The Storm King March-Galop - E.T. Paull (1902) Piano Solo Christina Pepper 2025-08-22 | The Storm King March-Galop, composed by E.T. Paull in 1902, for piano solo.It's been some time since I recorded a Paull march, and what a way to gloriously return to them! This one is specifically titled a "March-Galop" giving it a faster than usual tempo, and includes a dramatic introduction with weather descriptions as the Storm King approaches. **You can turn on the subtitles to see those as they appear in the sheet music** (Paull also encourages the performer to skip the intro if they don't think they can render it accurately/effectively enough, so you'll have to judge for yourselves if I pulled it off.) He's most well-known for the Christensen School of Popular Music which he founded to teach the fundamentals of syncopated music. Upwards of 500,000 students enrolled in the program before it began to taper off during the Great Depression. His magazine, the "Ragtime Review," had a successful 4-year run before being bought out and helped to promote his instructional guides and school. This year's was written for the musical comedy "The Yankee Girl" and was dedicated to the star of the show, Blanche Ring. There were also lyrics, written by Kenneth S. Clark, and the title went through several iterations like: "Uncle Sam's Navy" and "The Honor of the Yankee Navy" before settling on the current title. Fenstad (1910) Piano Solo Christina Pepper 2025-06-27 | The University of Maine Stein Song was written to the tune of the march "Opie" by composer E.A. Fenstad, lyrics by student Lincoln Ross Colcord, and was published in this form in 1910. It was popularized in 1930 by Rudy Vallée who recorded it for mainstream audiences and it became a number one hit (apparently the only college song to do so!) Knick Knocks Rag - Phil Schwartz (1915) Ragtime Piano Solo Christina Pepper 2025-05-31 | Knick Knocks Rag (One Step or Two Step) by Phil Schwartz, composed in 1915. A clever rag from a composer with a handful of published works, including the "Chow-Chow Rag" and "The Weird Rag." Schwartz was born in 1889 and lived in Chicago. He developed into an excellent pianist and seems to have made a career of it and was described as likeable and successful at whatever he did. He remained in Chicago but at some point moved to Los Angeles later in life and died in 1964. There's a 1928 recording on YouTube of him accompanying Ruth Etting singing "Say Yes Today."Thanks to @compukats for providing a brief bio! Williams Wedding Rag - Harry Austin Tierney (1911) Ragtime Piano Solo Christina Pepper 2025-05-03 | William's Wedding Rag, composed by Harry Austin Tierney in 1911. Tierney got his start writing piano rags but is most well-known for his contributions to Broadway (his greatest success being "Irene" from 1919.) It became the longest-running show at the time when it passed 620 performances, and includes his most famous song "Alice Blue Gown." The Belle of Chicago March - John Philip Sousa (1892) Piano Solo Christina Pepper 2025-04-18 | The Belle of Chicago March by John Philip Sousa, composed in 1892.Today's video is a piano solo arrangement (by an unknown arranger) of a Sousa march that apparently received some criticism in it's time. One quote from a reporter at the time read: “Mr. Sousa evidently regards the Chicago belle as a powerful creature, with the swinging stride of a giant, a voice like a foghorn, and feet like sugar-cured hams.” (From Paul E. Bierley's 1984 "The Works of John Philip Sousa.") Her Grace, The Duchess At the Kings Court by John Philip Sousa (1905) Piano Solo Christina Pepper 2025-01-24 | "Her Grace, The Duchess" from the suite "At the King's Court" by John Philip Sousa. Composed in 1905 and arranged for piano solo by Charles Kunkel. I'm excited to finally share this piece; it's been quite the undertaking! Sousa composed this suite for band in 1905, consisting of three movements: "Her Ladyship, the Countess," "Her Grace, the Duchess," and "Her Majesty, the Queen." He then commissioned Charles Kunkel, a famous pianist, arranger, and music publisher, to arrange "At the King's Court" for piano. Lady With the Red Dress Rag - Robert OBrien (1900) Ragtime Piano Solo Christina Pepper 2025-01-10 | Lady With the Red Dress Ragtime March, composed by Robert O'Brien in 1900.A very early rag today from the composer of "Rag Pickers Rag". "Lady With the Red Dress" was probably O'Brien's first composition and written when he was fairly young; one review stated he was 17 at the time, though that number doesn't seem to line up with his apparent birth year. It's labeled as a 'Ragtime March, Two-Step, and Cakewalk (just to make sure all the bases were covered, I suppose 😅) but is a quality rag in it's own right. Minuet in G - Bach/Petzold Arr. by Edward MacDowell - Classical Piano Solo Christina Pepper 2024-11-30 | Returning to some classical fundamentals today, but with a twist! The famous Minuet in G Major and Minuet in G minor have long been attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, appearing in the 1725 "Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach" which was compiled by Bach and his wife. It wasn't until the 1970's that it was discovered that these were actually the works of German composer and organist Christian Petzold. In 1890 (and unbeknownst to him at the time) Edward MacDowell released the collection: "Six Little Pieces by J. S. Bach" which had an arrangement of the two Minuets consolidated into one piece and some additional embellishments. This video is my performance of said arrangement. The Lost Rag - Herbert Ingraham (1909) Ragtime Piano Solo Christina Pepper 2024-11-08 | The Lost Rag by Herbert Ingraham, composed in 1909.Herbert Ingraham was another promising ragtime composer who died too soon, but left us with many high-quality rags, especially in 1909 the year before his death. "The Lost Rag" begins in a normal Ingraham fashion until we get to the Trio and things shift - the feel becomes more grandiose, the melody switches from normal syncopation to large rolled chords and there's a building momentum that happens in the LH. The Cauldron Rag - Axel Christensen (1909) Ragtime Piano Solo Christina Pepper 2024-10-26 | The Cauldron Rag, composed by Axel Christensen in 1909 😈This week's video (and the second of my October spooky syncopations!) is by none other than the 'Czar of Ragtime' himself. He's most well-known for the Christensen School of Popular Music which he founded to teach the fundamentals of syncopated music. Upwards of 500,000 students enrolled in the program before it began to taper off during the Great Depression. His magazine, the "Ragtime Review," had a successful 4-year run before being bought out and helped to promote his instructional guides and school.
