It’s been a while!I hope you enjoy another “Back on Track” music video. “Percy’s Seaside Trip” has always been one of my favorite Thomas songs, and after all the fun I had making “Thomas’ Anthem”, I suddenly felt inspired to make another music video for this Summer. There are lots of Thomas songs I would still like to cover, but this was the one that excited me the most, so I decided to fast-track it onto my list of projects! (Plus, this is also my mom’s favorite Thomas song. She sings it every time we drive past a beach on vacation, so I knew I’d have to make a video for it eventually haha).These music videos are definitely some of my favorite projects to work on. They take way less time to make than full episodes, and they give me the opportunity to build all kinds of sets and film a whole bunch of wacky, unusual footage I wouldn’t normally film otherwise. Plus, they give me a chance to dig out and show off my collection of trains, action figures, 3D-printed models, and even some old Thomas merchandise from when I was a kid.This one has LOTS of specially-shot footage, TONS of new models and props, and plenty of BIG surprises along the way! I hope you all enjoy it!“Thomas’ Anthem” is a very obvious choice for an anniversary music video - there are a lot of other songs I could have picked. However, the reason why I chose to make a music video to this song goes a little deeper.“Best of Thomas” was the first Thomas DVD I ever received when I was 2 or 3. According to my parents, they showed me the Sing-Along Songs in the bonus features before I had even watched the episodes. So I think it’s safe to assume that “Thomas’ Anthem” was the very first piece of Thomas media I ever saw. I thought it was only fitting to celebrate the 80th with a music video that showcases my very best work from my YouTube series, set to the song that was my first exposure to the world of Thomas and his friends.I worked very hard to find the best footage from my series and to film lots of brand-new footage for this video, complete with a recreation of the opening shot from “Thomas Gets Bumped”, which is likely the first Thomas shot I ever saw as a kid - the shot in which Thomas puffs along his branchline, looking mildly concerned lol.It’s crazy to think how much this franchise has affected my life - all because I got one little DVD and Wooden Railway set for Christmas as a kid. From a lifelong interest in trains, to discovering my passion for filming and editing, to collaborating with new friends around the world, to simply having a wonderful, comforting TV show to grow up with - the list goes on and on. I have lots of good memories listening to this song on repeat on our “Pixar’s Greatest Hits” CD. But ever since I was a kid, I always imagined a Thomas-themed version of the song. The Missing Coach - COMPLETE EPISODE | Thomas & Friends: Back on Track | Episode 6 (NOT FOR KIDS) Sooty Will 2024-07-27 | Have you ever wondered why “The Missing Coach” was so confusing in The Railway Series? It’s because it was all LIES! When Douglas misplaced the Special Coach, it caused a lot of trouble for James, Thomas, and Sir Topham Hatt - not to mention the huge trick the twins played on The Inspector! Will Douglas be able to rescue the Special Coach in time for The Express? Find out what REALLY happened in Episode #6 of Thomas & Friends: Back on Track!_______________________________________________________________________________________________*(SPOILERS AHEAD)*It’s finally, FINALLY here! After F I V E YEARS!!If I can be dramatic for a moment, this episode has been in ‘production hell’ for years, at least as far as Thomas YouTube videos are concerned. I wrote the first draft and started filming in 2019, but I was never sure how I wanted the episode to play out. In the draft version, the climax of the episode was Douglas chasing after James, catching up to him at Elsbridge, and then bringing the coach back to Tidmouth. Womp womp. Pretty anticlimactic, and it didn’t warrant a nice, ‘storybook’ ending with all the engines in the shed together.I realized that I was essentially making an incomplete story. “The Missing Coach” in The Railway Series is the second part of a longer story, and trying to make it into a standalone episode, told to Edward and Percy as flashback, felt hollow to me. I then got completely sidetracked with a much more exciting episode idea, that being “Diesel To The Rescue,” as well as “Little Engine Who Believed,” and “Character Gallery” over the past year, so this episode has been completely sidelined since 2022.It was only last Summer, a few days after I finished “Diesel To The Rescue,” that I reimagined the entire plot during a single car ride on vacation. This included the demonstration with the Inspector, TWO tender swaps, bargaining with James, the crash, the chase, and putting Douglas at the heart of the story. At that point, I felt like I would be able to rewrite the episode with lots of jokes, a bit of action, a fun climax, and most importantly, a lot more heart and emphasis on Douglas that was sorely lacking in my draft version.I decided to totally diverge from the original story and just go all-out wacky - with a bit of inspiration from “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Back To The Future: Part 2.” I knew I wouldn’t be able to top “Diesel To The Rescue” in terms of action, so I really tried to go for the laughs in this episode. Some of the jokes I’ve had in my system since 2019! I had to cut out SO much banter between the engines just to keep the story moving, but I still hope it gives you some laughs! This is the most fun I’ve had writing and narrating a video yet.This episode isn’t nearly as crazy or as big a spectacle as “Diesel To The Rescue,” but it definitely has the most sets, the most shots, the most narration, and the most editing work put into it. However, I didn’t want to upload a bunch of random 30s-1min videos, so I decided to add a twist…I originally wanted to have thumbnails appear on-screen that would link