In this empowering podcast, Tami Simon speaks with Erica about her groundbreaking book, "Releasing the Mother Load," and the practical steps mothers can take to challenge societal norms and change the culture surrounding modern motherhood.
Erica and Tami delve into crucial topics such as values-centered mothering, the pressures facing a generation of "overinformed, overeducated, and overwhelmed" moms, equally sharing household duties, the cost of cognitive or invisible labor, setting healthy boundaries, and using the "load map" to redistribute responsibilities. They also explore the roots of "mom rage" and the unique nature of anger in motherhood, strategies for overcoming perfectionism, the importance of self-compassion, and the transformative power of re-parenting yourself while raising your children.
Whether you're struggling with feelings of failure as a mom or seeking effective self-care practices that go beyond bubble baths, this discussion offers invaluable insights and advice for making small, impactful changes to reclaim your maternal well-being in a society that demands so much from mothers.

Contemporary spiritual teacher and author Rupert Spira believes that it’s the feeling of sufficiency, of ease, of peace—or the realization of our innermost nature as being. In this podcast that is at once expansive and experiential, Tami Simon speaks with Rupert about his book You Are the Happiness You Seek and the insights he has gleaned through a lifetime of spiritual exploration and practice.
Tune in for a liberating conversation covering the practice of pausing or “going back to being”; letting go of resistance and turning toward our unhappiness; bringing a complete “yes” to your current experience; the inquiry, who is the one that’s experiencing?; the pure “I Am”; the original ADD: Awareness Deficit Disorder; the problem with the word “enlightenment”; recognizing the gaps between our thoughts and feelings; why what happens to the body doesn’t happen to our being; the absolute level and the relative level; the practical implications of deepening our recognition of being; love: the felt sense of our shared being; freedom from “the tyranny of ego”; and more.

Throughout the discussion, Tami and William explore crucial concepts such as meeting animosity with curiosity, shifting perspective through the metaphor of the balcony, and the importance of self-observation. William shares his wisdom on how more silence leads to greater cooperation and the common pitfalls of the "3A trap": avoid, accommodate, or attack.
The conversation also delves into the link between creativity and conflict, the significance of listening over speaking in negotiation, and the art of reaching "second order agreement." William introduces the concept of creating a "golden bridge" across our divides, the notion of universal needs, and the powerful question, "What do you really want?"
Whether you're navigating personal relationships or professional challenges, this podcast offers essential tools and insights for cultivating humble audacity, bringing in the "third side," and the crucial role of reconciliation in resolving conflicts and creating possible outcomes.

Find Safety in Your Nervous System: bit.ly/3xxWp5T
Deb emphasizes the importance of simply noticing your breath without changing it, as this awareness alone can naturally alter the depth and pace of breathing. She introduces the concept of resistance breathing, such as blowing bubbles or through pursed lips, as a way to engage in a long, slow exhalation that promotes a neuroception of safety and calm.
The video also delves into the role of sighing as a spontaneous activity that can interrupt states of biology or thinking, bringing momentary change. Deb guides viewers through four types of sighs - despair, frustration, relief, and contentment - each with its unique effect on the nervous system. She encourages using sighing intentionally to partner with the nervous system and find a sense of safety, especially in moments of frustration or despair.
Whether you're seeking tools for personal well-being or are a practitioner looking to expand your understanding of Polyvagal Theory, this video offers valuable insights into harnessing the power of breath for grounding and regulation.
Deb’s clinical publications include The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy: Engaging the Rhythm of Regulation and the Polyvagal Flip Chart. Deb is delighted to partner with Sounds True to bring her polyvagal perspective to a general audience through Befriending Your Nervous System: Looking Through the Lens of Polyvagal Theory and her forthcoming book Anchored: How to Befriend Your Nervous System Using Polyvagal Theory.
