The SCSI2SD does not appear to make much difference to the overall speed of the system.

While by today's standards, the machine seems slow, this would have been an amazing computer to have as a CS student. I believe it was a required purchase for CS students at VT at that time.

I’ve had it since around 2009-2010. It features a Blackfin BF537 (500MHz) processer, a Lantronix Matchport wireless module, laser "range finding", four motor tread drive, and mine has the stereo camera upgrade. My SRV-1 also has front and rear ultrasonic modules that I added that are not currently connected. I recently pulled this robot from display and decided to see if I could get it running again. Surprisingly I found copies of most of the software on backups, the lipo battery still held a charge, and old copies of firmware and some documentation is online and available via the Wayback Machine.
There are several pieces of client software that run under Windows or Linux including test and Console modules, a Delphi Console, and a module for Roborealm. The Delphi Console and Roborealm both take advantage of the stereo video. The SRV-1 can be programmed in C and older versions of the firmware even had a Lisp interpreter available. There are two ways to wirelessly connect to the clients - 1. Adhoc mode where the SRV-1 generates a wireless “hotspot”, and 2. Infrastructure mode where the SRV-1 connects to your wireless router. I was able to get Adhoc mode working, but ran into numerous issues with Infrastructure mode due to advances in wireless security, etc. The best I could get was around 4-6 FPS on the wireless video feed in Adhoc mode. I recall years ago that in Infrastructure mode, the FPS was considerably higher.
This video will demo several pieces of the SRV-1 client software, video capabilities, etc.Rug Warrior Pro Mobile RobotWin Heagy2022-01-01 | This is my Rug Warrior Pro “Brains” (electronics) kit purchased around 1998 for about $300. The “Braun” (motors, base, wheels, etc.) was also available for about $200, but I elected to build my own base. I was living in an apartment at the time so this was built using a jigsaw and a drill and other basic hand tools. The base is a little rough, but it worked. I used two modified hobby servos for the motors, model airplane tires for the wheels, and the wheel encoders were copied from the book “Mobile Robots: Inspiration to Implementation” (J. Jones and A. Flynn). An excellent book by the way and still has lots of great info in it over 20 years later. The kit was provided by AK Peters publishers as a companion to the book. I recently pulled this robot off the display shelf and decided to get it running again. It still works well after all these years.
My original build had a plexiglass bumper skirt around it, but that seems to have been lost to time, so I quickly added front and rear bumpers. I do want to make a proper bumper skirt again at some point.
It was originally powered by six C-cell nicad batteries that I recently replaced with two 18650 lipos. This is much less bulky and lighter. I found an old copy of the Interactive C (IC) software on one of my old computers and managed to get it working. It still works well on an old Win XP install, but is a bit particular sometimes when loading software (as you’ll see in the video).
The video demos the IC software, bootstrapping and loading the Pcode (the OS for the Rug Warrior), and then loading rwp-test.lis and demoing the test routines, followed by loading behave.lis and and demoing each of the behavior routines. You could program the Rug Warrior in IC using this software and I did write a few programs back when I was using this robot. The test routines included with IC were also modified slightly for better performance.
This was a fairly capable platform for the day and was able to multitask quite well. It implemented the Subsumption Architecture that was popularized by Rodney Brooks and others several decades ago. The turtle is running from an Apple IIe. The IR emitter is connected to a Super Serial card in the IIe. It is running Apple Logo II and the Valiant Turtle Library software. The software is running from a CFFA3000 card inside the Apple IIe. The disk drives are not used.
The Penup/Pendown mechanism is slow and binds. The motor was cleaned and the gears were lubed, but it is intermittent at best. For this demo, the pen was lowered manually. I loaded a demo program that randomly presents binary numbers and then the user enters the decimal equivalent. If the value is correct, yes is shown on the LED display...if incorrect, no is displayed.
