The Real History of Communism | Part 1 | Narrated by Hugh Bonneville
updated
After Batman & Robin killed the franchise, Warner Bros. spent nearly a decade searching for a way back — and the director who finally cracked it was a guy best known for a $5 million indie film about a man who can't make new memories.
Christopher Nolan pitched his reboot to Warner Bros. executives in his own garage, drawing on Richard Donner's Superman and Frank Miller's Batman: Year One to build a grounded, real-world take on the character. After testing Cillian Murphy for the lead (and casting him as Scarecrow instead), Nolan chose Christian Bale as Batman and assembled a cast including Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman for Batman Begins — all under a level of secrecy so tight, scripts were printed on red paper to stop them being photocopied. The film became a $370 million hit and a critical triumph, and it wasn't long before Nolan returned with Jonathan Nolan and David Goyer to write The Dark Knight, drawing from The Killing Joke and The Long Halloween. But casting the Joker proved deeply controversial: when Warner Bros. passed over more established names for Heath Ledger, an actor mostly known at the time for romantic dramas, the reaction inside Hollywood was swift disbelief — nobody thought he could pull it off. Even Jack Nicholson, who'd made the role iconic nearly two decades earlier, reportedly called Ledger directly to warn him just how far the Joker could get inside his head.

After Batman Returns was branded too dark for kids (and too dark for Happy Meals), Warner Bros. brought in Joel Schumacher with one order: make it brighter, lighter, and a lot more toyetic. What followed was Batman Forever's Val Kilmer clashing with his director and melting down in a 110-degree rubber suit, then Batman & Robin adding a costume detail that would define the franchise's reputation for decades.
Val Kilmer stepped into the cowl opposite Jim Carrey's Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones's Two-Face, but on-set tension with Schumacher and a batsuit that trapped heat like an oven pushed Kilmer to the brink — and out of the franchise. His replacement, George Clooney, joined Arnold Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze and Uma Thurman's Poison Ivy for Batman & Robin, a film built almost entirely around merchandising and camp spectacle, right down to a costume redesign that added nipples to both the Batsuit and Batgirl's suit. Behind the scenes, Alicia Silverstone faced cruel and unauthorized comments about her appearance from a crew member, and costume designer Bob Ringwood reportedly walked off the production entirely. When Batman & Robin's opening-weekend numbers collapsed by over 60% in its second week, the studio didn't just cancel the planned sequel... they put the entire franchise on ice.

Given total creative freedom after the success of 1989's Batman, Tim Burton set out to make Batman Returns as dark and strange as he wanted — and one actress was so desperate to play Catwoman that she showed up at Warner Bros. in costume, uninvited, and talked her way into an executive's office.
With producer Denise Di Novi and screenwriter Daniel Waters reshaping the franchise around its villains, Batman Returns cast Christopher Walken and Danny DeVito as new nemeses and turned to Annette Bening for Catwoman — until a last-minute pregnancy forced Michelle Pfeiffer into the role just weeks before filming, wearing a latex costume literally built for someone else. What followed was one of the strangest, darkest studio blockbusters ever made: black bile, a baby thrown into a river, and an ending so bleak Warner Bros. had to reshoot and reprint film reels nationwide days before release. The backlash was swift — McDonald's balked at its own Happy Meal tie-in — and the studio walked away convinced its franchise needed a serious change in direction.

Michael Keaton's bat suit is so stiff he can't even turn his head. Jack Nicholson's Joker makeup has to be redesigned from scratch. And on day one of filming, a horseback riding accident throws the entire production of 1989's Batman into chaos.
With Tim Burton now filming in England on a ballooning budget, the crew and cast are pushed to their limits: Vicki Vale actress Sean Young is thrown from a horse and seriously injured during rehearsal, leading to her replacement by Kim Basinger after early frontrunner Michelle Pfeiffer is ruled out. Meanwhile, Michael Keaton can barely move in his own costume, Nick Dudman's team races to solve the Joker's smile without permanently disfiguring Jack Nicholson, an untested Batmobile crashes through a shop window, and the film's ending gets rewritten at the eleventh hour — reportedly inspired by a night at The Phantom of the Opera. Add in a battle over the soundtrack between composer Danny Elfman and Prince, and it's a miracle Batman ever made it to theaters at all — let alone became the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros. history at the time.

A comic book superfan makes an impossible vow to save Batman from campy TV history — and years later, actually pulls it off, teaming with two mismatched producers and a director nobody expected to helm a superhero movie.
After the 1966 Batman TV series turned the Dark Knight into a punchline, teenage superfan Michael Uslan swore he'd one day bring the "true" Batman — dark, driven, and dangerous — to the screen. Nearly every studio in Hollywood turned him down before producers Peter Guber and Jon Peters got the project moving, Tim Burton signed on off the strength of Beetlejuice and Pee-wee's Big Adventure, and the casting of Michael Keaton as Batman sparked a full-blown fan revolt before a single frame was shot. Then, weeks before the cameras rolled, disaster struck Vicki Vale actress Sean Young during a horseback rehearsal — throwing the entire production into chaos. Icons Unearthed: Batman kicks off with the decade-long journey from comic book geek's dream to the greenlit set of 1989's Batman.

Taking a cue from their comic book source material, these films tell different characters’ stories that all take place in one massive, interwoven universe.