to individual videos for each engine, but Youtube only allows thumbnail links during the last 20 seconds of a video. I really enjoy making music videos that recap stories, like my “Holding Out For a Hero” music video with Balto last year. I have nice memories of watching it on the “Steamies VS Diesels” DVD, so I figured, why not give it a song? I always liked when Mike and Junior did songs based on random episodes, like “Once Was an Engine Who Ran Away." It was a bit of a challenge to summarize the episode in 2-3 minutes with only a couple of verses, but lots of fun to figure out. When I recorded the temp vocals myself, I found this one very difficult to sing, but Jack handled it no problem and improved many verses that I struggled to write. I hope you enjoy another Thomas parody - this time about Donald and Douglas, two of my favorite characters!I really enjoy The Proclaimers, and when I realized I could rework their most famous song to be about two twins, I knew I was going to have to do it at some point. Donald and Douglas only have a handful of episodes, so I had to use every bit of footage I could find and get a bit crafty with the editing. Rewriting the lyrics was surprisingly easy! I only had to change a couple lines to fit the Thomas context.I want to give a HUGE thank you to Andrew Durning, AKA @TheGingerEngine for recording the vocals for this song! He was able to record the song twice over for the lead and backing vocals respectively. He improved on many of the rhythms I struggled with writing, and gave an excellent performance! (what is this, my third video starring him?)This parody idea came to me on a whim, and at first I didn’t think it was worth making into a video. Then one day I just decided to go for it, and managed to write, record, and edit the whole thing in 2-3 weeks. At first I didn’t want to make the video because I didn’t think there would be enough footage, but the more I looked, the more episodes I found! “Disappearing Diesels,” “The Case of the Puzzling Parts,” “Diesel Glows Away” - there was a surprising amount of episodes about Diesel hiding or being in disguise. I came up with this story sometime in 2022, and filmed the first half of the episode during that Summer while “Animal Names” was on hiatus. I shot most of the second half during the Christmas holidays, then wrapped up the last chunk as soon as “Animal Names” was finished. Thank you all again SO MUCH for the overwhelming support recently. The huge response to Ep 4 is what motivated me to finish the last section of this one.This was hands-down the most complex and daunting video project I’ve ever made, but I had a real blast filming and editing. It was SO hard to keep this one a secret and not spoil anything while I was finishing Ep 4. I honestly don’t know how I will ever top this as far as my Thomas episodes go.In terms of future episodes, I have a “spooky” themed episode in progress, starring Duck, and several others I teased in my outdated “Complete Episode List”, including “The Missing Coach”, “The Runaway,” “Gordon Gets Going,” and so on. I didn’t have a single person pester me about when this episode would be finished, even when I took time away from it to work on other episodes, parody music videos, and so on. Balto has actually been on my channel banner for a long time now!The in-joke with this music video was that “Holding Out For A Hero” was originally written for the movie “Footloose,” which ALSO stars Kevin Bacon as the main character. One evening, I had Lou Bega’s song in my head, but I only knew the tune and not the lyrics. For some reason, perhaps because it was a jazz song, I started picturing James puffing down the tracks. I couldn’t figure out why it fit so well, but then I realized I could turn “Mambo Number Five” into “ENGINE Number Five,” and the rest, as they say, is history.Of my three parody songs so far (shameless plug), this one has definitely been the most difficult. The original has a tricky rhythm in the opening verse, and rewriting a song about women into a song about a talking train, and still have it rhyme, more or less, with the original was not easy. Happy Wile E. Wednesday!Following the early release of my short film, "Back to the Drawing Board" this past Friday, I decided to quickly bump up the short's progression reel on my video schedule.The first section of this video features my original (very crude) storyboards for the short. I admit that these were only finished halfway through production instead of at the very beginning like my shot list (see the Behind-The-Scenes PDF). Due to time (and my inability to draw a coyote, a roadrunner, OR a car from scratch), I was actually in the middle of animating my shots before I had the chance to draw them. Regardless, I thought it would be fun to include them. In future, I will definitely make sure to finish storyboarding a video project before jumping into production.The second section features the raw AVI footage without any visual effects from post-production. You'll notice how I cropped several shots, overlaid pieces of the background, and even used the chroma-key for some of the traveling shots. Some of the visual effects included strikes of lightning, the "time portal" effect, the "shake" effect, headlights, and lasers.Finally, the finished video can be seen in the third section for comparison. I also removed the music during the "chase" sequence to give you an idea of the short film's sound design. At the end of our video production / animation unit, I was given the chance to put this sucker together in about two weeks... which just so happened to be one week over the deadline, but my teacher said it was okay… and I ended up getting 100/100 on the assignment anyways. 😎Wile E Coyote and Road Runner have been two of my favorite characters since I was a kid. I have very pleasant memories of watching their cartoons on the 2nd Golden Collection over and over again. “Back to the Future” is also one of my absolute favorite movies when I first watched it in 2018.
