Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake Review – The Star (Episode 7) Uncivilized Elk 2023-11-04 | Vampire World is scary to Fionna Campbell, and she’s right to be scared in a world where even the hero Billy (who fought a bear) was sucked dry. Cake the Cat is really feeling herself though, and has no fear even when facing the Vampire King. Simon realizes his worth as a parent and sees what a bad dad could have done to Marceline, while back in Fionna’s universe, Gary Prince also saves Marshall Lee from bad parenting. Bonnie and the Star were great alternate versions of their prime counterparts, Huntress was fun, and wholesome Martin Mertens felt so strange, but I think Peppermint Tank stole the show for me as my personal favorite. Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake Review – The Winter King (Episode 6) Uncivilized Elk 2023-09-20 | The Winter King was a frosty wad for 100 years until his reign was ended by a magic-draining kiss from Fionna that turned him into dust. Simon Petrikov is vindicated, and all is well. Except that Simon still thinks he can get cursed the correct way, and Fionna is only just starting to realize the tragedy that has followed the group’s wake as they hop across worlds. This episode still leaves our central cast on the backburner, but it was a delightful romp through the snow with the Winter King, and a sweet dulcet chorus of sugary goodness with the Candy Queen. Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake Review – Destiny (Episode 5) Uncivilized Elk 2023-09-19 | We return to Farmworld 12 years into the future in the enthralling episode “Destiny.” Big Destiny has a family, with Little Destiny shaping up to be his successor, if not for her secret relationship with Jay, the son of a rugged Finn Mertens, who now takes care of his 5 children after his partner (which is practically confirmed to have been the Farmworld version of Huntress Wizard) had died. And FW Jake is still alive, though super duper old. Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake Review – Prismo the Wishmaster (Episode 4) Uncivilized Elk 2023-09-13 | The 4th episode of the Fionna & Cake series, named after Prismo the Wishmaster, was both extremely funny and extremely sad. Many of our characters are depressed, Simon even considered giving up, while Fionna & Cake finally realize their entire world may be on the cusp of being eradicated. Adventure Time pulls off an impeccable balancing act of keeping harmony between the humor and sorrow. Also, the Scarab, a brand new antagonist, finally makes his debut with the power to turn peeps into tamagotchi-like eggs. Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake Review – Cake the Cat (Episode 3) Uncivilized Elk 2023-09-10 | Cake the Cat warps into the Land of Ooo and chaos ensues for the innocent bystanders who shop at the local market for cursed fruit and whatnot. I had fun watching Cake and Squirrel enact silly hijinks together before Fionna beats up everyone to save her beloved pet/roommate. This episode was very enjoyable, but did not pack as many mind-blowing moments as the episodes surrounding it, so it comes off as relatively lackluster (again, only because the other episodes were so dang amazing). We also got to see Choose Goose (now evil from Coconteppi’s ichor), Dirt Beer Guy, TV, and of course, none other than Finn Mertens (who got JACKED)! The forest environment in this episode was also among my favorites. Speculations on the Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake Series Uncivilized Elk 2023-07-19 | Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake is a new series consisting of 10 episodes, and is expected to be out this autumn (release date has been officially revealed to be August 31, after this video was uploaded). A surprising aspect of this spin-off is the two titular genderbent leads will be teaming up with Simon Petrikov (who is now free from his Ice King persona) for a multiverse-hopping adventure. The scope and amount of episodes to this story makes me hopeful that not only will we flesh out the characters of Fionna and Cake like never before, but Simon will have an entire character arc for us to witness. Will we see Golb/Golbetty? Will we see those Lich hands which entered every universe/reality back in the episode “Crossover”? Will we see stuff we’ve never seen before that raises more questions than answers in true Adventure Time fashion? Infinity Train Review: Book 4 - Duet (Part 1: Episodes 1–5) Uncivilized Elk 2023-04-01 | In the 1980’s, Ryan Akagi and Min-Gi Park were estranged childhood friends who ended up being the first "buy one, get one free" passenger(s) to be abducted onto the infamous interdimensional train that forces you to get busy bettering yourself or get busy dying. With the saucy service bell Kez to aid them, and Amelia overthrowing One as the Conductor in the background, these two rock buddies venture through the “train to nowhere” to unlock the true Chicken Choice Judy experience within their collective selves.Infinity Train has unfortunately been canceled at Book 4, despite the storyboards for Season 5 already having been created (after a movie pitch was rejected, to boot!). Then (to pour gasoline in the wound and light it ablaze), the series was completely removed from HBO Max and Cartoon Network due to dumb executive decisions from the Warner-Discovery merger. All hope is not lost, but it will be a massive bummer if this fantastic series can’t find a way to continue (which is sadly a possibility), because this train to nowhere still has so many stops left! Adventure Time: Distant Lands Megareview – Together