This cosmos old is wrought in such a cast
That tavern, saki and flask donʹt for eʹer last.

Qismat-e-Badah Magar Haq Hai Ussi Millat Ka
Angbeen Jis Ke Jawanon Ko Hai Talkhaab-e-Hayat!

That nation has the right to luck in life
Whose youth for honey take worldly blows and strife.

ہے مُریدوں کو تو حق بات گوارا لیکن
شیخ و مُلّا کو بُری لگتی ہے درویش کی بات
قوم کے ہاتھ سے جاتا ہے متاعِ کردار
بحث میں آتا ہے جب فلسفۂ ذات و صفات
گرچہ اس دَیرِ کُہن کا ہے یہ دستورِ قدیم
کہ نہیں مے کدہ و ساقی و مِینا کو ثبات
قسمتِ بادہ مگر حق ہے اُسی ملّت کا
انگبیں جس کے جوانوں کو ہے تلخابِ حیات!

اگر سیاہ دلم، داغِ لالہ زارِ تو ام
وگر کُشادہ جبینم، گُلِ بہارِ تو ام
چمن کو چھوڑ کے نِکلا ہوں مثلِ نگہتِ گُل
ہُوا ہے صبر کا منظور امتحاں مجھ کو
چلی ہے لے کے وطن کے نگار خانے سے
شرابِ علم کی لذّت کشاں کشاں مجھ کو
نظر ہے ابرِ کرم پر، درختِ صحرا ہُوں
کِیا خدا نے نہ محتاجِ باغباں مجھ کو
فلک نشیں صفَتِ مہر ہُوں زمانے میں
تری دعا سے عطا ہو وہ نردباں مجھ کو
مقام ہم سفروں سے ہو اس قدر آگے
کہ سمجھے منزلِ مقصود کارواں مجھ کو
مری زبانِ قلم سے کسی کا دل نہ دُکھے
کسی سے شکوہ نہ ہو زیرِ آسماں مجھ کو
دلوں کو چاک کرے مثلِ شانہ جس کا اثر
تری جناب سے ایسی مِلے فغاں مجھ کو
بنایا تھا جسے چُن چُن کے خار و خس میں نے
چمن میں پھر نظر آئے وہ آشیاں مجھ کو
پھر آ رکھوں قدمِ مادر و پدر پہ جبیں
کِیا جنھوں نے محبّت کا رازداں مجھ کو
وہ شمعِ بارگہِ خاندانِ مرتضوی
رہے گا مثلِ حرم جس کا آستاں مجھ کو
نفَس سے جس کے کھِلی میری آرزو کی کلی
بنایا جس کی مروّت نے نکتہ داں مجھ کو
دعا یہ کر کہ خداوندِ آسمان و زمیں
کرے پھر اس کی زیارت سے شادماں مجھ کو
وہ میرا یوسفِ ثانی، وہ شمعِ محفلِ عشق
ہُوئی ہے جس کی اخوّت قرارِ جاں مجھ کو
جَلا کے جس کی محبّت نے دفترِ من و تو
ہوائے عیش میں پالا، کِیا جواں مجھ کو
ریاضِ دہر میں مانندِ گُل رہے خنداں
کہ ہے عزیز تر از جاں وہ جانِ جاں مجھ کو
شگفتہ ہو کے کلی دل کی پھُول ہو جائے!
یہ التجائے مسافر قبول ہو جائے!

