As a featured performer on the Hollywood Barn Dance, he made a place for himself in Country Music history. In 1946 he accepted a position with Capitol Records, who were gearing up for the still as yet undefined Bakersfield movement. An A&R executive with Capitol for 20 years, Stone discovered Tennessee Ernie Ford, whom he managed from 1947 to 1957, Molly Bee, Hank Thompson, and others who were flocking to L.A. to record.In spite of his success at Capitol, Stone was best remembered for his radio work. His show on Pasadena radio station KXLA, Dinner Bell Roundup, was a daily variety presentation that brought large numbers of Country & Western entertainers into the homes of his listeners. Making his way on a southern circuit, he appeared regularly on TV around Florida, Missouri, and Nashville, and such exposure in the music city lead to a recording contract with Columbia where he cut a bunch of Rockabilly singles in the late ‘50s that never attracted much attention, although his frenzied Rocker “No More, No More, No More” subsequently gained a cult following. Bobby Lord soldiered on with a career as a country television presenter, first on a local Nashville station in the ‘60s then as an outdoorsman on The Nashville Network in the ‘80s.A native of Florida raised in Tampa, Bobby Lord received his first big break when he headed to Philadelphia after winning a talent contest at the 1951 Florida State Fair. Returning to Florida, he performed regularly on local television, as well as playing live, gaining an audience and the attention of songwriter Boudleaux Bryant, who kick-started the singer’s signing to Columbia in 1954. At his first session he cut the wild “No More, No More, No More,” and over the next year, he alternated between this loose-limbed Rockabilly and lean Honky Tonk, sometimes finding songs that split the difference between the two, such as “Hawk-Eye,” which received a big push in 1955. Any momentum Lord may have had with “Hawk-Eye” was undercut by a competing cover by pop crooner Frankie Laine, but neither turned into a significant hit. Still, the 45 gained some attention for Lord and he threw himself into Rockabilly in 1956, taking a version of Wanda Jackson’s “Without Your Love” into Billboard’s Country Top Ten, then his direction shifted toward sweeter Pop and Ballads, which also didn’t garner much chart action. Throughout his chart struggles, Lord performed regularly on the Red Foley-hosted, Springfield, Missouri-based TV and Radio show Ozark Jubilee, sometimes filling in for Red Foley himself. Once the Rockabilly and Teen Pop failed to pan out, Lord devoted himself to Country, making his home in Nashville and joining the Grand Ole Opry cast. He signed to Hickory after his Columbia contract expired, but he made a greater impact hosting The Bobby Lord Show on WSM-TV beginning in September 1963. It was successful enough that it headed into syndication in 1965, but it came to a close in 1968. Shortly afterward, Lord curbed his music career, concentrating instead on developing vacation and recreation properties in Florida, but he still played, signing with Decca where he had a Top 20 single in 1970 with “You and Me Against the World.” Bobby Lord sporadically recorded in the ‘70s as he transitioned to businessman, coming back to TV in 1983 to host The Nashville Network’s Country Sportsman, a show that combined his outdoor and music interests. At the age of four, Rydell would sit in front of the TV and impersonate such performers as Milton Berle, Louis Prima, and Johnny Ray. He also admired drummer Gene Krupa and began playing the drums at the age of six. He learned how to play the piano and guitar during his childhood.Musician, actor, guitarist, pianist of the Pop Music and Folk genres, he scored numerous Top 40 singles on the American Pop Charts including the gold records "Honeycomb" (1957), "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" (1957) "Oh-Oh, I'm Falling In Love Again" (1958) and "Secretly" (1958). Rodgers also found acting parts in motion pictures including the starring role in "The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come" (1961) and "Backdoor to Hell" (1964) which co-starred a young Jack Nicholson.In 1967, Rodgers signed a new deal with A&M Records, and his career was looking up; his song "Child of Clay'' rose to number 31 on the singles charts, and his first album for the label was faring well. But his good luck abandoned him on December 1, 1967; an assailant brutally beat Rodgers and left him with a severe skull fracture that had to be repaired with a metal plate. They included his most popular successes: "Wild One" (his highest scoring single, at number 2), "Volare" (number 4), "Swingin' School" (number 5), "Kissin' Time" (number 11), "Sway" (number 14), "I've Got Bonnie" (number 18), and "The Cha-Cha-Cha" (number 10). His last major chart success was "Forget Him", which reached number 4 on the Hot 100 in January 1964. After retiring from performing himself, he took on the role of director/producer of Playboy's Girls of Rock & Roll at the Maxim Hotel and Caesars Tahoe for a five-year run. In 1991, he and partner Mark Callas formed Springtime Productions and produced "American Superstars" in Loughlin, Tahoe, Reno. Biloxi, Gulfport, Greece, and Las Vegas. SIMPSON have