DaenafaeGreetings! Today I'll be exploring a new six colour limited palette of watercolours, with a slightly unconventional set of colours 🫣
I put this selection of paints together in order to have fun with pigments I am loving at the moment, and to challenge myself by using a very extremely split primary yellow.
Split primary palettes are often recommended to beginner artists to learn colour mixing. When I first started using professional watercolours, I began with a split primary set. The idea is to have a warm and cool of each primary colour: yellow, red, and blue. Due to this system setting up the foundation of my colour mixing studies, I still view primary colours in warms and cools when it comes to mixing and often reach for various combinations of split primaries to set up limited palettes. This "split yellow" though is the furthest I have ever pushed the idea lol.

#artsupplies #pencilsketching #drawingHow I mix earth tones from orange in watercolourDaenafae2025-08-24 | I love a good earth tone pigment, but how do you mix earth tones without them? Today I'll be sharing how I like to mix a variety of yellow and brown hues by mixing orange with primaries and secondaries. All while showing you the painting process of a mountain lion portrait using those mixes!
Colour theory is one of the earliest things beginner painters will start learning, and there are a plethora of resources out there covering the basics. This builds upon the basics, and assumes you are already somewhat familiar with the most basic concepts. I will mention some foundational concepts such as complementary colours, as well as near-complements. Some of the colour theory covered may offer you a surprising new range of mixing options. Such as using yellow-greens and orange to mix muted yellows, and how to mix muted blues from purple and green.

#howto #watercolor #colortheoryCan I fall in love with Pyrrole Orange? PO71 Watercolour Pigment ExplorationDaenafae2025-08-09 | Pyrrole Orange by Maimeri Blu is two first-time experiences in one for me. I haven't tried Maimeri Blu watercolour paints before, and this will also be my first time trying the orange version of the pigment PO71. Its redder variant, the now discontinued Transparent Pyrrol Orange by Daniel Smith, is my favourite "warm red" on my main palette that I am currently trying to find a replacement for. I know I can't find an exact replacement, but it's fun to explore and experiment with pigments to see what fits my preferences.
In this video we'll have a look at Pyrrole Orange's pigment properties, and colour mixing with some of my favourite pigments. Towards the end I'll share the scan of the mixing chart with you, and compare it to the mixing chart for Transparent Orange PO107/DPP by Winsor and Newton. For the colour mixes I used the same pigments for both charts, so we can get a proper look at how the two paints compare.
Choosing watercolour pigments can be a very personal choice, and comes down in part to subjective opinions based on your individual needs and preferences. My hope is that by sharing my own journey finding a new orange/red it may help beginner artists see how you can discover more about your individuality and voice as an artist through forming your own thoughts on art supplies.

Transparent Orange PO107 Pigment ExplorationDaenafae2025-07-26 | In my ongoing quest to find a replacement for my favourite red-orange watercolour pigment I have been exploring alternatives. Today we'll be taking a look at Transparent Orange by Winsor and Newton, the pigment PO107/DPP.
First we'll dive into its pigment properties, then some colour mixing using my favourite gradual mixing method, and then finally we will look at an illustration using PO107 as part of a limited palette.

#watercolor #painting #holbeinCelebrating my favourite (discontinued) warm red!Daenafae2025-06-20 | Art supplies change or get discontinued entirely more frequently than people may realise. Rather than letting discontinuations be all doom and gloom, I want to share with you all the joy and help that an old pigment has given me in my painting practice over the years. Today we’ll be looking at Transparent Pyrrol Orange by Daniel Smith - but the much redder version that was discontinued before 2019 - and the process of a tiger painting.
Despite its name being "orange", the hue fits my needs and preferences as a warm red in a split primary palette. It was one of the first pigments I picked up when I started using professional paints, and it helped me build the foundations of my colour mixing knowledge. Comparing it with other reds and oranges didn't just help me with colour theory though, it helped me learn about my own preferences for when to use certain pigment characteristics over others. There's a lot of joy and value that this paint has given me over the years, and I want to share and celebrate that with you all.
Go out there and enjoy every second with your favourite supplies. Through all the highs and lows of creativity, they are right there along with you.

Every May the art community gets together for Mermay, an art challenge focused around mermaids, mermen, merfolk, mercreatures, meranimals, meranything pretty much! I don't join in for the daily version, but I do take the energy of the season to inspire me in my sketchbook. A couple of those sketches I ended up turning into illustrations this year, and today I'll be taking you along for the process of a nudibranch inspired mermaid. If you aren't familiar with nudibranchs, have a dive (hehe) into them at some point. They're a great treasure trove of inspiration, and just fun to draw to me.
Join me as I take you through the sketch transfer, inking, and painting of this line and wash style illustration. During the process I'll talk about my materials and thought process, as well as chat about what I'm up to creatively.
A common question I see come up in the art community is how music plays a role in an artist's creative process. I've talked a little about how it plays a part in my practice in the past, but answered mainly in an abstract way. Since the process of this illustration and some upcoming illustrations were fresh in my memory, I decided to revisit my answer with how current examples.

