A Walk Through Melbourne // Southern Cross to Melbourne Central! Taitset 2023-01-31 | Join me on a stroll through Melbourne's Central Business District, watching lots of trams and trains and a few other things along the way. We start at about 3:45pm on the afternoon of Wednesday 25th of January 2023. It's a warm summer afternoon but not too hot - about 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). We get off a train at Southern Cross station, then walk south along Spencer Street, east up Flinders Street (catching a W class tram part of the way), north up Elizabeth Street, east along Collins Street, and north up Swanston Street - the busiest tram corridor in the world. Finally we drop down into Melbourne Central station.This is obviously a very long-form video and probably won't be to everyone's taste, but the aim of this kind of thing is to capture a snapshot of the city at this particular moment in time, and will hopefully be even more interesting in the future. Skitube: Australias Amazing Alpine Railway! Taitset 2022-10-10 | Skitube is a fascinating alpine rack railway, located in the Snowy Mountains of southern New South Wales, and providing access to the ski fields at Perisher Valley and Blue Cow in the Kosciuszko National Park. It's 1435mm Standard Gauge, and electrified at 1500v DC using overhead wires. The trains are a really unusual design, and the railway has several features which are not seen anywhere else in Australia, and in some cases - the world. As usual, this video is illustrated entirely with my own photos and videos. Taitset 2022-09-18 | Richmond Junction is a large complicated junction between Flinders Street (Melbourne's busiest suburban railway station) and Richmond, carrying all the eastern suburban lines as well as regional passenger and freight trains heading to and from Gippsland. In this video I attempt to explain what all the different tracks are for, and what routes trains normally take through this area. Flinders Street is a pretty flexible station, so most routes shown are just the most common ones: many variations are possible.A little note - in January 2023 after I made this video, the crossovers I mention at 04:04 were removed, so it is no longer possible to cross between the Caulfield Through and Local lines at Caulfield. Switzerlands Harderbahn Funicular! Taitset 2022-09-04 | The Harderbahn is a funicular railway dating from 1908, operating out of Interlaken, Switzerland. Like all funiculars, the cars travel at a very low speed, and the journey takes about 9 minutes in real time. This video is significantly, but if you want the authentic experience you can watch it in real time here: youtu.be/vyIvHpxj04Y The line climbs (or in this case descends) 755 metres in altitude over 1.47km of track. This is a 'driver's eye' view, although that phrase isn't really accurate for these cars as they're just one big passenger saloon with the driver positioned at the uphill end. Warragul Heritage Shuttles with A2 986 and A66 - August 2022 Taitset 2022-08-20 | Steamrail Victoria operated a series of heritage shuttles between Warragul and Longwarry on the Gippsland line, on Saturday 20th of August 2022. On the Down end of the train was 1915 built 4-6-0 steam locomotive A2 986. On the Up end of the train was classic EMD diesel loco A66, which entered service as B66 in 1952, then extensively rebuilt into an A class in 1985. It was the last A class in revenue service, running passenger trains for V/line until 2018. It has been kept on the V/line roster for use on heritage trains such as this one, and has recently been repainted into its original 1980s tangerine and grey livery. An Unlikely Survivor: The Eltham Trestle Bridge! Taitset 2022-07-24 | The wooden railway bridge at Eltham, on Melbourne's suburban Hurstbridge line, is the last surviving wooden bridge on the Victorian railway network. While other wooden bridges do still exist carrying trains on heritage lines, the one at Eltham is the only one still carrying regular trains on the main state system. This video explains why the bridge still exists, as well as going over some of its interesting physical features. The bridge was originally built when the line opened in 1902, and was electrified in 1923. Today it carries about 120 six-car electric suburban trains every weekday, and almost as many on weekends. The current operator is Metro Trains Melbourne, and all trains on the Hurstbridge line are currently Alstom X'trapolis sets. My Transport Tycoon/OpenTTD map - A guided tour! Taitset 2022-07-24 | OpenTTD is the open source version of the classic 90s game Transport Tycoon. This video is a tour of my huge map which I've been working on for a number of years, which is a complicated network featuring three large cities connected by a long main line, as well as countless other branches. It uses the Japan rollingstock set, which means the main network is 3'6"/1067mm narrow gauge. There is also a pretty extensive standard gauge Shinkansen/Bullet Train network. The map is on the Arctic landscape. There are numerous tram networks scattered around the place, using the Dutch tram set and the Modern tram set. The music playing in this video is the brilliant classic original soundtrack by John Broomhall. Parallel Run Around Melbourne - Welcome Back Red Rattlers! Taitset 2022-07-07 | Celebrating the return to service of the preserved four-car electric Tait set (often referred to as a 'Red Rattler'), Steamrail Victoria ran what may well be the most ambitious and complex suburban tour ever conducted in Melbourne. On Sunday 3rd of July 2022, the 'Welcome Back Red Rattlers' tour involved two trains, with extensive parallel running, totalling 110 