Robbie Sherratt & Niles Krieger - Uriahs Polska // Live at The Sage, Gateshead Robbie Sherratt 2018-12-20 | When researching material from the Staffordshire Moorlands for my debut album Provenance, I came across West Gallery composer and choir leader Uriah Davenport (c.1690 - 1784). The melody played here by myself and Niles was the tenor part Davenport wrote for Psalm CXIX. It can be heard on track 9 'Chapel in the Wilderness' of 'Provenance' followed by a waltz derived from the soprano part of the same psalm. A couple of years ago in Finland, I learnt to dance the masurkka which quickly became my favourite tune type. When looking for a mazurka from England I found this one by Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934). I edited it a little to make it fit for dancing and presented it to Finnish fiddler Esko Järvelä, he suggested preceding it with a masurkka played by his great uncle Elias Kentala (1909-1958.)I'm accompanied here by the wonderful Sam Partridge (harmonium) and Niles Krieger (fiddle).robbiesherratt.com