#illustration #inkandwatercolor #drawingprocess #drawwithmeA moody muted watercolour triad 🍂 Trying out Jackmans Art MaterialsDaenafae2025-05-15 | A lot of things aligned to bring this moody muted triad together. My current art studying goals for the year, Lana's Pigment Exploration Club, and curiosity over Jackman's Art Materials to name just a few!
Triads are a great way to explore new things without burdening my wallet too much, and help push me to expand my painting knowledge at the same time. Combining that with all three pigments being new to me too, and I've opened a world of learning to explore!
Join me as I take you along for my first explorations of these paints and what I can paint with such a limited palette. We'll be looking at the colour mixes using my favourite mixing chart method, and I'll share some of my initial first impressions. The earth tones in particular were a pleasant surprise! Towards the end of the video I'll also share a quick and loose plein air study I did with just this watercolour triad to you can see the results of the pigments in action.

#sketchbook #drawwithme #sketchbookchronicles #newsketchbook #firstpage #illustrationPigment Exploration: Quinacridone Violet PV19Daenafae2025-05-01 | Do the pigments you start learning with influence your painting habits? This has been on my mind recently upon noticing my everyday cool red Quinacridone Rose (PV19) has been nearly used up again.
The pigment PV19 comes in a variety of shades, typically covering the cool red to pink to warm violet range. Quinacridone Rose is a common hue found across the majority of watercolour ranges, alongside it's sister Quinacridone Violet sharing the same pigment number.
With a restock now in the not-too-distant horizon, I felt this was a good opportunity to explore the cool red to warm violet range by playing with Quinacridone Violet. This will help broaden my colour mixing and pigment knowledge, but also help me figure out the answer to that initial question. Do I use Quin Rose because it's what I started with, or do I actually prefer it?
For the first test of this paint, I'll be sharing my favourite method of learning about paints and palettes. This method focuses more on the range of mixes available between pigments. Instead of the typical grid method you will see in a lot of videos (which is great in its own way!), I have set up a sheet of swatches gradually adding more of the PV19 Violet to different pigments. This helps me develop a wider understanding of the colour mixing potential of a pigment. I'm not sure where I first saw this method, but other artists such as Victoria Gedvillas and Denise Soden both use it to explore gradual shifts in mixes.

I'm working on Saunders Waterford hot pressed natural white watercolour paper in the size 7 by 10 inches. The ink line art was drawn with a 0.25 micron fineliner pen. For the watercolours I am using my "main palette", details of which can be found in a video earlier in the year or in the FAQ section of my website. I am also using a new paint off my "expansion palette" for painting the background of this piece, which is Twilight Purple by Holbein. A heavily granulating mix of three pigments that splits into pink, purple, and a peachy-orange.
#illustration #watercolorart #characterartAdding two new watercolour paints to my expansion palette #watercolor #artsuppliesDaenafae2025-03-08 | Fresh pours of two new paints I'm exploring. Both of them heavily granulate, which is when pigments settle into uneven textures. The pinkish paint is Twilight Purple, which separates into orange, pink, and purple. The blue paint is Ocean Blue, which separates into a cool blue and granulating yellow.
I have already used the Twilight Purple for the background of a recent illustration. Sometimes I can only really see how a paint behaves through actual practice on a painting or illustration, versus doing swatching.
#watercolorpainting #watercolors #painting #paintpaletteLooking at my old beginner art! 😱 Starting watercolour, learning head drawing and fundamentalsDaenafae2025-03-06 | As requested, here's a tour of one of my old art archive folders! This covers mostly 2017 to 2018, when I was beginning watercolour and starting to study anatomy. In this art tour you'll see sketches, colour mixing, experimenting with mediums and techniques, attempting illustrations, and various exercises I did as part of my self studying. At the time I didn't really use sketchbooks and instead stuck to loose sheets of paper. So in a way this archive folder is my sketchbook for that time period.
Looking back through my art has been a wonderful source of inspiration and an educational exercise in self-evaluation. Rather than becoming caught up in comparison with others, self-comparison can be a helpful tool. Especially for self studying whether as a beginner artist, or once reaching intermediate and advanced stages.

