This ended up being a pretty big grind, you need really good RNG with the enderman drops (they not only need to drop, but drop so that you can pick it up). Also to be fast enough you need to line up and throw the pearls fast. That combined with pearl throw rng makes the map really hard to complete.
Btw, yes this wool placement counts, in RFW you can place the objectives up to 2 blocks away from the intended spot.

Decided to finally come back to this old friend. Found some interesting new strats (mostly around the buttons in 3rd) which let me get a much better time than I even thought possible. 1026 total attempts to get this.
This run is super solid, only 4 very minor mistakes: Cake placement, taking some firetick damage in 2nd, last button on 1st bridge in 3rd, and slightly slow monument.
You can also save ~1.5s with luck by getting 8 glowstone dust, which lets you only bridge 10 instead of 11 on the last bridge in 3rd.

Mini and I have been in a 9 year long speedrun war on this map. ~2 months ago he beat my 6 year old 4:44 by 2 seconds (lmao). So I figured I would finally blow him out of the water once and for all.
The limericks are written by our friend Jack (Arahpthos). They are for an older route (my 4:56 video), but I was able to edit it down to mostly fit. If you enjoyed, please also go watch Mini's 4:42 (linked below) which has a rap Jack also wrote.
As far as the actual run, I routed out the death reset and added in some food glitch eating. Run is solid I guess, there's definitely still room for improvement but I'm pretty busy right now and want to get back to CTMs soon.

Further expiation on a couple tricks: Entity Punch: When you punch an entity the game doesn't think you are sprinting, which saves hunger. Found by Eliotex. Silk Touch Enchant Manip: There's a bug in version 1.8 that resets enchantment seed when going through the end portal. If you use Java 7 the enchantment seed you get reset to has silk touch. Pearl Hangs: In version 1.8 pearls get deleted when going into unloaded chunks. So to hang pearls you need to "juggle" them in lazy chunks, which is a 2 chunk border between fully loaded chunks and fully unloaded chunks. This is what causes all the pausing.

This run is played in 1.2.5, which is the version the map was released for, and the version the previous WR was played in. I played in this version to keep this consistency, and also because the map lags heavily in other versions.
However, 1.2.5 is a lot slower than other versions for many reasons, including no pearl deloads and no sprint key. I am also not very good with 1.2.5 mechanics, so my execution in this run is worse than most other runs. Also... please just ignore the monument, lmao.

There are 2 categories on this map, AutoRef and Vanilla. AutoRef is more restrictive - you have to play in 1.7 or 1.8, have to play with autoref, and have to play with the RFW ruleset which bans all exploits on this map. This run is in the vanilla category, where you can play on any version and only have to follow the map rules, which is essentially "get the wool from wool chests" and "don't leave your lane." So any exploits outside of that (including bedrock clipping and placing blocks in the void lane) is legal.

Thanks to the following: SchmidtSays for bed bridging, bed for 2nd wool, and fast kill in 2nd Qwuiblington for helping me understand new swimming mechanics
This is a category I made up where you aren't allowed to use pearls from enderman. This makes playing the map a lot more consistent and fun, in my opinion, because you don't have to reset for insane enderman luck.
For some reason I actually ended up grinding this a bit. Even though the splits I'm running against are essentially all gold splits for the first 4, the start still wasn't that great. The ending was really good though. This route could easily go sub-11:40 or even sub-11:30 in pre-1.9, which is pretty crazy.
I used another eating glitch this run where you drop food as soon as you stop eating and this lets you eat without sprint. It's a tick perfect trick but not too hard to get, plus you can usually keep trying until you are successful with very minimal timeloss. Apparently this trick has been known about for many years, we just re-discovered it thanks to Eliotex.

The most grueling grind I have ever endured. I kept choking endgames over and over and over again, for example this 11:24 I choked at monument youtu.be/BkGH7pMBIjA. I started to get more nervous at the end of runs and became a huge mental hurdle I had to get over. But I'm so glad I never quit and finally got my goal.
Honestly this run is pretty good, but not didn't have incredible execution or luck. Early game had a bit of mistakes, 2nd half of the run was very solid overall. Sub-11 is within reach with better enderman luck, but I'm going to stop the grind here.

