But some lucky kids actually got to work along side him at his Burbank studio and in "Working With Walt Disney" they share special memories of a man most of us only knew from afar.
Featured on the Walt Disney Treasures DVD "Your Host Walt Disney," this featurette sits down some of the stars of past Disney productions to talk about how wonderful it was to work for Walt. Former Mouseketeers, Tommy Kirk, and "Babes in Toyland" star Tommy Sands take the time to share some anecdotes on Walt the myth vs. Walt the man. We learn he was a friendly fellow, but distant at times, and wielded his celebrity like a fine-tuned instrument. Enjoy!
For more Disney history, be sure to visit www.disneyavenue.comKodak Presents Disneyland 59 - DisneyAvenue.comDiz Avenue2018-09-26 | Here's a show that was originally lost for many years. It's a kinescope recording (a low-quality image made from a camera mounted in front of a TV monitor) of a live, 90 minute television special that served to introduce the world to three new Disneyland attractions that opened at the Anaheim park—the Matterhorn, Monorail and Submarine Voyage. Walt Disney once again trusted his friend Art Linkletter to be the official master of ceremonies as he had been on the park's opening day in 1955. But the boss is never far away and everything you see is part of his dream come true.
There are dignitaries including the then-vice president of the United States, Richard Nixon, with his two daughters, and a galaxy of stars, including some names that will ring a nostalgic bell for anyone who was watching TV in those days.
Incidentally, a Walt Disney Studio film archivist located the film's original footage for the pre-produced film segments in this live show and spliced them into the kinescope recording for the Walt Disney Treasures DVD "Your Host Walt Disney" so those segments will look much better than the rest of the program which was photographed off of a television screen in 1959. Enjoy!
For more Disney history, be sure to visit www.DisneyAvenue.comMy Dad Walt Disney - Diane Disney Interview - DisneyAvenue.comDiz Avenue2018-09-21 | Diane Disney was the ultimate torchbearer of her father Walt's legacy. Walt Disney was a very public figure, but Diane did her best to avoid the spotlight until she realized that her father’s centennial year was approaching in 2001. She worried that people didn’t know who he was any more. The once-familiar face and voice from years of television exposure was fading into the shadows. If people recognized the name it was as a corporate entity and no longer associated with a real, live person. She made up her mind to reverse that process, even if it meant having to sacrifice some of her own privacy, and the Walt Disney Museum was born.
Back in 2006, before the Walt Disney Museum opened, Diane sat down with American film critic and historian Leonard Maltin for an interview that appeared in the bonus features of the Walt Disney Treasures DVD "Your Host Walt Disney" for a warm and intimate look back at her heartfelt memories of her dad, Walt Disney.

In this short, Walt Disney on film interacted with Mickey Mouse, a costumed performer on the stage of the nation's largest indoor theatre. Does Mickey's voice sound familiar? That is Walt doing the voice of Mickey. The gist of the movie is that a New York telephone operator is looking to talk to Hollywood, but gets connected to everywhere else. She finally gets through to Walt, who is not expecting guests. Ever the showman, he puts on his coat and talks about taking Disneyland from a dream to a reality, occasionally addressing his star rodent from afar.

Whether you’re staying in the iconic A-frame Contemporary tower or the nearby Garden Wing, you can walk to Magic Kingdom main gate or catch the Resort Monorail as it breezes through the tower. Another thing that you might have noticed during a visit to the Contemporary Resort is the area music heard in the Lobby. The Contemporary Resort actually has five different music loops playing throughout the property — an interior/exterior loop (heard here), pool area loop, The Wave, Chef Mickey's, and California Grill. The one you are about to hear is the one that plays in the Lobby, Convention areas, and outside on the porte-cochère.
The playlist is basically a four hour "Best of" 1990s smooth jazz album. One might even call it the best elevator music around. Either way, it sure is a great way to relax and capture the musical sounds of this classic Walt Disney World resort.

