It had taken me 25 years of experimenting to achieve, with guitars full of pickups, wires, batteries.Thankfully, Fishman delivered. I've been using the Fishman Rare Earth Mic Blend for many years as the backbone of my sound. It combines a magnetic humbucker for clarity, power and warmth, and a condenser microphone for natural air and realism, and percussive response. But they added a new element for me, called the PowerTap, which is a sensor mounted to the wood which delivers that third dimension, including endlessly deep rich bass but - miraculously - with no feedback. And those 3 elements - magnetic, mic and sensor - can be mixed with two blend-wheels hidden within easy reach inside your guitar. Or you can split the 3 elements, and connect them to separate channels on your amp, mixer or interface, and process them all separately with whatever EQ and effects you like. This is the dream, basically!And now, Fishman have decided to release it as a standalone product, the PowerTap Earth Pro, and as my signature pickup system!I'm honoured and delighted. Unboxing & first play of my new Ibanez JGM11 signature guitar Jon Gomm 2024-09-09 | That terrifying moment right before I open the case, recorded for your enjoyment. I usually hate brand new acoustic guitars, but I couldn't believe how this sounded without any breaking in. There's a limited run in progress, but do you think we should put the JGM11 into full production?The JGM11 has three main differences from the JGM10:1. Wood - The 11 has solid mahogany back and sides, rather than pau ferro. The mahogany gives a warmer, rounder tone, as opposed to the darker, more throaty pau ferro. Mahogany is also lighter, so the guitar is less weighty.2. Tuners - The JGM11 comes with a pair of Bill Keith locking detuners on the 1st and 2nd strings, pre-installed and ready for glissando fun. 3. Finish - It's not black.But you'll also have noticed the stunning minimalist Passionflower inlaid on the neck, using only different woods. More details for guitar nerds: The JGM11 has a AAA-grade spruce top which has been thermo-aged, giving it richer tonal character and a toasty honey colour. It has ebony bridge and fretboard and super-long-lasting stainless steel frets, for clarity and volume especially when using tapping and other modern fingerstyle techniques. I love the minimalist “mobius circles” rosette, which matches the unique JGM asymmetrical ergonomic body shape. The depth of the mahogany's lustre is brought out by a water-clear gloss finish, and matches the mahogany neck with its two flame-maple stripes, for extra stability and just yet-more gorgeousness. The JGM11 pickup system is the same as the JGM10 and JGM5: A triple-source system designed by Fishman, only available in the JGM series, featuring a magnetic pickup, an internal body-sensor, and a condenser mic. With your choice of simple blended mono, blended stereo, or separate three-way outputs.And it's just amazing to see those legendary Keith Tuners ready-fitted on a guitar! One time I was hunkered down watching a documentary about fish. This was new footage, of undiscovered creatures who live in the very deepest parts of the very deepest oceans. Down there it's cold, bleak, there's no light, and almost no life. The fish that roam this wasteland alone are hideous beasts with terrifying fangs and luminescent lures.Thinking about these tragic monsters left me pretty upset. For days. Until eventually I realised, they must come from somewhere. There must be a daddy hideous sea monster, and a mummy hideous sea monster, and, despite the odds, they must meet, and fall in love, and make little baby hideous sea monsters. Performance wise, this arrangement channels Michael Hedges maybe more than anything else I've ever come up with. Not just the guitar techniques, but the vocal, even the bare feet. I've played it better than this, but I've played it worse. It's kinda slow: I was a bit bipolar, so I'm dragging it back, fighting myself, and I probably over-compensated. This song is an angry metaphor about Western anti-terror propaganda, with a president or prime minister represented as a Wild West snake oil salesman, striking fear into the hearts of the townspeople with tales of scary invaders, and using that as an excuse to send The Weather Machine to far-flung poverty stricken regions in the East. SPOILER ALERT: The Machine is supposed to bring rain to the desert to transform it into a Western paradise, but instead it rains down fire and destruction.Musically it's a metal-heavy Arabic-influenced onslaught. Gloria was my first proper girlfriend, I was about sixteen. When I was a kid our world was tribal, you had to be either a "townie", or a "mosher", or you were nothing. Gloria was a townie, I was a mosher. So it was a forbidden love, crossing the mosher/townie divide, frowned upon by friends and even family, very much like the situation of Romeo and Juliet. Except that Gloria's family was more... violent than Juliet's family. It's a country song, really, and a waltz. The most romantic form of music as yet discovered by mankind. CREDITS:I played the song on Wilma, my trusty Lowden guitar, fitted with Newtone Jon Gomm signature strings and Bill Keith banjo tuners, and tuned to AFCFGC. The sound is coming primarily from a Fishman Rare Earth Blend pickup. My vocal mic is a Sontronics STC-80. I used various effects pedals, mostly Boss. In fact, it's made of keratin, and so you could get exactly the same medical benefits for free, just by eating your own hair. But Dance Of The Last Rhino isn't a sad, mournful piece. It's a wardance. The rhino is a noble, warrior-like animal, and they won't go out without a fight.