been born in the state, at Sullivan Hollow, Ashland City, some twenty odd miles from Nashville on 24th March, 1928.His vocal whilst being good is cleverly subtle, and the Luther Perkins type guitar work provide a solid base to assist a lightly touched steel man. As was mentioned briefly at the start of this article, his family was involved in the construction business and this may have been the reason for his departure to Alaska in the late Fifties. He soon got into radio working at both KBYR and KFAD in Anchorage. In 1959 whilst on leave in Nashville he cut two tracks which he sent to Hank Harral’s Caprock setup in West Texas. He did for him his first version of « I’m an Oil Field Boy ». It does seem that this may be how his Sixties discs were all cut as he also appeared on Starday itself with one of his best sellers « The Alcan Run », a nice trucking number, and had at least two releases on their subsidiary Nashville in the early Sixties. He also turns up on Sims in 1965. His last known, to me at last, recordings were two LPs on his own Sourdough label entitled « Sings Alaska », on which Jimmy was involved in composing 11 out of the twelve songs, and « Sings of Iditarod trail », in 2003.bopping.org/jimmy-simpson-the-oil-field-boy

Brinkley was one of the top session guitarists in Texas during the 1950s and '60s, and got to play on recordings by Andy Starr, Jerry Fuller, and the Chuck-A-Lucks, as well as cutting a his own songs. He was one of those journeyman figures whose career in Country helped pave the way for Rock & Roll, even if he never had a hit himself with the newer music. Brinkley was born and raised in Texas, and started singing with The Crystal Springs Ramblers ("Fort Worth Stomp" etc...) in 1937. He got his big break at the end of the '30s when he joined the Light Crust Doughboys as a guitarist and singer. He was the featured vocalist on the group's 1941 recordings sides.Brinkley had made further records after World War II, but he was primarily known as a top session guitarist, based in the Dallas area and playing regularly on numerous sessions for other artists. Along with his fellow guitarists Paul Buskirk and Lefty Perkins, he became a mainstay of Joe Leonard's Linn Records label.Brinkley's bluesy Western Swing licks adapted easily to Rockabilly and mainstream Rock And Roll as it evolved, and he played a big part on such Hot-Rocking sides as the Chuck-A-Lucks "Disc Jockey Fever" and Andy Starr's "Do It Right Now." Brinkley not only played lead guitar but usually led these studio bands as well. The 50s saw Brinkley turned into one of the mainstays of the Linn label and one of the busier guitar players in Dallas-Fort Worth, although he did cut one single from Dot Records in the mid-'50s. In 1958, Brinkley billed as J.B. Brinkley cut a single under his own name for Leonard.More impressive musically was the Brinkley-authored B-side,an instrumental called "Guitar Smoke" that was reminiscent of "Raunchy" with more for the guitar to do and some impressive baritone sax work by Jodie Lyons.This single became the record by which Joe Leonard introduced the Lin subsidiary label Kliff Records.Brinkley kept active on the Texas music scene for many years, playing on innumerable Rock & Roll and Country sessions, and cutting songs for Major Bill Smith (the producer of Bruce Channel's "Hey Baby" and Paul & Paula's "Hey Paula," and J Frank Wilson's "Last Kiss. He passed away at age 68.

Bashell formed a five-piece band in the late 1940s, their recording of the Slovenian folk song, "Zidana Marela" ("Silk Umbrella") was successful.Bashell said : It sold out as fast as they could make the records. Then RCA Victor came along and hired us to make records for them, and we were on the RCA label for almost eight years.RCA wanted Bashell to promote the records on a lengthy national tour, but he refused. The Poe-Kats were one of the first interracial Rock And Roll groups, featuring Bobby Poe performing covers of Elvis Presley & Jerry Lee Lewis numbers and pianist "Big" Al Downing (January 9, 1940 - July 4, 2005) doing the lead vocals on their Fats Domino and Little Richard songs. Lead guitarist Vernon Sandusky and drummer Joe Brawley rounded out the quartet. They toured with Wanda Jackson and also can be found on her early Capitol Records recordings, including the Rockabilly classic "Let's Have A Party" "Money, Honey" "Long Tall Sally" "Mean Mean Man" "Rock Your Baby" .Bobby Poe and The Poe Kats got the attention of Sam Phillips of Sun Records with their first recorded track, "Rock and Roll Record Girl" based on the music of the old standard "Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy", "Rock and Roll Record Girl" was at first blocked from release by Wesley Rose of Acuff-Rose because of that fact. By the time all of the legal hurdles were cleared, Sam Phillips was no longer interested in releasing the track. Instead, Dallas, Texas radio personality Jim Lowe stepped in and released the single on his White Rock Records label "Rock and Roll Record Girl" backed with "Rock and Roll Boogie" became a #1 single in the state of Texas. After one more single for Jim Lowe's White Rock Records entitled "Piano Nellie", under the name of Bobby Brant and The Rhythm Rockers, Bobby Poe gave up his career as an artist to become an artist