Kowloon Walled City: And the Walls Came Tumbling Down (1984) kiwifilm 2017-09-03 | This documentary / fund raiser film was produced in 1984 by the Hong Kong Salvation Army to raise sponsorship for their educational activities in the infamous Kowloon Walled City. The documentary's producer, director and cameraman Hugh Baddeley was taken ill shortly after filming started. I was a new arrival in Hong Kong, also without an ID card like the subject of this film, and I was asked to step in and complete the filming. The project was filmed in 16mm film, but I do not know if any film prints remain. This videotape copy has survived in a box for 33 years until I just discovered it, and so here it is on youtube depicting a time gone by for the public interest.

Bodyspeak kiwifilm 2011-05-03 | A film by Gregor Nicholas. (c) 1983 I was camera assistant and "understudy" Lighting Cameraman on this film. When Alan Locke was unavailable to shoot the last segment "Aitutaki", Gregor kindly asked me to stand in. Ten years later the gaffers on this film did us all proud: Stuart Dryburgh was nominated for an Oscar for best cinematography for "the Piano" with Don Jowsey as gaffer. The Piano received 3 Oscars that year. IMDB records this film as titled "Drum/Sing" and made in 1987. I recall that Drum/Sing was the working title and here it is released as BodySpeak in 1983. I trust that Gregor and the sponsors, the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council of New Zealand do not have any issues with my displaying this copy here. - Justin Keen
Screaming MeeMees - Stars in Your Eyes kiwifilm 2011-05-03 | The Screaming Meemees were one of the biggest post-punk new-wave pop bands in New Zealand in the early 1980s. The band formed in Auckland in 1979, composed of vocalist Tony Drumm, guitarist Michael O'Neill, keyboard and bass player Peter van der Fluit and drummer "Laurence "Yoh" Landwer-Johan. It's a pity that Michael andLaurence didn't get out of bed the day we shot this - we would have had more materiel to shoot rather than the "shadow" band. I hear this cost $169 to produce. We were obviously overpaid in those days! Director Willie Keddel, Camera Justin Keen, Assisted by Chris Barrett and Matin Rumsby and others from Alternative Cinema. - I believe this is copyright 1982 Propellor Records and / or Simon Grigg.

Weekly Parade #431 - University Fine Art School kiwifilm 2011-04-30 | A documentary on the Auckland University Elam School of Fine Art in 1980. A pastiche in the style of the post World War II New Zealand Government news reels (Weekly Review and Pictorial Parade), Weekly Parade #431 was produced by Justin Keen as partial fulfilment of his Master degree in Fina Art (Fllm). The film was shot and edited over a 6 month period using some found expired 16mm black and white TV news film. Some was processed by hand, but this proved too difficult and the remainder was processed with the kind assistance of David Calderwood of Reynolds/Vidcom Film Laboratory. Brian Weatherly kindly provided the voice over and the producer would like to expressly thank the students and staff who appeared in the film. (c) Justin Keen 1981
