Applied to music, this means microtonal tunings, microsteps, subtle changes in timing and so on... So that's what we set out to do. We used microsteps on the Analog Rytm II, ratchets from the GP82 for more microsteps, and matrix mixing of voltages to introduce microtonal changes to pitches...we started subtle and then just pushed it to 11! It was the hottest day of the year in our country and the temperature was actually very close to 90.9F!There are lots of 909 samples being played by Andy's Bitbox Micro and triggered by the 182 sequencer under the expanded control of the GP82 processor (thanks Chris!), Euclidian Circles and Drum Girl. Our bud Chris / @maikshifter has made a module to expand the 182's capabilities and we gave it a very good run for its money in this jam. Grace also used the granular sample playback of the Microfreak to play some dirty 909 hihats. Andy played his Plaits module and Grace had her TD3 feeding into the Spectraphon and then Beads for some nice metallic sound effects.We hope you enjoy this jam, as always it was recorded straight-to-stereo and is all hardware. It was an honour to be asked to take part in this and I was delighted to drawn out with Robin, whose YouTube channel I have loved and supported for a long time. In fact, it's fair to say, that Robin's down-to-earth approach to modular synthesis made my own journey into the "rabbit hole" possible.So how did the "patch-off" thing work? Well, there were six performers (Steve Davis, Gaz Williams, Sam Battle, Loula Yorke, Robin Vincent and me - I mean, yikes! There are some serious names in that list...and me...!!!). Names were literally drawn out of Robin's hat to create the pairings and we simply had to set up and play together, no rehearsal, minimal conversation (Robin was rather busy organising the whole event!), no sound check, just "Go!". In the end it all went rather well!This performance has already been posted on Molten Music Technology (linked below) but the video here has been tweaked by the wonderful Grace Griffin (also linked below) and she also sprinkled a bit of her fairy dust on the audio just to sweeten it up a bit. For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to try to replicate some of the sounds from the jam Grace and I did called "Cosy Constellation" (see my other videos for that...). As usual there was no time to sound check or get the the oscillators (etc) in tune so I just had to go with it as it was... The challenge's theme was rather zen: make your own challenge up! True story: when I arrived at Grace's this afternoon, it turns out we had independently had the same idea, to take a trip back into our shared distant musical past and revisit one of our favourite tracks from a band we used to be in together. We’ve missed a few challenges so thought we would be fashionably late with our spooky contribution this week. Andy used his modular featuring Doepfer A-111-6 and Wasp Filter, BIA, and played the 1010 Bitbox Micro loaded with some of Gioele’s samples after treatments in Audacity. He controlled the modular with his BSP and KS37. Grace sampled some other Gioele fragments into her Kaoss Pad 2 and fed them through the Lyra-8’s delay and distortion and ran a slow evolving arpeggio on the MicrofreakWe hope you enjoy watchijng the results of our jam.
