Earning a scholarship to Leeds School of Art, she met a young Henry Moore and the two quickly established a friendly rivalry that saw them pave the way for modernist sculpture.While early works were characterized by abstraction in marble or stone, time spent in St Ives led to a broader repertoire of wood and bronze, as well as figurative work closely related to that of her contemporary, Moore. A STORY OF GOLDMARK: 50 Years A Shop Like No Other | goldmarkart.com Goldmark Gallery 2023-06-02 | The year 2023 sees Goldmark Gallery in Uppingham celebrate a full 50 years since its founder Mike Goldmark arrived in the town and went into partnership running a bookshop in what is now Costa Coffee. It had been a circuitous route to Uppingham. Mike’s previous jobs included selling dog food and double glazing. He had been a fixture in both Savile Row and Carnaby Street (when it was still swinging), known as a creator and purveyor of the kipper tie. Indeed, the legendary writer Byron Rogers anointed Mike Goldmark ‘the Floral Tie King of England’. Mike, with an emphasis on the warm, welcoming, informal customer service that remains the bedrock of Goldmark today, turned the failing shop into a book-lover’s paradise. He became sole owner, and moved to Orange Street in 1974. The first gallery wing was added in 1985, but, in those early years, book buying and selling was Mike’s overriding passion. People travelled from all over the country – and beyond – to find rare first editions, prized anthologies and undiscovered treasures. In 1986 Mike’s passion saw him expand into publishing, including Iain Sinclair’s first novel, ‘White Chappell, Scarlet Tracings’.Art and ceramicsGoldmark Gallery’s first art show was by Leicestershire-based artist Rigby Graham in 1987. Up until that date Graham had, by his own count, held 42 unsuccessful solo shows. Neither Mike Goldmark nor Rigby Graham would have been suited to a career in the diplomatic service, but the two sparked off each other creatively, and Graham’s reputation grew – he was made an MBE in 2010. Graham died in 2015, but his work is still on regular show, sharing room with over 50,000 works of art owned by the gallery – a collection that includes, amongst others, Picasso, John Piper, Graham Sutherland, Anthony Gross and Matisse.Goldmark’s book- and art shops ran side by side for a decade, and Mike never fell out of love with books or publishing – indeed the gallery is a thriving publisher today. However, the 2000s saw a major change in the book-buying public and a harder edge develop in the book world. Mike closed the bookshop arm of the business in 2005.That same year Goldmark held its first ceramics exhibition. It showcased the great Phil Rogers – another plain speaker, who, like Mike Goldmark, was ever generous with both his heart and his time. Since then Goldmark Gallery has set new standards for ceramics exhibitions. It has adopted a cadre of some of the most respected potters from around the world and provided them with the support and security to develop great work. Gallery potters such as Lisa Hammond MBE, Kang-hyo Lee, Mike Dodd and Jean-Nicolas Gérard have few equals. Phil Rogers died in 2020, but his legacy lives on. In May the gallery will be displaying previously unseen pots by Rogers, whilst in September his former apprentice Anne-Mette Hjortshøj returns to the gallery to show new work in what will be one of the most eagerly awaited shows of the global ceramics’ calendar.Uppingham, films, printmaking, framing – and making the newsThere is barely room here to touch on Mike’s refurbishment of Uppingham spaces for independent retailers, which has made a major contribution to the character and appeal of Uppingham today. We must also mention Goldmark Films (thrice nominated for awards by the Royal Television Society), the printmaking Goldmark Atelier and the bespoke and nationally recognised framing service. There is a perfect illustration of the risk-taking and dedication to talent that underscores the Goldmark charisma. In 1997 Mike Goldmark discovered a poet called Aidan Andrew Dun. Never one to do things by halves, he published Dun’s epic poem ‘Vale Royal’ and, amazingly, hired the Albert Hall to promote it. Rosie Millard, then the BBC arts correspondent and now, among other roles, Chair of BBC Children in Need, recalls the event: ‘The Return of the Reforgotten was, in essence, never to be forgotten. An epic night, day, 24 hours featuring Aidan Andrew Dun, Allan Ginsberg, Benjamin Zephaniah and a horde of others, including Paul McCartney reading, singing and dancing to their work. It was unstructured and rambling and completely wonderful. In this era of instant mediation it was unmediated and unique. And it made it onto the BBC news bulletins. Hoorah.’ 