I did this arrangement for the Pixel Mixer's September 2023 contest with the theme "recover" in which covers of vgm you did in the past or others did are eligible. The first half of this arrangement was originally created by @WarpWhistlesMusic (with flute instead of soprano sax), and I extended and added some of my own arrangement inspired by it in the second half.

In this case I arranged Over the Sky by pre-holder. I believe it only appeared in the later four chapters of the VN, and apparently it also appeared in Higurashi which I haven't read. The original track has only a few key musical ideas and is very atmospheric. In this arrangement I took the chord progression and main melody and tried spinning them in different ways while somewhat trying to hold onto the atmospheric or expansive sense of the original track. Even if it does not completely align with the mood or intent of the original track, I felt like I took inspiration from the contents of the soundtrack and VN as a whole in this arrangement.

This soundtrack definitely has some of these influences in it including both of the Termina themes. For this arrangement I tried to somewhat treat it like I would an arrangement with multiple instruments, having different sections with different moods, however I did just do all the arrangement while playing through on the accordion instead of on the computer which was fun. I got to use a few different register settings as well on this awesome Serenellini accordion.

I had a chance to record the acoustic piano and soprano sax with a ribbon microphone which made for a different mixing experience given how much more mellow the source sounds were. Also this is the first track my recently acquired Borsini Modern accordion appears on. I recorded the accordion with an XY mic configuration to get a bit of stereo on the sound which I felt makes it really nice to work with in the mix. I will definitely be doing some Star Ocean 6 arrangements, but I have decided to wait until after playing the game to do these since the process of covering a track over exposes me to it such that I am tired of it for a while. I don't want this to get in the way of enjoying the game so the SO6 covers will be a while off for now.
Preemptive Strike is a track that sort of exemplifies what I like so much about the Star Ocean 3 soundtrack. It mixes together analog synths and odd meters and an acoustic bass and jazzy break that seemingly could be out of place but actually work really well into the vibe. And it all comes together to describe the atmosphere of a space ship preparing for battle or in some sort of state of action. The instrumentation, composition, sense of exploration, and the quality of the vibe and atmosphere is why I love the Star Ocean 3 music so much.
In this arrangement, I used the OB-6 (as shown in the video) for most parts. The bass is actually coming from the MatrixBrute using the OB-6 as the controller via a midi cable. This video is also unusual for me in that almost all the video you see is the actual take of me recording the audio (minus the saxophone).

In 2019 I was working on developing a surreal noir text adventure/platformer game with a few friends. The game never got close to finishing, but I had written this music for it.
When considering how I wanted score the game we were making I wanted to take the opportunity to truly focus on building mood and atmosphere. As a result, there aren't a lot of abrupt or large shifts in momentum or texture.
My 1980 Rhodes Mark II electric piano and Korg Minilogue analog synthesizer dominate the instrument make up of the album, along with programmed drum kit using Steven Slate Drums 5. The original comes off to me as improvisation based, aside from the main line in the beginning and a few chord changes and the modulation up a whole step. So I decided to do an improvisation on this track using those points as anchors and trying to do my own take on what I felt based on the title of the original track. I also wanted to add a sense of calmness or relaxation to some sections for the #SoundoleChillOut2022 contest.

The composition of the pieces and arranging for smaller chamber ensembles with live instrumentation really appeal to me. This track has a nice melody and I enjoy the brisk pacing of the chord progression, so I had a fun time arranging this for piano.
Also, I had the opportunity to record on this grand piano! Cool, right? I do not own this piano (so thanks to my friend who let me play on it), and I actually recorded this in the same session as recording the piano for The Merciless Savior medley that I was working on at the time and that will come out on this channel eventually... so look forward to that!

There will be other videos coming out eventually from up to a couple years back as it happens.
For this video, I wanted to feature this synth entirely, the Sequential OB-6, and all sounds in the arrangement come from this synth, aside from the post additions of reverb and mixing of course. Also the video takes here are the actual takes of me recording the audio that is used in the arrangement, which isn't usually the case.

Arrangement, performance: Justin ThornburghStar Ocean: The Second Story - Weathercock (Clarinet and Sax Arrangement) ft. Warp Whistles MusicJustin Thornburgh Music2022-02-16 | I recently got access to a tenor and a bari sax and this is the first video featuring them. I've really enjoyed getting to know the lower voices of the saxophone family. I feel like they have re-contextualized how I perceive the higher instruments as well as it being super fun to play really low notes.
In this arrangement I had fun layering the original woodwind parts in Weathercock on top of one another in different ways and hopefully creating a cool take on it. I am particularly happy with how the bass clarinet and bari sax power chord sound turned out in the recording as well.
Thanks a bunch to Warp Whistles Music (youtube.com/c/WarpWhistlesMusic) for playing clarinet and bass clarinet in this arrangement! Since I knew she is a big Star Ocean 2 fan and with this Pixel Mixer's monthly contest's theme being 'sequels', I thought it would be fun to put together a woodwind ensemble arrangement from SO2.

