Dr. Emily Petroff is a former researcher, forever astrophysicist, and current Associate Director for Strategic Partnerships, Grants, and Awards at Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
Previously, she acted as the project manager for the CHIME/FRB Collaboration, a consortium of 60+ researchers in Canada and internationally using the CHIME telescope to search for fast radio bursts.
Working in fast-paced research fields she has found it essential to learn key time management skills to prioritize work and be able to operate at a high level.

Those early experiments led to a beautiful, if counterintuitive, mathematical description of particle physics that has allowed us to make incredible leaps in technology and in our understanding of the universe.
In our Quantum 101 series, we've given you just a glimpse of that mind blowing world where waves can be particles and vice versa, energy is quantized, particles can be in two places at once, and uncertainty reigns.

The fastest baseball pitch ever thrown reached over 170 kilometers an hour. That's impressive. But even that record breaking fastball would never be able to pass through a solid brick wall.
It's just not possible. That is, unless we're playing quantum baseball.
A thrown baseball might have enough energy to rip through a piece of paper, but even the fastest pitch would just bounce off a brick wall.
Yet sometimes quantum particles are caught passing through barriers they don't seem to have enough energy to break through.
Logically, they should just bounce off. And yet there they are, sitting quite happily on the other side. How can that be possible?

Most smartphones today use a sensor called a complementary metal oxide semiconductor or CMOS. It's similar to a CCD or charge coupled device and works because of this one weird trick physicist discovered more than a century ago.

It’s a complicated topic to be sure, but Vieira is a master of explaining complex topics with relatable examples and anecdotes – something Lauren discovered as a student when she took a course he taught.
“Pedro takes some of those same concepts from graduate courses, but he paints some amazing non-technical pictures for us,” says Lauren. “No mathematical background required!” He explains why the universe might be a hologram and why, from a theoretical physics perspective, a messy bedroom can be a good thing.

What if we take computers and make them quantum? Up until now, we've made computers faster by giving them more memory and more processors. It's like filling a giant warehouse with more and more workers, each of whom can only do one task at a time.
Quantum computing is like tearing down the warehouse and building a new one. In the new Quantum warehouse, each worker is a multitasker capable of not just flipping bits on or off, but holding them in carefully suspended, indeterminate states while coordinating instantaneously with one another.

What he didn't like was the idea that randomness is so essential to the laws of physics, that even with the most precise measurements and carefully controlled experiments there would always be some level at which the outcome is effectively an educated guess. He believed there was another option.

According to Einstein’s theory of gravity, spacetime is both curved and dynamical. The theory had two surprising predictions: black holes and the expansion of the universe. In both cases, there are regions of spacetime that are outside the reach of the classical theory, the so-called “singularities.” To address them, we need a quantum mechanical description of spacetime.
Juan Maldacena studies black holes, string theory, and quantum field theory. In his July 27 Perimeter Public Lecture webcast, he described some ideas that arose from the study of quantum aspects of black holes. They involve an interesting connection between the basic description of quantum mechanics and the geometry of spacetime. He also delves into how wormholes are related to quantum entanglement.

Dark Matter Night was a live webcast brought to you by Perimeter Institute and the McDonald Institute. Starting off the evening, Katie Mack discussed the theoretical and observational foundations of dark matter at Perimeter Institute, where she holds the Hawking Chair in Cosmology and Science Communication. Next, Ken Clark, an associate professor at the Arthur B. McDonald Canadian Astroparticle Physics Research Institute, shared experimental approaches that could help solve the riddle of dark matter. We also got a guided video tour of SNOLAB, the state-of-the-art underground laboratory two kilometres beneath Sudbury.
