Quiapo, Santa Cruz, San Nicolas, and Tondo have all felt its effect. It is the oldest Chinatown in the world, founded in 1594 by the Spaniards as a Catholic Chinese settlement near Intramuros but across the Pasig River, positioned so that colonial rulers could keep a close eye on their migrant subjects.[7] It was already a center of Chinese commerce before the Spanish colonial period. Manila's commercial and trade hub is Binondo, where Filipino-Chinese-run businesses of all stripes prosper.Both Blessed Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo, the founder of the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary, and Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, a protomartyr from the Philippines, called this city home.There are a lot of hypotheses out there about where the names "Binondo" and "Tondo," the area next door, came from.
