The Current State of ONE PIECE in 2024 Last Spot 2024-01-02 | In 2023, Eiichiro Oda’s life long series, One Piece officially became not just the highest selling manga of all time but it dethroned the Harry Potter books with over 500 million volumes worldwide, becoming the best selling fictional story series in recorded human history. The ONE PIECE Live Action is... GOOD!? Last Spot 2023-09-24 | Slight spoilers for events in the One Piece anime and manga past the Live Action. Ever Dragon Ball: Evolution first graced the big screens all the way back in 2009, the term Live Action Anime adaptation has always triggered a very vitriol reaction out of people, rightfully so. Evolution was a gross misunderstanding of the much beloved Dragon Ball source material, so horrible that it brought the series creator out of retirement just to spite it. The Last Airbender turned one of the best T.V. shows of all time into, quite possibly, a genuine contender for the worst movie ever made. Ghost In The Shell stripped one of the most thought provoking pieces of media ever made into a generic action movie with Scarlett Johansson for some reason. Death Note, my favorite anime of all time, got turned into the Death Note Live Action, no explanation needed there. And most egregious of all, Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop, this one I have a more personal attachment to. For years and years, I had been hearing inklings of news about the famed Live Action Cowboy Bebop. Casting lists, concept art, design sketches, and trailers were all information that slowly got me hyped up for this release. I mean come on if any anime would work in live action it’s gonna be Cowboy Bebop, I mean how could you possibly mess it up? It destroyed all my hope of ever being a good live action anime. So you can imagine my reaction when I finally forced myself to sit down and watch the live action adaptation of One Piece only to find out it’s actually… Good? Was the Chainsaw Man ANIME (Season 1) TRASH? Last Spot 2023-08-23 | Chainsaw Man blew all expectations out of the water, setting the Crunchyroll servers on fire because so many people were trying to watch the show not once but twice. If you weren’t a Chainsaw Man fan before, you were now because people wouldn’t shut up about it. This went on for 12 whole weeks till the final of Season 1 aired in late December, doing as much damage as humanly possible, pushing manga sales so high that Scientists had to invent new numbers for it, MAPPA had so much money that they funded the entirety of WW3, The President of the United States Joe Biden declared October 12th national Chainsaw Man day, world peace was achieved, Berserk finally got a good anime adaption, Bloodborne 2 released to critical acclaim, the third impact happened in real life, and I became the most subscribed channel on YouTube, the end. No of course none of that, unfortunately, happened. Contrary to what everyone thought was going to happen, Chainsaw Man, just kind of came and went. Pretty soon people began to refer to the CSM anime as overhyped, overrated, and the gravest of all accusations… mid. Some even began to blame Studio MAPPA, saying that they delivered a bad adaptation of the source material. MAPPA themselves seemed to believe so as well. As mentioned before, they had dumped a lot of money into Chainsaw Man expecting a massive payday. According to the CEO of MAPPA, the anime was a financial success but didn’t have the same “cultural impact” that he had hoped for. It didn’t cause a huge ripple effect like Jujutsu Kaisen or Demon Slayer did, it didn’t breathe new life into the industry by introducing thousands of new Anime fans, and most importantly the CEO couldn’t buy his 15th yacht and pay his workers properly, not that he was going to do the second one anyways. Ever since the anime finished airing I’ve always wondered what exactly caused it to not do as well as some of its other breakout anime contemporaries. DEMON SLAYER is awesome… Last Spot 2023-05-11 | On April 20, 2015, Gotouge Koyoharu published their 3rd one-shot Haeniwa no Zigzag, in shonen jump weekly magazine hoping that it would be picked up by Shonen Jump to be published as a regular series. Unfortunately, this didn’t happen as the one shot failed to gain any popularity or do anything to make readers want more. It sucks to have all of your hard work just flushed down the drain since you don’t really know what to do. Luckily Gotouge had their editor, Tatsuhiko Katayama, who suggested they write a simpler series with a more understandable theme. Borrowing some elements from an earlier one-shot by Gotouge, some inspiration from other famous jump series namely Bleach, Naruto, Gintama, and Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (no I’m not joking about that one). This birthed the series that we know and love today, Demon Slayer. Every Jojos Part Ranked From WORST to BEST I Jojos Bizarre Adventure Last Spot 2023-03-08 | Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is a series that has been around for an unbelievable amount of time, having started all the way back in 1987. Part of the reason it’s been around so long is not only the author Hirohiko Araki’s unwillingness to age but also his unwillingness to keep things the same. For those of you who don’t know, Jojo’s is a story that spans 9 different parts with each part having a new protagonist, new set of characters, new location, and almost new everything. JUJUTSU KAISEN is Something Special Last Spot 2023-02-23 | Ok… Jujutsu Kaisen is ok. Before you click off the video let me explain. This is what I thought the first time I had read through the series, in which I did so almost so begrudgingly. This was because I had a lot of friends telling me to catch up to the series, catch up to the series, it gets better keep reading, don’t worry the next arc is amazing. I kept reading it and I got all the way to the end of the series while never really enjoying it. I always thought it was a mediocre series with a cliche premise. I kept up with the series week to week never really thinking anything of it, until I decided to give it a second chance by re-reading it in its entirety. Strangely enough, my opinion on the series changed almost immediately. Jujutsu Kaisen is not “okay” or “mediocre”, it's freaking amazing. The best way to describe Jujutsu Kaisen to somebody who hasn’t read it is if Bleach and Chainsaw Man had a baby but Chainsaw Man left, leaving Bleach alone to raise it. Then one day Bleach fell in love with Hunter X Hunter and the two got married and Hunter Hunter raised Jujutsu Kaisen as if it were its own, always walking around with one of those “I’m not the step dad but the dad who stepped up” shirts. I know that probably made very little sense but everything I just said is, well, true. The author of JJK, Gege Akutami grew up being inspired by the series that defined past generations such as the aforementioned Bleach, Hunter X Hunter, Yu Yu Hakasho, Naruto, and Evangelion. I think that that’s why Jujutsu Kaisen feels fresh but also old in a way, as if it could have been serialized alongside all of these classics. Like I could stumble upon an old issue of Shonen Jump from the mid 2000s to see Ichigo and Itadori hanging out on the cover. It takes the best elements from all of these series and combines them into something not exactly unique but still does enough to feel like something brand new.
