SeaWorld Removes Plastic Straws and Shopping Bags from Parks SeaWorld® 2018-11-15 | At SeaWorld, we’re challenging YOU to save our friends! Did you know that the SeaWorld rescue team brings animals in every day to be treated for implications due to the plastic in our waters? Plastic straws, bottles shopping bags, and anything else made of plastic are serious threats to ocean wildlife. More than 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean every day. Our aquatic friends can mistake plastic for food, which causes great harm to their health. They can also get tangled up in plastic objects, which can cause them major discomfort or even make them drown. The question we run into is how can we prevent this? Well by avoiding single-use plastic straws, shopping bags, and other unnecessary plastic items we can help save the lives of our animal friends who call the ocean their home. SeaWorld Helps Restore 37 Million Gallons Of Water To The Everglades SeaWorld® 2018-11-15 | SeaWorld teamed up with The Coca-Cola Company, Audubon Florida, and The Everglades Foundation to replenish freshwater in the drying Everglades. The Everglades is a very unique, but productive environment that caters to those around it. Stephen Davis, Senior Ecologist for The Everglades Foundation, tells us that the joint effort in restoring the Everglades helped individuals understand not only the value of water in our everyday human lives and landscapes but also to places such as the Everglades where invasives have taken over. By removing the harmful invasives and putting natural vegetation back in, the project will restore 37 million gallons of water to the Everglades. The partnerships allowed the word to spread about the drying environment and the need to replenish it. It also strengthened The Everglades Foundation’s voice for the need for conservation methods in the ecosystem. SeaWorld’s partnership has been a vital part of the project and helped inspire the building of Infinity Falls. The Amazing Journey Of Tyonek - A Stranded Beluga Calf Rescued By SeaWorld SeaWorld® 2018-11-14 | Meet Tyonek, a rescued beluga calf found stranded in Cook Inlet, Alaska. We are so proud and thankful to be part of the team who have helped him grow and develop. Tyonek was found at one-month-old stranded in Alaska. The Alaska SeaLife Center was able to rescue and rehabilitate the beluga calf and NOAA determined Tyonek was unable to live and survive in the wild which is when SeaWorld stepped in. SeaWorld San Antonio was named Tyonek's new home where he is thriving. Life-Saving Sea Turtle Surgery At SeaWorld Orlando SeaWorld® 2018-06-08 | Today, our veterinarian team conducted emergency surgery on Colin, a rescued sea turtle, with plastic debris lodged in his intestines. According to international research, more than 50% of sea turtles have ingested some form of plastic. Killer Whale Research and Conservation Program | SeaWorld SeaWorld® 2018-03-20 | The Southern Resident killer whale has been listed as endangered since 2005, and today only 78 animals remain in the Pacific Northwest. Human activity and a sharp decrease in populations of Chinook salmon, the whale’s main food source, continue to hinder its recovery.In response, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, SeaWorld, Shell, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration partnered to create the Killer Whale Research and Conservation Program, a public-private partnership to aid in the recovery of this iconic species. By funding projects that address salmon research, and monitoring of killer whale health and habitat restoration, the partnership seeks to increase the killer whale population off the coast of Washington state.
