Today, I show you how to fit a ProT5 UVB Kit inside a wooden or PVC vivarium. The method used is much the same for all linear fixtures: a set of clips is screwed into the roof of the enclosure, then the lamp is shoved into place. I also show how to remove or uninstall these fixtures at a later date.

For those who are curious...
I mention in this video that visible light *might* have a role in the repair UV-induced DNA damage. I didn't go into detail about this because it is something I am still researching. The purported mechanism would depend on enzymes called photolyases (Wikipedia entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photolyase ) which are active in many organisms from bacteria to koalas, but I do not yet know whether they function in reptiles. Expect to hear me talking more about this at some point in the future!

Why does this matter? It matters because an assumption that reptiles are a relic from a bygone era (combined with the widely-held misnomer that evolution is a process of progression towards superiority) leads to the belief that reptiles are necessarily unintelligent creatures which act only in response to instincts. This, in turn, fails to support proper welfare.
Reptiles aren't prehistoric pets and snake racks shouldn't be the hobby standard.

Reptile lighting is all about replicating sunlight. We should be using lamps to replicate in both form and intensity the sunlight to which the herps we are keeping would expose themselves in nature; for bearded dragons, this means reasonably intense useful infrared (consisting of infrared A and infrared B), plenty of visible light, and UV indices ranging from ~5 at the basking area to 0 in the shade. We should also seek to replicate the changes in lighting which would naturally occur throughout the day, having the longest wavelengths becoming present earliest and disappearing latest. (Although I didn't talk about it in today's video, we should also wish to replicate yearly changes in sunlight conditions, altering day length depending on season - that's one for another day.)
What bearded dragon lighting is NOT about is offering temperatures. Not once in this episode did I mention temperatures, and for good reason: replicating sunlight is one thing, maintaining temperatures another. I will be back in a future video to discuss this concept in more detail.

In this reptile lighting guide, I aim to illustrate how replicating sunlight (both in form and composition) should be our primary concern when we are selecting lamps for herps. Traditionally, people have seen lamps as a means for keeping things warm, as is reflected in the very name "heat lamp". However, this line of reasoning causes us to disregard the closeness of our lighting to sunlight: we should be using lamps to simulate the light found in nature, not control temperatures! To do so requires a knowledge of what sunlight is, the lamp technologies which allow us to offer each part of the spectrum, and how to go about measuring the intensity of radiation offered by a certain lamp at a particular distance away from it. All of these things are considered in this video.
Wondering what UV indices your herp requires? NOTE: Solarmeter 6.5 usage (06:52)
One of the comments received during the peer review stage of this video's production noted how in the video, I use a Solarmeter 6.5 to measure the UV indices around the vivarium. In so doing, I have the Solarmeter measuring the indices in mid air, which at first glance would appear to be an irrelevant measurement as far as the geckos - which bask sat on branches, not hovering - are concerned. However, I would like to point out why the measurements I was taking were suitable. Notice that when using the Solarmeter, I keep the button pressed in and move my hand in a horizontal line. Now notice that at all times, the sensor (on the top of the Solarmeter) is the same distance from the UV lamp as the top of the basking branch in the enclosure, ie the same distance from the lamp as the geckos will be when basking. You will now understand why what I was doing was appropriate. (I will likely make a video about Solarmeter 6.5 usage at some point in the future - if that would be of use to you, then let me know!)

Today, I show you how to build a false bottom for a vivarium (or paludarium, or terrarium, or whatever it is you're working with) out of relatively cheap materials. I discuss how the drainage layer will be continuous with a water section, then add substrate to the enclosure and go on a discourse about vivarium plant care. With all of this out of the way, we are squared up for what is potentially the most important part of the vivarium build, the stage which will transform the enclosure from uninhabitable to hospitable for both plants and animals: the addition of lighting.
The vivarium being developed in this video series was purchased from Custom Aquaria. If you would like to buy a similar vivarium from them, you can message Matthew and Lisa - the business owners - on their Facebook page here: facebook.com/CustomAquaria.Rushden
You can find all of the rest of the products shown in this video on Amazon via the links compiled in the following kits. I have included most of the plants which I used in the video (or ones very similar where I coudn't find the specific types on Amazon). However, I would recommend using plants suited to the animals you will be keeping rather than just copying what I'm doing, and of course your personal taste in plants will likely be different to mine, anyway, so maybe just head to the garden centre when it comes to plant shopping :)

The most involved part of a bioactive vivarium build is making the background. It is this feature which makes a vivarium or terrarium: the animals will explore it; the plants will grow up or around it; and it can become the centrepiece of the setup. Therefore, it is important that you design your background with its long-term existence in mind - it should not only be well-built enough to last through the years, but you should also consider how functional it will be once lighting is installed and plants have grown in. With all of this in mind, you will see that I kept the vivarium background mostly flat on the back pane of glass, as this allows plenty of space for broad-leaved plants to grow in front of it; on the side pane, a larger cork bark "trunk" with a projecting branch offers a basking site for the reptilian inhabitants this enclosure will receive. ("Broad-leaved plants", which I will be adding to the enclosure in the next video in this series, are also intentional: I have found from experience that lined day geckos will only readily climb on plants with big, wide leaves, so these will form the bulk of the planted area of the vivarium. We want the geckos to be able to use as much of the enclosure's volume as possible!)

