Modular synth + Pedal & rack FX & instrument input // DPW Design Pedal InterfaceDivKid2024-05-07 | I've always enjoyed integrating other gear beyond the realms of the Eurorack case. Synths and FX, guitar into modular, rack gear processing beats ... it's a great thing to explore, to find unique tones and new sounds.
The new Pedal Interface from DPW Design is a 4HP stereo or dual mono pedal/instrument input and output module. While it couldn't be simpler on the interface this was designed to address two issues and to improve working with the varied signals. DPW made sure to properly impedance balance so you're not sucking out the tone and brilliance in the signal and sought to address transient handling and add a tube inspired gain structure above the clean gain structure for adding tube like compression and saturation FX ... something we exploit for great distortion in the video!

twitter.com/divkid facebook.com/DivKidmusic http://www.divkidmodular.comA harsh & funky take on an additive oscillator // Octaves VCO from BefacoDivKid2024-03-28 | Here we have what Befaco say is "a harsh and funky take on an additive oscillator" as it has individual harmonics or partials and VCAs to modulate them. However the idea of harmonics here is replaced with 6 octaves of square waves. It's an analog design with a triangle core oscillator that through frequency doublers give 6 octaves to work with, each turned into squares that respond to PWM. An onboard mixer allows for blending these squares, you can break out into new tones with self patching, or make multi-layered wide frequency spanning voices from the individual outs.

Here's a video with some of the people at the London Synth & Pedal Expo 2024. Held over this past weekend (Saturday and Sunday the 16th+17th of March 2024) in Studio 9294 in Hackney Wick, the London Synth & Pedal Expo is a free to attend show with plenty of synths, modular and pedal FX on show for people to come and play with.
As it takes good people to make good events (and the good gear we love) I wanted to focus on the people, asking who they are and what they do, more specifically how would they explain what they do to someone with no idea about synths, pedals and music tech. That led to some funny answers, all spread around various bits of b roll and footage from the event.

This is a Pedals & Patches series video where I explore pedal FX with modular gear, synths and in the studio for creative use cases and musical applications. With these we have spring reverb on fifthy synths, on claps for dub style beats, creating ghoulish metallic drones and retro organ stabs. The Chorus Vibrato creates some ridiculous thick synth tones for a bass guitar, adds some tasty wonk to modular synth riffs and gives warm cuddly nostalgia flavour to a guitar. It's a small 2hp module that can work like an expander for any oscillator you want to use it with. There's two inputs giving you two octaves of sub oscillators (-1 and -2), ring modulation, a noise source and thru outputs to save multiples or stacking cables to keep patching with your inputs.
Here's what Takaab have to say "VCO’s Little Helper is a eurorack module that supercharges your existing oscillators by adding a ring mod, sub and noise. The VLH was designed in collaboration with journalist and musician Steve O'Hear following a conversation asking how we could squeeze the features found in the VCO section of many vintage synthesizers into a eurorack system."

VCV Random is a Eurorack hardware version of the VCV Rack Random software module. It's a flexible and modulate-able multi output random generator with some novel features, namely, a step shape control that adds increasing numbers of steps between random values and a 'RND' crossfade control that crossfades the sampling of internal noise and the output. The latter resulting in a unique way to control voltage changes per step and one that can modulate over time.

Otterley. It's a multi output (5 to be specific) LFO with a flexible feature set for varied modulation across your patches.
The first 4 outputs can be sines or squares and feature global controls and modulation for speed (frequency) and also the spread of rates between the LFOs. You can scale these from -10V to 0V, -5V to +5V or 0V to +10V outputs. There's then a final fifth LFO that's individually speed controlled and always a sine wave.

I'm always striving to learn and explore with sound and music and dapf (the new Eurorack module from Instruo) certainly brought a big slap of school day into DivKid HQ. I was aware of all pass filters, getting past the funny idea that "all" frequencies pass (so what's the point?) and knowing they were use for phase shifts. What I didn't know is how core and important to filter topologies they were and how creatively useful they could be.
Some exploring later and here we are, with 3 patches that really show the power of phase manipulation. While dapf makes a fantastically chewy phaser FX unit I didn't expect it would be such a great stereo expander for a single VCO nor did I know I could be MUSICAL and totally analogue 3 operator FM/PM (like the digital Yamaha DX and Casio CZ phase/FM methods) synth.

First, it makes for a great distortion, how many distortions are A) stereo and B) have a 3 band EQ? Second it's a flexible routing for building modulate-able send FX to add to your sounds and mixers. The Golden Master from Endorphines builds on inspiration from classic ‘90s mastering rack units and their experiences with live performances with synths & modular and puts together a box of multi band compression, EQ and multi band stereo mid/side based stereo enhancement.
This pedal version offers presets, sidechain or expression pedal inputs, stereo ins and outs, per band mutes (handy for setting up each band but also as a performative frequency dependent set of mutes!) and parallel processing (i.e. dry/wet mixing) options.
This is the first fulsome PEDALS & PATCHES video. Guitar pedals were the first bit of gear to really catch my eye many moons ago so I’m looking forward to exploring them in a creative way and sharing that with you.

