Crafts With EllenWhen Adam Savage released his first Every Day Carry (EDC) bag, I loved it from the start. But when he released the sewing pattern of it for sale, I was even happier. Making this bag myself allowed me to learn about its design in close contact and gain insight into not only why it has the features it has, but also why it was made the way that it is. This pattern is made by a company that makes these bags in large numbers, which means that there are lots of lessons hidden in the process. I had a great time going through this process and am very happy with my new EDC.

Be safe!Making new stamps and ink pads for old mechanical stampsCrafts With Ellen2023-02-15 | I fixed up some old mechanical stamps by replacing the stamp itself and refurbishing the ink pad. So much fun!
The stamps were made by hand carving from a pink carving block with a lino cutter and by laser cutting a rubber sheet specifically made for the laser.
For the ink pads, I removed the old interior and used double sided tape to stick some felt in there. Add some stamp ink (you can buy refill bottles at the stationary store) and you're done!

So when I spotted someone with a changing robe, I just had to make one! It's pretty straightforward, since it's just a large rectangle of fabric with a neck hole cut into it and sewed closed at the sides.
This is a very simple sewing project, great for beginners. I sewed it up in the morning and went swimming that same afternoon!

Be safe!Screen printing with a vinyl cutterCrafts With Ellen2020-10-10 | Recently, the maker community lost Sharon, known online as Figments Made. She was a treasured member of our community, a true maker at heart, and ever ready with words of praise or encouragement. May her support, kindness and enthusiasm be carried forward by all of us to keep her spirit alive.
To remind myself of her and process her loss, I printed a shirt with her logo on it. I only needed a couple of prints, so instead of using photo emulsion and exposing the screen, I used a vinyl cutter to make a mask. It only lastsfor a few prints, but it's quick and easy to do.

Be safe! How to glue up a puzzle without a backer board | TutorialCrafts With Ellen2020-09-28 | Most jigsaw puzzles I take back apart when I finish them, so that I can do them again another time. This one was particularly difficult though, and the image is from one of my favorite painters, so I decided to hang it on the wall.
I've seen people frame puzzles or glue them onto a backer board, but I really wanted to see if I could glue just the pieces together. That way it's really just a puzzle that's hanging on the wall. You could even hang it in the middle of a room as a sort of room divider, and still be able to see the back of the puzzle pieces.
Turns out, all you need is a little (okay, a lot) of decoupage glue and some oven paper!

So I made a design, bought a sheet of 18 mm birch plywood and made all the pieces fit onto that single sheet. This was my first time working with plywood, and I really enjoyed it. It's so even and stable, without any internal tension or other issues. It was also the first time I used sanding sealer, stain and water based lacquer. All of those were definitely a success and I intend to use them a lot more often in the future :)

I was overly ambitious and made the compartments for the filling beads really small, but you can get away with much bigger ones. That will save you a lot of time. You also don't need to make a quilt top, you can easily use plain fabric and get the same functionality.

Be safe!Kaylees Spaceship Repair | Foolfly S01 E10Crafts With Ellen2019-05-31 | Money's always tight for a group of spacefaring cowboys like us. Don't need much myself, just some basics and the occasional piece of chocolate and I'm all good. But Serenity, that's something else. She needs proper care. Only so much love can do when it comes to keepin' a ship flyin'. I do what I can to prevent problems, but sometimes it just ain't enough...

#heavymetalknitting #girlpowerA Knitter In The ForgeCrafts With Ellen2019-05-21 | I owe an enormous thank you to Alex Pole, the blacksmith in this video. He opened up his workshop for my friends and I to experience blacksmithing. He taught me how to use the power hammer, which is an intimidating piece of machinery. And when I told him I wanted to forge a set of knitting needles, he not only loved the idea, but really ran with it by proposing we start with that massive chunk of steel. This whole project was ridiculous, fun, and an experience I will never forget.

Be safe! How to make pattern weights | Sewing tutorialCrafts With Ellen2019-01-27 | Not only are these pattern weights heavy enough to keep things in place, small enough to not get in the way, and shaped in a way that makes them great for small corners, they are also quick and easy to make and require very little material. No wonder they're my favorite :)
What you'll need: - pen, paper and triangle ruler to draw your pattern - small amount of woven fabric, depending on how many of these little weights you want to make - thread that matches your fabric - filling material (dry rice, poly filling beads or something else that's heavy and granular)

Be safe!Making a custom cross stitch for AprilCrafts With Ellen2018-11-29 | I made a custom cross stitch pattern, depicting April Wilkerson's new workshop and the quote "Home is where the workshop is". It's a gift for her to thank her for the enormous amount of inspiration she has given me over the last years.
I finished the cross stitch a while ago, in a mad rush to have it done on time to bring to Makers Central. After that, I never got around to actually making a video for you. Well, I've finally found the time to go through the footage and edit it! As a result of the time pressure (I literally framed it the night before I left for Birmingham), I didn't get a lot of shots. But I did my best to turn it into something useful, that can give you an idea of the cross stitching basics. I'll go into more detail with my next cross stitch project :)
What you'll need: - Pattern (make it yourself or buy one) - Cross stitch fabric (also called Aida cloth) - Cross stitch floss in the colours you need (main brands are DMC and Anchor) - Embroidery needle - Scissors - Picture frame

So one of the first things I did when I got a wood lathe was to turn a new handle for my teeny tiny seam ripper. It's a small project with a big impact on usability. Also, woodturning is a lot of fun!
What you'll need: - old seam ripper - hammer - wood lathe plus accompanying tools and safety gear - small branch - drill