Many of the topics I have covered in previous videos - such as why all reptiles should be offered ultraviolet lighting - have been contentious in that they go against the grain of popular opinion. However, in most of these cases, I have been explaining things about reptile care which are strictly true or false, or at least close to this (we don't have any good reason to suppose that any of the reptiles we keep do not benefit from the right intensity of UVB, to continue my last example). This time, however, there are significant reasons why cohabitation might not be recommended: leopard geckos can fight, can bully each other, and can ultimately kill each other. So what case can really be made in favour of cohabitation?
Put simply, we have to take note of the benefits which are brought (to the lizards) by keeping leopard geckos together. These benefits are not widely recognised, so today we have to take a look at a couple of scientific papers for me to get the point across that naturally, leopard geckos are not the solitary animals people think they are.
Only when we compare the benefits to the costs of introducing leopard geckos to each other are we able to come to a valid conclusion as to whether we should do so or not: it is my view that, if (and only if) sufficient precautions are taken to ensure its success, cohabitation is not only viable but to be recommended.

One cause of these symptoms is brumation. Bearded dragons are drawn by their natural instincts to burrow down and sleep throughout the winter - that is to say, they hibernate. ("Brumation" means basically the same thing as hibernation, so we won't worry about any distinctions in this video.) As their keepers, it is our duty to facilitate this behaviour in our bearded dragons, but what exactly should you do? Today, I give a broad overview of bearded dragon brumation and then attempt to answer the prevailing questions around this topic.

Today, I illustrate the proper application of bioactivity within reptile keeping, and I put forwards what I believe to be the biggest hurdle in progressing your reptile care.
---------------------
"Progressing Your Reptile Care" is a collaboration between many reptile channels hoping to inspire change in the reptile-keeping community. The videos are presented in a topic circle/wheel. Each video covers a different topic. You can join the circle at any point by choosing to watch any of the videos within it: there is no start or finish.

"Heat lamps" - tungsten filaments in an oxygen-free atmosphere - carry a somewhat misleading name. Those of you that are familiar with the significance of near-infrared radiation (as I discussed here - youtube.com/watch?v=dUJZ04sqhxk&t=11s) know to pick a tunsten filament lamp over any other "heater", but the benefits of these sorts of lamps have little to do with their ability to keep an enclosure warm. It is, as I suggested, their power to offer near-infrared which makes them so beneficial. Yet, just chucking one of these bulbs into an enclosure is not the end of the story: how can you be sure that the near-infrared is sufficiently intense? Indeed, do you know that it isn't TOO intense? Are you sure that the balance of the different wavelengths in your enclosure - UVB, UVA, visible light, and near-infrared consisting of infrared A and infrared B - matches sunlight and thus is optimal for you herp?
If you are using a thermostat to control the lamp, the answer to all of these questions is a definite "no". So... what should you be using instead? This is the question that I will try my best to answer in the video.

Getting a bearded dragon to enjoy tucking into their salads can be a little bit tricky at times, to say the least. In my experience, this is not because they are intrinsically opposed to vegetables: they just like things fresh and they like things varied. Growing weeds is a simple and cheap way to solve this issue (and brings with it a range of other benefits, as discussed in the video) that requires little space or effort.
Some good weed mixes are available through the links below. (As an Amazon associate, I earn a commission if you purchases through these links. You don't have to pay any extra.)

[NOTE: References #6 and #7 refer specifically to the eastern green lizard, Lacerta viridis, NOT the western green lizard. Due to their similarity and the debate regarding whether they should even be considered as fully separate species, I am willing to assume that the conclusions drawn here are applicable to both populations of the green lizard. (And in case you're interested - not that my opinion is worth a carrot - I don't consider viridis and bilineata to be separate species. Yes, there are important distinctions in the populations, but they CAN interbreed to produce fertile offspring, and this is sufficient evidence for a beginning taxonomic lumper like myself to consider them a single species. I've said this before, but such concepts as the species are only here to help us understand the natural world: they are discontinues categories used to make sense of a continuous phenomenon, being speciation. Then, they should have rigid definitions, or else they have no real meaning whatsoever. Species as groups or populations of potentially interbreeding organisms is the definition that is, across the board, the most useful, so that's the definition that I feel should be set. Western and eastern green lizards do not, then, fit the bill as separate species, differences notwithstanding.)]