50 years: looking back and aheadMindful of how much it owes its heritage, Goldmark has just republished ‘Vale Royal’. However, despite this pause to celebrate 50 years, Goldmark Gallery’s focus remains firmly on the future. Art and ceramics exhibitions will light up 2023, and new books and films are in the pipeline on artists such as Anthony Gross and Oundle-based Richard James.Three generations of the Goldmark family are now part of the 30-strong Goldmark team – they are always looking out for new adventures, pathways and talent. Gordon House: Artist who worked on Beatles White album and Sergeant Pepper | GOLDMARK Goldmark Gallery 2023-05-19 | Gordon House (1932-2004) was an accomplished British artist and printmaker who is beginning to be regarded as one of the important figures in British printmaking in the latter half of the 20th century. Born in Pontardawe, South Wales, his family soon moved to Letchworth Garden City. The strict grids and geometry found in much of House’s art may have been inspired by the optimism and public spirit that guided the urban design of his hometown. After relinquishing her post as the Head of Ceramics at Kensington and Chelsea college to tackle an unprecedented demand for her work, Hirai has enjoyed knockout shows throughout the country, even through COVID season. Her latest will be a landmark exhibition at the Goldmark Gallery, opening March 27th. Born in Japan, where she studied for a degree in psychology, Hirai discovered her love of clay in the UK almost by accident. Arriving in her late 20s, she initially worked as a volunteer with the homeless. When the stresses of the job eventually took their toll, Hirai enrolled on a beginners’ pottery course under British ceramicist Chris Bramble. He encouraged her to apply to the University of Westminster, from which she transferred to Central Saint Martins. The last 18 years she has spent in the very same studio space she took immediately after her graduation in 2003. Pottery is now Hirai’s first love: ‘It makes me happy,’ she says simply, but profoundly, though psychology still informs all that she does. For Hirai, everything is interconnected: language, thoughts, feelings and objects all come together in the everyday interactions of our lives. At the core of her practice is an exquisite range of Kohiki domestic ware, thrown and faceted pots made from dark clay with a rough veneer of white slip. In Japan, where it was first developed by 16th century Korean potters, Kohiki is considered a ‘soft’ ceramic: though high-fired stoneware, its surface is slightly porous. Like leather or brass, with use and age Kohiki changes colour, its delicate white skin blushing with an acquired patina particular to its owner. For Hirai, that connection with the user is vital: ‘My pots are not finished when they come out of the kiln,’ she says: ‘This is just the start of their journey.’ Wood ashes, often given by friends or specially sourced, are responsible for the extraordinary shifting colours across Hirai’s exhibitions, from deep olive glazes to palest blues, lending narrative and flavour to each new show. Among the many beautiful forms joining her domestic range are her Moon jars, contemporary versions of centuries-old vessels native to Korea, examples of which she drew inspiration from in the British Museum. Hirai’s relationship with Japanese pottery remains complex. Though much of her work draws upon a Japanese aesthetic, what she has channelled from the pots of her home country she has learnt from remote guesswork, analysis and emulation. Though it was in Japan that Hirai was first exposed to pots, it is in the UK, away from Japan’s formal pottery traditions, where she has been able to find her individual voice. That distinctiveness has transformed into deep public appeal and institutional recognition. Collections holding Hirai’s pots include the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Fitzwilliam in the UK, the National Museum of Ireland, and further abroad Germany’s distinguished Keramikmuseum Westerwald and New York’s Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse. Goldmark, with its major international ceramics audience, hopes to extend that appetite for Hirai’s work. ‘My wife has been quietly smuggling pots home by Akiko Hirai for