Dwyfor Tech are a new company who have taken inspiration from what has been said to be a "forgettable" Buchla filter circuit, smashed that into a Korg MS-50 diode ring for a resonance path and masses of lovely guitar pedal style overdrive and they've made that a Eurorack filter with bags of character, and a different tone and circuit design (it's really multiple high shelf EQs).

I brought this case and exact patch back from my journey up to Glasgow for the OCHD-OBER-FEST live event with Instruo in Signal Sounds. We launched the ochd expander at that event and this patch was my demo for that event. Note - you can check out the live event re uploaded and editing in 4k below.
This is patch is a 4 voice, polyphonic generative ambient piece that uses 4 wavetable oscillators into 4 VCAs for heavily modulated chordal sound sources. That is then tone, drive and level modulated before feeding two FX with a novel patch routing. It's highly dynamic, from near silent quiet sections to loud sections. All that dynamism comes from ochd and the ochd expander.

It's very much still a prototype with updates already in place (beyond what I have here) and new ideas to be implemented as well.
NONO Modular have been in the Eurorack space for years with their cases (see those here http://nonomodular.com) but this is an impressive entry into the module space. Major Tom is 4 channel gate & CV sequencer with a unique polyrhythmic approach that places a 8th note triplet grid over a 16th note grid and allows you to sequence across both easily. There's also switchable variations per part, gate fragments, dynamic gate adjustments and plenty more.
If you're interest there's details and backing options on Kickstarter here // http://bit.ly/KickMajTom
**NOTE //** while I'm just making beats here, you could be using this for melodies, riffs and basslines or even 4 voice polyphonic work. These are just the things my quick playing led to.

In modular you often need more, and not particularly more variety, but more of the same functions to push creativity and deeper levels of patching.
Atlas is a set of 4 multimode filters (low pass, high pass, band pass), with clever normalisations, dual modulation inputs per channel, a ‘classic synths of Japan in the 80s’ inspired sound PLUS you get an interpolating scanner bank that will morph between the four filter outputs. It’s an impressive thing that’s been a delight to play and patch with.
As always I hope the video provides you patches to explore Atlas and other filters and functions in your own systems.

It's been a pleasure to make 100s of sounds and patches and to be able to share those with you all here. I mentioned in the video that I've written about what's coming in 2024, new series, new ideas, changes, old ideas brought back from the dead. Check that out below.

**More DivKid - same great taste!** Across this year you'll be getting plenty of the DivKid you know and love (hate or whatever). While there's new additions and ideas to bring to the channel these are very much extras added in, new toppings with sprinkles for the channel. These things won't replace or side step what I've been doing over the years
**New DivKid Modules** Several new DivKid modules will release this year, whooo! The first one isn't too far into the future and the second I'm hoping isn't that far behind it. I'm pleased to say some new things will be with companies I've already collaborated with, others with new (new to DivKid collabs) companies too.
**Pedals and Patches** Pedals and Patches is a new video series where I cover guitar FX pedals. Guitar FX pedals were the first thing that really grabbed my attention and made me think about sound, tone and manipulating it. Since then pedals have been a mainstay across various bands, projects, music production work and I still use them with synths and studio gear. I'll be covering pedals from the perspective of a creative studio environment and electronic music. I won't be busting out tube screamer led blues rock licks, rather pedals with modular, across mixing desks and with creative routings. My goal is to do one Pedals and Patches video per month through 2024.
**New synth formats** As well as covering and working with Eurorack I'll be sharing videos with other synth formats, be they modular or otherwise I'm aiming to pull in a wider selection of things this year. Again, don't worry Eurorack videos aren't going anywhere.
**Better Bleeps** Some of you may remember Better Bleeps. A series I started and then didn't manage to continue some time ago. The first two videos were on turning an oscillator into a drum kit (youtu.be/gf8F31v45eo) and using logic to make melodies (youtu.be/3WhSgAFs4g4). The idea of the series is to be gear agnostic, rather than not believing in one true gear god, simply to be non-gear-specific. Better Bleeps is all about techniques and ideas that you can apply regardless of the gear I demonstrate them on. It might be some music theory, production techniques, voltage manipulation and patch ideas but it won't be about a specific piece of gear. More of these videos are coming this year.
**Self Patched** Again some of you may remember Self Patched, a series of around 10 videos (playlist here youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIWGcb0CxSCFYbDjE_TIMY--sOmWgOV-y) where I self patch a single module. Literally one module. Think of it as a one module challenge meets experimental approach to feedback, noise and pushing gear into non standard behaviours. I'll be making a series 2 this year, produced as one big batch and released regularly, with the aim of taking a break then repeating that again later in the year for another series.
**New ideas** I have lots of other ideas and things to come but I think that's plenty of announcements for now. If you have things you'd like to see me doing, leave a comment and let's talk about it.
***THIS VIDEO IS SPONSORED BY ...*** no one. Well no one specific to this video, however lots of the videos in this round up were sponsored and I'd like to thank everyone that supported what I do through 2023.