Celtic Reptile & Amphibian, an enterprise started and managed by Harvey and Tom, is all about conserving European herptiles through captive breeding; it is a sensible and productive purpose for amphibian and reptile keeping. As you will soon gather, "breeding" does not necessarily mean "simplistic": another aim of the company is to promote proper welfare within herpetoculture by replicating the wild, something that is best done by keeping our animals outdoors. Then, Celtic Reptile & Amphibian is a project after my own heart, and I am elated to be able to share this video with you all!

I still intend to come back and explain the decisions made in setting up this enclosure, so if you're wondering about certain things, just hang on for a couple of videos and I may well cover what you're after.
The bioactive clean up crew in this vivarium consists of -
- Porcellio laevis "Orange" ("giant orange" woodlice)
- Porcellionides pruinosus ("tropical grey" woodlice)
- Oniscus asellus (common woodlice)
- Porcellio scaber (common rough woodlice)
- Dendrobaena sp. (types of earthworm)
- Springtails (unknown sp. - original stock referred to as "tropical springtails")

The typical vivarium background consists of expanding foam, silicone, and coconut fibre - either that, or just painted polystyrene. In all honesty, I don't think that this ever turns out that well, so I've devised my own way of making a background for a reptile tank. Rather than carving foam and painting things to sit back and admire how the enclosure looks "similar" to the real deal, I want to be confident in the knowledge that my background IS the real deal: real wood and real rocks. (This is more than just an aesthetic privilege, as I doubt that the thermal properties of a fake could ever match the real thing.)
But how to do this? Find out in today's video!

The vivarium I'm setting up today is from Repti-Life (repti-life.co.uk), but the process shown is much the same for any other vivarium - I've built several brands over the years, and they're all similar in this regard. In my experience, Repti-Life have been the best company for providing bespoke wooden builds, so I would certainly recommend them if you're in the market for a new vivarium.

You've probably gone through life referring to things as "species" of... other things (brown rats are a species of mammal; corn snakes are a species of snake, etc) without really thinking about it. A species is, you might argue, just a particular type of organism. But when you DO think about it, that doesn't really make sense: a red bearded dragon and a yellow bearded dragon, despite outward appearances, are clearly the same species. A pug and a greyhound, even, are the same species. Yet we have it that a blue tit and a great tit (which I would argue look more similar than a pug and a greyhound) are separate species. So what's the difference? Why does it feel right that we class them in this way?
A big difference which holds in many cases is reproductive isolation. Pugs and greyhounds readily interbreed to produce fertile offspring; blue tits and great tits do not. The question is, does this always hold?
Before answering this in today's video, I open up the broader topics of taxonomy and classification. By giving you an idea of hierarchies and cladistics, I hope to illustrate the failings of a system wherein the most continuous thing of all - life - is attempted to be organised within discontinuous categories. Ring species provide a spacial example of what is normally a temporal issue in the classification of living things, so I explain this concept today, too.
(Actually, the original idea of a ring species may not apply to the Larus gulls, although this doesn't really affect what I state in the video. If you're interested, you can learn more about this here - royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/abs/10.1098/rspb.2004.2679. Thanks to Francis Cosquieri for the heads up about this!)

Most reptile companies have had a stab at making packaged diets to replace either partially or fully the need to offer livefoods to your bearded dragon. I wanted to find out whether any of them could ever be the wonder product that you're possibly looking for, so tested a range of the different foods on offer: a pre-formed gel, pellets, and a "mix it yourself" gel. As well as seeing which my own bearded dragon would eat, I had a look at the ingredients to asses the validity of these diets.
Today, I show you the results of these tests and reveal the best bearded dragon diet.

In today's video, I explain the lighting changes that our reptiles would experience out in the wild and go on to discuss how to replicate this in captivity with your vivarium lighting setup. (This extends far beyond bearded dragons; all reptiles should be offered tailored lighting setups in captivity.)

Most of the people against cohabitation (the practice of keeping multiple reptiles in one enclosure) are only parroting what they've heard other people say: they've no experience with it themselves. Indeed, the bandwagon mindset seems to have produced an armada of anti-cohabbers, none of them ever having put two reptiles together. Whilst I wholeheartedly agree that cohab may never work for some species - I doubt that keeping bearded dragons together is a good idea - I am hesitant to prescribe against it in the general case. (Are we sure that all reptiles cannot benefit from within-species interaction? I'm certainly not!)
In this video, I show you my plans for cohabiting leopard geckos, introduce my Chinese leopard snakes to each other, and offer a few words of warning against cohab. I don't feel ready to disclose all my thoughts on this subject, so that's not what this video is about; hopefully it'll give you something to think about, though.

