From the Footplate of a Scot EP - [RME 1002] Bob Gellatly 2024-12-14 | Sound recordings from the cab of 'Royal Scot' 4-6-0 no.46115 'Scots Guardsman' as it departs from Hellifield, stops at Settle to take water and climbs up to Ribblehead viaduct. The train is the 'Royal Scot Tour' special on 13 February 1965. Published by Eyemark Records as a mono EP in 1968. The descriptive notes are not easily matched to the sound recordings. The locomotive is now preserved and owned by The West Coast Railway Company at Carnforth.

The recordings were made by Derek Robinson (tracks 1, 12, 13) and Tony Wright (tracks 2-12) and the LP was released by Sound Stories - no date given. LMS 6201 Princesss Elizabeth features on the cover and on Side One.

The recordings were made from 1976 to 1979 of special trains on British main lines hauled by preserved steam locomotives. The recordings were made by Derek Robinson (tracks 1-6) and Tony Wright (tracks 7-17) and the LP was released by Sound Stories - no date given. LMS 6201 'Princesss Elizabeth' features on the cover and on the Side One recordings.
Great Western in Gloucestershire [SDL 220] - Side Two Bob Gellatly 2024-02-21 | This is Side Two of the mono LP 'Great Western in Gloucestershire' [SDL 220]. The recordings were made by Peter Duddridge in 1965 in the Cheltenham area. There is a lot of variety - passenger and goods, tender and tank engines. Of particular interest are the recordings made on the auto train between Chalford, Stroud and Gloucester. I have not heard this on a recording before. The LP was released by Saydisc in 1971. The record sleeve is a bright yellow.
Great Western in Gloucestershire [SDL 220] - Side One Bob Gellatly 2024-02-20 | This is Side One of the mono LP 'Great Western in Gloucestershire'. The recordings were made in 1965 on the Coleford branch of the Severn & Wye Railway in the Forest of Dean. The locomotives are fomer GWR Pannier Tanks. The final track is 13 minutes of a journey on the footplate which can become rather monotonous. The recordings were made by Peter Duddridge and the LP was released by Saydisc in 1971. The record sleeve is a bright yellow.
M. V. pour Rosporden [EAF 139] Bob Gellatly 2024-01-08 | This is the french version of the EP 'Mixed Train for Rosporden' [EAF 139] which has the french title 'M.V. pour Rosporden'. These are recordings made of the metre-gauge Reseau Breton system of the SNCF in February/March 1967 just a few months before the system was closed. The recording engineer is not identified on the sleeve notes but the track descriptions are by Michel Doerr so I assume he also made the recordings. Released by Argo Transacord in 1968.I have endeavoured to provide english translations of the sleeve notes with a little help from Google.
Talyllyn Trains EP [ZFA 153] Bob Gellatly 2023-12-22 | This is the stereo EP 'Talyllyn Trains' [ZFA 153]. Sound recordings made by Peter Handford in May 1972 of the Welsh narrow gauge Talyllyn Railway which runs between Towyn and Abergynolwyn and is just over seven miles long. The line was opened in 1865 as a slate-carrying railway and has never closed. It was taken over by volunteers in 1951 making it the first preserved railway in the world. Two of the original engines, No.1 Talyllyn and No.2 Dolgoch, are still in service. The gauge is the unusual 2ft 3in.The recordings were released by Argo Transacord as a stereo EP in 1972.
Sounds of the Severn Valley Railway [RESM 020] - Side Two Bob Gellatly 2023-11-18 | This is Side Two of the LP recording 'Sounds of the Severn Valley Railway' [RESM 020]. These are recordings made in 1979 in the early years of the heritage railway. Featured locomotives are BR-built Ivatt class 2MT 2-6-0 no.46643 (referred to as no.6643 in the sleeve notes although it was never an LMS loco), LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0 no.8233 (BR 48773) and Collett Pannier Tank no.5764 (L95).Side Two finishes with an interesting sequence recorded in the signal box at Arley.The recording is attributed to Aspal Productions and the stereo LP was released by Response Records in 1979.