over a decade now’ comments gallery founder Mike Goldmark, ‘so I am delighted to be making our admiration of her work official with this show. Henri Matisse: Florilège Des Amours De RonsardMatisse was born in 1869 in Northern France. By 1891 he had abandoned his law degree and started to paint. In Paris, Matisse studied art briefly at the Académie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He embraced a new range of influences, abandoning the Impressionistic palette and establishing his own style with brilliant colour and fluid line. His subjects were primarily women, interiors, and still lifes.From the early 1920s until 1939, Matisse divided his time between the South of France and Paris. While recuperating from two major operations in 1941 and 1942, he concentrated on a technique he had devised earlier, ‘papiers découpés’ (paper cutouts), which would prove hugely influential, and was one of the first painters to take an interest in “primitive” art. He died on November 3, 1954, in Nice.Original lithograph in sanguine ink.This now very rare suite was printed by Mourlot Frères in Paris on pure rag tinted wove Papeteries d’Arches paper in an edition of 320 sets only, of which 300 were for sale. We are so very grateful for your business.Welcome to the action-packed Goldmark review of 2022/3.We packed a lot into this year with exhibitions by Noel Brannan, Natsu Nishiyama, Christopher P Wood, Richard Batterham, Frank Dobson, Nic Collins, Graham Sutherland, Sid Burnard, Martin Wenham, Morwenna Thistlethwaite, Jean-Nicolas Gérard, John Piper, Kang-hyo Lee and Marc Chagall.We also restored, and made a limited edition print of, Coventry Cathedral's great cartoon Christ in Glory by Graham Sutherland and exhibited several of Jacob Epstein's bronzes at the Cathedral, including Heroic Torso, one of Epstein's largest bronzes.Goldmark Atelier and Goldmark Framing have both had their most successful years to date. Our print workshop is internationally respected, making limited edition prints for artists and galleries worldwide and now publishing the next generation of great artists ourselves.Our in-house design and filmmaking teams were kept busy this year. Goldmark administer the Dobson estate and, like the forensic detectives they are, discovered moulds for never before editioned sculptures amongst original drawings. Goldmark commissioned, with the permission of the Estate, the Black Isle Bronze foundry In Scotland to cast editions of 28 sculptures - 21 of which have never been editioned before. They are the foundation of a wonderful new show from one of the most influential and important figures in 20th century British Sculpture, at Goldmark Gallery from 22nd October 2022. Frank Dobson was born in London, the son of an illustrator of the same name. His early work consisted mainly of paintings, the few surviving examples showing how impressed he was by Roger Fry’s Post-Impressionist exhibitions (Stanhope Forbes, whom Dobson met in Newlyn, had been shocked by his modernism). He made his first carving in 1913, but Dobson’s first one-man exhibition—at the Chenil Gallery, London, in 1914—consisted of paintings and drawings. After the First World War (when he served in France with the Artists’ Rifles), Dobson turned increasingly to sculpture, and had his first one-man exhibition as a sculptor in 1920, at the Leicester Galleries, London.In 1925 Roger Fry described his work as ‘true sculpture and pure sculpture … almost the first time that such a thing has been even attempted in England’. His work Cornucopia was described by Clive Bell as ‘the finest piece of sculpture by an Englishman since—I don’t know when’. and Dobson’s sophisticated simplifications of form made him one of the pioneers of modern sculpture in Britain.Dobson was also outstanding as a portrait sculptor. He worked in various materials including bronze, terracotta, and stone, and he was prominent in the revival of direct carving. His craftsmanship in all these materials was superb and he played an important role as a liberal-minded and kind-hearted teacher at the Royal College of Art, where he was professor of sculpture from 1946 to 1953. He was made a CBE in 1947 and elected a Royal Academician in 1951. He died in London in 1963.Frank Dobson - New Bronzes is an exhibition not to be missed. He brings these bits and pieces back to his studio, and looks at them, and adjusts and assembles them until they cease to be mere stuff and become a thing: a bird, a beast, an insect, a boat; while at the same time