Again (Part 1) Uncivilized Elk 2022-11-19 | The Adventure Time: Distant Lands special “Together Again” was an afterlife-spanning adventure of countless callbacks and cameos, and began with one of the most delightfully audacious cold opens I have ever seen! What an absolutely delightful saṃsāra of an adventure!While the series finale, "Come Along With Me," looked at the world of Adventure Time from a grand scale, "Together Again" was an intimate, heartfelt, and joyous exploration of the bond between Finn the Human and Jake the Dog, but also included a wacky quest where our heroic duo reunites to save the Dead Worlds from New Death's shenanigans with the aid of Joshua, Margaret, and none other than Tiffany (who decides to attain redemption by abandoning being a dirty cop Undertaker and becoming an honorary brother to Finn, Jake, and Jermaine). I loved the journey from start to finish. I really wanted to have this review be a single lengthy video, but my depression has been a constant diabolical tranch, and I currently have no idea when I’ll regain my capability and zest to make more videos. I (obviously) hope that I will be able to return with more content sooner than later. This chunk of the full review was (mostly) created shortly after “Together Again” originally premiered way back when. Godzilla vs. Kong Could’ve Been Great Uncivilized Elk 2021-04-26 | Godzilla vs. Kong was my favorite out of Legendary’s MonsterVerse movies (so far) simply because the kaiju combat was more fun than in the previous films. While the monster battles failed to adequately portray the awe-inspiring scale of these gigantic titans (Shin Godzilla pulled this off exceptionally well, on the other hand), the fights were nonetheless very enjoyable (embracing the wackiness certainly helped). The plot was bad of course (as expected), but what frustrated me most is that the human side of things could have at least been tolerable if you just excise the “conspiracy crew” completely from the movie. With some minor alterations beyond that, I think you could even scramble together a decent story experience from what’s on the cutting board without much difficulty, although I do not expect Godzilla vs. Kong to ever get an alternate improved cut (would be nice, though). Finn, Bronwyn, and Jake in Obsidian – Adventure Time: Distant Lands Analysis Uncivilized Elk 2020-12-04 | While Obsidian was about the relationship of Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen, the brief appearance of Finn and Bronwyn raises tons of questions that fuel countless more speculations. Join me as I discuss how much time may have passed / how old Finn Mertens might be in this Distant Lands special, why Bronwyn tagged along in (what I presume to be Finn’s) van, and why the Land of Ooo’s most famous hero (who is now scruffy, bearded, and scarred-up) has a big chest tattoo of his brother Jake the Dog who is nowhere to be found. Things get rather sad, because yeah, I personally am convinced that Jake is dead, but I do find bittersweet sentiment in the gonzo chest tattoo that Jake has been memorialized with on Finn’s pecs. Infinity Train Review: S3E3 - The Debutante Ball Car Uncivilized Elk 2020-08-27 | The Debutante Ball Car, which is filled with living ornaments and aristocratic Cthulian people, requires that anyone passing through must first "enter society." That means Grace, Simon, Hazel, and Tuba have to learn how to ballroom dance. In the process, Grace opens up to Hazel and Tuba about her past, and by the end, Grace even starts to feel low-key empathy for a denizen of the train. Simon, meanwhile, learns nothing. Infinity Train Review: S3E2 - The Jungle Car Uncivilized Elk 2020-08-18 | "The Jungle Car" introduces Hazel and Tuba, but also further fleshes out the personalities of Grace and Simon. It’s a solid and enjoyable continuation to Book 3 of Infinity Train. The episode culminates with the two cult leaders, in an attempt to gain the favor of the mysterious girl Hazel, compromising and letting a powerful denizen of the train tag along with their group. Infinity Train Review: S3E1 - The Musical Car Uncivilized Elk 2020-08-15 | “May our spirits be high, and our numbers higher! Down with the false Conductor! The Apex reveals the truth!” Book 3 of Infinity Train, titled Cult of the Conductor, establishes how Grace and Simon run their child cult and further explores the personality of these two new lead characters. Only a fraction of the episode takes place in the Musical Car, where the denizens were performing Jesse’s song about empathy (when I look at you, I see me), until they were violently assaulted by the Apex. The rest of the episode takes place in the Gravity Turtle College Car (alternatively, the Unfinished Car), where an unexpected train rearrangement leaves Grace and Simon stranded without backup. “The Musical Car” was an excellent start to the new season. Cult Recruitment in The Mall Car – Infinity Train Analysis & Review Uncivilized Elk 2020-08-12 | According to Grace and Simon, the Infinity Train rightfully belongs to the Apex, the size of a passenger’s number is representative of their strength, “nulls” are deceitful beings whose lives hold no value, and One-One is a brainwashing bot who usurped the true Conductor (Amelia). Of course one should probably be careful when it comes to believing delinquents with mildly fascist undertones who run a child cult. Grace and Simon utilize legitimate cult recruitment methodologies when trying to gain Jesse’s favor to have the lad join the Apex, and their attempts may very well have worked had Jesse not already developed a deep and meaningful bond with Lake