I've had this Fluval Roma 90 planted aquarium setup for over six and a half years, yet I've never been truly happy with it. Still, I've learnt a lot in that time about how to keep an aquarium up and running, and finally the scene is set for getting new fish to complete the tank.
Want to set up an aquarium like this yourself? I've compiled kits for you to get everything you need through Amazon.
US/Ca kit - kit.co/JTB_Reptiles/betta-community-tank-kit-us-ca
UK kit - kit.co/JTB_Reptiles/betta-community-tank-kit-uk
I've had many ideas about the direction in which I would like to take this aquarium, but as I only have the one fish tank, I scrapped ideas of location-specific setups (I've long liked the idea of a South American communitope) in favour of a good, old-fashioned community tank. In choosing the fish, I've selected mainly small, ambivalent species, but have been careful to maintain as much variety in colour, body shape, and behaviour as possible. (X-ray tetras are silvery and kite-shaped; glowlight danios are incredibly fast and a pastel orange; white cloud mountain minnows are outgoing surface dwellers, and the golden variety offers some yellow to the tank.) However, small shoaling fish are small shoaling fish whichever way you look at it, and I knew that this tank could really benefit from something larger and more impressive: welcome, the Siamese fighting fish.
Today, I show you me buying and quarantining all of the new fish and discuss nigh everything about the aquarium.

My reptile collection hasn't had any new additions since the last reptile room tour I did back in April 2020, but it has still changed almost beyond recognition. Hopefully you will agree that the changes are for the better! Ideally, by the next reptile tour I will have the final vivarium added in to the reptile room, and we can then gear up for getting my final reptile (for the time being, anyway).

Actually, these are fairly simple questions to answer: in each case, the answer is yes. We have evidence of positive interaction between these species (and others, like bearded dragons and Burmese pythons) and UVB, so it is in the best interests of these animals to give them a species- and enclosure-specific UVB bulb. That much is obvious.
But what about those species for which we haven't tested for positive interactions - like vitamin D3 synthesis? For example, should a Mexican black kingsnake be offered a UVB lamp or not? (Which I suppose is a subspecies and not a species, but that's by-the-by.)
One argument states no. After all, why waste the money on expensive lighting equipment if the animal appears to live a healthy life without it? The counter argument states yes; we've got evidence of lots of different species that aren't just reptiles interacting well with UVB, so to offer it to the untested species will likely do them good.
This last argument was recently given wider attention by Liam of the YouTube channel "Reptiles & Research" (youtube.com/channel/UCsG-GgCMXkRLh2l1dz9LAHA) in an article that he wrote up for the ReptiFiles website (reptifiles.com/reptile-uvb-light-necessity/?fbclid=IwAR2zBetoCLYFd5Wreb8WdlZ2xLvUWsaaoBe4uA1oRVyMcvK42i0NxmvoKG4). It is an argument that I very much support, but I don't think that you could really understand its importance - and the special reliance upon birds - without some prior knowledge of the Tetrapod family tree.
Cue, my own video.
(Thank you to Liam for letting me use the photo of one of his MBKs basking in this video.)

FOR ANYBODY WONDERING: My knowledge of the phylogenetic tree of life comes primarily from Dawkins' "The Ancestor's Tale" (amzn.to/37m8JVs - as an Amazon associate, I earn a commission if you purchase through this link) and the "One Zoom" website (onezoom.org) recommended within it. I'd recommend these resources to anyone. A more approachable version of Dawkins' book for those who are unfamiliar with biology is "The Animal Kingdom: a Very Short Introduction" (amzn.to/2YzgmnM), although it doesn't go beyond the animal kingdom and doesn't go into the same level of detail as "The Ancestor's Tale".

Today, I show you how to build a solid branch network into your vivarium. Recently I showed you how to install vertical branches (youtube.com/watch?v=j7w6N_Vw4OM&t=2s), but these don't offer much to a corn snake in terms of climbing opportunity. Rather, they are mainly aesthetic additions to the setup and can act as pillar supports in a vivarium stack. Thus, I felt that I could better utilise the space in Red's enclosure by adding some longer, thicker branches in more horizontal positions... But how to do that without them ending up resting flat on the floor? I had to go back to the drawing board!
Wanting to set up an enclosure like this for your own snake? I've compiled lists of what you'll need alongside links to the relevant pages on Amazon here:
US/Ca - kit.co/JTB_Reptiles/bioactive-snake-kit-us-ca
UK - kit.co/JTB_Reptiles/bioactive-snake-kit-uk
(NOTE: These kits only include what you'll need to convert a preexisting snake vivarium into a bioactive one. I therefore have not included the essential heating and lighting equipment you will require.)