their component parts cling to their original state as a lump of driftwood, a toothbrush, a bottle top. This is the land of miracles, where an object can be many things at once. Sam LlewellynSid Burnard was born in Brighton in 1948. Introduced to the art of beach combing by his Romany grandmother, Sid learnt to appreciate the beauty of nature from an early age. His time at Bristol Guild of Applied Arts gave him a profound understanding of visual arts and crafts and allowed him to put his personal vision into practice.He is now based in Wales, where the flotsam and jetsam from the nearby sea is his only source of materials. Working with found objects, nothing is changed - simply introduced to one another. Documentary showing the restoration of Graham Sutherland's Christ in Glory in the Tetramorph cartoon.Christ in Glory in the Tetramorph is a large tapestry by Graham Sutherland, installed at the north end of the new Coventry Cathedral in Coventry, England, as a focal point to the nave. It was unveiled in March 1962, shortly before the cathedral was consecrated in May 1962. Now the gallery is to hold a major exhibition of his work, from 21 May, to coincide with the publication of its stunning limited edition print of the great tapestry, Christ in Glory (in the Tetramorph), at Coventry Cathedral. The Cathedral marks its Diamond Jubilee at a special ceremony on 25 May and this print aims to raise £100,000 for the care of Sutherland’s masterpiece which continues to inspire and provoke awe in anyone who steps inside the Cathedral. http://goldmarkart.comGraham Sutherland [1903-1980] is widely considered one of the most important British artists of the 20th century. In addition to his extraordinary contribution to portraiture, public and religious commissions, and a much-lauded career as a painter in oils, Sutherland dedicated six decades of his life to printmaking and graphic design, resulting in a legacy of work that, despite its breadth, retains a powerfully unique voice.The Goldmark exhibition of original works and rarely seen prints will therefore give visitors to the gallery and goldmark.tv viewers the chance to see work which must rank among the most expressive and evocative that this country has produced, by an artist whose impact on British post-war art was immense. An exhibition walkthrough film hosted by Max Waterhouse will be available from 20 May.Goldmark Gallery and Coventry Cathedral first worked together in 2015 when Goldmark had the idea to produce screen prints of two of John Piper’s iconic paintings of the old Cathedral destroyed in the 1940 blitz of the city - painted on site whilst the Cathedral was still smouldering from the bombing. These prints have, to date, raised nearly £90,000 for Cathedral funds.More recently Goldmark has loaned Jacob Epstein’s bronze Heroic Torso for the Cathedral’s current exhibition of the great sculptor’s work. Heroic Torso, which has never previously been exhibited outside of the USA, can be seen at the Cathedral until 31 May.This limited edition print of Christ in Glory in the Tetramorph tapestry, created in Goldmark’s Atelier, will give buyers a chance to witness some of Great Tapestry’s majesty in their own home. The print is taken from Sutherland’s original illustration for the final Tapestry which has been hanging in the Lady Chapel at the west end of the Cathedral and which has been restored by the team at Goldmark. The Most Beautiful Art of Morwenna Thistlethwaite | Exhibition Walkthrough | GOLDMARK Goldmark Gallery 2022-04-15 | Morwenna Thistlethwaite was an artist virtually unknown outside the tiny district of St Ives where, from her mid-60s on, she lived and worked. Born in 1912 in Kew, at 14 Thistlethwaite met the painter Borlase Smart in Scotland, who suggested she study at the St Ives School founded by Leonard Fuller. She instead enrolled as a mature student at Leamington Spa Art College in 1938 for two years, and then Birmingham College of Art for four years during the war, where she was a prize-winning scholarship student. In 1976 Thistlethwaite relocated to an old family home in colloquial ‘Downalong’, Victoria Place, in the Mount Zion area of St Ives, and became a regular of the local art scene. Her subjects were typically imagined interior scenes, muted still lifes, or paintings of the world going by, tinged by a dreamlike, cryptic quality in the vein of Winifred Nicholson. The exhibition, called Look, That You May Hear Me, will be accompanied by a 64 page full colour catalogue with essay by Martin