#arttour #beginnerartists #artprogress #selfstudy #artinspiration7 Things to Consider BEFORE Buying Art Supplies - Beginner Artist TipsDaenafae2025-02-27 | Beginning art or a new medium and don't know where to start with art supplies? Do all the different and conflicting recommendations leave you confused? You are not alone! I remember how overwhelming and confusing it was to navigate all the information out there as a beginner. In this video I have compiled a list of seven things to consider before buying art supplies, based on things I had to learn the hard way in my own art journey. These are particularly helpful for beginner artists to keep in mind, but are also beneficial for artists at any level to be reminded of. Before you are tempted into buying the latest shiny art supply everyone raves about, I encourage you to keep these things in mind. My hope is that sharing these will help give you the tools to recognise why so many different recommendations occur, why they do not fit every artist, and how you can learn about what you need as an individual.
As always, take what resonates and leave what doesn't. I share these points about why artists have different opinions while recognising I too am in turn giving my own opinion by making this video lol.

#watercolor #asmr #tapepeel #animalpaintingHow understanding watercolour granulation helps plan paintings - Expansion Palette in actionDaenafae2025-02-20 | Curious about granulation in watercolour paints and how to plan paintings around it? I recently set up a palette with all my favourite "special effects" paints. Rather than just swatching out the colours, let's take a look at my expansion palette in action! I'll take you along with me to show you how I use my own knowledge of pigment properties to plan a painting of a lion portrait. By understanding how the paints on my palettes act, I can start to plan on advance how to approach the lighting, colour mixes, and more. In the video I will focus on how even just one heavily granulating paint can affect a whole painting.
With deadlines over, it's finally time for some creating and I have been itching to wind down with a comfort-zone painting. Not too much comfort though, because there's a twist. I picked a comforting subject for me (big cats, surprise anyone? haha), and then combined it with two "challenges". One is to only use watercolours from my expansion palette, which houses all the pigments I use less often or for special effects. There are a lot of heavily granulating and opaque colours in there! The second mini challenge is to tackle a new lighting situation. Lighting is something I want to improve at currently in my self-studying, which is why I picked it for this. I chose a subject that is mostly in shadow, with very distinct dark shadows and light lights. The reference is from the Big Cats of Africa No.2 reference pack by Dustin Blaise.
This video is split into the tight-sketching process, colour mixing to determine which pigments to use and decide on a colour palette, and the painting process.

This was the first step in setting up my new expansion palette, where I now keep all the watercolour paints I use for particular properties or effects. Think lots of granulation or pretty hues. 🦋🦋🦋 #watercolor #watercolourpaint #paintpalette #artsupplies #traditionalpainting #asmrExpansion palette set up! Reusing old watercolours and pouring fresh paintsDaenafae2025-02-13 | Today I'm setting up my expansion palette, which will be the new permanent home to a bunch of my favourite professional watercolours I like to use on occasion for particular hues or effects. This palette is designed to compliment my main palette and the everyday colours I use frequently. I'll take you through the pigments I'm adding to this palette, and why I am adding them. Some have qualities that are ideal for my line and colour illustrations, while others have qualities that I use for "special effects" such as the incredibly granulating French Ultramarine. Quite a lot of these are from the first professional watercolours I picked up when I was a beginner artist and moving on from using student watercolours. Still firm favourites, but no longer in daily use.
I answer a few questions I received about why I am making the palette, and why I am not using this as my main palette. If you have any further questions please leave them in the comments, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can!
The palette I'm using is a Holbein RP-24 palette, which has removable slanted wells around the size of a full pan. For more information about the palette itself, check out the first impressions video from a couple weeks ago.
The concept of an additional palette to compliment the main colours you use is not something new. Plenty of artists have a similar concept in their practice, and I feel like it will work well in mine. The first time I heard the term "expansion palette" in particular though was by the artist Victoria Gedvillas. I love the term, as it makes me think of video game expansions. Which is why I sometimes think of this as a non-DLC palette. Non-downloaded expansion pack haha.
There will be no swatching in this video, but do not worry! I will be challenging myself to paint with only this palette in next week's video so you can see the paints in action.

#watercolor #paintpalette #palette #watercolorpainting #art #artsupplies #illustrationHow I test illustration ideas - Sketchbook Chronicles 001Daenafae2025-02-06 | Curious about the process of coming up with and testing art ideas? Join me as I'm back in my sketchbook to plan for an illustration I keep thinking about. To iron out the idea and identify any roadblocks I'm testing the idea in my sketchbook first. That way I can figure out what I need to adjust or keep the same, and what subjects I may want to study further before attempting the actual illustration! This sketchbook process helps inform my self study curriculum.
Of course, I was able to identify a couple things through this practice which I will talk through in the video. Once I work on those, I'm most likely going to pursue this as a watercolour painting 🙂 The main thing I want to explore in this illustration is the composition and how the arm of the character features in it.
In this sketching session I'm using a Royal Talens Art Creation sketchbook, a 0.9 mm HB mechanical pencil, pigma FB brush pen, and blue posca marker.
This video also marks the beginning of a video series I have wanted to do where I take you along with me in my sketchbook practice. I want to dive a little more into how I use my sketchbook in my art practice and self studying, and this will be the place where I do so. It combines things I have done in the past such as sketch with me/draw with me videos (and I encourage you to create along with me if you'd like!), and videos where I discuss things like my art journey, my creative process, my self studying process, and my favourite art supplies.

