Harvesting and splitting the logs keeps me fit and saves me money, but that's not enough to explain the 'affection' I feel. Writing the famous line in his book, 'Walden' over 170 years ago, Thoreau captures everything else that makes a wood-pile feel good: - friendship, evening firelight, in touch with nature and a rare shared experience with our ancestors, and all the other 'mindfulness' elements that are so important in the frantic 21st century. A visual testament to hard work done and an insurance against power outages and all that a cold winter can throw at us.

By far the fastest stick fire to boil water. I normally build the fire inside the kettle before lighting it, as that works best in bad weather. I find the dry straight stems of plants like: cow parsley, hogweed, sweet cicely, nettle, willowherb, mugwort, dames violet, teasel and thistle, work as well as sticks. The basic design is manufactured as a: Kelly Kettle, Storm Kettle, Ghillie Kettle, Volcano Kettle, Petromax Kettle and Thermette. In countries with cold winters, and a long and unbroken tradition of stoves and firewood, good technique is widely understood. But here in the UK at the start of the 20th century, we had only about 4 % woodland and abundant coal. I recall from my childhood, most homes I knew burnt coal. In many places our wood-burning traditions were lost. Plus the chimneys in older homes were not designed for wood burning stoves. I offer some thoughts on how I approach this, and give the opinion of chimney sweeps that I have discussed the issue with. On the one hand, there is heating throughout the night, and hot embers for easy lighting the next morning. But on the other hand, bad technique can cause soot, creosote and tar to build up within the chimney. For me, before looking at how I might overnight burn, I would first consider why I need to?

FINDING GOLD - My book about leaving work to go gold prospecting is available here: https://amzn.eu/d/0h0SIFrqHow to Check Firewood - Moisture MetersLiving with Woodfires2023-02-06 | Dry logs make good fires. Never assume your logs are ready to burn - know they are! On the open hearth or in a wood burning stove, it has never been more important to use properly dried firewood. Bought-in delivered logs, bagged firewood and those you've harvested and stored yourself should be checked. For me, wood is the most beautiful renewable heating fuel and my responsibility is to make sure it is harvested sustainably and burnt efficiently. It is my tiny contribution to not burning a fossil fuel like heating oil or gas, nor increasing the demand for nuclear energy. And those of us living with wood fires must do all we can to burn cleanly. This is becoming increasingly important as attention focusses on smoke and PM2.5 fine particulate matter. I am proud to use this ancient and benign heating fuel, and, in doing so, not release fossilised carbon into the atmosphere nor create more radio-active waste!

Living With Woodfires on Facebook facebook.com/livingwithwoodfiresWhy we must Dry our Firewood?Living with Woodfires2022-11-18 | Most people who live with woodfires know that their firewood needs to be dry. But it is more than that - I was shocked when I calculated how much heat is lost boiling off the sap, even from a normal seasoned ready-to-burn log. The physics of latent heat is almost magical - and knowing this opens up a new world of understanding for those of us who live with wood heating. Dry logs burn hotter and cleaner, this is becoming more important as attention on emissions grows - especially of smoke and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from wood and coal, open fires and stoves. This is not just important in smoke controlled areas - it is for all of us. Wood is a true renewable, one we should be proud to use - as long as it is harvested sustainably and burned efficiently.