Wenham. There will be a walkthrough film of the exhibition available on goldmarkart.com and goldmark.tv 24/7 from 18 March and the exhibition coincides with the publication of Wenham’s seminal book The Art of Letter Carving in Wood published by Crowood at £25.Martin Wenham started with pen lettering as a child, inspired by his father who hand-wrote posters for 'DIG FOR VICTORY' after the war, when things were still on ration and food was short. He credits Edward Johnston's classic book, Writing & Illuminating & Lettering, for part of his lettering education. Wenham began his carving career in 1967 after being asked by a colleague at the research station where he was working to carve a house sign. A professional carver who worked there and who'd been made redundant from the furniture trade kindly showed him the basics and it all developed from there.These days my main focus is on the exploration of visual language: how meaning can be amplified and communicated through the visual form of what is read. The design and execution of the lettering, rather than an end in itself, is the means by which this exploration is pursued. What is perhaps rather unusual in my work is the extent to which the visual and tactile properties of the wood I work with contribute to, and even determine, the language I carve and the way I design the inscription. I particularly like working with wood whose history can be read, at least in part, such as offcuts, scrap and driftwood. He retired from teaching in 1983.His work is influenced by Neo-Romantics but in his colour he owes much to German Expressionism and he is considered one of the most important landscape painters of the late 20th century. The archive of his work, now at Manchester Metropolitan University, is a central resource for the study of landscape painting, lithographic and wood-cut printing, book illustration and production and private presses. Rigby died in May 2015 after a long illness.

Goldmark are delighted to be lending this and two other Epstein bronzes to Coventry Cathedral for their exhibition Stories in Stone from 19th March 2022 to 31st May 2022.By 1954 Epstein’s work had begun to receive ever-greater approval from his peers and the wider public sphere; the enfant terrible of British sculpture – a role he still inhabited at the grand age of 74 – had been deemed by many to have ‘grown up’, and a knighthood shortly followed the honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford extended to him the year before.This post-war period was dominated by huge, monumental sculptures, works that were now so great in height that Epstein’s studio in Hyde Park Gate could no longer fully house them and which were soon relocated to larger premises on Exhibition Road at the invitation of the Royal College of Art.Shortly before the move, Lord Woolton had approached Epstein with a commission from the directors’ of Lewis’s for their Liverpool department store. The city had been devastated by the bombing runs of The Blitz, with the Lewis’s shopfront being leveled in 1941, and it was generally felt that local services and businesses had never quite fully recovered from the upheaval. Epstein’s task was to revitalize the withered spirit of Merseyside and return something of the city’s former glory.Woolton’s brief was undoubtedly fulfilled: Liverpool Resurgent, a strident, muscular figure stood atop the prow of a ship, answered Lewis’s directorial board with perhaps more vigour than they might have intended, a select few critics even suggesting that the unbridled eroticism of the figurehead would cause passing schoolgirls to swoon.Certainly the work caused a stir amongst the Merseysiders at its 1956 unveiling. Introduced to clay at 13 during his time at Bryanston School, Batterham apprenticed at the Leach Pottery (where he met his wife, Dinah Dunn) before establishing his own studio in Dorset in 1959. He remained there for over seven decades, expanding his workshop and honing the exceptional range of wares that became so synonymous with his name they had no need for a potter's mark. His work earned him the esteem of major collectors, among them Sir David Attenborough and the food writer Nigel Slater, and is currently being celebrated this year with a major ongoing retrospective at the V&A Museum.The pots in this sale all come from the private collection of Mike Dodd, a lifelong friend of Batterham's and fellow Bryanston alumnus. They were bought over many years, to educate and inform Dodd's own work as silent teachers. Now, Dodd