Welcome to this week’s featured knot: the Square Knot, also known as the Reef Knot! This essential binding knot is part of the foundational skills taught in Knot School and is ideal for beginners learning how to tie knots.
In this step-by-step tutorial, you’ll learn exactly how to tie the Square Knot correctly:
➡️ Right over left and under, then left over right and under – finish by pulling the standing ends to tighten.
⚠️ Be careful not to create the Granny Knot, which results from tying both half knots in the same direction and is far less secure.
The Square Knot is simple, fast, and widely used in:
🩹 First aid (tying bandages)
⛵ Boating and sailing
🏕️ Camping and outdoor activities
🏡 Home and garden tasks
However, it's important to understand its limitations. The square knot is unreliable under heavy or shifting loads, and it can slip on synthetic ropes like nylon and polypropylene. For safely joining two ropes under tension, consider more secure alternatives like the Fisherman’s Knot.
This knot is listed in the Ashley Book of Knots (#1,42) and remains a popular choice for quick, non-critical binding tasks. A properly tied Square Knot is symmetrical and lies flat—so take time to practice and build your skill.

In the video, Jason clearly outlines the difference between the Cow Hitch and the Girth Hitch—two knots that are often confused due to their similar appearance. While both share the same structure, their applications differ. The Cow Hitch crosses under the standing parts and is best used on objects, while the Girth Hitch crosses over and is meant for tying around body parts like a wrist or waist, reducing chafing or injury. This distinction is especially important in sensitive settings such as the equestrian world, where tying equipment incorrectly could harm valuable animals. Understanding this nuance is crucial for anyone working with ropes in either practical or professional environments.
Jason demonstrates two primary methods to tie the Cow Hitch, making this beginner knot tutorial easy to follow regardless of rope length. The first method uses a bight to create the loop and pull through the standing ends—ideal for short ropes. The second method is better for longer ropes, where the working end wraps around the anchor before being tucked through the loop. The knot is widely used in boating, climbing, arboriculture, camping, and even home and garden applications, where a secure yet temporary connection is needed. However, viewers are cautioned that if tension isn’t applied evenly to both standing parts, the knot can slip—this is where the Pedigree Cow Hitch comes in, offering extra security with a simple adjustment.
For those ready to take their knot-tying skills to the next level, Jason recommends exploring additional content through Knot School. The Cow Hitch is even featured in the authoritative Ashley Book of Knots as knot #1,673. With its wide range of applications and simple structure, the Cow Hitch remains a foundational knot for any enthusiast or professional. Whether you're learning hitch knots for beginners, practicing knot tying techniques, or diving into decorative knots tutorials, this week’s episode provides clear instruction and valuable insight that will help you build confidence with rope and cord.

As I demonstrate in the video, tying the figure eight is straightforward. I start by making a loop near the end of the rope. Then I take the working end, pass it around the standing part, and feed it through the original loop. Once I pull it tight, the result is a neat, symmetrical knot that holds firmly in place. I love how versatile this knot is—it’s used in climbing, arborist work, sailing, camping, and even everyday tasks at home. And it’s not just a knot on its own; it serves as a foundation for many others, like the figure 8 loop, the figure 8 bend, and even the one-way knot.
That said, I always caution folks to consider the rope material they’re working with. The figure eight holds well in natural fiber ropes, but when it comes to synthetic ropes like nylon or Spectra, it can slip or become very difficult to untie after heavy strain. This knot is even officially recognized in the Ashley Book of Knots (knot #520 on page 85), which adds to its credibility and historical significance. If you're just starting out or looking to expand your knot-tying skills, I encourage you to check out Knot School. With a free 14-day trial, it’s a great way to access detailed tutorials and join a community that loves knots as much as I do.

#Knots
The Half Hitch is a simple yet essential knot that is often underestimated due to its ease of tying. Despite its simplicity, it serves as the backbone for more complex and secure knots, making it a crucial skill for both beginners and experienced rope handlers.
The Half Hitch falls under the category of hitch knots, which are used to attach a rope to a fixed object or to another rope. Although it doesn't go by any alternate names, it shares structural similarities with the Half Knot and acts as a foundation for other common knots like the Two Half Hitches and the Round Turn and Two Half Hitches. These knots offer more security and holding power, often required in practical applications. The Half Hitch itself is not typically used on its own for critical tasks, as it has limited holding power and can slip when placed under strain. However, it becomes significantly more effective when paired with other knots or used in multiples.
To tie a Half Hitch, you simply take the working end of the rope, pass it around the object or the standing part of another rope, then loop it under and through itself before pulling it tight. Dressing the knot—arranging it neatly and properly—is important, especially when tying around wider or irregularly shaped objects. The knot’s versatility makes it popular across various fields such as arborist, camping, sailing, and even home or garden tasks, wherever a quick and temporary rope hold is needed.
While the Half Hitch performs adequately with different rope materials, its main limitation is slippage when under load, which is why it’s rarely trusted alone for securing valuable or heavy items. For reference, the Half Hitch is listed as knot number 50 on page 14 of the Ashley Book of Knots, one of the most respected knotting guides in the world.
The video closes by encouraging viewers to join Knot School, which offers a deep dive into knotting skills through expert-led tutorials, a growing resource library, and community support—all available with a 14-day free trial and a $6/month subscription.