over the course of their adventures.This was a great episode, and I'm very excited to see what trouble Grace and Simon will get into (and cause) in Book 3: Cult of the Conductor. Infinity Train Review: S2E4 - The Toad Car Uncivilized Elk 2020-07-18 | On the run from Agent Mace and Agent Sieve of the Mirror Police, Lake and Jesse get locked in a train car where the only way to advance is to kick a toad. Lake and Jesse’s argument stems from a lack of honesty with each other, and it’s not until trust develops between the two that they’re able to escape (and free the toad from his existential nightmarish existence). Adventure Time: Distant Lands Review – BMO Uncivilized Elk 2020-07-14 | Adventure Time returns with Distant Lands! The first 45 minute special features BMO being recruited by a mysterious robot (who BMO names Olive) to save a far-away society called The Drift, where a myriad of alien beings live semi-communally under the directive of a nefarious character called Hugo. It’s up to sheriff BMO and his deputy Y5 to make sure The Drift is safe from Hugo and the rascal Mr. M! Looks like terraforming Mars with potatoes will have to wait. Infinity Train Review: S2E3 - The Map Car Uncivilized Elk 2020-02-23 | Abandon the butterfly stroke, Jesse!"The Map Car" was fantastic from a characterization perspective. The episode is Jesse-centric and primarily serves to get his character arc into gear, but touches upon many themes of Book Two of Infinity Train, even those pertaining to Lake. Infinity Train Review: S2E2 - The Family Tree Car Uncivilized Elk 2020-01-31 | Lake and Jesse fight a bit, but also start to figure themselves out a bit. The second episode of Infinity Train Book Two is full of characterization that paves the way for the character development to come in future episodes. Infinity Train Review: S2E1 - The Black Market Car Uncivilized Elk 2020-01-20 | Book 2 of Infinity Train was absolutely awesome, and I'll be reviewing each episode! I hope I manage to stay focused and motivated to churn these reviews out, lest I end up on the Infinity Train. Then again, I could really use its aggressive form of self-therapy. Worst case is I’d get horribly murdered by something, which would still be an absolute win in my eyes. My reviews of Book 2: Cracked Reflection will be done in a retrospective manner, meaning I may discuss events that occur in future episodes, and I will not be calling the main character Mirror Tulip or MT, but rather the name she picks for herself in the final episode: Lake.Despite the episode being called “The Black Market Car,” most of it takes place in the canopy of the the Family Tree Car. The day after a magical deer saves Lake from the Mirror Police, Jesse shows up and the Travel Friends gang is assembled, whether Lake likes it or not. Only for Alan Dracula to peace out due to either ulterior motives or a distatse for yelling (or both). Who knows what goes through the mind of this wacky deer. The Steven Universe Movie Has Some Issues Uncivilized Elk 2019-09-06 | The production value of Steven Universe: The Movie is greater than ever, but the slick captivating exterior can't make up for the narrative problems that plague the experience as a whole. Steven Universe: The Movie looks great, sounds great, and is packed with emotion, but lacks substance behind that energy. The way the movie treats the Diamonds is awful, the main cast only retreads experiences they already had, and Spinel (while zany, wacky, and sympathetic) has a character arc that's not particularly compelling and ends rather horrifically. Thematically, there's too many issues that fun packaging can't cover up, and thus I didn't like Steven Universe: The Movie. Spinel's clown shoes squeaking did amuse me though.I endlessly looped "Other Friends" because it was tied for my favorite song (with Disobedient), and it got stuck in my head super bad, and thus I shall make it get stuck in all your heads too. Why Was Ugly Irwin in Tulip’s Divorce Memory? (Infinity Train Analysis) Uncivilized Elk 2019-09-03 | Ugly Irwin, the non-corgi resident of the Corgi Car, appears in Tulip’s altered memories when she’s trapped in the tape world during the episode “The Cat’s Car.”It’s a weird and quirky appearance steeped in symbolism that allows for a framework to further discuss the theme of dealing with divorce. Also, I discuss how much I like the detail that Tulip rips paper when stressed. While I wanted to talk about both of these things in my review of Infinity Train, maybe it’s for the better that I didn’t, as my discussion on “The Cat’s Car” in part 1 of my review already took up nearly half that video without these extra topics thrown in. Jurassic Worlds Dinosaurs Are Terrible Uncivilized Elk 2018-06-19 | This video is both a critique of Jurassic World from a conceptual perspective as well as an examination of what the movie gets wrong about extinct animals. Scientifically accurate representations of dinosaurs and other extinct animals on the big screen would be awesome simply due to the rarity of paleontological accuracy in pop culture, but more importantly, I think rooting the Jurassic film franchise in scientific knowledge would create a more unique, interesting, and enjoyable movie experience. While this might seem counter-intuitive, grounding the appearance and behavior of extinct animals in reality can actually circumvent lazy writing and common tropes, while also making the on-screen animals far more interesting and creative.Basically, my thesis is that the abundance of scientific inaccuracy in movies featuring animals (both extinct and extant) often creates stupidity and stifles creativity.