has decided to hand them on to the next generation of potters and collectors, in the hope that they might continue to speak and find appreciation.'For me,' Dodd writes, 'Richard was an exceptional potter whose like only comes along very occasionally. Rounded and unpretentious in his approach, he was constantly observing, learning and refining either the clay, the glazes or the way he made things. To coincide with the sale, we will be publishing a 64-page illustrated monograph with an essay by Dodd, and a portion of the proceeds will be going to charity.Richard Batterham (1936-2021) was one of the most respected post-war potters working in this country. Introduced to clay at 13 during his time at Bryanston School, Batterham apprenticed at the Leach Pottery (where he met his wife, Dinah Dunn) before establishing his own studio in Dorset in 1959. He remained there for over seven decades, expanding his workshop and honing the exceptional range of wares that became so synonymous with his name they had no need for a potter's mark. His work earned him the esteem of major collectors, among them Sir David Attenborough and the food writer Nigel Slater, and is currently being celebrated this year with a major ongoing retrospective at the V&A Museum.The pots in this sale all come from the private collection of Mike Dodd, a lifelong friend of Batterham's and fellow Bryanston alumnus. They were bought over many years, to educate and inform Dodd's own work as silent teachers. Now, Dodd has decided to hand them on to the next generation of potters and collectors, in the hope that they might continue to speak and find appreciation.'For me,' Dodd writes, 'Richard was an exceptional potter whose like only comes along very occasionally. Rounded and unpretentious in his approach, he was constantly observing, learning and refining either the clay, the glazes or the way he made things. His strong work ethic held a deep respect for potters from many cultures and gave us pots of unassuming and unselfconscious beauty and vitality. He insisted that the pots were not about him, but should reflect a deeper aliveness "to enrich and not to decorate". Christopher P Wood | Landscape Reimagined | GOLDMARK Goldmark Gallery 2022-02-23 | Wood wants us to become lost in every gestural twist and turn of his surfaces, he wants us to taste each mark with the tongue of our eye, to feel the haptic touch of each brushstroke as our gaze consumes the picture surface. He invites us to follow the quick flick of the wrist as it becomes a feather-like leaf, to notice the short staccato gestures that build a wall, or trace the languid, almost imperceptible drawing back and forth of the arm that allows long strokes of blue or grey to melt into a limpid sky. He deliberately allows us to see the twirling and twisting of the splayed soft bristles that suggests foliage and the precise line that delineates a trunk. He shows us the controlled, swift strokes he uses to create a body and the soft fleshy dab that conjures a face. But although Wood wants us to see his surfaces, he is not a modernist emphasising the nature of his paintings as objects or celebrating their physical manufacture or processes. Artist Noel Brannans daughter Jane Kennedy walks us through his Exhibition | GOLDMARK.TV Goldmark Gallery 2022-01-21 | Noel Brannan was born in Tynemouth, Northumberland on Christmas Day 1921. His family moved to Cleethorpes in 1926, where he grew up in a very art orientated household: His father, Edward Brannan was a professional artist and his younger brother Peter Brannan was to follow the same path. Noel Brannan studied at Lincoln School of Art from 1947-52 and at Leicester College of Art from 1951-52 before taking a teaching job at Hinckley. He and his family lived in Burbage from 1952 until his death in 2001. Jane Kennedy, Noel Brannan’s daughter recalls, ’His work remains as a monument to his longings and self-doubt, his skill and vision, his life, his love of the world around him, and his profound engagement with humanity’. She comments that throughout his life her father never ceased sketching, drawing and painting and adds that- ‘He liked industrial and agricultural landscapes, and many of his works are where human hands have been at work - like farm buildings, pit heads and the building of the M69’. The film and pop up will highlight the work Kennedy talks about and feature a mixture of oils, watercolour and pen and ink drawings of, for example, mines, tile works, industrial chimney stacks, quarries, factories, canals