Robot Koch’s recent album, The Next Billion Years, is as musically as it is philosophically ambitious. Inspired by a mysterious recording, which the German producer serendipitously came across, of the 20th-century French explorer, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the album imagines and gives sounds to a far distant future, “When we think about the future we usually think about our own lifetime or the one of our children, but who really thinks a thousand or a million years into the future? Or even better, a billion years?” asks Robot. It was this big-picture view that inspired Robot’s decision to work with the grandeur of an orchestra, and the famed Estonian conductor Kristjan Järvi, on the album, opening up his electronic meditations to the Baltic Sea Philharmonic’s terrain of acoustic instruments and arrangements for the first time. The Next Billion Years turned out to be not only a highly emotive and existential sound journey but also incredibly poignant to the times we live in. Now, Robot decides to zoom in on his grandiose album project, giving its tracks a stripped-down Foam and Sand rework. Foam and Sand is Koch’s ambient soundscape and visual project, which runs parallel to the composer’s eponymous releases. Inspired by his daily habit of meditation, ideas for the project started to take shape during the lockdown of 2020, growing organically under the radar until Foam and Sand was officially announced in 2021. Using mainly tape recordings, the signature Foam and Sand sound is created with loops that magnify the irregularities and imperfections of the recordings and which are then shaped by the artist into hazy meditative journeys. “One of the sonic hallmarks of Foam and Sand is that I embrace the unsteady beauty of tapes in the sound creation process,” says Koch. In reworking The Next Billion Years through these parameters, Koch not only embraced the imperfections of tape recordings but also allowed outtakes of the original album to find their space in the music. For the Foam and Sand rework version of Glow, for instance, Robot incorporated previously unheard recordings of the Baltic Sea Philharmonic / Nordic Pulse Ensemble improvising. The unpolished instrumentation adds an intimacy that makes Glow all the more luminescent. “The main focus for me is how it feels rather than if it's a perfectly executed idea. With my Robot Koch releases, I go way more into the details and tweak things in the mix a lot more. With Foam and Sand, the beauty is in its rawness”. The Next Billion Years Foam and Sand reworks are a balancing act between ambient, modern classical, and electronic music. It’s not about subduing or removing any of the parts entirely, rather Koch is in search of that sweet spot where the three languages, albeit different, communicate harmoniously. This quest for harmony is mirrored in the composer’s interests outside music - Koch is as much an avid reader of quantum physics as he is dedicated to his daily practice of meditation. He’s particularly drawn to exploring “where science and spirituality meet”, and an open-minded approach can be felt in this music’s lack of conflicts and tensions. Rather than instigating strong emotional responses, the tracks cultivate an observational and introspective mindset, “I’m deeply interested in sound as a healing modality,” says Koch. For the rework of Post String Theory, Koch removes the original’s pulsating electronics and crescendo strings, focusing instead on highlighting subtle melody fragments. The strings are embedded in a warm atmosphere which softens the urgency but keeps the original composition present, peacefully resolving the track, “It’s an exhale. It could underscore the credits of a movie that took an unexpected but beautiful turn in the end,” says Koch. For its Foam and Sand rework, Koch is somewhat reversing the conceptual nature of The Next Billion Years. “It’s a deeper journey into the details of fewer sounds, rather than a bird’s eye view on the whole orchestra as an organism,” he says. Instead of the epic arrangements used previously, these compositions are far more minimal, “more micro than macro”. In focusing on the imperfect subtleties that make-up vast and lush atmospheric soundscapes, Koch wants to open the listener's ears to the infinite frequencies that make up a singular sound. It could be said that rather than looking imaginatively into the future, this music addresses the intimacy of the present.
