It can be hard to control the natural light outside when you're shooting boudoir portraits, but I have some tips and tricks for how to use composition in order to accomplish this idea. We are doing it in Oahu, Hawaii at one of their beautiful beaches that are perfect for photoshoots. I'm loving the Canon R5 in this photoshoot, since I typically use a Sony A9 it was a nice change.

I cannot believe I packed so much good information into this tutorial covering tips for boudoir photography.
All of the tips covered! Sheers - Place sheers on the windows to get softer light Light a candle so it smells nice in the studio
Greenery in the Studio - Adding plants can make for great foreground and background objects.
Welcome sign - Have a welcome sign to make clients feel special.
Have scissors to cut off clothing tags
Have sample albums out for when they walk in so they can flip through during hair so they can start getting excited about getting their own.
Double-sided tape - Keep outfits and robes from opening up, can keep necklaces in place
Music - Ask your clients what music they like.
Leading lines - Using leading lines can add interest to your photo, give it direction.
In direct light - Point their nose toward the sun
Using foreground elements, like plants, to add more interest to the photo.
Mess up the bed - To make photos in the bedroom look more natural and personal, mess up the sheets.
Mirrors: Use mirrors to add depth and interest to your photos
Messy hair - Straight clean perfect hair doesn't make as much sense for boudoir. We want that sexy bedhead look.
Step Stool - Have a latter to shoot from high above: in order to shoot from different angles, you can stand on some furniture, or get a step ladder to add an angle you didn't have before.
To make a photo look sexier, without it being any more revealing, play with having her straps fall off her shoulders.
Don't shoot in just lingerie - Things like sweaters, button-up shirts, tank tops, can add variety, playfulness, or a more natural look to your pictures.
WIth boudoir not everyone wants you to share their pictures online, but most are okay as long as their faces aren't recognizable. Make sure to take anonymous shots because clients might not want their faces shown, that way you can still share pictures from the shoot.
Editing Tip: Face brighten with radial filter darken edges
Wow, I'm so proud of us!

Pretty much any camera you get these days, no matter what type of photography its for is going to be impressive. The key is to get something that you need. Boudoir is a slower more controlled way to take pictures so you don't need fancy expensive gear. Reliable face detection and eye autofocus are going to be all you need. Four frames per second is plenty in continuous shooting mode. And a good full-frame sensor like canon makes and you should be set.

What a heck of a sunrise photoshoot this was in Hawaii! I've been wanting to photograph in this secret location for a year and we were finally able to make it happen. I didn't go into this photoshoot with a plan to teach you anything specific. I just wanted to give you an idea of why I chose certain outfits or different lighting situations. I hope this helps you get inside my mind of an outdoor behind the scenes photoshoot that can help you be a better photographer.

I can't believe Andrei let me use his $52,000 Phase 1 IQ4 XF camera. This thing has image quality like I've never seen it. I thought it would be good to see up next a Polaroid for comparison. J/k, I wanted to have some fun in the sun and see what this 150 megapixel camera was capable of. The Phase One has crazy things like a sizemographer, focus stacking and frame averaging that negates the need for ND filters. I'm super impressed by all of this and it was fun to try out a camera that is at the top of it.

This was such a fun boudoir photoshoot. Probably because of how different it was from what I normally take pictures of. It had a lot of challenges to make these portraits happen in the sky. I learned a lot about what I want to do next time, like time of day, decisions on where I want to sit. What color I want her clothes to be. But that is what I love about trying new things. You never know what you're going to learn.

Huge thanks to the Do More Photographer community for helping out with this one. I asked them for a few scenarios and they did not disappoint.
There are so many things that you should not say to have good etiquette during a boudoir photo shoot. It is isn't only about taking pictures but about making your client or model feel comfortable.
If you know of any funny boudoir things, let's keep them classy, put those in the comments.

I'm finally ready to share most of the tips and tricks in my boudoir videography course. I want you guys to get out and start shooting video! There have been videos of women in slow motion a long time, but opening it up to everyday women and making it fun and classy is really something more new and there aren't many boudoir photographers that are implementing it.
Do you think you would ever use a boudoir video with one of your client shoots? Why or why not?
I've been wanting to make this video on how to shoot reflection photos for a while, it has been a really requested topic! Most people should have access to mirrors and phones. I had a great time making this GFX 50r review for you guys. I try to stay away from gear videos as much as possible, but I thought this was a good thing to share. The GFX has helped my photography be more creative, slow me down and those are all things that I need in my business right now. Sometimes you have to go backwards to go forward. I'll have to keep my Sony for video and for times when I need a faster camera but I have used the GFX almost exclusively since I've picked it up. If you have any other questions with it don't hesitate to ask!

I never thought I would do an iPhone unboxing video so I thought I would have some fun with it. This is the brand new iPhone 11 Pro Max and I'm loving it so far. I can't believe how well the camera performed.
This was fun for me because so much of my business I know exactly what to do an how I am going to capture these portraits, but there were surprises and I didn't know what to expect during this boudoir photoshoot.

What's up everybody, I hope everyone has as fun watching this crazy photography challenge as we had making it. It was hard and it was fast, but I'm so happy with how it turned out. Shooting in 2 minutes changes most of what you are used to about photography. You sometimes get shifted to be extra creative, you sometimes fall back on the only things that you know. Either way, it was exciting to do here in Venice CA.

Hey Sasser family! This was a fun and challenging video to make because I don't usually shoot in small spaces or studios. This was a very small hotel to shoot in and was hard for my 50mm to capture everything I wanted to when taking pictures. These are three of the techniques or tips that I use when I have to take pictures in a small space like this. Shooting from above or below changes the perspective of picture and add another dimension to the room. Shooting through something, or using something as a foreground object adds depth to your portraits. Shooting detail photos is a great way to upsell in an album.
I hope this video is really helpful for everyone who is struggling to shoot in their own tiny studios!
If anything jumps out at you for what to you want to learn in the future don't hesitate to ask!

How many times have you heard "You're too expensive!" Or "This other photographer charges way less than you do, can I get your services for cheaper?"
This exists in every business, not just boudoir photography, but wedding photography, portrait photography and outside of that so many other service jobs. I feel for you. It can be hard to maintain your confidence when someone is saying that you are not worth it.
I wanted to share my typical response when someone tells me this. It isn't rude, it isn't full of guilt, it is just a simple admission that boudoir photography IS expensive and there are other photographers out there that are cheaper and that is totally fine, but that is not you. I hope this helps out your boudoir business!! I know it has helped mine a bunch.

I get a ton of comments on why I shoot 400 ISO instead of 100 ISO and I thought it was time to start to talk about this camera setting and the reason behind it. With modern cameras like a Sony a9 or canon 5d mark IV or anything else you shouldn't be able to see any noise in the image until about 2000 or higher ISO. This means that keeping my camera at 400 ISO I am able to only worry about one of the exposure compensation methods, which is shutter speed. And you won't be able to tell a difference in the image, other than it's brightness.
I think photographers worry about the wrong thing too often. The amount of noise in a boudoir picture isn't what matters. The important things are in the client experience, the client comfort, the angle or the photo, the presentation and so much more. Let's start focusing on the things that are most important in boudoir photography.