کسی کی یاد نے سِکھلا دیا ترانہ مجھے
یہ کیفیت ہے مری جانِ ناشکیبا کی
مری مثال ہے طفلِ صغیرِ تنہا کی
اندھیری رات میں کرتا ہے وہ سرود آغاز
صدا کو اپنی سمجھتا ہے غیر کی آواز
یونہی میں دل کو پیامِ شکیب دیتا ہوں
شبِ فراق کو گویا فریب دیتا ہوں

Even its setting flames like a rising sun;
Single its hue, yet manifold age by age;

Na Iss Mein Asr-e-Rawan Ki Haya Se Bezari

یہ ہے نہایتِ اندیشہ و کمالِ جُنوں
طلوع ہے صفَتِ آفتاب اس کا غروب
یگانہ اور مثالِ زمانہ گُونا گُوں!
نہ اس میں عصرِ رواں کی حیا سے بیزاری
نہ اس میں عہدِ کُہن کے فسانہ و افسوں
حقائقِ اَبدی پر اساس ہے اس کی

None other than the Sphinx, the Dread One, lord
Of the secrets of old times, taught me this:

Dafatan Jis Se Badal Jati Hai Taqdeer-e-Ummam
Hai Woh Quwwat Ke Hareef Iss Ki Nahin Aqal-e-Hakeem

Strength that in one hour can swerve the fates of nations
Admits no puzzling intellect for rival,

Har Zamane Mein Digargoon Hai Tabiat Iss Ki
Kabhi Shamsheer-e-Muhammad (S.A.W.) Hai, Kabhi Chob-e-Kaleem (A.S.)!

Though many in each age are its manifestations—
Now Moses’ rod, and now Muhammad (PBUH)’s sword.

خود ابوالہول نے یہ نکتہ سِکھایا مجھ کو
وہ ابوالہول کہ ہے صاحبِ اَسرارِ قدیم
دفعتہً جس سے بدل جاتی ہے تقدیرِ اُمم
ہے وہ قوّت کہ حریف اس کی نہیں عقلِ حکیم

That nation has the right to luck in life
Whose youth for honey take worldly blows and strife.

ہے مُریدوں کو تو حق بات گوارا لیکن
شیخ و مُلّا کو بُری لگتی ہے درویش کی بات
قوم کے ہاتھ سے جاتا ہے متاعِ کردار
بحث میں آتا ہے جب فلسفۂ ذات و صفات
گرچہ اس دَیرِ کُہن کا ہے یہ دستورِ قدیم
کہ نہیں مے کدہ و ساقی و مِینا کو ثبات
قسمتِ بادہ مگر حق ہے اُسی ملّت کا

He, who predicts the Fate of man, and keeps his gaze eʹer fixed on sky:
Such man is unaware of fact that rank of self is very high.

Khudi Ko Jis Ne Falak Se Buland Tar Dekha
Wohi Hai Mamlikat-e-Subah-o-Sham Se Aagah

Those who perceive this fact so clear that dome of sky that spins around,
Has not the height as self of man. ʹBout world have formed an opinion sound.

Wohi Nigah Ke Na-Khoob-o-Khoob Se Mehram
Wohi Hai Dil Ke Hilal-o-Haraam Se Aagah

They are aware of all those things that charm and repel the human sight:
To them alone this fact is known what blackens heart, what renders bright.

Since Muslim true of faqr has been bereft,
No Salmanʹs Faith or Solomonʹs awe are left.

سکُوں پرستیِ راہب سے فقر ہے بیزار
فقیر کا ہے سفینہ ہمیشہ طوفانی

کہ ہے نہایتِ مومن خودی کی عُریانی
وجود صیرفیِ کائنات ہے اُس کا
اُسے خبر ہے، یہ باقی ہے اور وہ فانی
اُسی سے پوچھ کہ پیشِ نگاہ ہے جو کچھ
جہاں ہے یا کہ فقط رنگ و بو کی طُغیانی
یہ فقر مردِ مسلماں نے کھو دیا جب سے
رہی نہ دولتِ سلمانی و سلیمانی

Alfaz Ke Pechon Mein Ulajhte Nahin Dana

Paida Hai Faqat Halq-e-Arbab-e-Junoon Mein

Grasp what morning songs denote, What aim or end I would promote.

Allah Rakhe Tere Jawanon Ko Salamat!
De In Ko Sabaq Khud Shikani, Khud Nigari Ka

May God preserve the youth you guide and may they all by Faith abide!
Restraint and order you must teach to shun conceit you ought to preach.

