On-device wake word is here! Demonstrating microWakeWord on the ESP32-S3-BOX-3 in Home Assistant. Home Assistant 2024-02-21 | We've introduced a brand new wake-word system! Thanks to the incredible microWakeWord, ESPHome can now perform wake word detection directly on devices like the ESP32-S3-BOX-3 (including the discontinued S3-BOX and S3-BOX-Lite). This makes the wake-word detection very fast, and no data will be sent from your voice satellite to Home Assistant until you've said the wake word.During Year of the Voice Chapter 4, we initially added wake word detection using openWakeWord. Because openWakeWord was too large to run on low-power devices like S3-BOX-3, we chose to run wake-word detection inside Home Assistant instead. This allows a tiny device like the M5 ATOM Echo to simply stream audio and let the processing happen elsewhere. The downside is that adding more voice assistants causes more network traffic and requires more CPU usage in Home Assistant.Thanks to Kevin Ahrendt, who created microWakeWord, we can now run wake word detection on the ESP32-S3 chip inside the S3-BOX-3! Area awareness with Home Assistants open-source voice assistants Home Assistant 2023-12-14 | When you install our voice assistants in several rooms in your house, it's natural to say "turn on the lights" and expect only the lights in that specific room to turn on. With area awareness, this happens automatically in Home Assistant! This command will now turn on all of the lights in the current area, and “turn off the lights” will do the opposite. You can still target the lights in a different area, of course, by specifying: “turn on the lights in the bedroom”.This demonstration of area awareness when using Home Assistant's voice assistants was shown during Year Of The Voice Chapter 5.
