Video 1: Young male Sparrowhawk catches a Starling on a roof terrace in West London - graphic Andrew Hall 2024-04-28 | This is the first of three recordings made through a window during rain of a Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) which caught a Starling (Sternus vulgaris) on my third floor terrace in West London. Sorry about the heavy breathing, but I had just run down stairs to get my video camera, and it was amazing to be so close. I have a Peregrine twice try to catch a pigeon, which feed on the seeds dropped from my bird feeders by Goldfinches, but this is the first Sparrowhawk. I watched from a distance of about 3 metres through a wet pane of glass in the door to my terrace. It's not a video for the squeamish.
Writers in the Region 6: Annie Dalton talks to J.L. Carr Andrew Hall 2023-12-05 | A video recorded on VHS tape in about 1988 in the 'Writers in the Region' series of East Midlands Arts, now defunct. It's the second half of No 6 in the series in which the writer Annie Dalton interviews the author J.L. Carr. The interview takes place in the garden of Carr's house in Kettering and he reads a passage from 'A Month in the Country' standing in the graveyard of the Church of St. Faith at Newton, which was the model in structure for the church at Oxgodby in the novel. I found a copy of the VHS video and had it digitised. I have uploaded it here for people who love the work of J.L. Carr to see. I tried to find the successor to East Midlands Arts to ask for permission, but was unsuccessful.

Sparrowhawk on the terrace of a flat in Fulham, London Andrew Hall 2022-04-24 | This young Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) had killed and eaten a Starling on my terrace a few weeks ago and presumably was back to try again after I had filled the bird feeder behind him with tubes of suet and dried mealworms, which I do every morning at about 7:30 am. He stayed a while at 8:30 on a Sunday morning. A pigeon landed behind him and walked around but he didn't seem interested. The pigeon eventually spotted the Sparrowhark and flew off. I filmed him on a Canon G15 through a pane of glass in the door to my terrace from a distance of about 3 metres away.