Arrangement: Justin Thornburgh Soprano Sax, Alto Sax, Clarinet, Accordion: Justin ThornburghCeleste - First Steps (Orchestral Re-Imagining)Justin Thornburgh Music2022-01-17 | I started this arrangement planning to eventually perform in on saxophones and accordion. I wrote out the original parts for 3 soprano saxes, 3 altos, and an accordion. When that was finished I thought about expanding it a tad to include bass voices and marimba which I though fit the tone. So I added two bass voices which optimistically would have been bari sax and bass clarinet, but with some of the rhythms in the arrangement I was uneasy about giving those parts to players lest I incur their wrath.
Meanwhile I also thought the arrangement would be cool with strings, so I started orchestrating it with VSTs (Spitfire Chamber Strings and Studio Woodwinds). At first I didn't think it was going to work but then I started liking it more and more. So that makes this my first orchestral arrangement where I orchestrated something retroactively rather than writing the parts after having decided on the full instrumentation ahead of time which is what I usually do. Anyways enough of this rambling. Regarding the style of this arrangement - would a fan of First Steps enjoy this arrangement? Who knows, I just made it because it was fun.

This is a very lovely piece from the new Tales of Arise soundtrack which features a lot of live recorded orchestra and rock band performances of which the original Land of Green track is a member of. For this arrangement I have transcribed the original full orchestral arrangement down into a five piece reed quintet instrumentation, trying to keep the notes and harmonies, dynamics, and tempo very close to the original. As for the instruments in this arrangement, it is a tad top heavy in range - soprano sax, clarinet, and oboe all being soprano instruments, the alto sax being a bit below them, and then the bass clarinet being tasked with holding the low end all by itself. Because of this, when trying to get a full sound, I had the clarinet and alto sax playing pretty close to the bottom of their ranges. However throughout the arrangement I enjoyed trying to constantly change the tone color/timbre of the harmonies by switching the lead instrument and voicing chords differently. This instrument group is flexible in that regard with the higher four instruments having similar range, and there are some chords where the alto sax and clarinet are playing notes above the soprano sax and oboe.

Arranged by Justin ThornburghTherion, the Thief - Octopath Traveler (Sax and Synth Arrangement)Justin Thornburgh Music2021-12-02 | I originally planned to do a simple saxophone and piano arrangement of this theme since I learned and was practicing Therion's motif as a part of learning the soprano sax. The soprano is definitely harder than the alto sax, and the audio you hear in this video is a result of a nice helping of take editing and timing adjustments. Surprisingly my intonation wasn't too bad though.
This cover was fun to play, since I basically didn't plan anything and just sort of improvised the parts (aside from the sax and synth main melody) over the chord progression. So it was fun and simple to make. It's one of the few single evening recordings I've done recently.

For this one I really felt like I couldn't do something similar to the original and be satisfied, but I thought this melody and atmosphere would work well in an electronic arrangement. With my extensive recent listening to Taishi (one of my new favorite artists in general), Nhato, and zts, I've tried taking inspiration from their styles and especially zts's like stars arrangement for this track, along with some nice ole silly odd meters. In this one, most non-percussion sounds come from the Sequential OB-6.

Arrangement, production, performance, mixing: Justin ThornburghStar Ocean: Till the End of Time - Lively Step (Piano Arrangement)Justin Thornburgh Music2021-11-11 | This track is basically the theme for the town of Peterney from Star Ocean 3. I love the orchestration of the original track which doesn't come through at all in this piano version, but it has nice melody and energy either way. I was planning to cover this on accordion but the but the bridge part with Ab - Bb - C - F - F# - Ab chords etc. just wasn't happening on tempo. Also sorry about how "lively" my keyboard is moving around in this video. It could definitely use a more sturdy stand.
Also yes, I do plan on covering some Star Ocean 6 music here soon...

