Shin Megami Tensei V: In the Absence of God || SMTheology Kid Capes 2023-05-09 | On the 20th of July, 2020, the gaming community received its first clear look at the upcoming title, Shin Megami Tensei V, via a new trailer. The teaser starts off strong, showing a cutscene featuring the demon lord Lucifer boldly proclaiming “The God you worship is dead.” Now, this wasn’t something totally out of bounds in previous mainline SMT games. The Abrahamic God, YHVH, is referenced in many of those games, in some of them you can even kill him yourself, but still he’s generally presented as a pretty strong guy. Among some fans, he’s even considered the final boss of the whole MegaTen franchise. While I don’t think that’s the authorial intent, there is something to be said about his prominence in the series to make someone think that in the first place. I mean, of course, he’s God, right? So why is he not around now in SMTV? This must have been a deliberate choice by ATLUS, but what does it mean for the game’s narrative? Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei by Aya Nishitani (Audiobook w/ Visuals) Kid Capes 2023-03-31 | Before Persona, Devil Summoner, or even Shin Megami Tensei there was the Digital Devil Story. The original Megami Tensei (Reincarnation of the Goddess) novel was released on March 31st, 1986 by the author Aya Nishitani. The story centered around a highschool genius named Nakajima Akemi who was bullied by his classmates which led him to summon demons to enact his revenge on the school. He allies himself with the ancient god Loki, but soon finds himself in a situation he had never imagined. In the midst of his terror, he discovers that he and his classmate Shirasagi Yumiko are the reincarnations of the Japanese deities Izanagi and Izanami. Together, they have to figure out a way to stop the demons from taking over the world. This video’s script is based on the fan translation by MeNaSe Publications, and was slightly edited due to the nature of adapting a book into another medium.