#art #sketchwithme #drawwithme #sketchbooksession #characterdesign #illustrationPainting tape peeling #watercolorpainting #asmr #traditionalart #animalartDaenafae2025-02-01 | There's nothing that makes the feeling of finishing a painting complete quite like peeling away the tape to reveal the border 😌
In January I took part in an art community collab where we all had the same theme and same limited colour palette to use. The theme was deer, and for the watercolours I used Prussian Blue, Azo Orange, and Quinacridone Rose. Alongside the triad, we were allowed to use white and black paint. I chose to only use white, in the form of Titanium White gouache, to add details towards the end.
#watercolorpainting #animalpainting #artist #illustrator #tapepeelTaking a look at the new Holbein RP-24 palette for making an Expansion palette!Daenafae2025-01-30 | Let's take a first-impressions look together at the Holbein RP-24 watercolour palette, which I plan to make into an "expansion palette". More about that in a future video! For now I'll take you through the features of this palette, why they are useful to me in my art practice, and some of the technical info like palette dimensions! This isn't a review so much as a first-look, as I like to really know a thing inside out through continuous use before forming a full opinion on it.
Over time I have noticed things that make me happier when painting, and one of those things is using slanted (or sloping) wells. For some reason using them makes the process of painting much more enjoyable to me. However, when it comes to storing paint I like the flexibility of using pans. With half pans and full pans you can take them out of a palette and move them around easily. When I was first coming up with the ideas for what I want in an expansion palette (the term being inspired by the artist Victoria Gedvillas), I realised I would need to make a compromise between the two. Or do I? Enter this palette 😎
Something that is important to me in my practice as well is being mindful about using, reusing, and rehoming art supplies. I go over that a little bit in regards to palettes and reusing old paint towards the end of the video.
What do you enjoy in a palette? Are you a sloping well enjoyer or an avid full pan fan? Let me know! I love chatting about art supplies

Watch as I think through how I plan to deal with this unforseen art challenge hosted by nature and my lack of balance. You get to enjoy a little spontaneous new sketchbook tour out of it too, I suppose? Haha
Most of the dried on dirt can be removed with an eraser, which I have started doing. However the splashes of muddy water and grass stains won't budge. I take this as a moment to pivot and readjust my intentions for using this sketchbook, rather than viewing it as something that has ruined my sketchbook. I used only 2B pencil for the linework, which I'm enjoying lately for the softer look it lends to watercolour illustrations. You do sometimes have to be careful applying watercolour over graphite though, as some can be picked up and carried in the water which can cloudy up light washes. That seems to happen more or less in different pencils I've used and the 2B pencil held up well here.
This was inspired by a trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park in 2024, where I saw tigers climbing huge logs lodged into the ground. I'm hoping to paint them from life next time if it doesn't rain the whole time 🫠6 ART BOOKS I use for self studying and inspiration! Animals and Creature Design EditionDaenafae2025-01-16 | Let's dive into three educational art books I use to study and three inspirational art books I use to inspire me for animals and creatures!
I was about to film some of the painting process of a tiger illustration when I got distracted by an idea for a video, and since I already had the filming set up going I decided to roll with it haha. I have shared some of these in the past, but since this is focused on animal drawing and creature design there should be an interesting combination for you here. I use these books in my art practice to self study and keep me inspired (say no to art block 🙂↔️). If you're a beginner artist I hope this can help inspire you too! We all need different things to learn and grow, so find what works for you :)

Yes I finally decided on the last colour for this palette, yay! It fits my current painting needs so well, I'm surprised I didn't go with it from the start haha. Watercolour palette 2024/25Daenafae2024-10-31 | Let's take a look at one of my oldest watercolour palettes, and see how I can change it to fit my current painting needs. I'll be using paint swatches and a test painting sketch to choose which pigments to switch out, and if I need to make any changes after that (spoilers, I do!) This palette needs to be able to handle the subjects I love to paint, such as animals, characters, and fantastical creatures. This first test painting of a bison calf tackles the first, and helps me figure out strengths and weaknesses of the pigments I've chosen. I say buffalo instead of bison a few times in the video due to a fluffy brain!
Watercolour palettes can be an ever evolving thing in an art practice. As your tastes and experience changes, so too will your needs when it comes to pigments. Pigments can also change and go out of production as well. I've noticed that there is a level of need to balance consistency yet also adaptability when it comes to the materials I use for that reason.
Grab your favourite art supplies and let's hang out for a bit while I play with pigments and paint a buffalo calf ☕
