Particular challenges have been overcome resolving tandem repeats – dynamic sections of DNA that are sequentially copied and can be thousands of base pairs different in length amongst individuals, including in coding exons. Large scale sequencing efforts of DNA from population biobanks has enabled integration between genetic variants and disease phenotypes. In this presentation we reveal how biobank data analysis from diverse populations uncovers phenotypes associated with genetic variants and tandem repeat expansions as a function of genetic ancestry.
After viewing this lecture, participants should be able to: 1. Integrate population-scale biobank phenotype data with genetic risk variants. 2. Utilize long-read sequencing to identify disease-relevant tandem repeat expansions. 3. Develop new genotype to phenotype tools and resources.

An incumbent President chose not to run again, hobbled politically by an escalating and increasingly unwinnable overseas war. Inner-city neighborhoods were in flames, protests rocked college campuses, and assassins' bullets felled iconic leaders. The tensions between the political establishment and the youthful counterculture erupted violently at the Democratic convention, helping set up a landslide Republican victory in November by a candidate whose political career seemed finished only a few years before. In 1968, the foundations were laid for today's red and blue state America. Lynn M. Thomas, Professor and Chair, UW Department of History John M. The two major candidates offered voters very different solutions to the crisis. President Herbert Hoover argued that government's role was to encourage business to fix itself, while his challenger Franklin Roosevelt declared that bold government action was the only way to restore prosperity. Voters agreed, and Roosevelt — and his vision of a "New Deal" with the American people — won, fundamentally changing the relationship between citizens and the state. Lynn M. Findlay Margaret Pugh O'Mara, Associate Professor, UW Department of History 10/17/20121992 New Economy, New Media, and the New World OrderUW Video2024-08-19 | The end of the Cold War, the high-technology revolution, and the cultural transformations of the post-civil-rights era had profound political effects that reverberated through the 1992 election. Riding high after the success of the Gulf War, incumbent George H.W. Bush seemed at first to be a sure bet for reelection, but a souring economy changed the electoral math. After a series of failed Democratic campaigns for the White House in which "liberal" became a dirty word, Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton ran as a centrist "New Democrat," espousing policies like welfare reform and government efficiency. But the election — and Clinton's ultimate victory — hinged on the insurgent third-party candidacy of the businessman H. Ross Perot, whose campaign reflected the growing power of the independent voter and the new ways to communicate in the Information Age. Lynn M. Findlay Margaret Pugh O'Mara, Associate Professor, UW Department of History 10/30/20121912: Bull Moosers, Socialists, and the Election that Changed AmericaUW Video2024-08-19 | How much should the government do to curb the power of corporate capital? What restrictions should America place on foreign immigration? How should the nation respond to poverty and income inequality? Should the US be involved in foreign wars? All of these questions drove the extraordinary four-way race of 1912 between a Democrat, a Republican, a Socialist, and a former President — Teddy Roosevelt — who split from his party to run as an insurgent reformer. The results shifted the political balance of power and opened up new debates about the relationship between government and business, rich and poor, and America and the world.
