Craig H. Benson is the Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Virginia (UVA) and a renowned geoenvironmental engineer with a distinguished record of research. Recognized worldwide for his expertise in waste containment systems, he is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. His work is the interface of the built and natural environments and is focused on environmental containment of solid, hazardous, radioactive, and mining wastes; beneficial use of industrial byproducts; and sustainable infrastructure.
Benson has been conducting experimental and analytical research in geoenvironmental engineering for over 30 years. His research has included laboratory studies, large-scale field experiments, and computer modeling, and has led to fundamental advances in design, construction, and performance assessment of barrier systems used for waste containment facilities. Findings from his research on lining systems have been incorporated into federal and state codes as well as guidance documents issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state regulatory authorities.

Our fourth in the series will be presented Thursday, January 18, at 2pm ET. Rod Kostaschuk of BGC Engineering will present on the Ten Mile Slide.
The presentation will summarize the design and construction of slope stabilization at Ten Mile Slide undertaken by the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (Ministry) on Highway 99, which was successfully completed in Fall 2021. The landslide forms part of a much larger, dormant “soil glacier” called the Tunnel Earthflow and has been continuously active for decades, spanning the highway and upslope railway. The retained portion of Ten Mile Slide is 200 m wide at the highway and is 300 m long with an estimated volume of 1,000,000 m3 of soil material. The stabilization solution included 279 soil anchors installed above the highway, a tied-back tangent pile wall (148 large diameter drilled shafts with 96 tie-back soil anchors) below the highway and reconstruction of the highway grade and drainage.
Rod Kostaschuk, M.Eng., is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with BGC Engineering Inc. based in Kelowna, BC. He has over 35 years experience in geotechnical engineering with project work in foundation engineering, hydrogeology, slope stability and numerical modelling for transportation and resource sector projects including highways and railways, oil and gas, mining, water supply and hydroelectric dams and infrastructure, largely within BC and Alberta. Recent experience includes a focus on slope support and stabilization using structural elements and other earthworks, drainage and ground improvement measures.

This lectureship was established by the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division (now the Geo-Institute) of the Society by the solicitation of gifts from the many friends and admirers of Karl Terzaghi, Hon.M.ASCE. It was instituted by the Board of Direction on October 10, 1960.
At about yearly intervals and upon recommendation of the Geo-Institute Board of Governors, the Executive Director will invite a distinguished engineer to deliver a "Terzaghi Lecture" at an appropriate meeting of the Society.
Karl Terzaghi founded the branch of civil engineering science known as soil mechanics, the study of the properties of soil under stresses and under the action of flowing water.

Episode 6: A New Probabilistic Common-Origin Approach to Liquefaction Susceptibility and Triggering in CPT-Compatible Soils
Kevin Franke, Ph.D., PE, will present a new probabilistic procedure to assess liquefaction susceptibility and triggering for CPT-compatible soils. It eliminates the need for fines content adjustment, identifies a threshold for fine-grained soils not susceptible to liquefaction, and differentiates the liquefaction resistance of clean sands with varying mineralogy and compressibility. However, it may overpredict liquefaction-induced settlements if clean-sand volumetric strain models are inappropriately applied to clayey soils. Practical guidance is provided for handling clayey soils predicted to "liquefy."

Dan Eschenasy is a forensic engineer with over 40 years’ experience in structural engineering. In 2022, he retired from the NYC Buildings Department where he was the Chief Structural Engineer. In this position and as Chief Structural Engineer at the NYC Department of Design and Construction, Mr. Eschenasy was typically the first engineering responder and investigator to almost all major NYC building incidents, such as collapses of buildings, retaining walls, cranes, or other construction installations.
On 9/11 he was tasked to organize the engineering response to the disaster. He also was a member of the ASCE/FEMA task force that investigated the WTC collapse. Published in various technical magazines, the results of his forensic investigations and related statistics became the basis for changes in the structural and construction chapters of the NYC Building Code.
The RA Lecture was established with the ASCE Metropolitan Section Geotechnical Group in 2015 to promote developments and advances in the fields of geotechnical and foundation engineering and to explore technologies developed within our industry to meet the urban geotechnical, foundation, and construction challenges.

The ASCE Geo-Institute (G-I) has established a Lecture in recognition of Professor Carl L. Monismith's contribution to Pavement Engineering. Professor Monismith's teaching and research career in pavement technology, at the University of California, Berkeley, spans more than 50 years. Throughout this period, he has mentored numerous graduate students who have disseminated advances in pavement technology around the world.
The C. L. Monismith Lecture will be awarded annually for outstanding research contributions in Pavement Engineering.
---------------------------
Professor Imad Al-Qadi is the Grainger Distinguished Chair in Engineering, the founding Director of the Illinois Center for Transportation (ICT) at UIUC. A registered professional engineer, Al-Qadi has authored/co-authored more than 800 publications, co-edited 25 conference proceedings, and delivered more than 750 presentations, including numerous keynote and distinguished lectures. He has led more than 150 research projects to completion and manages annually 50-60 projects as ICT director. He led several national technical committees and task forces and served as the President of the ASCE T&DI Board of Governors. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Pavement Engineering and in 2010, he was elected as an ASCE Distinguished Member.
Following the lecture, Prof. Al-Qadi appeared on a panel with Gina Ahlstrom, FHWA; Navneet Garg, FAA; and Enad Mahmoud, TxDOT.

Episode 3: Seismic Stability of PG&E's Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant
Jeff Bachhuber, C.E.G., will discuss the history of seismic studies and ongoing earthquake monitoring under the PG&E Long Term Seismic Program. The Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant generates 9% of California's electric power and 20% of its carbon-free electricity. It is located in a seismically active area with a potential M7.5 earthquake. The seismic design of the plant is among the highest of any nuclear facility in the world and has a substantial safety margin. The plant has undergone multiple seismic studies, including a reassessment after the damages to the Fukushima nuclear power plant after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake.

Andrew J. Whittle is the Edmund K. Turner Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT. His research deals with the development of constitutive models for soil behavior and their application in predicting the performance of foundations and underground construction projects. Dr Whittle was elected to the US National Academy of Engineering in 2010. He was the Geo-Institute Cross-USA lecturer in 2018, and will be ASCE's 60th Terzaghi lecturer in 2024.

The 2022-23 lecturer is Tim Stark of the University of Illinois. His topic in June will be "Highway Embankment Failure on Soft Clay."
Timothy D. Stark is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with an expertise in Geotechnical Engineering. Dr. Stark has been conducting interdisciplinary research and teaching on the static and seismic stability of natural and manmade slopes, such as dams, levees, floodwalls, and waste containment facilities, railroad geotechnics, geosynthetics and geomembranes, soil liquefaction during earthquakes, and stabilization and behavior of dredged material containment areas. He has been involved in a number of projects on these topics, which has facilitated the transfer of his research results to practice. He is currently researching three-dimensional slope stability, inverse analyses of landslides, heating events in waste containment facilities, and jet grouting.
