Fetid Souls Original Soundtrack By Adam Monroe Adam Monroe 2021-07-10 | This is my original soundtrack score for the comedy horror podcast audio drama Fetid Souls. You can listen to the entire Fetid Souls Project here on YouTube:youtu.be/L0R1jtwYfn0amazon.com/Fetid-Souls-Original-Soundtrack-Monroe/dp/B099YV29SQThe process of writing the score took about six months. Being an audio drama and not a traditional film score, this project was a bit challenging at times, as elements that would usually be represented in a film visually needed to be represented in the score through audio. I chose to write a score that is almost completely orchestral, but there are some electronic elements present. The score was largely influenced by two composers: Danny Elfman and Bernard Herrmann. The project attempts to bridge the genres of horror and comedy, and for this type of score Danny Elfman is a good composer to emulate, as his scores for Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice include elements of horror, comedy, and drama. The Main Title is actually a bit of an homage to Elfman's Tales From the Crypt theme. Bernard Herrmann was another big influence, and for inspiration here I looked to his classic film scores - Vertigo, Psycho, and Twisted Nerve. I chose to make the score orchestral rather than focus on ambience or sound design. An ambient score is fine when you have a film or movie where the visuals are dominating or compensating for a lot of the experience, but with an audio drama, I felt that it was necessary to create soundscapes within the score using the expanded harmonic language and tones that only orchestration can provide. This kind of traditional, Old-Hollywood film scoring might sound a bit dated to modern ears, but I believe it worked well in this project and, brought a lot of the scenes and characters to life. For this project, not only did I have to create an original orchestral score, but we also recorded many tracks of existing music. Most of these aren't included on the original soundtrack, but I have included the 4 traditional gospel hymns used in the production. We recorded traditional versions of these that included the cast singing, but in official soundtrack I have instead included the "weird" electronic versions that I made to fill-out certain parts of the score: In the Garden, Standing on the Promises, When the Roll is Called up Yonder, and In the Sweet By and By. There are also many, many cues that didn't make it onto the final soundtrack. I'm not sure exactly how much music was written for the score, but it might be upwards of 2 or 3 hours (the entire podcasts clocks in at around 4 hours). Most of the music written for the production did make it into the final product and can be heard there.Of course there are many small influences and references in the score besides Elfman and Herrmann. I borrowed a few ideas from Jerry Goldsmith's Alien soundtrack, specifically how he experiments with the use of delay in that score. The harmonic language of Koichi Sugiyama is an ever-present influence on the music that I write. This time we are testing 11 Wurlitzer plugins: Scarbee A200, Acousticsamples Wurlie, Waves Electric 200, Neo Soul Keys Studio 2 Wurli, Arturia Wurlitzer V, Adam Monroe's Wurlitzer, Acousticsamples VReeds, Soniccoutre Broken Wurli, Velvet 2, Keyscape Wurlitzer, and AAS Lounge Lizard. Wurlitzer VST AU AAX plugin Version 2.5 Adam Monroes Wurlitzer Adam Monroe 2021-02-01 | Video demo for version 2.5 of my VST AU AAX Wurlitzer plugin. adammonroemusic.com/wurlitzer-vst/am-wurlitzer-vst-plugin.htmlThis time around I've added vacuum tube simulations (this is essential for getting classic Wurlitzer tones used by bands like like Supertramp, Three Dog Night, Queen, and all the other bands who run a Wurlitzer 200a electronic piano or equivalent through tube or solid state amps, in order to get a brighter more cutting sound. In this short video I demo a few of the Wurlitzer plugin's presets which are take from popular Wurlitzer songs by SuperTramp, Queen, Three Dog Night, and Steely Dan.The main upgrade in this plugin over version 2.0 of my Wurlitzer plugin are the vacuum tube sims. Certain presets that relied heavily on the atan function distortion now rely on the non-linear distortion of simulated vacuum tubes, and this has the overall affect of making the Wurlitzer plugin sound less digital/splatty and more analog. I've also added about 20 presets over the last version, cabinet and amp impulse responses, as well as a Leslie Simulation that I don't demo in this video. This is a shorter demonstration than I tend to do, but I have longer mp3s of all the Wurlitzer songs covered here on my website. I'm using Cakewalk to demonstrate the VST version, but purchasing the plugin gets you the AU and AAX version, so no matter would DAW you are using, you should be able to load the plugin directly in. I've also mellowed the sound of the Wurlitzer where applicable (the default preset is now a mellower tone, with an even mellower "smooth default" and a "bright default" which was the old standard). I've compared my wurlitzer plugin to a lot of other vst versions, and I've found most of them are mellower. My Wurlitzer is also generally a bit mellower sounding, but again, most of the Wurlitzer tones you hear on classic songs are mixed, eq'd, and sent through amps to come out brighter and cutting.This is likely to be the final version of my Wurlitzer vst, as I've accomplished all the goals I set forth when designing a Wurlitzer plugin. The whole thing took 3 days - 1 day to learn and transcribe the theme music, and 2 days to record and "orchestrate" it. I recorded the performance data live like you see in the video, I then went into my DAW and changed what the midi notes trigger to match orchestral samples. I tried not to add too much to the performance that wasn't already there, hence there aren't many "extra notes," just adjustments to midi lengths and some octave shifting. I think it's amazing how much of an orchestral sound you can capture with a piano performance. I'm mostly using Spitfire BML Mural. I could have done a better orchestration, but for the most part I wasn't doing much midi automation or adding extra rhythms, just orchestrating a performance.The music to the Wing Commander games is all pretty good, I especially like some of the Wing Commander: Privateer stuff.
