In addition to producing a full line of precast concrete products, C.R. Barger and Sons is the licensed Stone Strong manufacturer for the state of Tennessee and supplier to surrounding areas.
Haven’t heard of Stone Strong? The Stone Strong retaining wall system is being used on a high profile project right here in East Tennessee! Stone Strong blocks are being used on the Federal Highways Foothills Parkway where the walls are approaching 50’ tall. The project will also have tiered walls approaching 70’ tall. The Stone Strong retaining walls are literally holding back the mountain!
Stone Strong has been approved by TDOT since 2009 for use as a concrete gravity wall product.
Now that you know the Stone Strong block can do the job, let’s look at how it stacks up against the competition. The three main advantages of the Stone Strong block is the increased gravity wall height with no tiebacks, the speed of installation resulting in schedule and labor savings, and built-in internal drainage. For walls under 12’, geogrid can often be eliminated during engineering design. We have found the Stone Strong block to be very competitive, especially when the finished wall cost is compared.
Stone Strong retaining wall systems allow an installer to set 24 sq. ft. of retaining wall in one block set! It takes the same amount of time to set one engineered retaining wall block, no matter the size; therefore, the installer can set more square feet of wall at a time, and the total number of blocks to set is significantly reduced. With its built-in alignment loops, Stone Strong blocks set quickly and interlock with an automatic 4” setback for every 3’ tall course. The block voids are filled with aggregate during install, providing additional connection strength. The top blocks have an angled front face so the backfill or finish landscaping can be pushed up to the front edge of the top block. Also, the void in the block allows for easy installation of fence sleeves to quickly install a fence at the top of the finished wall without coring.
Did you know the Stone Strong block can also be used for bridge abutments and wing walls.
We have a short informative project highlight video on our website from Midway Middle School where Stone Strong block was used to replace a failed retaining wall. This video shows highlights of the install from start to finish.
Let’s take a quick look at the standard block.
The 24 SF Block, the largest block face, has dimensions of 96"W x 36"H x 44” D. This block weighs 6000 lbs. The 6 SF Block has dimensions of 48"W x 18"H x 44” D. This block weighs 1,600 lbs. The 3 SF Block has dimensions of 24"W x 18"H x 44” D. This block weighs 800 lbs. The 24SF mass extender block is a specialty block used on the base course of taller walls to eliminate geogrid. The dimensions of the mass extender block are 96"W x 36"H x 56” D. This block weighs 10,000 lbs.
Stone Strong’s photos give a great representation of the many uses of the Stone Strong block and prove the Stone Strong block creates a strong and aesthetic retaining wall, easily fitting into any landscape.
We provide engineering design services and work closely with lead engineers, geotech engineers, installers and owners to ensure we optimize the wall design to create a successful project at a competitive price. For local jobs, we also provide on-site technical support as needed to get an installer started and have done aerial video and photography to document jobs.

A Stone Strong replacement for a failing cinder block wall halts erosion and beautifies the shoreline on Watts Bar Lake in Kingston, Tennessee
Life on a lake can be filled with simple pleasures. That’s certainly the case on Watts Bar Lake near Kingston, Tennessee. Looking out from his house on the hill above the lake, Butch Clark might spy an eagle cruising above the water in search of a meal, or he might watch as a pontoon boat chugs along the busy channel in front of his property.
Lately, he’s noticing something else, too. Bigger leisure boats designed to stir up maximum wave action for wake boarding. The churn from those wave runners sends water lapping up to the shoreline with increasing intensity. It’s an issue for some homeowners on Watts Bar Lake, but not for Clark since he replaced a crumbling cinder block sea wall with a new Stone Strong retaining wall system.bargerandsons Live StreamBarger Precast2019-04-11 | ...Residential Stone Strong Retaining Wall ConstructionBarger Precast2017-08-08 | https://www.StoneStrongTN.com
Whether your home is in a subdivision or in the country, Stone Strong retaining wall blocks provide a safe, reliable and long-lasting wall to easily fit into any landscape.
The base leveling pad is quickly excavated and filled with stone. Then, the contractor can start setting the base course, being sure to check level throughout the process. A level base course is one of the most important aspects of installing a block retaining wall.
To meet project schedule, Barger and Sons will work with the contractor and deliver the block to the jobsite. The standard 24 square foot face block weighs 6,000 pounds.
After the base course is set and level, the next course easily stacks using the built-in alignment loops with an automatic 4 inch setback for every 3 feet of vertical height. The bottom of the blocks have a notch to easily install a 4” drain pipe. Depending on the site conditions and access, the excavation can be performed all at once or in sections. This wall was stacked to a 9 foot height without the use of geogrid. This saved the homeowner in excavation and backfill. Using a Stone Strong wall allowed the homeowner to extend the backyard and increase usable outdoor space.
Stone Strong blocks have an internal void that is filled with stone during install. This addition of stone, increases the connection strength of the wall and acts as built-in internal drainage. Prior to filling the block void with stone, PVC pipe fence sleeves are installed in the top course to allow for easy fence installation after the wall is complete.
The end of this Stone Strong wall was finished with corner block and topped with a white vinyl fence. Other fence types could include wrought iron, ornamental or chain link.
The top of the wall can be finished off to the front edge of the top block with dirt, grass, landscaping, mulch, concrete or other material.