Tu In Ko Sikha Khara Shagafi Ke Tareeqe
Maghrib Ne Sikhaya Inhain Fann Shisha-Gari Ka

Those who blow on glass in West, Have taught the youth repose and rest:
Let them imbibe to bear the shocks, and cut the stones and hew the rocks.

Dil Torh Gyi In Ka Do Sadiyon Ki Ghulami
Daru Koi Soch In Ki Preshan Nazari Ka

The foreign Yoke that ran for periods long, has drained the blood of heart, so strong;
Think of some cure, panacea or aught to bring to end their sight distraught.

Keh Jata Hun Main Zor-e-Junoon Mein Tere Asrar
Mujh Ko Bhi Sila De Meri Aashufta Sari Ka!

In fits of frenzy strong and great of mysteries, God I start to prate:
Bestow on my distracted brain some recompense for this pain.

اے پِیرِ حرم! رسم و رہِ خانقہی چھوڑ
مقصود سمجھ میری نوائے سَحری کا
اللہ رکھے تیرے جوانوں کو سلامت!
دے ان کو سبق خود شکَنی، خود نگَری کا
تُو ان کو سِکھا خارا شگافی کے طریقے
مغرب نے سِکھایا انھیں فن شیشہ گری کا
دِل توڑ گئی ان کا دو صدیوں کی غلامی
دارُو کوئی سوچ ان کی پریشاں نظَری کا
کہہ جاتا ہوں مَیں زورِ جُنوں میں ترے اَسرار
مجھ کو بھی صِلہ دے مری آشُفتہ سری کا!

Ek Walwala Taza Diya Main Ne Dilon Ko
Lahore Se Ta-Bakhak-e-Bukhara-o-Samarqand

My songs fresh zeal to hearts of men impart,
Their charm extends to lands that lie apart.

Taseer Hai Ye Mere Nafas Ki Ke Khazan Mein
Murghan-e-Sehar Khawan Meri Sohbat Mein Hain Khoursand

In Autumn my breath makes birds that chirp in morn,
Imbibe much joy and feel no more forlorn.

Lekin Mujhe Paida Kiya Uss Dais Mein Tu Ne
Jis Dais Ke Bande Hain Ghulami Pe Razamand!

O God, to such a land I have been sent,
Where men in abject bondage feel content.

میں بندۂ ناداں ہوں، مگر شُکر ہے تیرا
رکھتا ہوں نہاں خانۂ لاہُوت سے پیوند
اک ولولۂ تازہ دیا مَیں نے دلوں کو
لاہور سے تا خاکِ بخارا و سمرقند
تاثیر ہے یہ میرے نفَس کی کہ خزاں میں
مُرغانِ سحَر خواں مری صحبت میں ہیں خورسند

He, who predicts the Fate of man, and keeps his gaze eʹer fixed on sky:
Such man is unaware of fact that rank of self is very high.

Khudi Ko Jis Ne Falak Se Buland Tar Dekha
Wohi Hai Mamlikat-e-Subah-o-Sham Se Aagah

Those who perceive this fact so clear that dome of sky that spins around,
Has not the height as self of man. ʹBout world have formed an opinion sound.

Wohi Nigah Ke Na-Khoob-o-Khoob Se Mehram
Wohi Hai Dil Ke Hilal-o-Haraam Se Aagah

They are aware of all those things that charm and repel the human sight:
To them alone this fact is known what blackens heart, what renders bright.

نظر سپہر پہ رکھتا ہے جو ستارہ شناس
نہیں ہے اپنی خودی کے مقام سے آگاہ

بربطِ کون و مکاں جس کی خموشی پہ نثار
جس کے ہر تار میں ہیں سینکڑوں نغموں کے مزار
محشرستانِ نوا کا ہے امیں جس کا سکُوت
اور منّت کشِ ہنگامہ نہیں جس کا سکُوت
آہ! اُمیّد محبت کی بر آئی نہ کبھی
چوٹ مضراب کی اس ساز نے کھائی نہ کبھی
مگر آتی ہے نسیمِ چمنِ طُور کبھی
سمتِ گردُوں سے ہوائے نفَسِ حُور کبھی
چھیڑ آہستہ سے دیتی ہے مرا تارِ حیات
جس سے ہوتی ہے رِہا رُوحِ گرفتارِ حیات
نغمۂ یاس کی دھیمی سی صدا اُٹھتی ہے
اشک کے قافلے کو بانگِ درا اُٹھتی ہے
جس طرح رفعتِ شبنم ہے مذاقِ رم سے
میری فطرت کی بلندی ہے نوائے غم سے