These are recordings made in 1979 in the early years of the heritage railway. Featured locomotives are no.4819 'Hinton Manor', Prairie Tank no.4566 and Standard Tank no.80079. The quality of the sound is very good.The recording is attributed to Aspal Productions and the stereo LP was released by Response Records in 1979.
Sounds of the West Somerset [RESM 018] - Side Two Bob Gellatly 2023-10-21 | This is Side Two of the LP recording 'Sounds of the West Somerset' [RESM 018]. These are recordings made in 1978 and 1979 on the heritage West Somerset Railway. The heritage railway had only started operating in 1976 with just a few locomotives. There is more variety of sounds than on Side One with the inclusion of the Bagnall 0-6-0ST (with chime whistle) and the Park Royal dmu. There are also some nice signal box sounds.The sound quality of the recordings is very good. They are attributed to Aspal Productions and the stereo LP was released by Response Records in 1979.
Sounds of the West Somerset [RESM 018] - Side One Bob Gellatly 2023-10-20 | This is Side One of the LP recording 'Sounds of the West Somerset' [RESM 018]. These are recordings made in 1978 on the heritage West Somerset Railway of GWR Pannier Tank no.6412 - a Collett design dating from 1932. The heritage railway had only started operations in 1976 with just a few locomotives. The sound quality of the recordings is very good. They are attributed to Aspal Productions and the stereo LP was released by Response Records in 1979.We start with the sound of 6412 shunting stock at Minehead followed by an on-board recording of a run between Dunster and Washford. Unless you have an interest in the WSR or in GWR Pannier Tank engines there is little to keep the listener awake. You have been warned!
Flying Scotsman and other Steam Locomotives in Action [PSP 8] - Side Two Bob Gellatly 2023-10-03 | This is Side Two of 'Flying Scotsman and other Steam Locomotives in Action' [PSP 8]. However, there are no recordings of 'Flying Scotsman' on Side Two. Instead we have an interesting recording of an industrial loco on the Storefield Ironstone Quarry Railway which is in Northamptonshire, a photo of which can be found on flickr - copy and paste link https://flic.kr/p/2jkghRX. The rest of the recordings were made over the last weekend of steam operating on BR - 3rd/4th August 1968. There are five sequences recorded on board a train hauled by an unidentified Black Five. This is followed by a nostalgic collection of sounds - a better compilation than on Side One.Sadly the sleeve notes lack specific identification of the locos heard (other than 'Oliver Cromwell'). Surely this information must have been noted by the sound recordist, Stanley R. White, at the time.The stereo LP was released by President Special Projects in 1972.
Flying Scotsman and other Steam Locomotives in Action [PSP 8] - Side One Bob Gellatly 2023-10-01 | This is Side One of 'Flying Scotsman and other Steam Locomotives in Action' [PSP 8]. These recordings from the last years of steam on British Railways were made by Stanley R. White and released as a stereo LP in 1972 by President Special Projects. The first half of the recordings are of Flying Scotsman on main line specials. The second half is mostly made up of an on-train recording of a journey behind an unidentified 'West Country' Pacific.Sadly I think this is a most uninspiring set of recordings.

It is a collection of sound recordings of steam operating on minor railroads in the southern states of the USA in 1959-60, the last years of steam in the USA. The sound engineers are Stuart Plummer and Brad Miller. It was released in the UK by the Argo Record Company in 1969 as a stereo LP. In addition to the descriptive notes, the sleeve also gives technical details of the locomotives heard on the recordings. I have placed these at the beginning of each relevant section.

Beeches Light Railway - 27 June 2015 Bob Gellatly 2023-02-17 | The Beeches Light Railway ran around the grounds of Adrian Shooter's home in Oxfordshire. He enjoyed staging Open Days to which various railway societies were invited. All proceeds went to charity. Sadly Adrian died on 13 December 2022 so this video is uploaded in his memory. He was driving the Darjeeling Himalyan locomotive No.19 with its rake of replica coaches.

Worth Valley Engines [EAF 151] Bob Gellatly 2022-12-12 | Sound recordings by Peter Handford on the former Midland Railway Oxenhope branch line from Keighley. The line was closed by BR in 1962 and re-opened as a heritage railway - the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway - in 1968. The recordings were made in May and June 1970 on the heritage railway. Published by Argo Transacord as a mono EP in 1970. Peter Handford had been working as a sound recordist during the making of 'The Railway Children' which was filmed on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. He also recorded the companion EP 'Steam in the Worth Valley' [EAF 149].