and wasteland. A fully illustrated catalogue, with essay by Sarah MacDougall and Rachel Dickson of the Ben Uri Gallery and Museum, will accompany the exhibition.Jankel Adler was one of many Jewish and Eastern European immigrant artists to come to Britain in the wake of the rise of Nazism. He was also among the most influential: his potent combination of cubist abstraction and expressionist angst profoundly inspired the younger generation of British artists he befriended before his premature death at the age of 53 in Aldbourne, Wiltshire.The work in this exhibition dates exclusively to this last decade of his life after his arrival in Scotland in 1940. Deeply moved by the invasion of his home country, Adler had joined the Polish Western Forces in France. Alongside thousands of Polish troops, he was evacuated during the Dunkirk campaign and directed to Glasgow, where he was demobbed on arrival due to a heart condition. Here he was reacquainted with fellow Polish artist Josef Herman, and in 1941 began exhibiting at the Annan Gallery and J.D. Fergusson’s New Art Club.After withdrawing for several months to the artists’ colony in Kirkcudbright, in 1943 Adler left Scotland and moved to a studio in Kensington, London, where he met the ‘Two Roberts’ Colquhoun and Macbryde. For young British painters not yet exposed to European modernism, Adler’s alternately vigorous and melancholic figure paintings and still lives left an indelible impression. In London he was also introduced to literary contemporaries (Samuel Beckett and Dylan Thomas among them) and united with other émigré artists from across the continent: Oskar Kokoschka, Kurt Schwitters, Martin Bloch and Ludwig Meidner.Born in Tuszyn, near the industrial city of Łódź, Adler was the eighth of twelve children. Prior to WWI he moved to Germany and trained as an artist, and in the early 1920s established himself in Düsseldorf, where he befriended Otto Dix and Paul Klee. In 1933 Adler joined fellow artists and lecturers in signing an Urgent Appeal against the rise of fascism in Germany, forcing him to flee as Hitler solidified his hold on the country. He left for France and briefly painted in exile in Cagnes-sur-Mer from 1938-40 before deciding to enlist. It was only after the war, in 1945, that he learned all eleven of his siblings had been killed by the fascists.Of the Goldmark Gallery’s first Adler exhibition, art historian Richard Cork wrote: ‘He was, above all, committed to telling the visual truth about a human race wracked by incessant warfare, deportation and the horrors of the concentration camps. That is why Adler’s achievement during these traumatic final years deserves to be fully recognised. ’Founder of the gallery Mike Goldmark, whose Austrian parents also fled the Nazis after the Anschluss, comments: ‘The legacy of Jankel Adler is extraordinary: not just the intensely moving pictures he left behind him, but the effect he had on mid-century British art, which can still be felt to this day. His work is rightly housed in the great international institutions. A new exhibition from 23rd October 2021 at Goldmark hopes to redress the balance. ‘…his paintings are far too little known… An extraordinarily lively observer, he made infectious through his work his joy in the round of activities of everyday life, in both town and country.’ – Richard Morphet, ex-Keeper of the Modern Collection at the Tate Gallery (1992) Born in 1905 to a Jewish-Hungarian mapmaker and an Irish-Italian suffragette, Gross spent his colourful life between London and the continent. Painter, printmaker, animator and illustrator, he is today best remembered for his work as an Official War Artist during the Second World War. One of the most prolific war artists, he landed in Normandy with the Allied troops on D-Day, holding his materials aloft as he waded ashore. Post-war, Gross would retire each summer to a house in Le Boulvé, leaving behind him an astonishing, decades-long record of the southwestern French landscape. He died in 1984. As an etcher, Gross was instrumental in driving the British printmaking revolution of the 1950s and ‘60s, inspiring the likes of David Hockney; as a painter, he is yet to be afforded the fame he is due. At a time when Abstract Expressionism was taking America by storm, Gross found a style of abstraction that was quite his own – one uniquely personal, and tied inextricably to the shapes and rhythms of the natural world around him. ‘I have bought, sold, and shown the work of Anthony Gross for as long as I have been trading,’ comments Mike Goldmark: ‘I am delighted now to be representing his estate. This will be the first in a series of major exhibitions introducing Gross to a new generation of admirers, underscoring his reputation as one of our greats. A Goldmark-produced book and film will soon follow suit.’ A feature-length documentary on the life and work of Anthony Gross is underway, to be released by Goldmark Films in 2022. This will be the Royal Television Society-nominated film unit’s 25th feature documentary, joining an impressive list of film shorts and regular weekly productions for goldmark.tv.