In Autumn my breath makes birds that chirp in morn,
Imbibe much joy and feel no more forlorn.

Lekin Mujhe Paida Kiya Uss Dais Mein Tu Ne
Jis Dais Ke Bande Hain Ghulami Pe Razamand!

O God, to such a land I have been sent,
Where men in abject bondage feel content.

میں بندۂ ناداں ہوں، مگر شُکر ہے تیرا
رکھتا ہوں نہاں خانۂ لاہُوت سے پیوند
اک ولولۂ تازہ دیا مَیں نے دلوں کو
لاہور سے تا خاکِ بخارا و سمرقند
تاثیر ہے یہ میرے نفَس کی کہ خزاں میں
مُرغانِ سحَر خواں مری صحبت میں ہیں خورسند
لیکن مجھے پیدا کیا اُس دیس میں تُو نے
جس دیس کے بندے ہیں غلامی پہ رضا مند!

Aik Nukta Ke Ghulamon Ke Liye Hai Ikseer

The wisdom of the East and West
Has taught me something that will prove elixir to slaves:

Deen Ho, Falsafa Ho, Faqr Ho, Sultani Ho
Hote Hain Pukhta Aqaid Ki Bina Par Tameer

Whether it is religion or philosophy, poverty or kingship –
All take firm beliefs as their base.

Harf Uss Qoum Ka Be-Souz, Amal Zaar-o-Zuboon
Ho Gya Pukhta Aqaid Se Tehi Jis Ka Zameer!

The words that a nation speaks are dead and its actions are futile
If its heart is bereft of firm beliefs.

From Qalandarʹs eyes canʹt hid remain.

Maloom Hain Mujh Ko Tere Ahwal Ke Main Bhi
Muddat Huwi Guzra Tha Iss Rah Se

I know your states for I too crost,
These tracts in times which now are past.

Alfaz Ke Pechon Mein Ulajhte Nahin Dana
Ghawwas Ko Matlab Hai Sadaf Se Ke Guhar Se!

The wise ʹbout words do not quarrel,
He heeds not shell who seeks the pearl.

Paida Hai Faqat Halq-e-Arbab-e-Junoon Mein

افکار جوانوں کے خفی ہوں کہ جَلی ہوں
پوشیدہ نہیں مردِ قلندر کی نظر سے
معلوم ہیں مجھ کو ترے احوال کہ مَیں بھی
مُدّت ہوئی گزرا تھا اسی راہ گزر سے
الفاظ کے پیچوں میں اُلجھتے نہیں دانا
غوّاص کو مطلب ہے صدَف سے کہ گُہر سے!
پیدا ہے فقط حلقۂ اربابِ جُنوں میں
وہ عقل کہ پا جاتی ہے شُعلے کو شرر سے
جس معنیِ پیچیدہ کی تصدیق کرے دل
قیمت میں بہت بڑھ کے ہے تابندہ گُہر سے
یا مُردہ ہے یا نَزع کی حالت میں گرفتار
جو فلسفہ لِکھّا نہ گیا خونِ جگر سے

Woh Kuch Aur Shay Hai, Mohabbat Nahin Hai

Ye Johar Agar Kar Farma Nahin Hai

یہ جوہر اگر کار فرما نہیں ہے
تو ہیں علم و حکمت فقط شیشہ بازی
نہ محتاجِ سُلطاں، نہ مرعوبِ سُلطاں
محبّت ہے آزادی و بے نیازی
مِرا فقر بہتر ہے اسکندری سے
یہ آدم گری ہے، وہ آئینہ سازی

At the dawn when my eye was enjoying the panorama
I saw that a ray of the sun was wandering about

Main Ne Pucha Uss Kiran Se “Ae Sarapa Iztarab!
Teri Jaan-e-Na-Shakeeba Mein Hai Kaisa Iztarab

I asked the ray, “O head to foot restlessness!
What kind of restlessness your impatient life has!