Thanks to speedy for the map download (just positioned faster to start run)
Spellbound caves holds a special place in my heart because it was the first CTM map I ever played, and still one of my all-time favorite maps. Ever since I first started speedrunning minecraft 8+ years ago I always wanted to run this map, but only just got to it now. This run ended up being pretty good, but is still very improvable. I am going to look into some more optimizations and then do some more attempts, my ultimate goal is sub-12 or at least a low-12.
The route I used in this run ended up being pretty similar to previous WRs, with the exception of some slightly different deload spots, and the brand new "portal pearl" trick I used when exiting the nether. This trick was discovered by tell52 and involves landing a pearl a tick (.05s) before you go through the portal. You will still go through the portal, but because you are at different coordinates, you will go to the overworld at the pearl's coordinates instead of the portal. So effectively it's a way to build a new portal by using a pearl instead of obsidian.
To hit the 1 tick timing in the video, I used a tool called "flow timer." I set the timer to start as I back into the portal, and then I use an offset of 3618 (3.618 seconds) until a throw the pearl. I'd estimate I hit the trick in runs maybe 50% of the time, so it's definitely a big reset point.
Another small trick I use at the start the run is punching boats. This makes the game think I'm not sprinting even though I am, which saves a lot of hunger. We need to do the trick in order to make it to the first food chest. The trick was found by Eliotex and first implemented into runs by Japonk.
One final thing is that I played this run on version 1.8.9. The 2 previous records were played on 1.7.10. The versions are overall very similar to each other, but the big advantage 1.8.9 gives me is "dumb" mob AI which makes a big difference, since mobs often just don't aggro on me. It also makes enderman a lot easier to kill without them teleporting away. The disadvantages to 1.8.9 compared to 1.7.10 is that you can't eat while punching glass/sand, and you can't reliably double eat.

The most coveted CTM world record is now mine! Livestreamed on my twitch: twitch.tv/contranaut
So, about 6 weeks ago speedycube64 put out a $50 bounty for sub-30 Legendary, even though sub-30 wasn't possible with the previous WR route. Over the next month me and others worked to completely re-route the map from top to bottom. The first major change I made was playing on 1.16.1 instead of 1.7.10, which is what the previous WR used. The main reason for this is obviously to obtain pearls with bartering, but also on 1.16 you can deload pearls very easily, whereas on 1.7.10 you can only deload from far distances. 1.16 also has other advantages, such as faster swimming and boats, crouching for 1-tall tunnels, and tnt explosions give all blocks, which allows us to collect gold and diamond without a pick.
However, there is one big disadvantage to 1.16, which is that it takes a lot more xp to get to level 30, which is needed to get an efficiency 4 pick to mine obsidian for portals. The previous WR route mined a total of 64 obsidian. In order to make 1.16 faster, I decided to look into an enchantless, obiless route where we don't build any portals. We can make up a lot of the travel time using pearl deloads, but it requires getting 2 pearl barters with only ~21 gold, which is roughly only 25% chance. However, after testing I realized if we did get the luck we needed, this route was potentially way faster than the previous WR route, and could give us a chance at sub-30.
Then this run happened. I got the double pearl trades which was really lucky, and executed decently overall. Major timelosses include having to wait for the portal to light, slow bartering with only 1 piglin, falling in tacos, falling in starbright cavern, and catching on fire at VM. I think sub-30 is definitely within reach, but it's going to take quite the grind to get there.
Although I made most of this route on my own I did get a bit of help from others in the community:
jr5000 - For teaching me the mechanics behind portal relocation. This is the trick I do when I exit nether 22:33 into the run. Portal relocation/chaining is a very exiting new trick in CTM speedrunning that has potential to save time in many maps. Check out the explanation video jr made here youtu.be/Cz9B-P8-rmo
speedycube64 - For coming up with the idea to use portal relocation in the first place.
Japonk - For originally pursuing Legendary in 1.16, and coming up with the idea to go from shards to castle acedia using the map roof. Japonk is probably going to do some WR attempts using this new route, check out his youtube for streams: youtube.com/channel/UCQE7o4dTYkKcK_nE0oXsIXQ
SchmidtSays - For helping find ideal tnt placements for gold explosions.

Music in this run: youtu.be/NBasamSmpGoMountain Mayhem Speedrun in 4:51.333 (WR) by Ben/ContranautBen2022-03-02 | Way back in December 2013, I upload my first ever video to this channel, which was a 6:59 speedrun of this map. Now over 8 years later, I decided the first ever sub-5 on this map be the first on my channel with a facecam ;)
Somehow we keep finding ways to save time on this map. Major improvements from Oc's previous run are the shortcut from PvE to Parkour (saves 20-25 seconds), a more powerful iccarus out of parkour so you don't have to do any pillaring, and finally optimizing the path down the mountain from PvP wool to monument.
This run was pretty good but definitely could have been better. There's 4 semi major timelosses in the run, the block up just after PvE was slow due to fire tick, I missed the parkour wool grab, I was a little slow on the parkour iccarus, and the unfortunate fall into the pit right before VM iccarus. This run was only 5 seconds off my SOB (4:46), but in reality probably had closer to 8-10 seconds of mistakes and other timeloss.
Thanks to: Oc - for finding optimizations for climbing the mountain and running PvP wool that I used in this run, for making the autosplitter for RFW speedruns, and for motivating me to return to this map Aus - for helping with the block-up to mine the obsidian and for suggesting to inventory after getting out of the minecart Qwuiblington - for suggesting a better parkour iccarus as a possible time save Speedycube - For figuring out that you can shift on the vine jump to save a little time SchmidtSays- For putting a lot of time into helping to find a glitch to break the obsidian (we were never able to quite figure this out, but we are close... maybe one day) Qwuiblington, Japonk, and Jack for being in my chat during runs helping me stay sane.

