piece, although, in this instance it’s actually another member of the corvid family, crows. I have a deep passion related to the corvid birds, I find them incredibly fascinating, highly intelligent and far more entertaining than many humans. I’ve been recording their language for a few years now. One day I’d like to do a complete album related to that.
I did a track called Ravengods, with Phragments, a great artist that was gracious enough to have me collaborate with him on his album, Fratres (Malignant Records). That track and working with Matej Gyarfas was something special for me, illumining a potential path down which I might one day journey to tell my version of these amazing corvid beings existence. Matej is also a super gracious collaborator and all around cool dude.

Dark Moons had pieces of itself laying all over my Audio Sanctum, scattered like body parts from a date with Jason Vorhees. Some bits were from unresolved ideas, some were snippets originally intended for other compositions, and others were sound beds made for this work in particular. The shit was making me crazy…. er…. Each of these disparate pieces was like an independent entity, all orbiting the idea, all saying slightly different things to me, and all of them seemed to obfuscate their meanings. The one bit they all shared in common was their shrouded natures. Dark moons…..
A new moon, a dark moon, is still up there in the cold vacuum of space, it’s just not generally visible to the naked eye. Whether or not a dark moon can be seen, its influence is still felt, tides still rise and fall, it still helps protect the Earth from space rocks, it still affects the Earth’s crust and the magma beneath, and it still drags on the Earth’s rotation. Thus, even unseen our dark moon exerts its effects on our world.
Dark matter could’ve been chosen to serve as my example, for it too exerts its influence without us being able to see or observe it in any fashion save by the most abstract methodology. Nevertheless, in this instance I think a dark moon provides for reflection on things we can sometimes see and other times we cannot. The moon also has a more deeply rooted place in our mythology at present than does dark matter. When you interpret information about the moon it is often colorized by its place in your mythology, and here I use the term mythology as metaphor for whatever you believe, whether or not that has any connection to actual facts. Your mythology might support the opinion that the Moon is green cheese or Chang’e, Hecate, or a torn out chunk from an impact in Earth’s distant past, a wandering satellite captured by Earth’s gravitational field or Sin, and so on… in the words of the master philosopher, Bob Ross, “you decide.”
The moon is also an example of the cyclic nature of so many things. Days and nights, seasons, a night path that is sometimes illuminated, sometimes not. It is generally easier to navigate a path when it is illuminated, one can more easily see pitfalls and objects that might trip us up. Yet, when the moon is dark, when its illumination isn’t present, we actually see the stars far better. It can be very similar with the navigation of one’s own essence. We more easily navigate immediate hazards when we can fully see them, yet sometimes the fainter things, the things farther away from where we are, are easier to see if we don’t rely on our illumination, but rather seek enlightenment from the unknown, the obscure, and the incredibly distant. When your mind cannot grasp, observe the obscured with your heart, with your essence… this is the place and time of the Dark Moons….

The Fearsome Isle was initially inspired by the work, The Fearsome Island, by Albert Kinross, who claimed to have appropriated it from, Silas Fordred, Master Mariner of Hythe. It is a tale of shipwreck on an uncharted island replete with supernatural entities and events, a dangerous mystical castle, and more eldritch things to get into the mind just before a long evening of nightmaring.… the garbled heavily treated voice that dresses some of this auditory dish is, Ruth Golding, narrating the tale penned by Kinross. You can find the original recording on Librivox.org.
I love old tales of times past, and thus I drew from the imagery that the story presented, focusing on the unease, the constant vigilance, the feeling of something not quite right…. and removed it to another place, another time. Whether this place is a worldly location hidden somewhere on the seas of this Earth, some other world in another backwater of our cosmos, or an otherworldly realm glimpsed while scrying the reposed liquid black character glistening on the fluid of the soul, I leave deciding such matters to the listener.
In truth, as is so often the case with these things, the short composition but hints at the stories therein. A story such as this can be repurposed, rearranged, lengthened, abbreviated, and generally applied to a variety of tellings, each more fantastic, or mundane, than the last, building to a crescendo of suspense and myriad endings. My initial inclination was to summarize the work as a whole, and create an overview that touched on the characters, the motivations, and the backstory of the place itself. It was not to be, at least not right now….
Instead, I kept circling back to the introduction of my sonic investigations, almost like trying to capture only the damp of a cave and nothing else. Maybe it’s more of a signpost on the road to some oblivion one is not yet aware of, but whatever its constituent parts or lack thereof, it became about the setting of the scene. The tale as scribed by Kinross became a glimpse into possibility, and for this piece, that became my desire, to set the stage for entering another realm, another plane of existence, not simply another story but a plethora of stories piled high on a mule train of giant worms. Without venturing too far inland, there are shapes, vague impressions of possibilities grown fat with their own potential, yet none so distinct as to demand attention at this primordial juncture. It is standing on the precipice and looking down. The vertigo of this moment whirled about as the vastness of what might be hammered my frail psyche with promises of indiscrete oblivion. It seemed important to simply stand and look without the need to define, categorize, or otherwise attempt to make sense of what I saw, to guess at what could be there…. but also to be wary of traps unseen, of cloying scents and titillating visions, of siren songs and the ignis fatuus, for a misstep at the threshold might cage one’s soul for an eternity on The Fearsome Isle.