After 2 years of collecting each piece, one by one, we have finally finished it and placed them together. There are still a couple of pieces that have yet to be released for the Fantasyland platform which is why we added a pond where the Carousel would go and a orange grove (which you can't see in the video) where the Casey Jr piece would go. Hopefully Bob Olszweski and Disney will release those two pieces one day. Speaking of Bob Olszewski, his work is absolutely breathtaking and his miniature work is second to none. We have this collection on a timer so that it lights up nightly. Seeing it all lit up, you just can't help but to stop and admire its beauty. We collected all of the Walt Disney World pieces as well and purchased a second Disneyland Platform to use to display those pieces. Retrofitting the Disneyland Platform so that it works for the WDW collection is in the works now and we will share more when that is complete. We hope you enjoy and sorry for the shaky camera work...The Creation of EPCOT Centers World of Motion - DisneyAvenue.comDiz Avenue2018-06-08 | Before there was Test Track, there use to be a wonderful attraction presented by General Motors that invited you to travel the open road - to discover that when it comes to transportation, it's always fun to be free! The attraction opened in October 1982 with the rest of EPCOT Center and closed in January 1996 to make way for Test Track. In this promotional video from General Motors from the early 1980s titled "General Motors Presents: The Reality of Dreams" we'll take a firsthand look at the creation of one of EPCOT Center's original attractions, World of Motion.

In conjunction with the Bell System (later renamed AT&T), guests could walk into a large but friendly space and find several kiosks enabling them to make reservations for restaurants at the Walt Disney World property. Under the shadows of Spaceship Earth, this could be done by touching the screen and following the prompts. Should that fail or should a guest need specialized assistance, a Guest Services host would appear and provide further help.
In 1982, these types of technologies were presented in a warm and engaging, yet very future focused, environment. The goal of the Imagineers was to present this Future World portion of the park in a way that was inviting, celebrating the human element of the future and how we would all connect with each other more easily- and for a better life than in the past. All with one little spark and more of creativity and imagination.

Years later, when The Walt Disney Company pulled together plans to build Epcot, Bradbury was hired to help develop the storyline and script for an attraction that focused on the history of communication. In this episode, we'll see numerous Disneyland attractions that were opened on or around official holidays. Although Christmas is the official theme of the episode, complete with a Christmas parade and songs, it's hardly the only holiday featured in the program. Of course, when new attractions were opened, Disneyland frequently created their own unofficial holiday, such as "Gala Day", when three new attractions, the Matterhorn, the Monorail, and the original submarine voyage, opened in Tomorrowland back in 1959.
The place at Disneyland most prominently featured in this show is Main Street, U.S.A., where all Disneyland parades begin.
Lastly, on two occasions, you'll notice a thin man with glasses with kids (probably his real family) enter Walt Disney's segments. That's none other than Olan Soule, who's probably best remembered for voicing Batman in various cartoon shows from 1968-83.

Even so, he knew there had to be something special to warrant an entire hour in the Park. Walt and his television team came up with a double barreled idea - show off the Park at night and invite celebrity guest stars to entertain. Thus, "Disneyland After Dark" is not only an enjoyable look at the Park as it's lit by night, but a wonderful collection of performances.
"Disneyland After Dark" features celebrities such as Louis Armstrong, who was already a national treasure and is joined here by two other Jazz pioneers, Kid Ory and Johnny St. Cyr. The Osmond Brothers were new on the scene and this marked their television debut. Bobby Rydell was a popular teen idol back then. And Walt never missed an opportunity to spotlight his talented Mouseketeers, in this case Bobby Burgess and, of course, Annette Funicello.
In fact, "Disneyland After Dark" had enough marquee value to be released in theaters overseas.
And now friends, please enjoy this episode of Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color from 1962 titled "Disneyland After Dark" in spectacular HD compliments of DisneyAvenue.com.