Teaching textile art followed from membership and participation with this group, then art teaching more generally. Alongside a growing interest in the needs of young people with multi-sensory impairment and the role of art, she then pursued a lengthy career both as a teacher and academic in the field at schools and universities. He was still a student then, living in his mother's home, and I was (he tells me) the first person to pay him real money for his work. Over the years I have continued to buy, and I now have a house full. In the last two decades Bancroft has become a feted filmmaker, with selections by Tacita Dean and in major international venues including the Pompidou. For me, he remains the best painter of his generation. A diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis has limited Bancroft's exhibiting in recent years. This is his first painting show in over a decade – work as fresh, beguiling and poignant as when I first saw it. It is with great pleasure that I commend his paintings to you.' Two years in the making, this new Goldmark film finds 93 year old veteran of abstraction Graham Boyd at work in his Hertfordshire studio. He talks about his life and inspiration; the early development of his painting into pure abstraction, the impact on his work of his time spent in Africa and America and his continuing artistic journey. http://goldmarkart.com‘Standing in front of his paintings we might feel just such variegations of mood and feeling. They are so alive, so unpredictable, so disconcerting, and, yes, so beautiful if we make them so.’ Mel Gooding ‘I am just curious about what is going to happen … what I can do with colour… I don’t want to do what I have done before … the main thing is to do what surprises me.’ Graham Boyd Goldmark has presented and sold the work of many classic abstract artists (from Kandinky to Miro to Caro to Hoyland) and of artists whose work deliberately incorporates alongside some kind of figuration the visual findings of abstraction (from Picasso to Matisse to Piper and Richards). It is of course the case that there are many ways in which geometric design, or artificial colour (heightened, say, or darkened, or exaggerated), or expressive brushwork and impasto, or chiaroscuro etc. − all by definition ‘abstract’ devices − are aspects of all kinds of figurative art throughout history. All art is in some sense an abstraction from observed actuality. This exhibition nonetheless, constitutes a significant moment for the gallery: for Graham Boyd is an artist utterly committed to pure abstraction, the first such artist to be ‘represented’ by Goldmark. Graham Boyd spent two years in what was then Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in the early 1950s and the dramatic scale of the African landscape had a profound impact on his perception of space and its representation. In the 1960s and 70s he discovered acrylic and Boyd now works exclusively in that medium. These experiences and discoveries powered his decisive move away from his studies in illustration and early incarnations as a figurative and landscape painter, towards the use of form and colour as expressive means in their own right. In 1976 he was appointed as Head of Painting at the Hertfordshire College of Art and Design, St. Albans. As a principal Lecturer, he led the team responsible for developing a unique part-time B. A. Hons. Fine Art Degree Course specially designed to meet the needs of mature students. For the past four decades Graham Boyd has worked from his Chipperfield studio in Hertfordshire. Despite his status and global acclaim, Boyd constantly seeks to move on as an artist and attends artists' workshops and symposiums around the world, where he has worked with an international cross-section of painters, sculptors and other media artists, including the late Sir Anthony Caro and the American abstract painter Larry Poons.
