July 15, 2013: Thousands March for #TrayvonMartin in NYC Union Square to the Bronx Supreme Court OccupyTVNY 2013-07-18 | Sunday, July 15, the day after George Zimmerman was found not guilty in the slaying of Trayvon Martin, thousands in New York City rallied and marched from Union Square to the Bronx and back to Harlem. I joined the march just as it left Union Square at 7pm and stayed with it until 2:30 am. For most of the time, the protest commanded control of whatever streets it took, and police avoided making arrests. This suddenly ended as the march moved into the Upper East Side, when police made several arrests, used pepper spray, and divided the march into several groups. Nonetheless, many continued marching to Harlem and the Bronx, and many more joined the protest along the way. We were told this was a press conference, though there was no other media there, just the camera crew apparently working with the campaign. So we set up our camera and asked a few questions about the recent high-profile police killings, including Kimani Gray. The "press conference" was brought to a hasty end, but we continued to ask questions of Hynes, Adams and his aides. Simmering tensions between the RCP and #BrooklynProtest organizers exploded at the rally and subsequent march, ignited by the RCP's selling their newspaper, Bob Avakian videos, and T-shirts.The nearly hour-long series of speakouts was dominated by RCP members, to the visible annoyance of #BrooklynProtest regulars. NYPD bans cameras from frozen zone in East Flatbush #BrooklynProtest 3.13.13 OccupyTVNY 2013-03-22 | March 13, Brooklyn, NY: After a tiny piece of masonry is thrown into the flanks of police on Church Avenue, police charge the crowd, give a dispersal order, and kettle and arrest the remaining protesters. Police declare the area a "frozen zone" and declare the authority to allow only journalists with police-approved press passes on the scene. Journalists are ushered to a confined area with poor views of the arrests. I ignore this order for as long as I get away with it, but after taping four arrests I am personally ordered to move. D-15: Restore Power to the People OccupyTVNY 2012-12-21 | D:15 March in the Rockaways, where citizens, activists and community leaders demand change from the government and take charge themselves.Two months after Superstorm Sandy the disaster is not over and relief needs are still great. Homes are uninhabitable with black mold taking hold, heat and electricity are still absent in many places. Yet the government response has been glaringly absent. As with Katrina and other recent disaster-and-recovery events city, state and federal agencies have handed off reconstruction resources and responsibility to corporations and markets. That hand-off has pushed affected people further out of their communities, further into crisis and vulnerability, and further from the decision-making tables that allocate public resources. Where government has failed, Occupy and other groups stepped in. But we now understand that climate change has turned a corner: we will be hard hit again by extreme weather events. And so we ask whose interests our government serves? Is it polluters, predatory lenders, and disaster profiteers? Or can we build a stronger, better, resilient New York where all of us, regardless of race, class or power, can weather future storms?
