BlessWinter Blue -The Cupcakes / The Cookies Jan 65Rowland1082013-01-30 | Ritchie Cordell tune released as B side of Pied Piper on 23 Jan '65, Diamond Records Inc whose office was across street from Brill Bldg NY. I don't know which girls sang on this but Earl Jean quit music biz late '64 & her older sis, (Ethel) Darlene had quit Ray Charles Raelets in May 64 while on tour in UK in disgust at Ray's sacking of his long term girlfriend, Margie Hendricks who he'd earlier got onto heroin. Russ Titleman says he & Darlene were an item for 6 months in '64 sharing apptment with Earl Jean in E Orange, NJ. So I put in some pics of Darlene - an original Cookie in the 50s, then an original Raelet thru to '64, then had couple of solo singles. She's also on last Cookies release Wounded and sang on Bachs Lunch 'You Go On' in '67 (Carole King produced). Margaret Ross sings this 1967 Warner Brothers 45 & is on right in pics of them on stage with Dorothy on right & Earl-Jean (had be replaced by her sis Darlene on this) in the centre. Based on a Bahamian lullaby & tells the story of a mother on her death bed, comforting her children, "Hush little baby, don't you cry./You know your mama's bound to die," Because, "All my trials, Lord, soon be over." The message — that no matter how bleak the situation, the struggle would "soon be over" — propelled the song to the status of an anthem, recorded by many of the leading artists of the era. One of the most prolific recording artists of the gramophone's early days. Kirkby's typical payment for a session was the then-astronomical £90 for six titles in a three-hour session, something that the singer could do without breaking sweat. This was just slightly less than a skilled printer's annual wage at this time. In his memoirs, recording engineer Joe Batten recalled Kirkby's productivity: 'This was before the days of exclusive contracts and royalty payments. Stanley was a freelance and he was doing similar work at much the same payment with other companies, probably three a week..He had the finest recording voice of all the artistes I have heard in recording studios. It was a pure baritone. His diction was perfect, and he had a versatility in interpretation that distinguished him from all others.'." i've added some contemporary sheet music - some seem offensive nowadays but I put 'em up for interest. The girls were in the UK from June to September 1939 & I believe this was recorded in the UK, possibly with The Jack Harris Band who were headliners at The London Palladium where the girls were on the same show. Leonard Feather, the jazz critic saw the show, met them and got infatuated & began an affair with Vivian, maybe he had a role in getting the recording done. Don Bogle says Vivian had the lowest voice and I believe she's singing the solo part. This recording and tune aren't usually listed as done by The Dandridge Sisters. Walk & Talk - Bedasse singing with the Calypso Quintet on Kalypso Records XX01. Jamaica Mento Music from the early 50's. Alerth Bedasse & Everard Williams were street performers down by Coronation Market in Kingstown Jamaica when Everard composed this & Night Food in 1952. Noone would record Night Food as it was seen as too suggestive at the time. Finally a guy named Stanford recorded it and it sold like widfire. Then Mr Chin picked it up & it was the 1st record on his Kalypso Record label. This Mento music predates bluebeat & ska. Many years later Nora Dean covered Night Food. Night Food was later covered by Nora Dean. In a interview Alerth Bedasse said he and Everard Williams were street performers at the corner of Oxford St and Spanish Town Rd near Coronation Market in Kingstown Jamaica. "Everard composed the song.... In 1952 but nobody would produce the record....eventually a guy named Stanford recorded it at Stanley Motta's studio. It gained momentum and sold like widfire. Every dance you go Night Food would play 10 times. Finally Mr Chin....gave us a contract....Ken Khouri distributed it and we got about £18 for both of us."