First video of the year, here (on YouTube) at least and one that's packed with lots of nice music, sounds and gear that I've been having lots of fun playing with.
I'm going for it over on Instagram with daily Jamuary content. My approach is to keep it free, fun and without any pressure. Making the recording set up a bit more visually lo fi (just my phone, so it's quick) and aiming to just capture moments of creation with a wide range of gear here in the studio. I'm grabbing old favourites, new things I'd like to try and learn all with the aim of create time to play each day.
If you'd like to follow along in more detail, with no talking, longer examples and text explanations head to instagram.com/divkidvideo for those video posts.

After mentioning this specific video segment to a few people and realising some had missed it, I wanted to repurpose this as it's own little chunk of video and sound design history. Fascinating to think that storing 3 numbers led to so many sound FX in video games.
Thanks to Jason from Instruo for originally sending this in for my tagh demo. Check out Instruo here - bit.ly/instruo

Of course you have, I have and now I have ... and now you can!
With the power of convolution reverbs and good impulse responses I transport some of my synths (Korg MS-20, Roland SH-09, PWM Malevolent and Eurorack Modular) into some unique spaces included a bombproof underground WW2 oil storage facility in Scotland, an abandoned cooling tower in Belgium as well as classic studio gear with the AKG BX20 spring reverb and the ECOPLATE 1980 plate reverb. Tremendous fun and fantastic sounds.
This is all with the brand new Verbs stereo convolution pedal from Poly Effects. It has 8 banks of 8 impulse responses (plus 8 more that can be user replaced) with some fascinating natural and man made spaces along with a collection of studio gear and create, weird and wonderful IRs too. Full features listed below.
PEDALS & PATCHES // This is also a soft launch/announcement to talk about PEDALS & PATCHES my new video series on using guitar FX pedals within creative studio environments. I'll largely be synths and modular, though other instruments and environments will creep in. This launches in 2024 and will likely be a monthly video series. NOTE // this isn't a break from what I already do, it's an addition to it.

- Mono OR stereo use only. Use TS cables on in AND out for mono use or use TRS cables on in AND out for stereo use. There's no mono in (TS) to stereo out (TRS) as the dry will only route to one side.
- The dry input sound goes straight through bypassing any circuitry/DSP on the FX side. This keeps the dry tone pure and unaffected. However this means there's no way to remove the dry sound from the mix. The mix control is a wet amount level, it will not remove the dry sound.
There's work arounds to both of these things which I'll address in the future video on Verbs. However if you're concerned leave a comment and we can discuss.
VERBS FEATURES
- 8 Banks of 8 IRs plus 8 more IRs which can be user replaced - Onset control to set a pre delay - Mix Control for wet level - Low Cut for pre EQing (removing bass) the sound - Smoosh - a granular style effect that expands the width and decays. - TRS in and out - MIDI control

Whether it's patching your own compressor, precision pitch transposer, turning low pass gates into side chain ducking devices, adding controls to knob-less modules or looking to push the behaviours of other modules ... we've got you covered! These patches are applicable to a wide range of modules, so I hope you find plenty to take away and apply to your systems.
Today also marks the release of two new Apollo View Modular modules, there's 'IOU' that we'll focus on which is a take on the classic utility processes of attenuating, inversion, offset and amplification (with a DivKid requested twist!) There's also a high end dual headphone amplifier called 'CanCan'. Not only is that a nice headphone or output stage, it has a handy VU meter (eye candy!) and if you jam & play with others that's a great tool for dual headphone monitoring.

22:11 Internal utility clipping - shape your waves!
*The pre/post switch is of course not patented, I’m just hyping my idea for laughs, fun, and giggleshiz.

Using the Befaco Voltio we explore creating chord intervals both statically and with offsetting musical sequences, we get creative with adding asymmetrical behaviours to waveshapers, we lock in FM ratios with analogue VCOs and plenty more.
The Befaco Voltio is a musical voltage source with 0-10V or -5/+5V octave offsets alongside semitone offsets, perfect for dealing in chord intervals. It features 2mm banana outputs that work with probes and it is a very accurate voltage that they designed for testing, building and calibrating modules. As well as generating voltages it's features a sum input, allowing this to work as a precision adder for adding or subtracting CV offset values from both sub audio CV signals and from audio sources.