For the tour, he brought along the very first Disneyland Ambassador, Julie Reihm, introducing her to his now familiar team of creators.
The show also brought viewers to Disneyland to see the newest attractions along with some special performances. Tom Mahoney, who started with Disney on the Mickey Mouse Club, choreographed the dance numbers featuring Disney’s newest star, Mary Poppins, as well as a dancing cake and candles. Rikki Lugo, who began her Disney career doing the can can in Disneyland’s Golden Horseshoe Revue, assisted Tom with the choreography, and ended up becoming part of the show when one candle went out. “They were wearing character heels in those ‘candles’ and doing turns without being able to use their arms. In the very first shot, one dancer, Emmy Lou, got her heel caught in the cobblestone and broke her ankle, and Tom said, ‘Okay, Rikki, there you go!'” and thus, Rikki lit up the screen as one of the dancing candles, dancing to a new Sherman brothers tune with lyrics proclaiming, “Ten years of fantasy, ten years of fun, ten years of growing and you’ve only just begun…”

The Great Movie Ride, one of the most beloved Walt Disney World attractions that opened back when Hollywood Studios was called Disney-MGM Studios in 1989, closed its doors forever on August 13th, 2017. It's a bit somber to think that the closing of this iconic attraction is the perfect metaphor for the end of a bygone era in Hollywood. Just like the classic movies it showcased, The Great Movie Ride will continue to live on in our hearts and minds, similar to Horizons, the Skyway buckets, or the original Journey Into Imagination, as a cherished and sorely missed piece of Disney Park history gone forever.

This traveling show, which ran from 1969 to the mid-1970s, took scores of the characters Walt Disney created and literally made them "come to life" right in your home town. As Walt Disney once said, "We're interested in doing things that are fun...in bringing pleasure and especially laughter to people." It was in this spirit – in this great tradition – that Disney On Parade was created. In this rarely seen video brought to you by DisneyAvenue.com, you will travel back to New York's Madison Square Garden circa 1970s and learn what it was like to be the cast of Disney On Parade.
The video begins at a press event with Disney On Parade characters Snow White, Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Pluto who are joined by sculptor Machu Picchu. The sculptor Picchu has sculpted a large Mickey Mouse head out of cheese and the Disney On Parade cast use the occasion to publicize their upcoming show in New York. We then see an exterior shot of Madison Square Garden and see a special pre-show appearance as children get to meet with some of the characters. We then see some clips of the actual Disney On Parade performance. This is a wonderful look at what Disney on Parade was and how it brought the magic of Disney straight to your front door. Enjoy!

This footage offers you an incredible time capsule back to the infancy of the Walt Disney World Resort. The video begins with the original Walt Disney World Preview Center sign that you'll love. It then cuts to a young boy wearing an original WDW Mickey Mouse ear hat (that I hope he kept all these years later) with his mother as they look at those old beloved Disney topiaries (listen carefully at the mother's voice...I love her southern belle accent). We are then taken inside the preview center and into the theater. The show begins and we see the large WDW Property Model that is illuminated based on the narration of what's to come. Be on the lookout for the original Polynesian Resort concept model as well as the never-built Asian, Venetian and Persian Resort models. This is then followed by a clip of a Walt Disney World Preview Center hostess explaining the Contemporary Resort concept art and the monorail. The video then ends with a wonderful shot of the Walt Disney World construction site which appears to have been cleared of trees but has yet to be built upon. This truly is a rarely seen and remarkable look back at the beginning of the Vacation Kingdom of the World. Enjoy friends...

Somehow it worked and Walt loved it. Here is his memory of that time in Disney history.

A section of the Western River Expedition model depicting the scene with the dance hall girls and the cowboy whose horse jumped atop the saloon's porch was displayed in its own private hallway. Near this area, an audio-animatronic owl named Hoot Gibson could be found snoring away on a tree branch. When guests pushed a button the owl would come to life and introduced himself as "the star of a brand new Western show being made for Walt Disney World." He then gave a brief run-down on the process behind audio-animatronic technology. At the conclusion of this, he then would urge guests to come back and visit him "at the Western River Expedition." This was extensive publicity for a attraction still being developed. This is a rare recording of the audio-animatronic owl from the old Walt Disney Story's post-show on Main Street.
