In 2024, students enrolled in the summer field school worked to uncover more of the foundation of MSU’s first observatory, first discovered in summer 2023, as well as artifacts associated with the building. In 2017, the Taylors teamed up with David Ferguson, an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Michigan State University and an expert in improving the health and human performance of race car drivers. After cross-checking old maps, campus archaeology determined that it was the foundation of the first observatory on MSU’s campus, constructed in 1880. This discovery gives insight into how scientific observing, as well as life on campus, has changed over the last 140+ years.

He started looking for other slavery citations from the past 30 years, thinking he’d find one or two. Instead, he found more than 300. Simard was stunned to find that American judges were still citing property cases of enslaved Black people as good law 160 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Simard started the Citing Slavery Project to document the history and continued legacy of the law of slavery in the United States.