Tu Koi Choti Si Bijli Hai Ke Jis Ko Asman
Kar Raha Hai Khirman-e-Aqwam Ki Khatir Jawan

Are you a small little lightning, which the sky
Is nurturing to fall on the harvest of nations

Ye Tarap Hai Ya Azal Se Teri Khu Hai, Kya Hai Ye
Raqs Hai, Awargi Hai, Justujoo Hai, Kya Hai Ye?”

Is this a flash, or your eternal nature, what is it?
Is it a dance? wandering? seeking what is it?”

Surma Ban Kar Chashm-e-Insaan Mein Sama Jaun Gi Main
Raat Ne Jo Kuch Chupa Rakha Tha, Dikhlaun Gi Main

Becoming collyrium I shall enter the human eye
Whatever night had hidden I shall show to the eye

Tere Maston Mein Koi Jooya’ay Hoshiyari Bhi Hai
Sone Walon Mein Kisi Ko Zauq-e-Baidari Bhi Hai?”

Among your ecstatics is there any seeker of prudence also?
Among the sleeping people is anyone with taste of awakening also?”

صبح جب میری نگہ سودائیِ نظّارہ تھی
آسماں پر اک شُعاعِ آفتاب آوارہ تھی
مَیں نے پُوچھا اُس کرن سے “اے سراپا اضطراب!
تیری جانِ ناشکیبا میں ہے کیسا اضطراب
تُو کوئی چھوٹی سی بجلی ہے کہ جس کو آسماں
کر رہا ہے خرمنِ اقوام کی خاطر جواں
یہ تڑپ ہے یا ازل سے تیری خُو ہے، کیا ہے یہ
رقص ہے، آوارگی ہے، جُستجو ہے، کیا ہے یہ؟”
“خُفتہ ہنگامے ہیں میری ہستیِ خاموش میں
پرورش پائی ہے مَیں نے صُبح کی آغوش میں
مُضطرب ہر دَم مری تقدیر رکھتی ہے مجھے
جُستجو میں لذّتِ تنویر رکھتی ہے مجھے
برقِ آتش خُو نہیں، فطرت میں گو ناری ہوں مَیں
مہرِ عالم تاب کا پیغامِ بیداری ہوں مَیں
سُرمہ بن کر چشمِ انساں میں سما جاؤں گی مَیں
رات نے جو کچھ چھُپا رکھّا تھا، دِکھلاؤں گی مَیں
تیرے مستوں میں کوئی جویائے ہشیاری بھی ہے
سونے والوں میں کسی کو ذوقِ بیداری بھی ہے؟”

Being present there, my impetuous tongue to silence I could not resign
When an order from God of admission on high came the way of that reverend divine;

Arz Ki Main Ne, Elahi! Meri Takseer Maaf
Khush Na Ayen Ge Isse Hoor-o-Sharab-o-Lab-e-Kisht

I humbly addressed the Almighty: O Lord, Excuse this presumption of mine,
But he’ll never relish the virgins of heaven, The garden’s green borders, the wine!

Behas-o-Takrak Iss Allah Ke Bande Ki Sarisht

For paradise isn’t place for a preacher to meddle and meddle and mangle,
And he, pious man—second nature to him is the need to dispute and to jangle;

Hai Badamozi-e-Aqwam-o-Milal Kaam Iss Ka
Aur Jannat Mein Na Masjid, Na Kalisa, Na Kunisht!

And only the strong hand is fit to guard the creed:
Let no-one trust man’s native wit to serve such need.