manager. Born in Piqua, Ohio, the Mills Brothers lived with their father John Hutchinson Mills, a barber, and their mother, Eathel Harrington. As children, the Mills Brothers sang at local churches. For extra money, they also sang on street corners and at May’s Opera House, a local movie theater, between films. During these performances, the Mills Brothers began to develop their distinctive sound, which would later influence other doo-wop and rhythm and blues performers. While singing four-part harmonies, John Jr. played guitar and the brothers imitated the instruments of an orchestra, such as the saxophone, trumpet, and tuba.In 1925, WLW radio hired the brothers and the family moved to Cincinnati. A quick look at his songwriting portfolio shows that he composed "Daddy Sang Bass" for Johnny Cash, "I Was So Wrong" for Patsy Cline, and "Let Me Tell You About Love" for The Judds, big hits and classics all. His influence as the quintessential Rockabilly artist has played a big part in the development of every generation of rockers to come down the pike since, from the Beatles' George Harrison to the Stray Cats' Brian Setzer to a myriad of others in the country field as well. His guitar style is the other twin peak -- along with that of Elvis' lead man Scotty Moore -- of Rockabilly's instrumental center, so pervasive that modern-day players automatically gravitate toward it when called upon to deliver the style, not even realizing that they're playing Perkins licks, sometimes note for note. As a singer, his interpretation of Country ballads is every bit as fine as his better-known Rockers. And within the framework of the best of his music is a strong sense of family and roots, all of which trace straight back to his humble beginnings.Working alongside Blacks in the field every day, it's not at all surprising that when Carl was gifted with a secondhand guitar, he went to a local sharecropper for lessons, learning firsthand the Boogie rhythm that he would later build a career on. By his teens, Carl was playing electric guitar and had recruited his brothers Jay on rhythm guitar and Clayton on string bass to become his first band. The Perkins Brothers Band, featuring both Carl and Jay on lead vocals, quickly established itself as the hottest band in the get-hot-or-go-home cutthroat Jackson, Tennessee.It was here that Carl started composing his first songs with an eye toward the future. Watching the dancefloor at all times for a reaction, Perkins kept reshaping these loosely structured songs until he had a completed composition, which would then be finally put to paper. Perkins was already sending demos to New York record companies, who kept rejecting him, sometimes explaining that this strange new hybrid of country with a Black rhythm fit no current commercial trend. But once Perkins heard Elvis on the radio, he not only knew what to call it, but knew that there was a record company person who finally understood it and was also willing to gamble in promoting it. That man was Sam Phillips and the record company was Sun Records, and that's exactly where Perkins headed in 1954 to get an audition.It was here at his first Sun audition that the structure of the Perkins Brothers Band changed forever. But after selling Elvis' contract to RCA in December, Perkins was encouraged to finally let his rocking soul come up for air at his next Sun session. And rock he did with a double whammy blast that proved to be his ticket to the bigs. The chance overhearing of a conversation at a dance one night between two teenagers coupled with a song idea suggestion from labelmate Johnny Cash inspired Perkins to approach Phillips with a new song he had written called "Blue Suede Shoes." After cutting two sides that Phillips planned on releasing as a single by the Perkins Brothers Band, Perkins laid down three takes each of "Blue Suede Shoes" and another rocker, "Honey Don't." A month later, Phillips decides to shelve the two country sides and go with the rockers as Perkins' next single. Three months later, "Blue Suede Shoes," a tune that borrowed stylistically from Pop, Country, and R&B music, sat at the top of all charts, the first record to accomplish such a feat while becoming Sun's first million-seller in the bargain.The follow-ups to "Shoes" were, in many ways, superior to his initial hit, but each succeeding Sun single held diminishing sales, and it wasn't until the British Invasion and the subsequent Rockabilly revival of the early '70s that the general public got to truly savor classics like "Boppin' the Blues," "Matchbox," "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby," "Your True Love," "Dixie Fried," "Put Your Cat Clothes On," and "All Mama's Children." While labelmates Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis (who played piano on "Matchbox") were scoring hit after hit, Perkins was becoming disillusioned with his fate, fueled by his increasing dependence on alcohol and the death of his brother Jay to cancer. He kept plugging along, and when Cash left Sun to go to Columbia in 1958, Perkins followed him over. The royalty rate was better, and Perkins had no shortage of great songs to record, but Columbia's Nashville watch-the-clock production methods killed any of the spontaneity that was the charm of the Sun records.
