Yoko Kanno - Memory - Randy George - theremin and motion controlled sequence Randy George 2022-05-12 | This is a live performance of one of my favorite themes by composer Yoko Kanno for the 1998 anime series Cowboy Bebop. Memory was originally orchestrated for music box. I arranged the piece for theremin and motion controlled MIDI polyphonic expression sequence. I perform the melody voice using theremin pitch in my right hand, while harmony voices, dynamics and timing are controlled by my left hand. The left hand moves through the sequenced harmony by alternating wrist rotation gestures.My performance rig hosts a Cycling '74 Max patch that receives changes in motion from my Z1 ring controller and steps through a MIDI chord sequence that gets reconstructed into streams of MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) compliant MIDI allowing for a continuous polyphonic performance and a single synth destination.All sound in this performance setup was amplified by the La Voix du Luthier Onde resonator. The Onde transforms electronic instruments like the theremin and EaganMatrix synth into acoustic instruments like a guitar or cello. I have been a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda since forever. It was fitting that I create some kind of cover of the main theme on the theremin. In 2006, that’s exactly what I did. It was my second upload to YouTube! Many years passed and I leveled up. I had pretty strong feelings that my original cover was not representative of my abilities and that it did not show the instrument in the best light… So around 2015, I unlisted my Zelda cover video on YouTube… My thinking at the time was that I would soon replace it with a remake. That didn’t happen. I’m not going explain. It made sense to me. Several years later, it’s 2021. We’re in the back half of a global pandemic, and you’re here reading this… It’s time.There is a lot going on in the background to make this video possible. All three instruments you see are functioning as expressive MIDI interfaces for a fourth instrument, the Haken ContinuuMini (not shown in video) and its built-in synthesis engine, the EaganMatrix. With this system, there is a universe of sound possibility. Your mind would be blown to bits if I tried to explain it here, but it’s sufficed to say the EaganMatrix can produce any sound imaginable. It is connected to a Teensy-micro-controller-based Control Voltage to MIDI interface.AKAI EWI4000s wind controller. It is connected to a standard MIDI interface.Piezo Drum. (my construction). It is made up of a inverted plastic storage container, a piezo contact microphone, two pencils as drum sticks, and it's connected to an audio interface and Audio-MIDI translation software I wrote called MIDI Merlin.All three interfaces route MIDI messages to an additional software interface I designed, called Haken’s Razor, that formats incoming data into MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) compliant MIDI, and outputs to the Haken ContinuuMini (via USB connection). Each instrument is coupled with a sound design in the EaganMatrix that is appropriate for its part in The Legend of Zelda theme arrangement. EaganMatrix sound presets used: [Wind] VBrass 2, [Wind] Saxmosis, [String] Vln Vla Cel Bass Bridge, [Sound Design] Wind Beach. Yes, it was a visual effect! 3D modeling, manual rotoscoping, and motion tracking/motion stabilization tricks were employed to pull this off. A LED array with animated text was projected on to a manually rotoscoped 3D visor, that was subsequently composited with the original footage using motion trackers in After Effects. The helmet itself took three days to make. I used 7 layers of card stock/normal stock paper strips in a special heavy mix paste recipe. The shape was built around a custom mold of shipping foam and gaffers tape. It was finished off with gunmetal grey paint. The visor was made of plastic cut from a microwave oven splash cover I found at Target for 5 dollars, laminated on both sides with Limo dark auto window tinting. I could see out, but the translucent plastic from the microwave splash cover along with the heavy tinting made it a little bit difficult. On the inside, the helmet was padded with custom cut felt blocks to fit my head size perfectly. The total weight was around 0.5 Kg (about 1 pound).This video was made for love. Please share it.