I decided to try going in a different direction and I kind of just let the arrangement go where it wanted and how I felt like playing. And so it turned out much less calm and more dark and weird.
This was also a first for more complex and granular sound design for me. I did some sampling of the MatrixBrute and Prophet Rev2 to create the percussion and sound effects which was a cool process and one that I will definitely be using going forward.
As with Dreamy and Boisterous Holy Land, this is the other track I did for the We Also Love Trails in the Sky tribute album. Check out the whole album here! - youtu.be/pviJOfWVcXQ And once again thanks to R-Man for organizing this album!

Sheldon Kreger, R-Man, PeterWagstaffJustin Thornburgh Music2021-08-30 | I had my eye on this track for a while, even before playing the game. I always thought it would be a fun track to cover, but I wasn't even sure if it would be possible to play.
When R-Man started organizing a Trails in the Sky tribute album I figured it was time to put in the work to play this one. I covered this very close to the original since my arrangement idea was essentially, "perform the parts at all" since that would be cool enough.
And on top of that I managed to find other musicians who were willing to collaborate on this track! Thanks a bunch to Sheldon Kreger for the drums, Peter Wagstaff for the bass guitar, and R-man for the guitar solo!

So here's an accordion, alto sax, and soprano sax cover of White the Heart from Star Ocean 2.

I did this arrangement for the Pixel Mixer's rain forest themed album Heartwood. I wanted to blend warm synthesizer tones with a quartet of wind and string instruments and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Zohar Emulator, Myrddin TriguelJustin Thornburgh Music2021-07-30 | This is my take on Decisive Battle I and all eight of the For... tracks from Octopath Traveler! Huge thanks to Zohar Emulator and Myrddin Triguel for playing guitar and bass guitar on this arrangement!
Tracks: 0:00 Decisive Battle I 2:24 For Truth (Cyrus) 2:39 For Master (H'aanit) 2:57 For Light (Ophilia) 3:15 For Succor (Alfen) 3:39 For Redemption (Olberic) 3:56 For Treasure (Tressa) 4:20 For Freedom (Therion) 4:44 For Revenge (Primrose) 5:30 Decisive Battle I
What makes the For... tracks special is that there is one per character and they all end with a transition that flows seamlessly into the beginning of all of the boss battle tracks.
In this medley I've sandwiched the eight For... tracks inside of two Decisive Battle I arrangements. Decisive Battle I is my favorite track in the game, and I had a lot of fun arranging and playing this version!
When considering what to do for the eight For... tracks medley, there is already the idea of a sort of timbre motif, or instrument motif, where an instrument's sound is chosen to represent a character from the game. Not all characters here have one, and the ones that do aren't even always used in their original For... track, but I wanted to use this idea here:
For Truth (Cyrus) - Cyrus' theme is a waltz played by the strings. For Truth keeps the 3/4 time signature, but there isn't really a particular instrument I'd associate with Cyrus, so I ended up with a weird spooky synth lead.
For Master (H'aanit) - H'aanit's theme is a piano solo, and I could have used piano, but I didn't use piano. Instead it is funky.
For Light (Ophilia) - Ophilia's instrument is the flute, featured both in Ophilia's theme and For Light. I kept that instrument in my version and added some extra flute melody in the body of this section of the medley.
For Succor - (Alfen) - Alfen's instrument is the saxophone (I think it's an alto but maybe a soprano?) It plays both in his theme and in For Succor, however in For Succor it is hard to tell that it is a saxophone and sounds more like an oboe which lead me to believe it was Therion's track for a time. I kept the saxophone and this is the first recording of me playing the alto saxophone I've used in an arrangement!
For Redemption (Olberic) - Olberic's theme doesn't really have a particular instrument. I was thinking of trying to highlight the french horn as a key instrument in this section since I could see the it being associated with this atmosphere of epic redemption but my VST blended pretty badly with the rest of the instruments here. So I went with metal.
For Treasure (Tressa) - Tressa's instrument is the harmonica, an awesome sounding little free read aerophone. It's possible I could have found someone to play the harmonica melody for me, but I just happen to already play another free read aerophone, the accordion. So I used the musette register on my accordion along with the original string parts which probably makes this section sound most like the original.
For Freedom (Therion) - Therion's theme is played on a oboe, a cool choice for his character. For Freedom actually doesn't use any oboe, but I've taken the melody and put it on my oboe VST in this section. Also I wanted a shift from the previous section's string focus to a woodwind focus here, and along with that some polyrhythms and wub wub synth bass clarinet bassoon appeared.
For Revenge (Primrose) - I don't associate one particular instrument with Primrose but her theme and For Revenge feature strummed acoustic guitar. However in the medley I decided to do a sort of electronic music inspired section. The transition section of For Revenge is extended and used as a riser that resolves back into the return of Decisive Battle I.