Run was really solid, definitely what I was looking for. Enderpearl drop luck was excellent, and only other timelosses were the very 1st pearl at the snow island where I landed a little short, and getting stuck just after getting the snow record and having to use a minecart. Sub-3 IGT is definitely possible in theory, but you would need the god pearl luck.

My first every full CTM speedrun! This run had a lot of mistakes and some big timelosses, and I will be improving on it very soon. Will push for sub-20 if not sub-19 or sub-18. Watch at twitch.tv/contranaut.
Highlights in this run are definitely the 4-block bedrock clip (7:30) and the missed pearl in null nearly losing me the run (12:17).
RTA is ~21:22 but official timing takes out pauses in loads, hence 21:1X. I will improve this soon anyway so no reason to bother retiming.
Thanks to linstr for the wool number resource pack that helped with the monument placing a lot. Credit to Flow and Damian for their work routing the map, I used a lot of their route in my run.

The only real updates that are relevant for the run is that there is more food and 2nd is harder (I think he fixed some of the spawners?). This run was really well executed, only real mistakes was in the tunnel going from 3rd to 1st. The server also lagged for ~3 right before I picked up 2nd wool, so this run really should have been even faster.
This run I implemented "fast-looting" for the first time in my speedruns, which is a strategy to quickly get all the items out of a chest by shifting 1 item into your inventory, hotkeying it back, and then shift clicking again. This is especially useful where there are multiple stacks of 1 item, like in the chest at 2:22. I did fast-looting a total of 4 times in this run.
Other strat changes I made was doing 2nd before 3rd for reset efficiency, and I think that order is faster anyway. I found a cool strat where you place blocks coming out of 2nd and it saved time when you are running from 3rd to 1st. I also changed the end of the run with where I fall down from 1st. Otherwise the time I saved off my previous 3:25 was just execution.
Music is from this (~21 mins in) youtu.be/doTbtz0Rp9APlanet Practice Speedrun in 3:51.067 (WR) by Ben/ContranautBen2021-07-23 | I really outdid myself with this run.
So I originally played this category hoping to beat Mat and Jibbly's duo time of ~4:55. I came up with a really slick route to get the wool back to spawn after getting the touch, and after a couple hundred attempts got my time down to a 4:21. I thought about quitting but knew I could get a sub-4:15 if not even a sub-4:10. I slowly began to see that sub-4 was possible, but just required incredibly risky play and 100% focus to play at the top of my game. I began doing long attempt sessions with no voice chat and no music, something I have never done before for my speedruns. 3 weeks ago my grind finally paid off and I got a 4:05 on a nearly flawless run. I almost quit right there, but I saw some opportunities to introduce even more risks into the run, such as doing the last part of the run without any armor. Then I hit a wall where I just couldn't get anything for weeks and weeks. I decided to look into the mob vertical one more time and found a slight strat change to use ladders on the corner that really seemed to help. These past couple days I started getting run after run on-pace past the mob vertical. I got a 4:05 with 5 seconds lost to lag, then got a 4:00.50 that I was sure was sub-4 when I completed the run. Just before this run in the same session I had a run about 3 seconds faster that died to a creeper while retrieving the passaround. Then I had another sub-4 that missed the void passaround. Then I finally did it.
For the run itself, the beginning was great, but could have been even better with mob boosts. I dropped into the 2nd room about 2.5 seconds slower than my fastest pace to that point. The 2nd room was really great, very little mob spawns made it quick, although I also didn't get any mob boosts. After setting my spawn in the bed I was about 3 seconds slower than my fastest pace ever, so still a really really solid run. The 3rd room and lava was also fantastic. Climbing up the vert I was slowed down just a little by the cave spiders at the beginning and some skeletons at the top, but I also didn't get poisoned which saves a lot of time. Entering the final room I was probably just about tied with my best run pace ever from a run earlier that day. The ending sequence was the worst part of the run, had maybe 5 seconds or so of timeloss with bad block placements and having to wait for the creeper.