Ae Mard-e-Khuda! Yujh Ko Woh Quwwat Nahin Hasil
Ja Baith Kisi Ghaar Mein Allah Ko Kar Yaad

But that strength, preacher, we shall not find in your hand muster;

Tare Kehne Lage Qamar Se

Trembling at the chill breath of dawn
The fearful stars said to the moon:

Nazare Rahe Wohi Falak Par
Hum Thak Bhi Gaye Chamak Chamak Kar

‘About us lies heaven’s changeless scene
Where wearied we must shine, still shine,

Kaam Apna Hai Subah-o-Shaam Chalna
Chalna, Chalna, Madaam Chalna

Tasked to move on, on, morn and eve—
To move, to move, for ever move!

Betaab Hai Iss Jahan Ki Har Shay
Kehte Hain Jise Sukoon, Nahin Hain

No creature of this world knows rest,
Nowhere can fabled peace exist,

Rehte Hain Sitam Kash-e-Safar Sub
Tare, Insan, Shajar, Hajar Sub

All things condemned by tyrant laws
To wander, stars, men, rocks, and tress—

Swift runs the shadowy steed of time

Iss Reh Mein Maqam Be-Mehel Hai
Poshida Qarar Mein Ajal Hai

And there’s no loitering on that oath,
For hidden in repose lurks death:

Chalne Wale Nikl Gye Hain
Jo Thehre Zra, Kuchal Gye Hain

They that press on win clear—the late,
The laggard, trampled underfoot.

Anjaam Hai Iss Kharaam Ka Husn
Aghaz Hai Ishq, Intihaa Husn

And what the goal of all this haste?—
Its cradle love, beauty its quest.’

If its glory doesn’t make the darkness of character radiant,
Muslim cannot judge his elevated position.

Main Ne Ae Meer-e-Sipah! Teri Sipah Dekhi Hai
‘QUL HUW ALLAH’ Ki Shamsheer Se Khali Hain Nayam

Chief of warriors, I have witnessed your array;
Their sheaths are devoid of the sword of Say: 'He is Allah'

Aah, Iss Raaz Se Waqif Hai Na Mullah, Na Faqeeh
Wahdat Afkar Ki Be-Wahdat-e-Kirdar Hai Kham

Ah! Neither mullah nor faqih envisages the fact that
Unity of thought without unity of action is imperfect.

Qoum Kya Cheez Hai, Qoumon Ki Imamat Kya Hai
Iss Ko Kya Samjhain Ye Bechare Do Rakat Ke Imam!

AadhiBaat 2022-12-06 | Humanity needs three things today– a spiritual interpretation of the universe, spiritual emancipation of the individual, and basic principles of a universal import directing the evolution of human society on a spiritual basis. Modern Europe has, no doubt, built idealistic systems on these lines, but experience shows that truth revealed through pure reason is incapable of bringing that fire of living conviction which personal revelation alone can bring. This is the reason why pure thought has so little influenced men, while religion has always elevated individuals, and transformed whole societies.

The idealism of Europe never became a living factor in her life, and the result is a perverted ego seeking itself through mutually intolerant democracies whose sole function is to exploit the poor in the interest of the rich. Believe me, Europe today is the greatest hindrance in the way of man’s ethical advancement. The Muslim, on the other hand, is in possession of these ultimate ideas on the basis of a revelation, which, speaking from the inmost depths of life, internalizes its own apparent externality. With him the spiritual basis of life is a matter of conviction for which even the least enlightened man among us can easily lay down his life; and in view of the basic idea of Islam that there can be no further revelation binding on man, we ought to be spiritually one of the most emancipated peoples on earth.

Early Muslims emerging out of the spiritual slavery of pre-Islamic Asia were not in a position to realize the true significance of this basic idea. Let the Muslim of today appreciate his position, reconstruct his social life in the light of ultimate principles, and evolve, out of the hitherto partially revealed purpose of Islam, that spiritual democracy which is the ultimate aim of Islam.
