The Beauty of Like a Dragon: Ishin!

SnowiestAngeman 2023-02-27 | Although this series has never had 1 million x 1 million pixel textures or character models where their hair has more polygons than the entirety of Crysis 3, the series instead has always had a visually appealing presentation, and this game is no exception. It is, for lack of a better word, beautiful.

As you may have noticed this video has 21:9 footage WITHOUT borders and an uncapped frame rate in the cutscene I showed, and that is 100% thanks to this mod: github.com/Lyall/IshinFix

I will also say that this is 100% created to prove a weird handful of comments wrong that I got on the video I made before this about Like a Dragon Ishin! where I had some people who were so immensely lacking in a brain that I'm surprised they were able to manoeuvre their fat, inbred fingers around the keyboard strategically enough that they could type their worthless comments about how this game is barely a graphical improvement over Yakuza 3 and then proceeded to say the same thing about Lost Judgment because it turns out these commenters have no eyes either. Yeah they're right because Ryoma looking like a human instead of a Lego brick with a face sticky taped onto it isn't at all an improvement.

However, there's a fair bit of behind the scenes history involved with this game, as well as MANY differences between it and the original version of this game.

This video contains as many of the differences that I could observe that range from obvious ones to subtle ones you wouldn't know if you didn't play the original. I didn't think to mention (but that's not because it's unimportant) all of the new accessibility features added into that game. It also has a new title screen and a lot of UI changes I didn't mention. So yeah it's got those.

UPDATE: The Rhapsody of Chivalry (任侠狂詩曲) from the original game has been replaced in the story by Town Bully from Yakuza 6. However, it's still in the game and can be heard in a lot of the climax battles or ultimate challenges or whatever they're called.

UPDATE 2: Ultrawide and uncapped frame rates have been FIXED thanks to this mod that works perfectly github.com/Lyall/IshinFix

UPDATE 3: Ayo the Ultrawide UI problem and the horrendous stuttering have both been completely fixed by the devs. Woohoo!

How I Set An Impossible Speedrun World Record

SnowiestAngeman 2023-01-22 | To celebrate the 1 year anniversary of the time that I set an unprecedented world record that still to this day remains unbeaten, I thought I would finally share in great detail the tips and tricks that helped me save a lot of time running through all of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon games.

Not every single RGG Studio title was included within this tutorial and for that I do apologise. This was because the strategies used were quite obvious so I thought they needed no explanation. It is also because I still to this day hate Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise and I don't care what people say I hate it stop trying to pretend like it isn't a game about blowing up someone's head then doing chores for your mum for 10 hours and then the game ends. Kenshiro? More like Kenshigo ahead and uninstall the game.

There are some rather mild spoilers for Yakuza 3, and relatively big spoilers for Yakuza 4 in this video. The Yakuza 3 one isn't all too important and Yakuza 4's story is terrible so who cares.

What to Expect from Like a Dragon: Ishin!

As someone who has played the original game and enjoyed it quite thoroughly, I thought I would share my expert analysis that is 100% accurate and there are no tricks within this video I promise I swear man come on believe me bro I swear.

Now BEFORE ANYONE SAYS IT: The arena in this game is definitely harder than some of the other games, but I was exaggerating the difficulty for comedic affect. It does, however, give you about 12 points for beating 100 enemies when the cheapest of the actually good items cost like 50,000 points so that's awesome.

ALSO: some of the keyframe data messed up in the export despite my attempts to fix them :( but if you don't notice anything like that then don't worry about it :)

The Atmosphere of the Yakuza Games

Now, when I say atmosphere, I mean that feeling of feeling like you're really in a living and breathing area. It truly does make you feel like you're actually in Japan, but not in a "makes you feel like Batman/Spider-Man" game review kinda way, but as in it genuinely looks and feels as realistic as it does in real life. The posters, the lights, the people. All of it.

In all seriousness, the Yakuza games do manage to create an incredible atmosphere. When you aren't being presented with wacky substories or the cool fight scenes, you're presented with so many audio and visual sensations that make you feel all kinds of things.

Walking through Kamurocho, seeing all of the neon signs and hearing the sounds of the busy streets.

The quiet of Seiryo High School at night.

The peace of Onomichi in the afternoon.

The little boat that goes around in the river in Sotenbori.

The docks in Yokohama.

And most importantly: The Bowling Alley. WHY, RGG STUDIO...?! Why would you do this to me?! You said you'd be by my side! RGG Studio! All I did, I did for you...!

How are the Yakuza Dynamic Intros so Appealing?

When creating a sequel, many video game developers will use a lot of what they have already made as a basis to begin work on their next project. Some things get replaced or removed; but some things are kept exactly as they are. RGG Studio do uhhh... mostly the latter. This video shows off mostly things that were brought back randomly from old games (like Kiwami 2 and Kaito Files having that Baseball heat action from Yakuza 1) and the asset's first appearance or at least something close to that.

This video does not include every instance of reuse as that would be a 50 hour video, but instead trims A LOT of it down to a nice and tasty 8 minutes because I am not your average 'oh my god click on this 30 hour video to watch 3 seconds of something interesting' YouTuber.

The only reason it still says it in the subtitles is because a lot of the time the non-properly animated cutscenes in Judgment, LAD and Lost Judgment have their subtitles based off the English dub. Therefore, the English Dub is the better dub.

How Yakuza: Like a Dragons Sequel Can Learn From Its Competitors

SnowiestAngeman 2022-01-03 | Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a fantastic Yakuza game, but in terms of a JRPG it leaves a bit to be desired for a huge weeaboo RPG nerd like me. That being said, I reckon the sequel’s gonna be top notch and it could be even better if they were to implement some ideas from its competitors.

Unlike my other videos that start with how, this one is actually serious. Please note that these are some general ideas that I’ve seen in other JRPGs that would be easy to implement, and not something complicated like an ATB gauge or something.

I know it was the intention, but unfortunately Like a Dragon derived ALL of its combat inspiration from Dragon Quest, rather than looking at good things from everything. Hopefully though with the sequel they branch out and cherrypick some of the juicy stuff from other games to help improve the game itself.