minutes timetabled side-by-side. Scheduling parallel runs is obviously very complex, especially so in the busy suburban area, and credit must go to the train controllers and signallers who managed to pull this off.The electric Tait train consists of cars 381M-208T-230D-317M, which date from 1918, 1910, 1910 and 1915 respectively. These wooden bodied trains ran in intensive suburban service until 1984. The preserved set had been unable to run on the network since 2004, and has only recently returned to operation. The Tait set is maintained by Elecrail, a division of Steamrail.The second train consists of 5 'E' type country passenger cars, propelled in push-pull formation by a pair of 2-8-0 K class steam locomotives. On the east end of the train is K100: This is actually K153 in disguise. K153 was built in 1940, but has been temporarily modified to an approximate 1920s appearance to celebrate 100 years of the K class this year. No original Ks from that era were preserved, but 153 is doing a good job of looking the part. On the west end of the train is 1943 built K183, looking brilliant in blue - which is not historically accurate (they were all black) but looks mighty fine. K183 has also only just returned to service in the past year or so, after it was seriously damaged in a fatal level crossing accident in 2002.The morning began at North Melbourne station, with the Tait set arriving first and waiting in platform 3. The steam train arrived in platform 5, and the trains departed parallel and ran through the city to Flinders Street. From there the parallel running continued on the quadruple track to Burnley, then on the triple track section to Box Hill. From there the Tait set ran ahead to Blackburn, where it waited in platform 3 for the steam train to overtake. This situation was reversed at Ringwood, with the steam train passengers getting a view of the Tait running through. From there the steam train ran on the Belgrave line to Upper Ferntree Gully, then returned to the city for a servicing stop, before proceeding back out to Blackburn. During this time the Tait set ran to Lilydale, then ran two local shuttles back to Ringwood. The Tait set then departed Lilydale a final time, overtook the steam train at Blackburn, then waited for it to catch up at Box Hill. The trains then ran parallel all the way back through the city, then out west to Sunshine. From there the trains proceeded indivually to Calder Park Sidings, between Sydenham and Diggers Rest. TRAIN OF LIGHTS - Puffing Billy Railway - Winter 2022 Taitset 2022-07-02 | Puffing Billy operated their inaugural 'Train of Lights' season over the winter school holidays of 2022, running every night for two weeks. Every trip sold out within a matter of days. The Train of Lights operated on the outer part of the line between Lakeside and Gembrook stations, and was hauled by former South African Railways NG/G16 class Garratt No.129, built 1951. The entire train was equipped with a complicated system of lighting, which changed throughout the journey and interacted with the landscape. Two NQR flat wagons were equipped with generators to supply lighting power, and mounted with projectors which created effects around the train. This was a really awesome experience, and I highly recommend it if they do another season, which I'm sure they will!The Puffing Billy Railway is the former Victorian Railways Gembrook line, which was one of four 762mm (2'6") narrow gauge lines operated by the VR. Taitset 2022-06-28 | New Zealand's capital city Wellington is home to a fascinating and attractive suburban railway network, which has an interesting history and provides amazingly good coverage, for what is actually a rather small city. The 1067mm (3'6") gauge system consists of four electrified lines (1500v DC), as well as some longer distance diesel hauled commuter routes. In this video I talk about some of the interesting features of the network, as well as pointing out some of the scenic highlights. The Overland - How can we fix it? Taitset 2022-06-08 | The Overland is an Australian long-distance passenger train which has operated between Adelaide and Melbourne in various forms since 1887. Once considered an essential passenger service, and running in both directions every single night, today the train is lucky to still run at all - being timetabled to make just two return trips per week. In this video I explore some relatively simple changes which I think could be made to return this train to a useful passenger service, rather than the attempted-tourist novelty it is today. I am not covering major or mega-expensive options that would make this train truly world-class, instead the focus on this video is on achievable short term changes which would bring the train back to a standard that attracts patronage. I make several comparisons to the NSW TrainLink XPT service which operates between Melbourne and Sydney - this train is also far from perfect, but I think forms a good template of what sort of thing can work in a similar environment. Winter Morning at Flinders Street Station - June 2022 Taitset 2022-06-02 | It's about 7am on the first morning of winter 2022, it's raining and about 8 degrees Celsius.. good time to go watch some trains? The city is just waking up and the morning peak just beginning. We start outside at the intersection of Flinders and Swanston Streets. The Flinders Street building is lit up in black yellow & red - the colours of the Australian Aboriginal Flag - in recognition of National Reconciliation Week: https://www.reconciliation.org.au/our-work/national-reconciliation-week/We then walk down to Platforms 4 & 5, which are generally the Northern Group platforms, although