The first two minutes of this Super 8 reel feature scenes from a family trip to AstroWorld, beginning with an amazing look at Friar Tuck's Arcade filled with Ms. Pac-Man machines for a tournament that was being held one weekend. The footage also includes the Excalibur roller coaster, as well as Antique Taxis, the Aquarena Theatre, the 610 Limited train, and signage for Thunder River. Last 1/3 of the footage is first day of school, I believe for 5th grade for me.Mark Gurrola: “Margarita”Nathan Cone2021-12-10 | Mark Gurrola has been exploring ways of composing by using recipes as a framework for composition. This all-purpose fun center didn’t have the same acreage as Malibu Grand Prix, but made up for its smaller go-kart track by also including a bumper boats and a triple water slide. Mini-golf perilously close to the raging F.M. 1960 was also a hit, as were the video games. Many kids had a birthday party there, including me, as evidenced by this Super 8 footage from 1982.
The place was off of Welcome Road and F.M. 1960. The sign had a crown atop the “M” in the word “games.”Amtrak from Houston to Brenham, September 1976Nathan Cone2020-05-04 | In this film from 1976, the Cone family travels from Houston to Brenham on the Amtrak train. I’m in the red shirt. Besides my parents, the short film includes footage of various aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as my Grandmama.
In 1976, you could still take a day trip to Brenham on the train from Houston. Doing a little research, I found that the train left Houston at 7:30 a.m. and arrived in Brenham at 9:41 a.m. A returning train left Brenham at 5:00 p.m. and arrived back in Houston at 7:25 p.m.
As you can see in the footage, white tablecloths and flowers were the norm in train travel back in the day. And I remembered loving those pancakes.
I love the lens flare at 3.11 in the footage. The service station at the corner of Kuykendahl and F.M. 1960 (no longer there) gave me a red hat and some patches for my mom to sew onto a shirt.
The film ends with a some footage of my dad building our backyard clubhouse, and me mugging for the camera.Astros Buddies, early 1980sNathan Cone2017-10-30 | A visit with members of the Houston Astros; early 1980s.Matt Zoller Seitz & Aaron Aradillas on the films of Wes Anderson (Part 2)Nathan Cone2013-11-19 | PART 2 of an onstage panel discussion on the films of Wes Anderson and modern movie criticism with Matt Zoller Seitz, author of "The Wes Anderson Collection," San Antonio-based critic Aaron Aradillas, and TPR's Nathan Cone.