The video is part of the Knot of the Week series and serves as an excerpt from the curriculum at KnotSkool. This episode focuses on the Sheet Bend Knot, which is widely taught in outdoor programs such as the Scouts and in sailing courses due to its practicality and ease of use. The knot is sometimes referred to as the Weaver’s Knot or Becket Bend, though the latter term is incorrect, as the Becket Hitch is a separate knot belonging to the hitch category. Despite its simple structure, the Sheet Bend shares similarities with other knots, including the Double Sheet Bend, Bowline Loop Knot, and Becket Hitch.
The Sheet Bend is particularly useful when tying two ropes of unequal diameter, as this setup creates a more stable knot. It has broad applications, making it a valuable tool in boating, sailing, camping, climbing, and even home and garden tasks. However, one of its main weaknesses is that it can slip under certain conditions. To address this, the Double Sheet Bend provides a more secure variation by adding an extra wrap, preventing slippage while maintaining the knot’s ease of tying.
How to Tie a Sheet Bend:
Form a bight with the thicker rope.
Pass the thinner rope through the bight from below.
Wrap it around the bight in the same direction as the tail of the first rope.
Pass it under itself, then dress and cinch the knot.
Another way to tie the Sheet Bend involves starting with a slip knot in one rope, then passing the second rope through the loop and deliberately capsizing the slip knot. The knot is cataloged in The Ashley Book of Knots as #1, #66, and #485, reinforcing its historical significance. For those looking to improve their knot-tying skills, Knot School offers a structured learning experience and a community for knot enthusiasts.

The most common way to tie the Bowline follows the well-known mnemonic: "The rabbit comes out of the hole, goes around the tree, and back into the hole." A faster method involves tying it with one hand by positioning the working end between the index and middle fingers and tracing the knot’s path. Another alternative method starts with a noose, passing the tail through the loop before cinching it to form the Bowline. This knot is widely used in boating, sailing, climbing, arboriculture, camping, and various home applications. However, despite its excellent reputation, the Bowline can slip, especially when tied in modern synthetic ropes like Dyneema or Spectra or when not under constant load. To prevent this, adding a backup knot, such as a half hitch, helps secure it. The Bowline is referenced multiple times in The Ashley Book of Knots, and those interested in learning more about knot-tying can find additional resources through Knot School.

Among hitch knots, the half hitch and its variations, including the slippery half hitch, clove hitch, and round turn and two half hitches, secure ropes to objects with varying degrees of stability. The rolling hitch and taut-line hitch provide adjustable tension. For stronger bindings, the constrictor knot is highly secure but difficult to untie, while the cow hitch and its reinforced forms, such as the Pedigree Cow Hitch and Lobster Boy Hitch, offer more versatility. The sheet bend and Zeppelin bend are key bend knots for securely joining two ropes, with the double sheet bend adding extra security.
For loop knots, the bowline and its variations, including the Eskimo bowline and Yosemite bowline, create reliable fixed loops, while the overhand loop and figure-eight loop provide alternative options. The butterfly loop is particularly useful for midline loops. Other joining methods include the overhand bend, fisherman’s knot, Ashley bend, and water knot, each offering different levels of security and ease of untying.

Demonstrate how to tie a Clove Hitch knot step by step, ideal for beginners. Show different uses of this knot in various crafts or activities like macrame.
00:00 - 00:20 The Clove Hitch is a simple, ancient hitch knot, ideal for temporarily attaching a rope to an anchor point like a ring, post, or rail but prone to slipping if used to tie rope to rope.
00:20 - 01:45 It is a foundational knot, used in other knots such as the Buntline Hitch, Rolling Hitch, and Constrictor Knot.
01:45 - 02:00 To tie the Clove Hitch, make two turns around the anchor point, cross the standing part, feed the working end under the turn, and tighten the knot.
02:00 - 03:00 The knot is commonly used in boating, sailing, climbing, camping, and home tasks; it can be made more secure by adding an extra turn or tying a rolling hitch.