we do see one Burnley Group train use Platform 4. Australian Railway Signalling - Conflicting Aspects Taitset 2022-05-23 | The separate states of Australia are all responsible for managing their own railway networks, and as a result each has evolved in very different ways. In the 20th century the busier networks started adopting more complex signalling systems, and this was not standardised across the country. As a result of this, the systems we see today have many signal aspects which mean completely different things in different states. Riding the Tait set - First public run in 18 years! Taitset 2022-04-24 | After an absence of 18 years, the preserved four car 'Tait' electric multiple unit set has finally returned to public operation. This video is taken onboard the the first public run bound for Pakenham on 23rd of April 2022. We are riding motor car 381M, and this footage was taken between Richmond and Murrumbeena, including the 'Skyrail' elevated section beyond Caulfield. I was on the last tour in January 2004, and it was great seeing a whole new generation of railfans enjoying this trip. The four cars making up this train were built between 1910 and 1918, and were in regular service until the early 1980s. Wynyard Station - Sydney Underground - March 2022 Taitset 2022-04-15 | Double-deck electric suburban trains in the Sydney underground at Wynyard station. Wynyard opened in 1932, and is part of the route over the Sydney Harbour Bridge to the North Shore line. This video was taken on a day of special celebrations for the Harbour Bridge's 90th birthday, on Saturday 19th of March 2022. We are standing on platforms 3 and 4, which are the Up and Down North Shore platforms respectively. A few things to note during the video: at 00:50 a Waratah set is seen running through empty cars. The train at 04:01 is the first of the second series Waratahs, set B1. It was running a special extra service to North Sydney as part of the celebrations, and is displaying a special destination board reading 'Sydney Harbour Bridge - 90 years 1932-2022.' I believe this train was supposed to pass vintage single-deck set F1 in the middle of the bridge, and stop for a photo opportunity - but if that happened, I haven't actually seen a photo of it. At 05:19 a Berowra train moves cautiously into the platform, approaching the a red 'Home' signal (explainer on Sydney's signalling here: youtu.be/dK1_35OGQh4 ). This train was being held briefly as vintage set F1 had just departed the other platform and run through the crossover to proceed this train. If you listen carefully, you can hear the F set's traction motors working up the tunnel. Sydney Tram Destination Rolls - Sydney Tramway Museum Taitset 2022-04-12 | A look through two complete destination rolls on trams at the Sydney Tramway Museum - First up is O class No.805, which has a roll containing predominantly destinations in the west and south-west. Then C class No.290 (the oldest operating electric tram in Australia) which has a roll of destinations for the North Sydney/Manly systems. The Sydney tram network was a bit unusual in that it didn't use route numbers, relying on destination names only. The destos are a clever design incorporating coloured patterns (the North Sydney ones are black and white) which would have made identifying trams from a distance much easier, and is something I think actually should be more common on public transport systems today. You will also note that sometimes different destinations can be produced by making a half-turn: For instance at 00:29 the destination is 'George St And Fort Macquarie,' then a half turn later at 00:30 it displays 'Circular Quay via George Street.' Trains at Sydneys Domestic Airport Station - March 2022 Taitset 2022-04-07 | Sydney's airport railway line opened in the year 2000, and is a great example of an airport connection being integrated into an existing transport system. It is served by regular double-deck electric suburban trains, and was basically built as a diversion of the East Hills line, meaning it provides connections in both directions and is a useful route beyond just airport traffic. The line is fully underground, and passes underneath Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) with stations at Domestic and International terminals. A well publicised down side of this service is that it's very expensive to use - a special airport station fee is charged for anyone using these stations which is about $18 - way more than any other public transport fare in Sydney. However the high level of convenience means it it still well used. In this video we see a couple of 'Waratah' B sets, one on a Down Revesby service, then another on the Up heading for the City Circle. Sydney Centrals Flying Junctions - Explained! Taitset 2022-04-04 | On the southern approach to the suburban platforms at Sydney's Central station, is an ingenious piece of infrastructure known as 'the flying junctions' or simply 'the flyovers.' It was built as part of the original suburban electrification scheme in 1926, and allowed trains coming in from the suburbs to cross over to any of the suburban platforms without conflicting with trains travelling in the opposite direction. The layout was changed slightly in the year 2000 when the newly constructed Sydney Airport line was cut in half way along the structure. This slightly reduced the usability of the layout, but it is still an incredibly useful feature which allows a huge amount of flexibility in the case of disruptions. We are standing on Platform 3 which is the Down North Shore, and can also see trains on the Up Shore coming through Platform 2. We see a single Tangara, and lots of Waratah sets.
